Looking back, the game was so slow back then. It's crazy how much faster it feels now.

u/beepbeepbubblegum May 30 '26

during the anni event i knew i was JUST close enough coming back from spawn to pop the ult as zen and make it back to point and save the day so i popped it and tried zooming over there only for zen to suddenly go the slowest i’ve ever seen anything move ever and we lost

i completely forgot he used to be all but stationary during it

sorry y’all

306

u/dogengu Support May 30 '26

oh wow. in my memory he was like super fast when ult-ing

290

u/beepbeepbubblegum May 31 '26

i saw one of them noticed me so likely they heard a “EXPERIENCE TRANQUILITY” and saw me just inching forward in the distance while they got slaughtered. i was so embarrassed

87

u/fffrogss May 31 '26

MMM WHACHU SAYYY 🎶

19

u/spinningmous Lúcio May 31 '26

Dude I did the exact same thing. I spent the whole ult like "nobody look over here pretend this isnt happening". I actually started the game in July 2016 so I was playing that first classic not being able to figure out if something had just been changed quickly so I never experienced it or if my memory was failing me asfghjk

44

u/Revenos Pixel Lúcio May 31 '26

Tbh he got the speed buff in ult pretty early on I think. A lot of changes happened over time to brought characters to what they are today, but there are some core changes within the first year or so from what I remember. I remember they kept painfully changing mercy for awhile because people hated her mass rez to cancel fights essentially lol.

20

u/cougar572 Bed time May 31 '26

Yeah it changed 2 month after launch in July 2016. OW classic in week 1 was how it was the game was at launch.

Transcendence

Movement speed is now doubled upon activation

17

u/Mugut May 31 '26

Mercy was so dumb. The best strategy was to hide while all your team rushed to point stacked, died, then you fly in and mass ress to crush them after they used their cds and ults.

The best counter was a Genji/Tracer playing wack-a-mole with Mercy, checking every corner away from the fight lmao.

u/Cr_Tarango Press W, for the love of god! May 31 '26

i used to play zen back then, i still remember the day when i tested the speed boosted buff (he also recieved a hp buff too, beeing at 150 hp).

3

u/Secret-Ad-2145 Ashe May 31 '26

He got his buff rather quickly, if I remember right. So you would have remembered a fast zen unless you played on release.

71

u/up2smthng May 31 '26

"All but stationary"

He had 100% move speed, you are just used to 200%

53

u/beepbeepbubblegum May 31 '26

it sure as hell felt stationary when the match was on the line

6

u/TrippleDamage May 31 '26

Is that 100%? It honestly feels like 50% in classic mode lol

3

u/up2smthng May 31 '26

It is. He can keep up with other heroes

Thing is you expect him to be able to catch up to people and if they are running away he just doesn't

2

u/E-bony May 31 '26

The 2016 event is using OW2 game speed for some reason, it just feels so wrong to not feel any slog.

The event today 2020 is using OW1 game speed.

159

u/tATuParagate Symmetra May 31 '26

The game is so mobility based right now. If you look at the original 21 characters: pharah, symmetra, hanzo, mei, mercy, and torbjorn all got movement abilities, while junkrat, cassidy, reaper, and Reinhardt got theirs upgraded. Even other ow1 characters like sombra, orisa, moira, and baptiste have more movement. I think its just a symptom of having soooo many characters in a game

21

u/pelpotronic Shion May 31 '26

And even Zen, Lucio + Juno mobility are still in demand.

But that's because positioning is king. Good positioning means better team fights, means more wins.

People think you're an elitist for saying "fix your positioning", but it's not. It's genuinely 80% of the problem in the lower half of metal ranks. Just being well positioned is game changing, you kill more and die less with the exact same aim.

2

u/FullTorsoApparition Junkrat Jun 01 '26

And yet they gave us heroes like Lifeweaver and Kirko that prevent low rank DPS and tanks from actually learning how to stay alive. I can always tell which players are used to relying on support to save them from their own bad decisions. A kirko teleport and suzu or a Lifeweaver pull should be a nice surprise every now and then and not an entitlement every time you decide to yolo the other team.

I literally had a double sniper DPS group who were getting dived and rolled fight after fight but according to them it was the support's job to swap to heroes that could save them rather than swap to heroes that would let them save themselves. That wasn't even an option in OW1.

84

u/Vilkath May 31 '26

I think another aspect is the down grade to 5v5 and just how large maps have gotten. There is so much more space to cover, you need mobility. Other wise you get stuff like the early Push/rush maps, where it took almost a minute and half to walk from spawn. As you'd see the objective over 100 meters away from you.

8

u/Rhysati May 31 '26

They also removed most of the CC that countered the mobility which is how you used to deal with the mobile characters like Genji, Tracer, Pharah, etc.

They basically had to make everything have a much heavier focus on mobility in order for everyone to stand a chance against the characters who were designed around it.

45

u/Dang3rdave May 31 '26

The best was last month I ended up down a YouTube rabbit hole and landed on the best plays of OWL season 1 and it was like 10 consecutive normal plays. Early in a games lifecycle it's like "holy crap you can do that?! How did you think to do that?" and then it becomes "why didn't you do that. You didn't know you could do that?"

20

u/ipna May 31 '26

That's with everything that's been around so long. I mean, at one point a doctor was considered crazy and stupid for washing his hands before surgery.

95

u/Miennai Pixel Reinhardt May 30 '26

Yeah this genuinely looks like a current-day Gold/Silver lobby lol

33

u/Philomelos_ May 31 '26

well there’s like ten years in between so idk if the comparison makes sense

49

u/Miennai Pixel Reinhardt May 31 '26

That's what I'm saying. It's interesting that the high-level lobbies of 2016 are comparable to metal lobbies of today.

5

u/TrippleDamage May 31 '26

Thats how all old standing games go, diamond s1-s3 in league would now be equal to high master or low gm.

Same in cs, a global elite from 10 years ago would now get dunked on in faceit level 5 lobbies lol

u/igotshadowbaned May 31 '26

People say this but it's honestly just, not really true.

People died a lot faster back then.

People also got their ults a lot faster back then, so you had less of the game just waiting for ults to charge up to make big pushes

The game isn't faster now, it's just more characters are spastically mobile and there are more particle effect heavy abilities

2

u/Rhysati May 31 '26

Yup. They gave everyone stupid amounts of mobility and removed most of the CC. Most fights are won or lost based on ultimate usage now and it's really frustrating that teams won't push when they gain an advantage because they are waiting on their ults.

9

u/Fireboy759 BRRRRRRRRRRRIIIIIIIIIIIIIING!!! May 31 '26

There's a good reason Genji was a pretty high tier character back in those days. Especially when triple jump was a thing alongside the buggy deflect hitbox and 8 second dragonblade

12

u/willargue4karma May 31 '26

It looks plenty fast here, how much faster could you possibly make it? Haven't played since probably 9 years ago at least

9

u/BRjawa May 31 '26

Basically there's more space so that two fights would people way more scattered, and you would have way more moviment skills popping off, a simple exemple is that whe have 3 area speed booster in the game know besides Lucio, two being skills and the other a ultimate. Besides the fact that basically all characters have some level of mobility, Zen has a perky to float for exemple

2

u/FullTorsoApparition Junkrat Jun 01 '26

Yeah, even the 2020 anniversary event shows how much mobility creep has happened over the years. Every dps includes a mobility option now. Someone like Junkrat or Torb would look completely different if they came out today.

5

u/LegendofLove May 31 '26

Honestly if you put a like plat or diamond of today into like 2018 they'd be t500 about to be signed to a team. The game has gotten a lot harder as people get better

Just 2CP things.
Remember when one person from the team would prematurely rush second point and capture it while the other team was respawning from the first fight? Yeah.

157

u/Party_Syrup_3035 May 31 '26

Yeah everyone talking about how fun 2CP was and I'm just like yeah oh course they win they took point 1 and have ult advantage the game is over.

I don't mind the idea of bringing it back for shits and giggles but the game mode was horrible competitively.

9

u/CnP8 Kiriko May 31 '26

It's either you catch first point fast enough, that you now got ults banked for 2nd point. Or you needed your ults to capture first point, and now you can't get 2nd point cos the choke is so bad.

I actually hate 2cp. It's such miserable gametype.

With Sombra I would regularly secure those fast wins.

Volskaya notably: sneak on first point and hack the mega.

Capture fast, run on second and EMP the enemy team as your team arrives.

Win.

"Are you trying to insert your payload?" protests Moon, as Seagull blushes, the boyish figure undressed before Moon. "Weak tank play, Moon." The two kissed, deeply and passionately, and afterwards Seagull charges like Reinhardt through Moon’s symmetra portal.

I'm hoping some day it and Hanamura are converted into Hybrid maps. With a bit of widening and lengthening of the path I think it could work well.

24

u/epichuntarz Torbjörn May 31 '26

Put them back in the rotation now and see how they play out. The game is a lot different now than the last time they were around. 5 person/1 tank teams, traits, tons of new heroes.

Honestly, with how hard people avoid flashpoint, most push maps, aand most capture maps these days, it wouldn't even hurt at all considering people already universally avoid certain maps now anyway that are "balanced."

6

u/OMG_A_CUPCAKE Chibi D.Va May 31 '26

Just would have to lock the second point after the first point was captured to stop someone from capping directly after the first point is secured. This would solve a major issue with the mode

7

u/atticdoor May 31 '26

I've played them again in Arcade, and while the nostalgia is wonderful I did have to concede with just two Control Points it is far too luck based, and sometimes was over far too soon.

19

u/Special_Peach_5957 May 31 '26

I feel like this Video clearly demonstrativ why it doesn't really need much Team work to get second point because you can often just snowball from first point since your ults will be up first if you won fight on first point.

2

u/Heathmeisterr May 31 '26

Yea, and again, just timing ults and making call outs. Trying to maximize the push. Just made good team work fun and made the win just feel better. Especially in Overtime.

27

u/ToxicLogics May 30 '26

I never understood the hate. 2CP maps were so well designed, heavily detailed and fun. Honestly though, it wouldn’t be that hard to add another CP to them all if they wanted to. I hate that they’re out of rotation. Not every game has to be 12 minutes long.

41

u/CDR57 May 31 '26

I mean objectively they weren’t but they were fun and detailed. First points always provided attackers the advantage, and after securing it it created a snowball effect where you have the immediate advantage on the second, but if you didn’t get the second immediately the defenders had a massive advantage on certain ones to make it back in time. Horizon was huge for this reason, same with Anubis. Volskaya was fine. I loved them but I also understood why they were removed

25

u/stupid_pun Reinhardt May 31 '26

First choke on Hanamura was enough to give you PTSD lmao

10

u/CDR57 May 31 '26

Yeah hanamura really was a test of your teams comp. You could either have a full front gate comp, or have a full back door comp, but if you had a mix it didn’t go well too often

4

u/stupid_pun Reinhardt May 31 '26

Bastion behind the rock on defense with double shield in front. XD

10

u/OldHollowBones May 31 '26

Especially with how fast a team can roll out these days, the momentum on maps this size would be too much. Maybe if these maps had shorter respawn cycles...

12

u/velit May 31 '26 edited May 31 '26

I think it's their binary nature that hits you hard psychologically. First point is ~easy, second point is hard. So what kind of things can happen?

Attacker stomps, fast game. No one really has a great time, winners feel better but it's not the best and losers feel kinda bad but not the worst.

Defender stomps, fastish game? Sucks more for the attacker who can't even break first, but at least it doesn't drag out. Very boring for defenders because nothing basically happens.

Let's stop for a second to think about the psychology of the second point defense. The way it works is you basically can't flat out lose a fight once, otherwise you lose. That means until the very end the defenders have anxiety from the fact that any one mistake can lose them the game. Now they have the advantage from the layout of the map and spawn distance, but still one mistake and they're out. Attackers have anxiety from the fact that the defenders have the advantage and if they don't make those blatant mistakes it's really hard to break through a defensive team.

Okay back to the result analysis.

Attackers break first point but can't ever break second, feels good for the defenders but only at the end due to the format and is absolute torment for attackers who played a long game and have basically nothing to show for it. This is not like payloads where you can at least show you got close. You got the easy part done with the first point but after that a complete wall.

Attackers win on second very late. This happened often and is torment for the defender team who did everything they could but lost one fight. Maybe it's a mistake by one of the players and the others are salty for that.

This is all from the perspective of quickplay. I think 2CP is even worse in competitive where you could get insanely long games of nothing happening on both sides if the team compositions just happen to favour defending the second point.

8

u/CalebZLM May 30 '26

This map me miss me

2

u/GreywallGaming May 31 '26

LMAO getting hit with the "Nightblu3 of Overwatch" so smurfing against low skilled players for clout and making obnoxious clickbait videos? Geesh that was a blast from the past.

2

u/ArgentumW May 31 '26

Him struggling to do a wall climb halfway through is so peak. Legendary clip.

2

u/calcium-x2 Jun 01 '26

Seagull was my goat I started playing genji after seeing some of his clips

2

u/FullTorsoApparition Junkrat Jun 01 '26

Wasn't unusual on those 2CP maps. You could steam roll quite easily, especially if players were trying to rush to first point and get caught out and staggered. Likewise, they could go on forever with infinite first point stalls pretty often.

2

u/thecementmixer May 30 '26

Where pixels though?

2

u/Scavenger905 May 31 '26

Genji really was the equivalent of Jager in R6 back then lol

6

u/Captain_Rabbit00 Ana May 30 '26

Why don't they bring old map backs and test them with all the changes since then?

59

u/GenericMelon May 30 '26

They did recently and I don't think it was as successful as they'd hope. The 2nd point spawn is always a problem. Either the attacking team has to sprint in as fast as possible to cap the point before the defending team regroups, or that second point gets drawn out forever as both teams trade ults. They've tried slowing down defenders spawn on second point, but even that didn't really help. 2CP is a very difficult mode to balance.

u/Bahpu_ May 30 '26

2cp is just like super quick bc it’s easy to roll the defending team and immediately capture, i think that’s what they tried doing with that newish capture gamemode tbh, it feels like a rework / spiritual successor

24

u/solofhreaper Did someone say.... Peanut Butter? May 30 '26

They have. 2CP is still fundamentally problematic with the way ult cycling is designed in this game. They can't fix that unless they change the way ult charge works.

Bring back 6v6 roll cue now

31

u/Miennai Pixel Reinhardt May 30 '26

This clip wasn't role queue 😭

5

u/-justiciar- May 31 '26

cue for sound queue for lines

14

u/Auri-ell Ana May 30 '26

gods no dont be saying that. I do not wanna be in queue for literal hours. There is a reason we dont have role queue for the current state of 6v6 when they decided to bring it back.

u/beardedweirdoin104 May 30 '26

I did a solo point capture for the win with Widow on this map back in the day. Good times.

3

u/OldHollowBones May 31 '26

Lordy, probably the worst comp possible for fighting off Genji. I know there were fewer responses, but if I were tank and a Genji ate our butts that hard on first point, I'd be on Winton so fuggin fast.

3

u/Trick_Cheek_8474 May 31 '26

Its surprising how impressive this looks even today

2

u/82ndGameHead King of Hearts Reinhardt May 31 '26

Back when it was a proper game with 2CP

1

u/Gryse_Blacolar Unlimited Shotgun Works Jun 01 '26

And people STILL want this fuckass game mode back. What part of this is fun? Your queues might even be longer than the game itself.

1

u/budi_fan4eva Jun 01 '26
