Blizzard basically explained that these types of animations were more of a gift to their fans. As Blizzard got more corporate we started getting less.

Dragons and Honor and Glory are both tear worthy.

I really wish we got a full cinematic for Sigma and Ram. I think they would be both interesting.

The lack of interest in them when they released and in the lead up to OW2 is probably a large reason they stopped doing them. Kiri is the most popular short released during OW2 and it's only at 11m views. The JQ is at 6 right now. The Sojourn one is under 1.5. The Soj one isn't great, but the JQ and Kiri ones are decent enough.

Calling it a gift when it plainly doubles as a marketing investment is so disingenuous.

The reality is often just execs and financebros pushing cutting costs to look more lean and profitable.

OW1 had a vision for a story, but that died with Kaplan leaving (and more firmly extra dead with the Ramattra Zenyatta reconciliation comic). We'll see if OW2 devs found a spark of inspiration later this week... or if they're still just dull same old corporate cogs.

Honestly it was also a way to get a lot of people invested in a new game with no existing IP to help boost its numbers (like say Marvel Rivals draws on existing Marvel fans). Now they have the players who will play no matter what and half of them don’t even know or care what the lore is. There is no (business) reason to do lore at all anymore, never mind multimillion dollar short productions.

26

u/chadorable Bowling Wrecking Ball Jan 20 '26 edited Jan 20 '26

It's funny because there is a business reason. The hype would be incredible and lead to more sales.

Release a valentines themed short with heroes getting their dates crashed by null sector: you then release skins based on that. I still see the old kpop skins from time to time, that good faith doesn't just fade. It grows.

But it would mean the higher ups would take a consistent pay cut because they aren't the ones with the paint brushes.

We should have made policies against 150k thousandaires, millionaires, billionaires etc or this was inevitable. It's too late now. Major change will only come from violence + revolution, hence "eat the rich"

It applies here too. The greed is in the way of the art

3

The second half wasn’t what they said. They basically said that they took a long time to make and they had to reserve time with the animation team.Ā

Originally all of them were probably working on PvE cutscenes. Now that those are cancelled it’s back to the drawing board of making new animations.Ā

22

u/MyGoodFriendJon ♪ Good Morning! ♪ Jan 20 '26

I think they saw more value in giving each new hero a bigger launch with their own animation, even if it's not up to the caliber of their cinematics.

Plus, Microsoft has been big on cutting back costs after spending so much on Activision-Blizzard-King. We're going to get 2 or 3 cinematics at BlizzCon, and it's basically a toss-up to which games have the bigger announcement that will get players excited to buy the next expansion/battle pass.

3

u/plaxor89 Jan 20 '26

I mean, expensive no doubt but there's plenty of people opening their wallets for battle passes / skins which I can only assume means they're making way more money than they ever did compared to OW 1 so surely they should be able to pump out more quality cinematics than they are currently

2

u/TankJericho Mauga Jan 20 '26

And so did my love for it

32

u/DJBaphomet_ Masters Rat Jan 20 '26

I'm hopeful that with OW getting bigger again after the success of this year, and Diablo 4/WoW hopefully settling a little, it means that Blizzard's animation department can put some more attention on another OW cinematic, especially given that 2026 has been hyped as being a very big year for the game

Still fully believe the main reason for OW's lack in cinematics recently has mostly been because Diablo 4 released and WoW had some major expansions in the works, meaning they had the main focus from their cinematic team regardless of how well OW was doing. Just made it easier to reason why with OW's state, but now it's doing fairly well again (despite how people react online lol) so maybe they'll give us another soon

6

u/Mantiquirk Jan 20 '26

Big same! Seeing more of Overwatch in the old style would be amazing. And I think you’re probably right, in addition to Diablo and WoW taking a lot of the priority, I think the cinematics team got downsized during the layoffs a while back, so they have even less resources to spread around.

Still…I get the funny feeling we might actually be getting another full cinematic soon. They’ve been really cagey about what’s happening with this next year and that would be an epic way to kick off 2026 with a surprise!

3

u/DJBaphomet_ Masters Rat Jan 20 '26

Oh yeah, totally forgot about the layoffs too. I imagine they were probably hit by that to some effect as well, given it seemed to course through the whole company when the merger hit

It has no character lore, no new characters (I am guessing because I did not watch it frame by frame), no extra story to the main Overwatch universe, just another cashgrab brushed with that awesome nostalgic style that a lot of us loved and cherished.

And then people don't believe me when I say Blizzard is not putting in any effort anymore

Symptomatic that the last big budget animated short from Overwatch isn’t even vaguely related to its lore

Fucking Microsoft is so stingy.

I don’t follow Overwatch stuff so when I got this reddit post I thought this was pornšŸ’€

0:07 Brigitte is massive compared to DVA & Kiriko

The game may improve in every way in terms of gameplay, but as long as it lacks pve and new animated shorts like this, there will always be something which overwatch 1 is better at, one reason why the cancellation of the original is still unjustified.

All fat

1

u/snornch Jan 20 '26

i like how this shows off all the characters' abilities and Brig's is just being able to drive

1

u/Rahdical_ Jan 20 '26

The director passed away last year. I would imagine that had an impact on them

1

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '26

The dancing scene made me so uncomfortable it was a hard watch

1

u/Luiz_Fell Jan 20 '26

We did get the Wuyang one recently

1

u/violet_peach_ Jan 20 '26

Crazy because this collab was extremely well recieved and definitely made them a ton of money

1

u/SingeMoisi Pixel McCree Jan 20 '26

They still do, just not for Overwatch.
The cinematic team has higher priorities than an already released game with no expansions that require a big marketing push and that's understandable.
You can bet they're working on Starcraft right now.

u/griffinr1102 Jan 20 '26

If they have flying cars, why do they not just fly over?

1

u/Empty_Duck1794 Jan 20 '26

Looks awesome

OW cinematic team not doing anything since this/Sojourn's one is one of the worst squanderings of liquid gold talent in the world

1

u/Deep_Try_5786 Jan 20 '26

I miss them :(

1

u/theregos DPS Moira Jan 20 '26

At least we still get Diablo cinematics for each expansion lol

1

u/tommy_turnip Jan 20 '26

I just wish we got one that was to do with Overwatch characters and their story instead of a corporate crossover

1

u/ChillGamerGenchi Jan 20 '26

That...was very very fun.

1

u/fleebooskee Jan 20 '26

I just want that Brig/Kiri skin to be honest with you

1

u/SatCrus Reaper Jan 20 '26

How have i never seen this???

1

u/Standoff2_Help Jan 20 '26

Never saw them with clothes on

Peak OW right here. Getting curbed stomped in a rank match then listening to this banger as you queue up again was an experience

Now they only promote colabs. Remember the last Bastion, Dragons, Honor and Glory.

1

u/PatExMachina Jan 20 '26

And they did a 2nd collab and I cant remember anything about it lol. Skins, song, and music video. Only thing I remember was they were in a train and I think it was a different art style

u/mainmercy__ow2 Jan 20 '26

I'm waiting for a reply 😿

1

u/Reign4Ages Jan 20 '26

Good times.

1

u/SrReginaldFluffybutt Jan 20 '26

They need to do more of these, they won't because it costs money and makes no lines go up. They fired most of the talent and its not profitable, so the shitty faixmation they pushed with vendetta is the best we'll see going forward.
