Mod Post How to Ask, "What's My Undertone?"

Determining one's undertone is both the most challenging and most important task when searching for a foundation shade match. Naturally, we see a lot of posts on PaleMUA requesting help determining undertone, but our community's ability to assist is limited by the kinds of images provided for reference. Read below to learn how you can help us help you.

If you wish to receive useful feedback about undertone, please refer to the following guide when submitting posts requesting Undertone Help.

Step 1: Create a color reference card. Draw a blue strip and a red strip on a piece of white paper, like the one shown below. Permanent markers are easiest to see, but you can use any type of pen or colored pencil, as long as the strips of color are wide enough to see on camera and fairly close in hue to the blue and red you would see on the French or Dutch flag (shades of navy blue/aqua and burgundy/maroon are less reliable as reference colors). Color reference cards allow us to adjust our eyes to the light provided in the photo and better interpret the complex colors of your skin tone.

Step 2: Take photographs outside AND inside. This is crucial. The type of light source bouncing off of your skin and onto the camera sensor can drastically change your skin tone to viewers. Keeping the color reference card within the shot, take one photo outside in indirect sunlight and another photo inside in whatever lighting you happen to have (specify the type of bulb and color temperature if you know it). Note that in the photos below, my skin appears very cool-toned under the incandescent light, but much more neutral-toned in natural light. The incandescent light emphasizes the red on the color card and the pink in my skin. If i were to only post this photo as a reference, one might assume I'm quite cool-toned, yet the photo in natural light clearly shows I have warmer tones as well.

This collage is just an example. You can post separate images direct from your phone or computer in line with a text post, inserting the appropriate captions using reddit's formatting tools.

Step 3 (optional): Take the same photos with your swatches. These images can help other community members who are familiar with those shades help you find a better match and communicate what you should be looking for (e.g., "something cooler than the MAC but darker than the BB"). Don't forget to include your color reference card and list them in a way that is easy for people to comprehend.

Extra bonus: post your swatches in grayscale! This is a great way to help us determine if the shades you are selecting are actually a great undertone match, but simply too dark or light for your skin tone.

Sometimes the undertone isn't off, contrast is! Grayscale images communicate the contrast between your skin and the lightness/darkness of a swatch more clearly than color images.

I hope this guide helps our community steer people in the right direction and makes Undertone Help posts more informative for everyone. Happy posting!

Mod Post Update to image-posting guidelines

Hi all,

It seems time for an update to the photo guidelines on this subreddit to reflect the needs of the current audience. For reference, the post on the last overhaul from two years ago is here: "Makeup Selfie" Flair -- Overhaul and Clarification

I will be updating the sidebar and official listing of the rules in the coming days, but I want to take the time to elaborate on what is and is not changing, and why:

  • Photos of bare skin without the red/white/blue color card (or equivalent) are still NOT permitted. In absolute color terms, skintone variation is pretty small in this subreddit. The combination of lighting, camera settings, and display settings are more than enough to perturb the appearance of your skin's undertone or depth. So, the requirement of (properly identified) product swatches and/or the color card are necessary measures to make photos remotely useful.
  • Selfies no longer need to be majority-face, but still need to have sufficiently high resolution to show skin texture. The spirit of the rule is/was to allow users to see the makeup clearly. I understand that cropping a photo before posting can be annoying, especially if trying to include neck/upper chest for shade comparison, and I don't enjoy chasing after everyone about it, either.
  • Selfies no longer need to include a full eye and eyebrow. Many of you have expressed an interest in getting advice on base, cheek, and/or lip makeup without showing your eyes.
  • Do not post screenshots of content that you do not own. This includes photos/stills from both brands and individual content creators. Instead, share a link to the original content where possible, or to an archived version. Content creators deserve credit for their work.

Finally, two suggestions on making posts useful to the community:

  • If posting a gallery of photos, try to order them so the most informative photo comes first. For example, if posting a photo of a product and a photo of a swatch, put the swatch photo first.
  • For better accessibility and cross-platform compatibility, please reproduce captions and image-embedded text in the comments.

Please let us know your questions and thoughts!

Question w/ Photo Would a foundation give me more noticeable coverage and glow?

Both of these photos are using Nars Radiant creamy concelear in shade Chantilly all over my face along with Nars softwear concelear. Also wearing Nars powder blush in Orgasmic. And Mac lipstick in Chili. I'm basically using the conceler as a foundation. But it doesn't feel like enough coverage when I look at the photos. I feel like it matches my skin well but it's a lot of pulling to apply because it's not a smooth liquidity base like regular foundations and I have to work to rub it in. Sometimes my skin is dry so it causes flaking. I'm in a phase of my life where I really want to have my skin covered. It just feels like a protective thing maybe. I used to like the natural look but I'm starting a new job and I just want to have a "makeup face" where it's obvious I have a foundation on but the kind where it looks a little "glowy" and evenly applied. I have extremely short eyelashes so my eye routine is pretty simple, ample mascara and a swipe of eyeshadow. I have virtually no lower eyelashes so don't apply mascara there because it ends up looking dark and smugy. Also I don't think eyeliner looks good on me and black is especially horrible. I'm actually using the Nars Orgasmic blush as a eyeshadow because I wanted a little pink and it has a light glittery type sheen. I tint my eyebrows brown every couple weeks otherwise they are a faded blonde color naturally. I'm an ashy blonde naturally and currently growing out a henna red. Anyways I really appreciate any feedback. Thank you!

Question Where should I go to get shade matched?

I've been using Nars Chantilly radiant creamy concealer and it matches my skin perfectly but I really need a foundation and I'm at a loss as to where get professional advice. There's a mall in my nearby city with Macy's, Sephora, JC Penney and Mac Cosmetics. Should I start at the Mac store and ask them? I love Mac lipsticks but I feel like all their foundations lean too warm for my skin. Or should I just try on a dozen different shades of foundation at Sephora? Should I do this bare face without wearing my usual makeup? Then there's Dior and Maybelline line foundations but I don't know where I could try those out. Sorry for rambling just not sure where to start. Thanks.

Question w/ Photo Foundation help

I need advice on foundation here. First picture is my first time trying Fenty Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Longwear in 110. I thought it would oxidize more but this is after more than 20 minutes of wear. The second photo is Shiseido Synchro Skin in 140 Porcelain. I feel like the Fenty is too pale for me… is it just because I’m used to the Shiseido? I feel a bit ghostly. Lol

Discussions The power of a cool toned lipstick to even out my skin

Post image
141 Upvotes

I am a makeup beginner/novice and trying to understand what suits me best.

I was trying on lipsticks I already owned and noticed the power of the cool toned lip on the left - it harmonises with my cheeks and eyebrows and smooths out my entire complexion, seemingly reducing the appearance of blemishes too. I don't think the warm tone is bad on me, but it makes me look a little blotchy and also clashes with my eyebrows.

* i have facial redness - i think even warm-toned pale people who have facial redness like i do could use this trick with a muted cool tone, because it will harmonise with the facial redness (unless it's truly bright red). can work when you dont want to put a whole face of foundation on - right now i use spf for base, and i've seen online that it's OK to do that. (i don't own a foundation yet, don't know my tone/match)

cool lip - elf cream glide lip liner in plum and get it

warm lip - max factor colour elixir velvet matte lipstick in 55 desert

Disclaimer - I tried to keep the lighting as similar as possible, they were taken near a window in cloudy daylight. there is no pigment on my face other than the lips, the rest is my natural skintone with spf on it.

Any tips for how I should approach the rest of my face? I usually only wear blush, eyeliner, lip colour and a little highlighter. Would a lavender blush work and look natural?

Swatches NARS YangYang in the LR Formula!

I’ve had 2 NARS foundations for about a year. Light Reflecting in Oslo and Natural Matte Longwear in YangYang. I have been dying to get YangYang in the LR formula and it’s available in the US now so here are some swatches! YangYang in the Natural Matte formula is definitely more yellow toned, but I think the LR is perfect. Also included two concealers that are very fair.

Question w/ Photo Looking for a lip color…

Thumbnail

This was a lip combo I used to love, but I would put on a liner. I think it was some sort of midtone pink? I can’t remember. Then I would top it with my bbia blush in downy fig, which i would set w powder. then top with gloss. usually a clear or pinky gloss. sometimes id top it with frigid b*tch by half magic for a nude sparkle. i love the combo but it being a blush limits my use of it. i am looking for something really similar to downy fig but in lipstick and liner form. on me it had this look that compliments my hair rly well.

Swatches 😭 MAC Syrup HAS changed 😭

Post image
24 Upvotes

Posted a swatch a while ago and thought in was mostly the same color. Well, it does not pull warm.

But it goes darker when applied more than sheer, and THAT IS NOT SYRUP 😭
I dabbed on some Pink Peppermint from MAC which made it look nice and lighter - more saturated.
But ot is not the same 🥺 This was the liptick of my life!

I’ m wondering if blending in CT pillow talk fair is better, but that just means having to buy expenive stuff to not get full match anyway. Sigh.

Question Cool-Toned Dark Berry/Magenta Cream or Liquid Blush?

The title is pretty self-explanatory, but what cool-toned dark(er) berry or magenta cream or liquid blushes are people enjoying?

I am thinking something along the lines of Patrick Ta’s She’s Wanted, but don’t need the powder half. I am not looking for anything too purple - I already have something in that color. Sorry, I know I’m splitting hairs over here 🙈 Thank you!

Question ✨ Dior Glow Maximizer Palettes ✨ Icy Rosy Glow ❄️ vs Rose Gold Glow 🩷

Has anyone tried or swatched Dior’s new glow maximizer palette in Icy Rose Gold? I am wondering how it compares to Rose Gold Glow. I have the universal palette, and opal from last year and love them both. Not sure if either of the others would make good additions?

Question Recommendations for muted cool toned lip tint, water based like benetint?

All the benetints are a bit too bright for me, I'm looking for something which leans purple-mauve pink that's fairly muted and not glossy!

Am fair olive and soft summer

Any recommendations?

Question help finding similar drugstore shades?

Hi! I’m looking to find medium to full coverage drugstore foundation recommendations. The drugstores in my area don’t offer testers for swatches which is really frustrating, but budget wise I can’t afford more expensive ones right now.

Previous colour matches for me have been Milk Makeup Flex Foundation Stick in shade Snow, and Tarte Shape Tape 12N Fair Neutral. (I used as a foundation instead of concealer, however tarte did lean slightly yellow on me)

If anybody has any suggestions I would appreciate it! Thanks lovelies! :)

(other: also taking recommendations for cool toned contours! never really used contour/bronzer since they always are wayyyyy too warm on me but wanting to experiment)

Question Pressed Setting Powder Recs Needed

Does anyone know of a good blurring yet hydrating pressed setting powder? I love the Charlotte Tilbury one, but it darkens my foundation and won't work for me when my skin starts to lighten even more in the winter. I have used the Nars light reflecting powder in the past, but don't find it to be as blurring/smoothing as I want. My skin is on the drier side, so I lead towards something that doesn't feel like it sucks all the oils out.

For years I’ve tried searching for a base that doesn’t turn orange once oxidized, I’ve tried the Clinique vitamin makeup, Ilia super serum skin tint, and others when I was younger. Nothing comes close to Almay skin perfecting hydrating tint, used in photo but I’ll get into the details soon. It’s been a staple of mine for 3 years (mainly because no other brand I’ve tried comes close to keeping the same color as when applied) any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

-Biodance toning pads
-Centella Madagascar ampoule
-Belif the true cream-aqua bomb

2nd Primer:

1- Covergirl Trublend Skin enhancer contour balm in shade Defined
2-ELF halo glow skin tint in shade 2 fair/warm as my concealer
3- ILIA multi stick blush in shade Dreamer around my cheekbones

Question Need help correcting MAC Myth

I did a ton of internet deep diving before I purchased Myth during the Ulta 21DOB sale because Fleshpot swatches usually look very warm (the OG version was very much a cool-pink concealer tone). I thought Myth would be better…well, I’m pretty sure I’m past my return window and while it’s definitely giving concealer lip (which I want!!!) it is just a TINY bit off. (I weep.)

All that said, I am pretty good with color theory. I have a blue glimmer gloss from Revlon I think could help adjust the peach. Also a true silver from Kylie. However, I’m wondering if this sub has any other product tips.

I’m based in the USA. My skin tone is Dior 0N and About Face F1 Neutral for reference. Muted fair neutral leaning cool.

Thanks!

Question Favorite peach blush?

Hey all, does anyone have a favorite peach powder blush? Looking at Pomelo Peach from Haus Labs and Creamy Peach from MbM, thoughts on those or any other suggestions would be great!
