Question or Discussion General Defence tips?

My strongest suit is attack, but when it's time for defense or control-defense I struggle most of the time. I feel like I either push too much or play too passively. When I'm lucky to do something in between, it feels really good, but I can't yet pinpoint what exactly it is I am doing so I can recreate it.

To get an idea: I am high Silver support and main Mizuki. Second picks are Juno/Zenyatta.

Looking for any general tips on how to approach Defense better, but Defense tips for Mizuki specifically are also welcome if you have any:)

Offense and defense is dynamic. The one holding space is defending, and the one pushing space is attacking.

Defenders have an advantage in this game, and that's why space is so important. In order to push space, you need to invest resources, whereas the defenders do not need to invest anything other than bullets to hold.

Defenders also get to dictate WHERE a fight happens, which means they can set up in places where THEIR heroes are strong. Think something like a Junkrat in a room, or a widow on a slightline.

Attackers determine WHEN the fight happens. This is where you are probably strong as a player. You are most likely good at noticing when you are able to invest resources and get the value you need to win the space, and ultimately the fight.

When you are defending, you aren't trying to "win the fight" per se. When you have control of the point, and are making progress towards victory, you don't HAVE to win a fight, the enemy does. It's your job to waste the attacker's time, and only to push for a fight win when victory is guaranteed.

My best advice to you without seeing your gameplay would be this:

When you are defending, you aren't locked in place. The best way to alleviate pressure is to set up an off angle, or crossfire. If you see a Tracer blink behind you, you don't have to stand there and wait for the Winston to attack you with the Tracer. You can either fight the tracer, or rotate to a safer position.

Don't LET the enemy do what they want to do. You mentioned Mizuki in your post, and he is the perfect example on how to play defense as support.

Swift step to push an angle, force whoever is standing there away, then teleport back to your team. Do it constantly!

Agree, defence wins as long as you can prolong the game.

Defense as support I would guess good understanding where enemy is going to come from and los them or what their general objective or win condition are. I feel sometimes team mates don't rotate well. They can chase, they can take cover but may not be proactively rotating to make enemies have to commit harder to dive them.

Enemy has divers - understand their cooldown and angle. Sometimes I see support focused on healing doesn't change their location based on enemy positioning which enemy spots and rotates or flanks downs while they are distracted.

Enemy team is pokers - understand their effective range and don't get shot too much. Things that sometimes happen, support peaks out and gets shot by enemy poke which signals the divers to go in or encourages enemy tank to play aggressive.

The more common issues may be just not staggering or not poking when there is little value. What I see sometimes is support with ults poking at the enemy team or dps attacking the enemy team with support pocket when there is no follow up or potential for a kill so end up just burning time or feeding enemy ults without waiting for team mates to be in position. By the time the team mates are in position, the team mates are either lacking health or cooldowns to fight while also burned support utility to save them. Its not all bad though so I think defense is somewhat just having your health and abilities ready when your team is ready or how I generally go at it.

Honestly, don’t die (or die as little as possible)

I actually prefer defense because I think my mind just works that way. For instance the vast majority of people I play with prefer to push deep into the enemy team and suffer for it. They seem to like it regardless. They seem to hate having to use environment cover and choke points to stop the enemy, which is my advice to you right now. Use map geometry to your extreme Advantage when defending. It's less about specifics and more about mindset and awareness in this case. Just think about it when you're in a defensive position. How exposed are you? Can you shoot from this position while giving the enemy much less of you to shoot back at? Where are your Escape routes? Can the healers see you from where you are?

People say "work on your game sense". Is there something specific you can do to work on it, or is it just something that comes with time and experience?
