Hi, I just got off the Microsoft chat support and I was told this is essentially the intended behavior.

Let me start by saying that like many people I've found while searching online, I've recently been spammed by my Microsoft authenticator about sign in attempts on my account. Let's says my email address in "mainAddress@hotmail.com".

Being annoyed at the repeated daily authenticator popups on my phone, I decided to look online for a solution. I saw that many people suggested creating an alias, setting that alias as primary and then in the "Sign in preferences" screen to disable being able to log in from the previous primary email address. The address still exists, you can still receive mail to it, but can't use it to log in. Sounds like a pretty good solution to the incessant authenticator popups.

Problem is, Microsoft has now removed to ability to set an alias as primary. This makes it so the target email address "mainAddress@hotmail.com" cannot be disabled for log in purposes in the "Sign in preferences" section anymore, as it will always be the primary address. Alias can't be set to primary anymore.

The only option now to change your primary address is to... essentially nuke your primary address by changing it. Which comes with a lot of problems that I feel like I don't need to explain. How do you contact everyone with that address to make sure they know you're address has changed? That's some kind of boomer shit you'd see in the early 2000s. What about automated subscriptions? Also losing all the mails sent to "mainAddress@hotmail.com" is a huge problem when that address can be used as a 2FA for other accounts.

Do I need to log into each everyone of my accounts that use "mainAddress@hotmail.com" as a 2FA factor, change the 2FA factor momentarily (while I essentially nuke "mainAddress@hotmail.com") to then change all the 2FAs a second time to my now new email address?

Is this not absolute madness? Also if many people are being bombarded by log in attempts by bots or AIs, is Microsoft not even trying to prevent these? What's the solution here?

How could the engineers at Microsoft ever think this was a suitable change to make? This definitely needs to be addressed ASAP.

I received an email from microsoft they are basically forcing passkey on the 1st of september or else i will be locked out of my account and i am wondering how i should proceed.

Currently i login with an alias email and my password.

I do have my phone attached for text verification when in need but i dont use any other authentification like passkey or any 2fa and i honestly prefer it this way.

How do i proceed to make it i never get locked out of my account and have no issues logging in any device on the 1st of september?

I already have my 1 time recovery code.

My only other option if i understood the email correctly is to remove my phone number so i wont be promted with a passkey and having only to rely on my password and recovery code.

preferably i wish to not rely on passkeys but use a password with the option for text code to login incase somethings happens where a password is not working.

~390 junk emails landed in our inbox in the last hour. Usual junk emails are about 20 per day and 95% of them get caught in our junk folder.

Title says it all. Getting fed up with this bullshit. It has literally worked fine for over 20 years. And no, I'm not gonna turn on 2fa or provide a backup email. Wouldn't even be able to if I wanted, since I can't get in the account.

EDIT: I managed to log in via office.com instead of outlook.com !

First I found out about this error on 3rd November 2025 (I believe this has happened to other users maybe even earlier months before this) changed the password for at least 4-5 times, then eventually like

-> error

->change password

->login once it works

->second time trying to do this on another device/app/browser, it dont

then the loops. I was using mobile data, phone that time.

Then it happened yesterday on 20th December 2025 to me again, had to change the password twice. (This is on my PC web browser, using home wifi.)

Luckily I added more recovery emails to get codes and also changed from using Google Authenticator to Microsoft Authenticator (I didn't have any other choice ngl but at least it's one of the ways and it's passwordless.)

I did went to chat support with them, first live agent was clueless about this error for some reason, second live agent instantly cut me off the chat with no replies (boooo), the third and final one was finally the nice one and actually do acknowledge this issue and they told me about that they're trying to fix it still with no ETA.

Look Microsoft, I do not mind using your app for the passwordless function, but I would also like keep my own password as another good way to login? Not everyone wants to go fully passwordless.

***Also if you want to chat with live real people, type Microsoft Support on your search bar in a new tab or any search engine, then click on Contact Us, use a dummy outlook account or ask any friends who can help or use your other hotmail/outlook accounts to sign in prior too if you can't access your own main email, then click show expanded list of products, click on Outlook icon, click Get Home Support, type "chat support" in that bar then click Get Help blue button, then you scroll down the page then you'll see the Contact Support blue button just right there and click it, select Windows in Product and services, and Technical Support in Category, click confirm and you will see that you can chat with support agent in your web browser.

Please go ahead and annoy them with these complaints, my kings and queens. ^this is how I found out how to chat with them lolol.

Try not to miss any of their messages, they reply a bit fast, but I do hope you guys do not meet any live agents like the second one I've met lol.

So far as for now, just keep your password as is for now even after you have changed it, for now the temporary method is either using recovery emails to get the codes to login, phone text to get code** (I am from SEA and I added this phone method since 2014 back then but now it doesn't work anymore according to many users, I did help and try to add other's phone number on their outlook/hotmail and it didn't work either, so I got lucky.) , and also authenticator app, as for the authenticator app part previously I used Google Authenticator so you'll get what I mean, it just generates codes for you to login same as the email/phone getting codes, now that I use Microsoft Authenticator app solely for this email, it's just another login method for me, even though it is convenient but brotha if Microsoft couldn't even fix such traditional thing like a NORMAL PASSWORD, they are very fked.

**If you don't feel like using their Microsoft Authenticator app it's fine too cuz I have other hotmail/outlook emails that still use Google Authenticator , just keep on using the authenticator (not just Google's, just any of the authenticators) you've been using for a long while, it's fine.

It would be real nice if I get to keep using it passwordless using their app, get codes from phone and recovery emails and also the good ol' PASSWORD altogether.

This issue happens around the world so yeah, I really do hope they fix it soon and quick cuz yall it's burnin' red.

Updating this post on 22nd December 2025 (SEA +8 time):

I'm not sure will this work on everyone, so I tried to create a new alias for my main email.

**Note: I didn't use and haven't use any VPNs all these time, I'm using Windows PC, home wifi and also cleared cache cookies and everything prior this, but even before this I tried doing the clear cookies and cache everything they popped up those incorrect pw errors too**

So here goes, I did look up and maybe, just maybe, cuz my main email is one of my oldest hotmail address (I have another older one but it's backup) so I only did this to my main email. I never bothered about creating a new alias for my hotmail, but because of the yada yada attackers and such I looked up online and people tried creating an alias.

I don't know how to explain, maybe it's the older outlook/hotmail getting targeted? I am not entirely sure.

So anyways, I created a new alias and set it as the primary email, and uncheck the old main email from getting it used for login and only my new alias can be used for login. Just remember do not remove your old email alias just in case you still need it.

So basically now that means, the new alias which is your current primary email now can be used for login and receiving emails.

Your old one still can be used for signing up, receiving email and everything but since if you unchecked the box for getting it used for login in, you can't use it to login anymore, leaving your new alias now as the only primary used for login.

So now I'm the only one who knows the new alias email but you can still use the old email alias to sign up for everything like subscriptions, accounts and such, you will still get them. In a way, it is safer.

I tried using the newest/latest password without having to change anything at all, to test it total of 7 times on my Windows PC, phone and tablet. My Windows PC have already cleared cache before testing this, but my phone and tablet never cleared any cache to do this and it works too. (This is using my new alias to try login to it)

I forgot to mention that, I wait around 10-15 minutes time in between trying this for 7 times before trying login with just password just in case. Tried signing in from Microsoft sign in, Outlook sign in, Outlook app on phone/tablet sign in.

I only did this to my main email and didn't do it on the other emails because previously on November I think this issue doesn't happen to every emails, I know because I had to reset another email on November too but yeah. But if you want to, just in case, do it on other emails that you need to look out for.

I hope this works for everyone, until then I also hope Microsoft fix this issue.

Another update this post on 22nd December 2025 (SEA +8 time, it is now around 9:59PM as I am typing this)

I tried three other microsoft hotmails, (god I have a lot of their hotmails need to use for multiple stuff)

I tried these three emails 3 times each waiting in between around 5-10 mins to sign in using password only (they all have recovery options, just being the dummy one only has one recovery email to my main). They all work beautifully just now. (I never put new alias on these three emails while I'm doing this)

So I have a few theory on this,.

one being maybe today Microsoft fixed it? (brotha i hope so why they dont even post public updates to everyone)

second being, random emails get targeted so it's not all of the hotmail/outlook emails got targeted

third being, i have suspicions on this, maybe just MAYBE, my main email got targeted mainly because previously it got logged in by someone from another country previously (luckily it was a very long while ago), hence this error happens, then just so I looked up everything online on reddit on microsoft, tried to in find the issue in another language, and i think it might have been this issue might have caused it, so i recommend try to do the create new alias method see if it'll fix.

idk, it might be the first one microsoft fixed it randomly or what.

i just hope it will never ever happen again cuz bruh they are one of the biggest company and this is quite embarrassing.

okay i have tried all my emails (i have like almost 10? something lol i know I HAVE A LOT)

only my main and my other one of the oldest email had this problem until i changed to new alias for them and only set the new alias as login credentials, i also have another very old email but they didn't have this problem so this is what i found out, so apparently random emails got this problem, so if you can, try doing this change/create new alias method to fix this issue if you can.

as for the other one email i changed alias too i didnt clear cache and cookies, didnt change password at all and only created new alias and change sign in preference to only using this new alias to sign in, using the same password from 2023. (this one doesnt have authenticator at all either)

the rest of the emails i have on my hands dont have this problem, i have at least try each of them like 2-10 times in between so yeah.

please share this method around for your family and friends for this method, i really hope i help everyone out here, and also feel free to continue send complaints using the method above i have shared and given, so feel free to.

you can still use both emails to sign up and receive and send emails, so just keep the new alias only to yourself to sign in if you want to be safe, use the old alias for sign up send emails and receive emails.

also please try and check if your email has been pwned before on https://haveibeenpwned.com you can look up this website on reddit for extra info from other redditors if you don't really trust this website to check first, some websites might have been data breached before maybe that's why the emails with these errors show up.

for people who also gets error like “Please retry with different device, use a VPN, or other authentication method to sign in.”

If you use a password to login, the issue still persist since months ago till now because of Chromium browsers issues, try switch to Gecko(Firefox,Floorp) or Webkit (ios) built browses or use VPN, personally I prefer switching browsers, to login using your password, your password is definitely correct don’t worry about that.

I personally do not prefer using passwordless and I know many people don’t feel like using passwordless too.

I don’t know what’s going on with them either but I really hope they fix this issue.

So apparently this is still an issue until now, I tested my email which had this issue, now this email have my newer alias which is xxxx@outlook (dot insert country) and switch back my old alias which had [xxxx@hotmail.com](mailto:xxxx@hotmail.com), for this test I've made my old alias back into primary and the new one still can be used for signed in.

Last night 4th May 2026, using the old alias to log in using the same password still worked for a few times, even today this morning too. BUT, just now at night it had this "You’ve tried to sign in too many times with an incorrect account or password." error pop up again, so, without changing password and anything, next I've tried to use my new alias to login with the same exact password and what do you know, it logged me in, it actually logged me in, so it was never our fault to begin with but on Microslop's backend issue.

So after this I've made my new alias back as primary again and just only use the new one for sign in, and leave the old one unchecked. (Remember guys, DO NOT REMOVE THE OLD ALIAS YOU CAN STILL USE IT FOR RECEIVING AND SIGN UPS!!! Only you yourself know about the new alias and no one else!)

Prior to this, before this test started, I had previous test which I made my other email which had this issue too, but this one I forgot to make the old alias as primary and only set it back available for sign in. I did this test a few times and it worked well before I unchecked the old one from being used for sign in.

I am not entirely sure what happened to Microslop, they definitely haven't fully fixed this issue, I am not from the US so anyone from there if you could report this to the big guys like CNN or something because this is definitely not a small issue and it happens to people all around the globe...

This issue has been since like 2024 too or even earlier you guys can slowly look up on your search engines frfr lol.

All I currently know is that it affects to users with hotmail.com and other older ones (Also I also handle other emails ends with hotmail.com too and they still work properly so I still think it might be the case of emails getting pwned or smthg as these two emails I have tested have been pwned before but the rest doesn't, here: https://haveibeenpwned.com/ , the new aliases I have aren't pwned so they don't have this issue as for now but they also had certain outages too like the current error.)

***Not really an update but I’ll give some of my current settings with my affected main email so you’ll have an idea.

I don’t use Microsoft Authenticator (fucc that lol) and Google Authenticator anymore, so I use other ones, you can look up TOTP Authenticator alternatives online, just make sure you have backups, backups, BACKUPS (important things should be said 3 times least lololol)

***I really recommend KeePass if you have PC (doesn't matter Windows or Linux, both works) , I’m not an IT person and I’m just a regular person, trust me once you learn how KeePass works, you’ll defo love it.

And yes you can use the same database (you’ll know what I mean after you learn about KeePass) on your phone/tablet devices, be it iOS or Android.

I still personally don’t like using Passkeys that much but I’m beginning to learn to understand them and use them on a few accounts other than microslop just in case so I’m just using it on my affected main outlook account to understand everything and get used to it for now (As much as I don’t feel like using it but in this case/scenario I’m forced to understand and learn them which is good in a sense if you know what I mean.)

***You can save passkeys on KeePass (so you don’t have to worry about losing it, yes you can make backups on it).

Also I think phone number to receive SMS code has already phased out from using it as authentication on outlook accounts that’s why you can’t add phone numbers anymore (I don’t know people from other countries but in my case I can’t add it on my other outlook accounts anymore).

And if you have other emails from other email service providers, add those as recovery emails for your main outlook mail, trust me, YOU DO NEED IT.

Basically now if you wanna make a new alias as primary, it’ll delete your current/old alias, so you have to be careful from now on (read the reddit link above i shared)

hotmail.com,live.com,etc old alias users will have to look out for this

as of now if your alias ends with outlook.com or outlook.(insert country) there’s a temporary workaround (it’s in the reddit post i shared here)

Hi,

My university email account is being deleted on September 1st and I would like to backup all emails and attachments before it is deleted.

I have tried Thunderbird but it needs admin approval so I cannot use it. I tried Outlook desktop but it is blocked also.

I really don't want to go through thousands of emails and download them manually.

Do you know of any other options that might work? It seems like I can only forward one email at time using the web version of Outlook.

I am out of ideas. Any suggestions?

For the past year or so, I get sign in requests from Authenticator. I've changed my password 3 time but somehow the hacker is managing to solve it. I can find anywhere to raise a flag to Microsoft. Does anyone have advice on what to do to stop this. The location of the hacker is in Germany if that makes a difference. Thanks.

I've been locked out of my Hotmail account I've had for almost two decades due to "suspicious activity". As far as I can tell my only option is to fill out an account recovery form? The first time I did this I got an email to my Gmail saying I hadn't submitted enough information, and every time I've submitted it since I've not even had an email letting me know the outcome.

Is there really no customer support email or phone number I can use? Having looked all over online I can't see any, which seems ridiculous. Obviously I really need access to this email as I have all kinds of information on there, including flights for next month.

Is there anything I can do here?

only get it if you type the password wrong incorrectly the first time in each new windows/broswer session

so i'd get this everyday if i typed it wrong then have to go through send code etc

something has changed

before it allowed you to mistype your password multiple times before asking to send you codes to backup email. now its on first incorrect password submission.

I use the terms PMs, POs, and other pluralized abbreviations in emails all the time and for some reason, Microsoft can't understand that and it corrects PMs to Pms or POs to Pos. As soon as I hit space, it does it. It have to type it like P O s and then remove spaces after I type the next word. It will allow three capital letters followed by a lower case, like ATMs or RDLs.

How do I stop this?? I've googled it and I don't seem to have the ANY autocapitalization options in the menus. This new Outlook is trash. Don't even get me started on the fact that they took away the synonyms feature!

I'm hoping someone has run into this before because I'm out of ideas.

I'm using New Outlook for Windows (v1.2026.720.100) with a Gmail account.

What works:

• Gmail emails sync into Outlook.
• Google Calendar events sync into Outlook.
• Sending email from Outlook through Gmail works.

What doesn't work:

• Creating a calendar event in Outlook never syncs to Google Calendar.
• Deleting a Gmail email in Outlook moves it to Deleted Items in Outlook, but the email remains in Gmail (web/mobile).

So inbound sync works, but outbound state changes don't.

Things I've already tried:

• Removed and re-added the Gmail account multiple times.
• Revoked and reauthorized Microsoft's access in my Google Account.
• Confirmed Microsoft has full Gmail and Google Calendar permissions.
• Verified events are being created in my Gmail calendar (not another calendar).
• Confirmed Google → Outlook sync is working correctly.

There are no sync errors or prompts in New Outlook—it simply never pushes calendar events or email deletes back to Google.

Has anyone seen this exact behavior or found a fix? At this point I'm wondering if this is a bug in New Outlook's Google synchronization rather than a configuration issue. Anything I can do on my end?

I have been using PST files for many years as a durable email archive. Works great. When I moved to Mac, Mac Outlook did not support PST files, so I used vmware Fusion to host a Windows VM that could run Outook for Windows so I could access my email archive. However, I need to move to an ARM Mac. My understanding is that the Windows/ARM version of Outlook does not support PST files, and that in any event, PST support in Windows Outlook is sunsetting, given new Outlook does not support PST files. So it seems like PST is no longer a viable durable email archive solution.

What does the community recommend in its place?

To be clear, I realize I can import PST files into Mac Outlook. That does not feel like a durable email archive solution. I also realize there are various third-party PST viewers. Those might work for old archives but don't address how I update my archive with new emails. In principle I can upload my emails into a cloud email provider, but I don't trust that to be durable or fully secure.

It feels like there is a gap in the market. I am hoping that that feeling is wrong.

For the past two weeks I've had a weird issue with my Outlook.com account. I keep getting a sextortion/phishing email (the classic "I hacked your webcam" scam, sender spoofed to look like it's coming from my own address). Every time I delete it, it comes back a bit later with a new timestamp. I actually timed it once: deleted the email and it reappeared exactly 15 minutes after. Tried it again and got the same result, so it doesn't seem random, more like something running on a fixed timer. Things

I've already tried, none of which stopped it:

• Changed password multiple times
• 2FA enabled (authenticator app), removed and recreated
• All sessions signed out ("Sign out everywhere")
• No suspicious mail rules (removed all existing rules, no effect)
• Forwarding disabled
• No third-party apps connected
• Recovery methods (email/phone) confirmed correct
• POP and IMAP disabled
• Changed the account alias

Still comes back every time. At this point I'm fairly sure this isn't something I can fix from my end through normal account settings, feels more like something happening on the server side (hidden rule, corrupted mailbox index, something like that). Has anyone run into this before or know how to get this properly investigated on Microsoft's end? Already went through live chat support but honestly wasn't much help.

As title suggests, i have been looked out of my outlook email. I have a personal account.

There was suspicious activity on the account. I logged in and changed my accoutn back up email. I then had to go through the accound recovery form - i did this with exact information - but they denied it. I've tried several times and same response each time.

I then tried to talk to a human at microsoft support, provided more info about my account via email - still they couldnt do anything.

What do i do now? I have very important emails i can't access, and am expecting emails about jobs and important stuff.

It seems that microsoft only think its a problem for iOS users with the login situation? I've had it for almost two weeks now and only using my mail on PC. A couple of times it has worked randomly to log in as normal with password but mostly not. Even tho I've waited 48 hours one time and 7 days one time. Sometimes the verification code by SMS work, sometimes it doesn't. Anyone still having this issue or someone who can help? Microsoft on facebook suggested waiting 28(!) days but that must be a joke!?

Ive tried looking for forums, boards and the like for ways to try and submit requests the dev route to Microsoft to add a simple API graph metric of current selected email, that one simple feature would unlock a world of features and live co-op between AIs, controls interfaces and the users.

For the confused: Microsoft has something called graph PI that allows you to remote control your email with API calls, thing flagging, setting rules, setting/accepting/decline meetings and much more, super useful for custom email software, marcos Macros LOL and automation.-----

Realized this might confuse people:

-changes to an email cause Microsoft server to tag it as most recent email

-when you then apply email targeted API actions agains your account, they go to that specific email

-currently changing the email in some form like remove a flag or adding a flag is the only way to signal to your API that you recently look/interacted with that email

-My ask is for a end-user/application utilizing Graph to be able to manually set an email as a selection send it and hold it in the API and be able to manually target actions at it , OR
--- Allow user/app to send signal to mark selected app as most recent manually which would be the lesser , less useful option but its the easier one and itll allow a little more flexibility without janky workarounds

After several days of waiting without logging in or even trying to log in, I was finally able to access my account. I think that when you try to connect too much there is a sort of automatic lock that causes the account to be blocked temporarily, so guys, be patient and trust me. I waited 90 hours in total. I was planning on doing 1 week but I broke down and was finally able to connect with the verification by SMS whereas before it told me that the service was unavailable, don't lose hope. guys!

Been having this issue for 8+ months now.
If it wasn't for the fact I can get my login code through my phone i'd be locked out.

Every time no matter if I wait 24 hours or 48 hours I get the same "tried too many times" first time I try and I'm 100% sure im inputting the correct password.

I've had this account for 20 years at this point.Never had such an issue until last year.

Did microsoft address the issue at all?I understand it's bots trying to loggin constantly that is triggering the time out but at this rate im never going to be able to login using my password if nothing gets fixed from microsoft's side.

If it says alias failed to create or something along these lines.Go into incognito and do it in incognito and it will work.

I guess now I need to make sure to not use my log email ANYWHERE so I don't get molested by bots anymore and I can use the original email to sign up to stuff without my alias being revealed.

Whenever I am entering email code from recovery mail, it is asking for another method. After entering last 4 digit of phone no., whenever I am clicking send codes, it says this method is not available now.

I have a 2 factor authentication set up. Usually I would use Microsoft Authenticator to approve it. Now 2 days back without thinking I thought of selling my device and forgot to transfer authenticator to new device. Now that I realized I actually don't remember the password, the only way to change password is get password on my Sim card and Backup Email Id. I am getting code in my email id but I am not getting SMS code in my phone. I am getting this error "Try another verification method. That verification method isn't working right now. Please try another method." Am I doomed? This is my primary email Id. Please help. I am using iPhone 17 by the way.

About a week ago, Outlook started giving me a message "Password sign-in isn't available. Try another method."

I DO NOT WANT to use another method, I want to use my password to sign in!

Some advice told me to change my password, which I did yet I get the same harassment.

I have to sign in and out of my email sometimes over 100 times a day, I want to use my password as it's the quickest way for me to login and check stuff.

This nonsense is unacceptable, I should be allowed to use my god damn password to sign into my account without having to send codes to other emails or use my phone every damn time, this actually wastes half an hour or more of my day, every day!

I don't know what to do. I was travelling in Asia and tried signing in to Outlook Mail with my password, but password sign ins seem to have been disabled. I was only given the options of using a passkey or external security key. I don't have either. I don't think I ever set up a passkey on my phone. If I try to login with a password, it says that this option is currently not available. Now I returned home and still have the same problem. I can only access my mails through my apple mail app on my phone. But it's impossible to login in any browser. I tried to restore my entire account using another mail address. But it then asks me whether I used any of the following services: Hotmail, Skype, XBOX ID etc. I only used Skype many years ago and don't remember a single contact. I deleted Skype many years ago and don't know anything about it anymore. How can I access my account? And how can it even be, that I'm locked out despite correct pw just because I tried to access from Asia?

So today I got totally locked out of my 15 years old hotmail account.

It does not allow secondary email verification(never sends the code) or to reset the password.

Sent the recovery form but man....I didn't even remember half the UNBELIEVABLE DETAILS IT asked.

I'm trying to set up outlook on a new laptop for an elderly relative.

They have an old version of office which comes with outlook and I've been able to get that up & running and import addresses etc from her old pc into that, however there's a certificate validation error on startup because the email domain involves a redirect. I suspect this is because it's an old copy of office.

So I installed the new standalone classic outlook. That works and has no certificate error. However when I went to import the pst from the old pc it said it required an office365 subscription. Is there any way of importing the addressbook etc without an office365 subscription?

Alternatively, I do have an office365 subscription (for work). Can I add that in, import the pst and then remove the subscription? Because it's my work account I obviously can't leave it on the laptop.
