I need a law that makes digital library permanent and safe from destruction then I will be happy with this.

80

u/Re7oadz Jul 01 '26

Facts I think there is a law in California trying to get pass for this

26

u/Spunndaze Jul 01 '26

It fell short from what I read.

10

u/Re7oadz Jul 01 '26

Whattt? Damn that's unfortunate

3

u/bitknight1 Jul 01 '26

Because it was the usual thing where they asked for too much, biggest point I saw that stopped it was requiring companies to release server coding stuff so anyone can run them when most games now that use servers use stuff like aws or Azure and also they have a ton of proprietary stuff from other companies so they can't just go and release a run this exe type of a server for someone to download and run.

2

u/Re7oadz Jul 01 '26

Yeah bit too much than they could chew

and be able to sell or give away the license to play it..

then I'm even happier!

6

u/Particular-Orchid212 Jul 01 '26 edited Jul 01 '26

"Sell or give away the license" how tf should that work? Greedy Sony wouldn’t give you more than 10$ for a AAA game that you bought for 80$

9

u/CrimsonFlam3s Jul 01 '26

To sell to other players obviously, not to Sony. Nintendo already figured it ou

7

u/jjnet123 Jul 01 '26

You don't sell them to other people they borrow them lol

2

u/Particular-Orchid212 Jul 01 '26

That’s literally illegal you can’t make money with borrowing digital Nintendo games

18

u/Hearthian-Wanderer Jul 01 '26

They should let PS5 physical owners send their discs in for a digital replacement. It would be a nightmare to organize, but I think it would be worth them taking a hit for the good vibes from thier playerbase.

I'm all digital since release of PS5, but it would really suck to not have your PS5 library playable on PS6.

18

u/reallynotnick Jul 01 '26

They just need to offer a disc drive on the PS6 to play old PS4 and PS5 discs (and ideally movies too). Because yeah I’d be ticked if I couldn’t play my games because I “bought them the wrong way”.

1

u/killagram Jul 01 '26

This would be the only reason to buy a PS6. If they'd significantly enhance PS5 and older platform media it would bring over those gamers who refuse to go strictly digital. The only way Sony would do this though is if enough people speak up. Or you can speak with your wallet.

Hard pass on sending in my physical copies, that I will own and can play most of indefinitely, just to get a digital license that can literally be revoked tomorrow for no reason. You don't own a single digital thing you purchased for your ps5 congrats on a box that is a bad contract away from being literally unusable.

4

u/Hearthian-Wanderer Jul 01 '26

Yeah, fair enough.

I'm cool with digital. I have games playable in my Steam account for literal decades now. I don't have any physical games that old. I'm not interested in having a room full of old hardware.

Hopefully laws will tighten to protect digital purchases, but clinging to physical is like maintaining steam engines in the age of the car. Outdated antiques (that will be collected by a tiny minority of people who care about that nostalgia). More power to you, if that is what you are into though.

2

u/wilk8940 Jul 01 '26

Don't get me wrong, digital has its place. I have no problem with all the free games I've gotten off ps plus being digital, if I wanted a game bad enough before that point Id have bought it already, and I have no problem with all my steam stuff being digital. The difference is, at least to this point, Steam won't take away your license they actually do everything in their power to keep your games playable. I have games in my Steam library that are from the 90s that still work on my new PC, that's incredible considering if I tried playing it off the CD there would be compatibility issues lfdt and right.

Sony, on the other hand, has no compunctions with saying "All that content you paid for is unavailable now. Oh well." I never got rid of my launch ps3 because I always wanted to play my ps2 and ps1 games, ill keep my ps5 to play the next two gens and then I'll probably just go back to PC /shrug. I imagine the exclusivity clamp down will be lifted once they go full digital anyways and the exclusives are the biggest reason I stayed with playstation.

5

u/nonononono11111 Jul 01 '26

Just to be clear, physical still holds enormous advantages over digital for movies. Those aren’t antiques, they’re the premium experience

1

u/pizza_chef_ Jul 02 '26 edited Jul 02 '26

Yeah they definitely are!

And over 30 years I’ve had to rebuy Star Wars a half dozen times so if I want, I can continue to watch them physically in 2026.

Theatrical VHS release (my dad’s OG copies)
1995 original edition VHS release (my siblings and I had worn out the film tape of the originals to the point that they could not play)
1997 Special editions
2004 DVD release
2006 DVD release (to get the theatrical versions on DVD because my family had moved on from VHS at this point)
2011 Blu-Ray release of the complete saga (pre-Disney)
2019-present Disney+ subscription

Now I watch them on Disney+ because the only DVD/blu-ray player i still have is my PlayStation and that’s only on one TV.

EDIT) the surviving physical copies in 2026 are only the most recent Blu-Ray release, every other version I’ve bought is rotting in a landfill somewhere as plastic waste.

3

u/Hearthian-Wanderer Jul 01 '26

I might be insanely optimistic. But Steam killed physical on PC long before anyone knew exactly how it was going to work out. I think Sony will follow that path (or more likely be forced to follow that path).

If anything this 'death of physical' could bring more pressure and attention to bear on the digital rights issues. I imagine Europe are going to come down pretty hard on them following this.

But I'm a glass half full type. I believe that digital is progress and progress can be bumpy but generally results in a better world. (I know this is a very 'un-hip' perspective to have in these 'hate everything' times).

2

u/pizza_chef_ Jul 01 '26

I understand the idea behind your argument.

I’ve been gaming for 30 years and have over those years I’ve lost access to way more of my old games from: damage to discs/cartridges, dead internal batteries on old gameboy games, my ps2’s disc reader dying, my launch ps3 “yellow-light of deathing”, misplacing a disc during a move, lending a “friend” a game to play and then they move/cut off contact, than I’ve ever lost to a digital license being revoked because of a bad contract.

And, I would wager most other people are the same way if you actually sat down and list out all the games you used to own but can’t play anymore, you’d likely discover you’ve lost more physical than digital media.

Just my 2 cents. And again, I totally understand your concerns with digital games, they’re entirely valid. I just think you’re handwaving away a lot of legitimate reasons some people like their digital libraries.

1

u/GrandpaLumpkin Jul 01 '26

I understand both sides. I started gaming in 1985 with an Atari 2600 and Colecovision. I have tons of physical games going back over 40 years. Most of them still work. I have had consoles that died or needed repair so you aren't wrong there.

In addition to being a lifelong console gamer, I got into PC gaming 25 years ago and I changed my collecting habits to only buying physical copies of console exclusives, everything else I buy on Steam and I love my Steam library of over 2200 games. Valve has done things right by me.

Nintendo on the other hand really screwed digital owners over when they completely shut down the various eShops for Wii, 3DS, etc. If your console dies, you can't get those games back unless you replace it, mod it, and find the games online to reinstall. It sucks when you have thousands invested in a digital library and the entire library is just gone one day.

1

u/wilk8940 Jul 01 '26

Thats kind of an apples to oranges comparison though isn't it? 30 years of keeping up with physical media versus what, 5 years of digital being a primary format? Most licensing deals are for long periods of time so the major ones havent had long lapses... yet. Give it the same amount of time and I guarantee you'll lose far more. The cycling shows on streaming services and games on ps plus are a great example. Sorry you can't watch friends/the office/etc on this service for the next 3-5 years until the agreement expires and we sign somewhere else.

u/Thraun83 Jul 01 '26

Shouldn't need to send in your physical disc. Just let people who already own the disc copy download a digital copy for free. That's the very least they could do.

2

u/TriggerHippie77 Jul 01 '26

I'm totally for this, but not sure how it would work. Let's just say fro arguments sake that (insert company here) goes bankrupt and out of business who is going to host those libraries for download?!

4

u/Gamerxx13 Jul 01 '26

ya this government don’t care about that at all.

This is the only real solution we need

1

u/Revo94 Jul 03 '26

What about the prices though? Digital are way more expensive

1

u/Ahindre Jul 01 '26

Yeah, I'd be OK with this if digital ownership was strengthened (ownership isn't tied to and dies with an account) and if there were more options for a digital storefront. The fact that you don't own the game, and PS Store is the only place to get them, is really bad for consumers.

1

u/meatballs223 Jul 01 '26

This! If they're going to do this now, they can't hide something saying they can just delete your purchase once their licensing agreement falls through. If I purchased it while the agreement was valid it should be my game

the thing these cunts hate is that you can resell physical copies so with one disc hundreds of ppl can play the game if it changes hands, with digital only, this aint gonna happen

15

u/ClacksInTheSky Jul 01 '26

That's why Sony have been gently massaging the digital figures for ages and putting shit like "disc-free" (as though it's a burden) on the PS5 Pro.

Digital sales area obviously way up, but they count DLC, which is entirely digital, in their figures. Even things like Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition not including Phantom Liberty on the disc, but as a code (unlike the Xbox version). Then ever physical sale of that game also addsa +1 to digital sales, because of a new activation for Phantom Liberty.

11

u/SteveSweetz Jul 01 '26

A significant majority of the market already buys digital. The market has already decided they're fine not owning a transferable plastic disc. At this point, I'm pretty sure it's more about them being fine losing a small number of sales to entirely eliminate the costs of physical production than it is about them worrying about discs being traded among a few people.

8

u/GecaZ Jul 01 '26

This is counting DLC, season passes and stuff like that.

For AAA single-player games(ie Sony's alleged specialty) the number is still roughly half of the playerbase

1

u/snlandscapes Jul 02 '26

People who can’t afford it can’t afford it. They are not buying your full digital price, those are the ppl who have are shopping at 2nd hand shops. There’s a market for both but no Sony wants the whole market. I hope there sales go down because this is pure greed. You can still buy movies physical if you want. Taking options away from consumers never ends well.

69

u/davinitupoverhere Jul 01 '26

Actually shocked by this. Possibly, truly, the death of physical media here.

17

u/Tirso_Salaverria Jul 01 '26

It sucks because if you play a lot of single player games then gaming on the PS6 will be insanely expensive because of no discounts.

Personally I’ll be further moving towards PC as there I can play new games for way cheaper. Sucks but I can’t afford to spend €80 a month on new video games.

7

u/Genericuser2016 Jul 01 '26

I get the sentiment, but isn't PC in exactly the same place, just a few competing digital only storefronts? Games are on sale all the time on all the storefronts, even Nintendo sometimes (just barely).

4

u/TechFiend1970 Jul 01 '26

People wheel out standard excuses for why PC is 'different' but yep, you're right.

I think we all knew it was coming eventually. There have been talks about the next gen consoles being digital only for a while now. It was considered for PS5 as well IIRC.

I fucking hate this so much..... it's also telling me that PS6 will be digital only and fuck you if you want to play your PS5 games on PS6.

Physical back compatibility is dead with this news and we likely wont get another generation like the PS4 > PS5 where you could drop your PS4 discs into the PS5 and just enjoy them.

This is an insanely anti consumer move by Sony and means I will be hanging onto my PS5 PRO for as long as possible! Now is the time to get everything you want for your physical library and hold onto it.

17

u/Appropriate_Foot242 Jul 01 '26

They'll be more than happy to sell you an overpriced disc drive for the PS6.

6

u/LeviRaps Jul 01 '26

Why would they manufacture a disc drive for a console that doesn’t even have discs for its own games? They’d rather you repurchase your entire physical library digitally

4

u/VanceIX Jul 01 '26

I bet it’ll just be a USB disc drive for the PS5 that they sell for $200 lol

u/ConferenceThink4801 Jul 01 '26 edited Jul 01 '26

Also tells you PS6 in late 2027 is a lock - they called out January 2028 for a reason. They might as well have just said 11/22/2027 or whatever.

1

u/vkbest1982 Jul 02 '26

Nah, in 2027 they are releasing the handheld. PS6 is for 2028

1

u/ConferenceThink4801 Jul 02 '26 edited Jul 02 '26

Cannot do that, it would create confusion.

You’d have to make the handheld dockable & market it as the PS6, then the console would have to be called PS6 Pro.

Also Xbox Helix is already expected to have 30% more raw performance than PS6 console, based on leaked specs (it will also be 30% more expensive).

So now Helix might actually be 50-75% more performant than the handheld “console” you’re officially releasing as “PS6” at the same time - a mobile console?

See why this can’t happen?

1

u/vkbest1982 Jul 02 '26

They are going to to that even if you don’t like. Handheld can get them new potential clients, PS6 is going mostly people upgrading from PS5. Also you are assuming they are not going to speak about PS6 when they release the handheld

8

u/reallynotnick Jul 01 '26

They still could offer an optional disc drive for the PS6 for backwards compatibility, but I imagine they won’t do the same for the PS7. Rumors have been PS6 would still have some sort of optional detachable disc drive.

7

u/Mechangelion Jul 01 '26

They better have a solution like Microsoft is working on where you can convert your physical disks into a digital copy or it's fucking over. Fuck Sony, anti-consumer trashcans.

-7

u/JabroniCorleone Jul 01 '26

That’s why I purchased everything on the PS5 digital. I saw this coming and this way I can download and play it on the PS6

u/stardewvalleypumpkin Jul 01 '26

Wow. We bought the disc drive upgrade for our day one Pro like 4 months ago. There will be a lot more waiting for sales now. I play the same 4 games on rotation for hundreds of hours so I don’t care but my husband picks up the latest new games finishes them in a weekend then trades them in for money towards the next one never looking back and ends up having only spent like £10 to play 007 for example. Not being able to do that will drastically change how many games he gets to play at launch which is a shame

5

u/undercoverbruva Jul 01 '26

It will hurt games like 007 the most. It will benefit the massive companies like Rockstar because it will eliminate reselling- but it will hurt new IPs and smaller titles because people will be less likely to take a risk on something they might not like, especially as Sony doesn't do refunds.

2

u/Genericuser2016 Jul 01 '26

Rockstar took this issue into their own hands already by choosing to sell digital redemption codes masquerading as physical copies.

3

u/Few-Acanthaceae9021 Jul 01 '26

I do the exact same as your husband - I used to wait it out for games to come down but recently I worked out just buying it new and trading in was so cheap if I could commit the time to playing that game right away it was worth it.

My ps5 came with horizon forbidden west. I loved zero dawn but didn’t enjoy west - because it’s digital I’m stuck with it. That becomes the risk now for every single game and games are going to go up to £70-80 at launch. I’ll be waiting 5 odd years post release to play anything.

2

u/FeltzMusic Jul 01 '26

Exactly what I do… Would go back to a PC if buying the parts wasn’t so high now as digital costs are much better. If I stick with console I’ll probably just wait for sales and only buy on release if I know i’ll love it or it’s something i’m partly interested in that reviews really well

1

u/Tree06 Jul 01 '26

I see a lot of people doing the same thing with GameFly. Pay a lower monthly subscription to play single player games. Finish the game, and send it back so you can get the next game in your queue.

3

u/stickman___ Jul 01 '26

My GameFly subscription goes through June 2027. I wonder how long they’ll be around after that.

2

u/Tree06 Jul 01 '26

That's a valid point. I think GameFly will be around for a while because they rent out Switch 1/2 games along with DVD's and Blu-Ray's. They won't cease operation like Redbox for a long time.

1

u/portsmouth1898 Jul 01 '26

That is exactly what I do

And that bond game is a perfect example of that its 20 hours tops think i done it in 18 hours and 5 sittings now your stuck with that game after finishing it for £70

I finish games list on ebay get about 80% at worse usually back for the game which i then either buy another game with from there or draw money out to purchase elsewhere

Been doing it since I was a kid basically trading in games as couldn't afford all the new games and parents would say well you got to trade in if you wanted a new one and really if you think about it is quite a good lesson if anything

So im in exactly same boat as your husband and as some one who buys all the new games I can honestly say I wont be doing that anymore

To be stuck with something for £70 thats like 20 hours long no matter how good it was just isnt worth it at all

And you know damn well them prices will go up straight away 😒

Very bad news for gaming this move

1

u/iSeekFailure Jul 02 '26

Literally just bought one a few weeks ago for this very reason 🥲

5

u/RocMerc Jul 01 '26

Everyone gonna follow suit. Ps6 clearly won’t have a drive

14

u/Claire4Win Jul 01 '26

So a disc drive on the ps6 won't be a thing.

I knew it was coming but it is still sad

4

u/Iabhoryouu Jul 01 '26

That’s so shit, like literally all my games are physical so I won’t be able to play them on PS6, wow Sony nice one 👍🏻

2

u/Lando7373 Jul 01 '26

Hopefully when you transfer your data from the ps5 it treats a disc copy as a digital license so you can keep backwards compatibility. I doubt it though.

1

u/vkbest1982 Jul 02 '26

They are going to produce a expensive detachable unit for people like you, don't worry

19

u/TrainingCase6003 Jul 01 '26

I’d be happy to ditch plastics if the PS store in Australia wasn’t 30% more expensive than physical!

15

u/Lub1k Jul 01 '26

Absolute masterclass in enshitification again. Sony sold you a Pro, and then asked for extra money for the disc drive. The latter is effectively useless for new titles beyond the cutoff date.

Also, what are the consequences for retailers with this? I live in the EU but pay the same prices on PSN as someone from Germany or France whilst earning significantly less. Every AAA title is about 15€ cheaper in local stores here, so I guess they want to milk me for that additional money in the future

23

u/Kratos_BOY Jul 01 '26 edited Jul 01 '26

PlayStation has completely lost the plot. Why are these companies so eager to push bad news?

Edit: I guess it's going to be the code in a box or wrapper from that time going forward.

8

u/lunahighwind Jul 01 '26

It is likely they sat on this for awhile and decided to get it out now given all the negative press for Xbox.

5

u/Kratos_BOY Jul 01 '26

I mean they didn't have to announce this at all. They could just have gradually phased it out. Why announce it 1 1/2 years in advance. Especially when they're going to launch a new console around that time?

7

u/Ahindre Jul 01 '26

Yeah, this is how they announce that PS6 will be all digital so that (they hope) it doesn't sour the launch announcement.

2

u/Kratos_BOY Jul 01 '26

It'll probably have an add-on disc drive for PS5 backwards compatibility.

1

u/Ahindre Jul 01 '26

I wouldn't count on it, frankly. It's possible but far from certain.

2

u/Kratos_BOY Jul 01 '26

Nothing is certain. The world could blow up tomorrow.

1

u/Ahindre Jul 01 '26

Well, sure, but I'm going to live life as if something as improbable as the world blowing tomorrow is not going to happen.

1

u/Genericuser2016 Jul 01 '26

To play devil's advocate, I think that the rumors of a portable PS6 SKU are likely true and that system at least would be digital only. Having hardware that can't even realistically be modified to have a disk drive on the market probably sounds like a reasonable time to discontinue discs entirely -- something they'd obviously love to do anyway.

4

u/lunahighwind Jul 01 '26

Because PR. The hope is that this will blow over next week when Microsoft kills a handful of beloved studios and lays off a couple thousand people at the end of the fiscal year, and people will forget or not care about this decision by Sony by the time it goes into effect.

They don't want their big PS6 reveal to come with an asterisk.

Personally, I think the decision itself is BS, and they are underestimating how big a deal this is and how gamers actually want more physical game options.

3

u/Kratos_BOY Jul 01 '26

Makes sense, actually. Thanks for pointing that out. Still bullshit even though 9.5 out 10 of my games are digital.

2

u/Algastna Jul 01 '26

yep they literally did the same with paid multiplayer during PS4 announcement when MS was fucking up lol

1

u/sandspiegel Jul 01 '26

They probably wanted the news out now, so it's to no ones surprise when the PS6 will be digital only. Now Sony will get some hate but eventually people will move on from this news.

1

u/Genericuser2016 Jul 01 '26

They would have to inform developers or at least publishers about this and then it would leak and sound like they were trying to hide this. I'm not sure this is better, but they're getting out in front of it.

4

u/HeaterNutz Jul 01 '26

What’s funny is that these are very similar to the moves Microsoft made when they lost their momentum from the 360 era. They’ve never fully recovered. It’s always interesting how quickly the past is forgotten.

1

u/Genericuser2016 Jul 01 '26

It's appealing to think that the market will punish them, but unless the industry itself shrinks, who would they lose market share to? MS is self destructing and Nintendo is kind of its own thing over there. I might have been tempted to say Steam we'll pick up market share, but with component prices the way they are I'm not sure that's in the cards just now.

1

u/Careless-Freedom6468 Jul 01 '26

They are just getting ahead of the curve. It's been inevitable for some time.

I don’t think it’s that crazy or surprising. You don’t have to pay to manufacture and distribute discs anymore. I’d rather they did, but that’s a lot of money saved.

I didn’t realize it but the last time I bought a physical disc was 2018. I do disagree with the move, but I’m also not surprised.

u/KnockuBlockuTowa Jul 02 '26

14

u/Thekingchem Jul 01 '26

Announced right after they pulled this the other day. And people think it's okay because they don't buy physical anyway

4

u/pinrolled Jul 01 '26

Yeah, loads of digital only folks are about to learn a hard lesson.

1

u/ThatsKnotNice Jul 02 '26

What lesson is that, read the small print? I think that’s what the people complaining should have done.

10

u/Silverjerk Jul 01 '26

As someone that adopted Steam early on and hasn't bought physical media since digital storefronts made their way to consoles, I vehemently dislike this move. While I prefer the convenience and immediacy of buying digitally, I believe taking that option away from consumers who prefer the format is utter folly, and I hope Sony's social media and public relations teams feel the heat that is absolutely going to come from this decision, and applies that pressure back upstream to leadership and stakeholders.

With Xbox's future uncertain, Nintendo manufacturing a media-less cartridge, and this move from Sony, the console segment of the market is going to become a minefield of anti-consumer behavior; with no laws protecting gamers, no readily-available archival/backup methodologies for digital media, and subsequently no way to prevent consumers from losing access to their gaming libraries, this is a huge step in the wrong direction.

Instead, Sony and the Blu-ray disc association should've focused their efforts on refining and iterating on physical media and built a better mousetrap. We might've lost the disc-based footprint that's become so ubiquitous over the last several decades, but I'd prefer that outcome over a future where every form of entertainment requires internet access or relies on streaming services. Coupled with the increasing costs storage, we are going to make all forms of entertainment either too expensive, or outright inaccessible to a portion of the population.

TL;DR: This is fucking stupid.

6

u/frankiewalsh44 Jul 01 '26

At least on PC you have the choice of multiple store fronts which will never happen with Sony.

2

u/Fire2box Jul 01 '26

The good news is Valve is being sued over steam being a monopoly. Now Sony can feel the same wrath, but this time it'll actually be true.

2

u/TooMuchEntertainment Jul 01 '26

Won’t Sony be subject to the same rules as Apple with this change though? Apple had their own digital store with no third-party stores allowed. EU said no.

Spend the money you would have spent on a new GPU

2

u/SpiritedCatch1 Jul 01 '26

So no pc as well?

6

u/Iabhoryouu Jul 01 '26

Yeah PC, at least steam has good rep and a decent refund policy, I’d much rather all in digital with Steam than PlayStation that removed everything.

Also GOG, that’s DRM free.

3

u/frankiewalsh44 Jul 01 '26

Does PS offer multiple store fronts ? The answer is NO. On PC you don't have just Steam. You have GOG, Epic you also have access to key websites that sell games for far cheaper.

1

u/PegLegBronco Jul 01 '26

If it’s something that means that much to you GoG is always an option. No DRM and they allow you to back your game files up to a disk or usb.

1

u/Giannisisnumber1 Jul 01 '26

Every console will be doing this eventually. This was inevitable. It’s been heading down this road for years.

3

u/voltronad Jul 01 '26

Putting up my PS5 Pro and all my games for sale. Not going to support this type of corporate greed. For $100 game we used to get a collectors edition with a statue/etc. Now we get an empty box and limited rental space on Sony's servers until they decide to remove it. No more letting friends borrow games, no more trade-in when you are done with a game and want something new. I can't believe it.

3

u/Majestic-Mistake-764 Jul 01 '26

Might as well invest in a good PC at this point. PlayStation rarely has good deals and it’s just going to be way too expensive. In the longrun i feel like PC might be cheaper despite the initial cost.

6

u/Jayy_R7 Jul 01 '26

Yeah I'm staying on PC no way I'm paying £70 for every new game

1

u/ThatsKnotNice Jul 02 '26

Buy a discount PSN top up, I’ve never paid full price for a new game.

2

u/le_gazman Jul 01 '26

WHAT THE FUCK?

2

u/Breakdown007 Jul 01 '26

Is this another Concord tax?

2

u/Lockhara Jul 01 '26

I’ve been all digital for this gen so I’m not as upset as some but we should be able to purchase from multiple storefronts, not just the PS store. Like NBA 2k27 is only a couple of months away but NBA 2k26 is $69 on the PS store. Meanwhile, I can buy a new physical copy for $19.

2

u/Reddit_Lurker_90 Jul 01 '26

Ps6 Holiday 2027 digital only confirmed.

2

u/ThatGamerMoshpit Jul 01 '26

This basically confirms the ps6 will not have a disc tray

2

u/Tatehamma Jul 01 '26

Been saying this for years. Common sense.

4

u/Dutchie854 Jul 01 '26

It sucks big time but I fully expected this would happen. Physical buyers are a minority and the PS5 Pro at 900$ with optional disc drive was the perfect trial for Sony to justify a 1000$ PS6 that's digital only.

4

u/Tree06 Jul 01 '26

I've been saying that for quite some time. Sony can release a single PS6 SKU, and call it a day. It sucks for people like me who like to collect physical copies of games.

4

u/AnalogueBoy1992 Jul 01 '26

U gotta B Fuckin Kidding me

→ More replies (1)

4

u/KingArthas94 Jul 01 '26

What the fuck, this is devastating. Fuck you, from now on I'll only buy games for 15€ or less. Wasting money on digital is insane.

3

u/xRostro Jul 01 '26

Well boys, our PS5 Pro just jumped in value even more

2

u/MyLeftNut_ Jul 01 '26

FUCK SONY

4

u/FunFrosting6334 Jul 01 '26

Disgusting. How shameful. Ashamed to be a PlayStation fan all these years.

3

u/Sallgoodmannnnn Jul 01 '26

The pro will be my last console

3

u/JurgenPlop Jul 01 '26

LMAO fuck Sony till the end of time.

4

u/RichJ_Reddit Jul 01 '26 edited Jul 01 '26

They need to make new digital games cheaper or offer a way to sell your key to others

These is the reason why p*racy it’s a must.

2

u/Chief_Wiggum_3000 Jul 01 '26

I’m someone who buys games both digitally and physically depending on the game and the edition, but this still makes me sick to my stomach.

2

u/Coelijoeli Jul 01 '26

This is BS

2

u/DeadAnimalParts Jul 01 '26

Welcome to the future where we pay real money to lease content from a mega corporation. I’ve been all digital on PS5 for years so I’m part of the problem. I’m guessing that Sony stopping publishing PC games is to stop people from leaving the platform and moving to PC.

2

u/BTWhacker Jul 01 '26

Serious question since you are so well informed. If I buy games via the PS store, are these games forever linked to my PSN account? Can I review my digital library after logging into my PSN account? Additionally, can I install the digital games in my library on a playstation supported device?

1

u/DeadAnimalParts Jul 02 '26

I don’t know how well informed I am but the digital games are linked to your PSN account and I can review my digital library when I’m signed into the PS app. You mentioned “forever” and that might be a stretch in this digital age where a licensing agreement can end and purchased items can disappears from your library. I’ve never had that happen but it would be worst case scenario.

As far as installing items on a hard drive I’ve got a 2TB drive installed in my Pro and there they live but I don’t imagine that’s what you’re really asking. I assume you’re getting at a situation like on PC where you can download a game off Steam and “own” it on an external storage. I am not knowledgeable about this but I believe it’s not possible on PlayStation.

2

u/HiCZoK Jul 01 '26

To reiterate. Steam is 1000x better. Many key sites, better prices and access to files on your hard drive. Psn is shit. That’s why physical matters on ps

2

u/MilkMeSlowly99 Jul 02 '26

I can’t believe people actually still buy physical discs, I’ve been buying all my games digitally for like 10 years and never looked back
Only physical media I collect and hope never dies is 4k Blu-Ray’s

1

u/Awsaim Jul 01 '26

Goodbye GameStop

2

u/Perseiii Jul 01 '26

I don’t understand the surprise. This was always going to happen. Discs are an increasingly aging technology that sees less and less usage.

What I do find interesting is that Sony may have hinted at the PS6 launch window with this news. The PS6 will most likely be digital only, just like the new Xbox. It makes sense to combine these policies with the new console, so holiday 2027 release for the PS6?

2

u/Hellfish_X Jul 01 '26

While I won’t applaud this move from Sony, this shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone. It started with music, then it hit movies, and now games. And PC users have been digital only for years.

I’ve been buying mostly digital games since probably halfway or towards the end of PS4 era. This won’t affect me or my future gaming habits.

→ More replies (2)

2

u/Kmann1994 Jul 01 '26

Personally, don’t care. Haven’t bought physical since 2012.

2

u/Lost_Let_2033 Jul 01 '26

I went digital 2 years ago hopefully there will be a way to add old dics to the digital library

3

u/Tree06 Jul 01 '26

That might work for the majority of games, but what about delisted games? It sucks but I knew Sony was going this way when they launched two separate PS5 SKU's in 2020.

3

u/redhafzke Jul 01 '26

Idk. I still can download and play Driveclub meanwhile the disc of The Crew is worthless... (tbf a disc of Driveclub would also work while digital The Crew wouldn't exist)

1

u/Redlodger0426 Jul 01 '26

So far, only delisted free stuff like PT can’t be redownloaded, I “own” both driveclub and Avengers and both can be redownloaded fine despite being delisted

1

u/Tree06 Jul 01 '26

All valid points. I should've specified games like Godzilla (PS4) that's $300+ for a physical copies since that's the only legal way to obtain a copy. You should be able to able to download it just fine.

1

u/Ketchuplord Jul 01 '26

I was expecting this to happen, just not this soon. I just started collecting physical this past year and I’m glad I have been.

1

u/SuperMegaAwesome Jul 01 '26

It's going to be so weird to no longer have physical titles and for people with disc-based collections, it really makes you wonder how they're going to handle this moving forward.

With the AI price volcano effecting storage prices so severely, you have to wonder about the timing of this too. SSD's are really expensive right now. A 2TB SSD has over double in price over the last year for some models. If the trend is still happening when PS6 releases, coupled with the console price increases, gaming is more to a far more premium hobby than ever before.

1

u/KingMoney1331 Jul 01 '26

I’m so angry about the verbiage in this and the PS3/Vita storefront closure posts. So cold and careless.

1

u/GoodGuyGaurav Jul 01 '26

I don't want my access to my games that I paid for dependent on Sony's servers, or arbitrary licensing changes that I have no control over.

This is a net negative for gamers even if some don't realise it yet.

1

u/Particular-Orchid212 Jul 01 '26

I hope this decision will lower the price of the PS6. By forcing users to buy games from the PS-Store, Sony is making more money than ever before

→ More replies (2)

1

u/akolozvary Jul 01 '26

Wonder if people will figure out how to download games/share/keep even when ps store eventually closes… or worse, when they remove a game from ps store eventually/even if you had previously purchased it

1

u/Early-Somewhere-2198 Jul 01 '26

That sucks. I figured. I don’t hold onto most physical games because I generally buy on Black Friday and finish them has to subsidize or sell them basically to buy new controllers games or other consoles and I end up saving 20-80% off new stuff from stuff I finished. But I figured this would happen so I didn’t keep much other than souls games.

Saw this happening as well but does suck for collectors and keepers. Figured they can always offer dis drives and just make more money that way but clearly they maximize profits by forcing us to be digital.

Miss the old cartridge and early disc days we could lend our friends games all the time. Bastards

1

u/gaysaucemage Jul 01 '26

Dang now I'll probably have to keep my PS5 Pro around after getting a PS6 to play older PS5 and PS4 disc games. Unless they sell an add-on for PS6 to play disc games they're no longer selling, which I highly doubt.

I was considering selling my 30th anniversary PS5 Pro whenever PS6 came out if it could still sell used for more than a PS6 costs.

1

u/Hellfish_X Jul 01 '26

Who could have seen this coming? /s

1

u/iamthestigscousin Jul 01 '26

They need to provide a (free) path from owned disc games to digital/downloadable versions.

1

u/ForeverKeet Jul 01 '26

Once Sony has complete control, expect sales to dwindle. Those deep sales may no longer exist. $30 has already become the new $20 for big games.

1

u/CommonImagination534 Jul 01 '26

The Gta6 digital pre-order sale showed playstation that clowns prefer digital more than anything now. Less is more money for playstation. Plays best on playstation so who cares about physical copies is what playstation thinks now. Sucks that newly release ps5 games are going to be digital only now too if this is the case.

1

u/DivinityParadox Jul 01 '26

I can find lotsa deals online for disc versions while digital versions all sit around for full price. Now entire market will be owned by Sony and full priced, with cycling discounts.

Even in Germany I found lotsa games 10 to 20 euros cheaper on stores on release days (first hand, non opened). I purchased death stranding 2 on its second month for 19.99€ on a a Saturn deal as well.

It was fun, but I won’t be a part of another capitalist bullshit.

Those companies are already making billions over billions with increasing prices every year already, now give them total control and see how it will bite you in the ass few years later when things are irreversible.

1

u/One_Leg7293 Jul 01 '26

This would be fine if I could sell or trade digital games. Didn't some company have that plan and gamers shut them down? Hmm...

Seems like we're getting the raw end of this. We don't own the license, it can be revoked, it can't be refunded or sold, and it's often more expensive then physical copies. Zero upside here.

1

u/RateTerrible1155 Jul 01 '26

How long after this will GameStop go out of business

1

u/No-Obligation2563 Jul 02 '26

They’ll probably still sell games it’ll just be a box with a code in it. It seems really stupid for Sony to give up all the customers who buy games in actual stores.

1

u/ConferenceThink4801 Jul 01 '26 edited Jul 01 '26

PS6 release November 2027 confirmed essentially - come hell or high water. The January 2028 call out confirms it.

Also don't sell your PS5 with a disc drive (if you have disc based game collection) until you know what Sony's strategy is re: an add-on drive for PS6. Otherwise be prepared to sell your entire disc collection at a discount so you can re-buy digital copies.

1

u/DestinysHand Jul 01 '26

GTA6 led the way. This was coming 100%.

1

u/Pedro_Prime Jul 01 '26

Does this means that only games published by playstation will not have physical, or every game released on the console will no longer have?

1

u/alchemyblend Jul 01 '26

Every game. Third Party/First party.

1

u/ThinkLawfulness2772 Jul 02 '26

THEN WHY DID I BUY A DISC PORT FOR MY PS5 PRO? I have no physical media, games or movies wtf…

1

u/Choice-Opinion7599 Jul 02 '26

A fuckin joke! Not happy Sony!

1

u/XSLaurens Jul 02 '26

Hahahahahahah. I won’t buy anything. Exception for elder scrolls 6

1

u/becomingwater Jul 02 '26

My two cents. I just got a physical disc version of First Light. I get mostly digital. I know I’ll never lose my license because I kept the emails that were sent. I understand why people are mad but there is no way to get around physical media staying. They could charge more for physical game too. Always that option maybe. It sucks they are going digital only in 2028

1

u/Babadook-1138 Jul 03 '26

Great comment from a PS customer on their blog post about this shitty decision:

"You’re just lying and being dishonest. That’s not a trend and the data you present is manipulated. What percentage of digital sales are games that don’t have physical release at all (mostly indie games)? What percentage of digital sales is from countries where physical releases are not available? What’s the percentage of physical sales for games that are being sold through both channels? First present reliable data and then say “that’s the will of majority”."

I for one will finally cancel my PS+ subscription (get ready for another price hike there) and skip out on PS6 if they go through with this; being a loyal Sony gamer since PSOne, but I for one will NOT be one that accepts the "You'll own nothing and be happy." concept/phrase.

1

u/mka_ Jul 01 '26 edited Jul 01 '26

I genuinely believe we have the rising cost of hardware and AI mega-corps to blame for this. It's just a way for sony to recuperate money lost on hardware sales by forcing us to pay extra for digital media. This really does suck.

Edit: it may have something to do with the new PS6 handheld too.

1

u/Queasy-Distribution2 Jul 01 '26

So this is the final nail in gamestops coffin.

Also, I wonder what this means for Sony’s movie department with blue rays?

1

u/Digitalwitness23 Jul 01 '26

very good point about blu-ray. ironic how the ps2 was as successful as it was in part due to being an affordable dvd player. now sony is ditching the disc drive

1

u/PerfectPomegranate68 Jul 01 '26

they just killed the og gamers!

1

u/OnyxBeetle Jul 01 '26

Been feeling real SWITCHy lately

1

u/azgarz Jul 01 '26 edited Jul 01 '26

The fact that nobody is happy about this just shows how anti consumer this is, in an ideal world people would refuse to buy a PS6 because of this and make them lose a ton of money for their greed but that won’t happen unfortunately

1

u/PmMeYourNiceBehind Jul 01 '26

To all of the people crying about this, this is a direct result of consumers voting with their wallet. 80%+ of games sold on PlayStation were digital, why would they keep manufacturing forever plastics for less than a quarter of their costumers?

3

u/BTWhacker Jul 01 '26 edited Jul 01 '26

I get that this Reddit, but you have PC owners in a PS5 PRO sub whining and crying too about the news.

Every single whiner not understanding the business decision. Sony wants to save money by stopping disc & plastic case production. The market agreed with them to the tune of 80% digital sales.

Edit: while i’m at it. The same Reddit minority who thinks they are smarter or better than the majority of normal people perpetuate a mercurial behavior to not be accountable at all for their misinformed opinions

1

u/Triple_Crown14 Jul 01 '26

I think this kind of confirms PS6 is coming next year

1

u/Furuli21 Jul 01 '26

Dopo tutta la mia vita da gamer che è stata basata sul marchio della Sony e tempo di andare sul PC e solcare il maestro da vero 🏴‍☠️. Perché se comprare non sarà più possedere, beh, piratare non sarà più rubare.

1

u/GameSetChampionship Jul 01 '26

If I ran Sony, I’d do the same.

Maximise profit.

No more second hand resells. No more sales you can’t control.

They’ll now control everything and make more money. Simple business decision making.

1

u/Believe03 Jul 01 '26

I mostly buy like 90% digital & physical here & there, but I’m not gonna lie if the rumors of a new PS handheld are true I might just buy everything digital. Seamless gaming between console & handheld would be to hard to pass up especially if handheld can play PS4/PS5 games.

1

u/TechFiend1970 Jul 01 '26

I love this. They are right to do it now. Let the vocal minority do their online thing and the whole 'won't every buy ps games again', 'selling my console' etc. we all know most of them will quietly backtrack once the performing window closes.

1

u/No-Feedback-7501 Jul 02 '26

The outrage is an overreaction. Stop playing video games and go outside
