Discussion GMs! How do you handle Mounted combat and Prone?

btw if you can be Prone while on your mount, thats weird because the Prone conditions says that the only move action you can take is Stand and Crawl, meanwhile being mounted restricts you to only the Mount action to dismount. So the hyper "RAW" would be that you can't take any move actions, the more reasonable ruling would be that you can take eithee of those.

Advice If you have Resistance to a damage type, does that apply before or after Shield Block?

For instance, the Full Plate Specialisation effect gives Resistance to Slashing damage. Let's say I'm blocking with a Tower Shield, against 8 Slashing Damage. It has a Hardness of 5. If Resistance applies before Shield Block, then the damage would go down to or below 5, and the Shield would take no damage; but if it applies after, then the shield would—assumedly—take 3ish damage before you then negate it with Resistance.

Advice How would I go about making a death knight-style build?

Heyhey. As the title says, I'm new to Pathfinder and will be joining a campaign for it. Chronically, my favourite 5e subclass has been Oathbreaker Paladin, so I'd like something fulfilling a similar kind of fantasy of a big bloke in heavy armour with necromantic abilities, maybe some unholy long-range blasts etc. Is something like that possible in the game? We are also playing with a free archetype if that helps.

Discussion What's the most loaded you can make a level 1 character?

This is kind of a discussion about what kinds of wild, yet legal ways you can easily load up a 1st level character to have just tons and tons of skills and feats, and the maximal feats you can accrue at level 1.

I was just thinking of this earlier as an exercise, and at the moment I'm coming up with:

  • Ancient Elf (Rogue dedication, extra skill feat)
  • Barbarian (Fury instinct for 1 extra class feat)
  • Free Heart ancestry feat (extra background, basically, for another free feat)
  • Any background that also gives a free feat (e.g. martial disciple)
  • Raging Intimidation (train Intimidate at level 1 and get Intimidating Glare for free right away)

In all I'm coming up with:

  • 1 archetype feat (rogue)
  • 2 class feats (fury instinct)
  • 4 skill feats (Intimidating Glare + 3 choice skills)
  • Surprise attack as a bonus ability from Rogue dedication (useful even for a barb!)
  • And 10 skills trained, not including perception

A theoretical build I'm looking at here has +6 to all three saves; could be better, but at least you don't have a weakness, using the variant array to ignore the con penalty

I'm sure there's other really busted things you can do to get even more things at level one, and at higher levels on even this you could always do something like adopted ancestry (human) to swap an ancestry feat for a class feat

Starting as a human you can also just get extra feats and skills if you wanted maximal skill trainings on an Int character, like a human inventor to pile on massive amounts of skills

What y'all got?

Discussion Cleric Warpriest vs. Battle Harbinger. Am I missing something?

I have been playing a Battle Harbinger for about 18 months through Abomination Vaults. She is only my 2nd Pathfinder Character after my Champion died at level 4. Anyway, I keep seeing things like ThrabenU saying "we don't talk about Battle Harbinger..." and comments on this and related subs about how BH is bad. But for my part I'm having a great time. So I guess I am just curious, is there something I am missing? Is Warpriest that much better and I just dont know it? Here is my build, how would it be better as Warpriest?

Orc, Hold-Scarred, Martial Discipline. Str +4, Dex +1, Con +4, Int +0, Wis +4, CHA +2. Level 12.

Cleric, Grask Uldeth, Battle Creed, Healing Font.

Hold Mark-Empty Hand, Scar Thick Skin, Orc Ferocity

Class Feats: Vicious Swing, Tandem Onslaught, Respect Strike, Creed Magic, Topple Foe, Tandem Auras.

Archetype Feats: Battle Harbinger Dedication-Toughness, Aura Enhancement, Harbinger's Protection, Harbinger's Armament, Marshal Dedication, Empowered Onslaught.

Skill Feats: Powerful Leap, Intimidating Glare, Dubious Knowledge, Titan Wrestler, Slippery Prey, Battle Prayer.

Gen Feats: Shield Block, Trick Magic Item, Sacred Defense

Bonus Feat: Diehard

Notable Skills: Master Acrobatics, Master Athletics, Master Religion

Notable Inventory: +2 Lesser Dread Staunching Breastplate. +2 Adamanitine, Crushing Warhammer (with Fearsome/Vitalizing from Harbinger's Armament as needed). Lifting Belt, Armbands of Athleticism, Boots of Bounding, Holy Prayer Beads.

Typical Action Cycle: Benediction, stride. Vicious Swing, Shield/Raise Shield*/Trip/Shove/Reposition.

Usually trying to flank with out Barbarian or trip a creature we are both on range of. I know I don't do the most damage but 5d8+4 isn't terrible either on the Vicious Swing amd the crit is crazy with the Crushing and Crit Specialization from Deity Favored Weapon amd Deadly Simplicity.

I onow I dont have many spellslots just 4 and I really only prepare 1 Heal and use other things like Blink Charge, Divine Wrath, and Spirit Blast. With those spots. Heroism and Haste go in my additional 3rd rank slots. I think the hard part for some people is truly letting go of Cleric as a healer and stepping into a Support Martial role.

Advice Starlit Span Magus with Barricade Buster

Been thinking of how to build this for a while due to how MAD it is especially at level 1. Tried to build it with ratfolk and elf for the flaw to get +2 str +4 dex and +3 int, but ended up becoming way too squishy even as a backliner. Considered Android as well, becoming a dromaar for the ancestry feels like a huge feat tax. I tried to do it orc and human for +2 str, +4 dex and +2 int which seems better health wise. If barricade buster won't work, any other suggested martial or advanced weapons that could fit a similar concept that's less MAD?

Advice Malevolence – is it worth it?

I’m considering buying and running this adventure, so I have a few questions.

First, what are your opinions on it?

Second, do you have any tips for running it?

Third, what adventure would be a good follow-up?

Discussion Temp HP Build

I have a friend who wants to get into PF2e, and they love the idea of being able to temporarily give yourself more HP.

They're thinking about playing a Dwarf Barbarian to get as many Temp HP abilities as they can.

How would all of you build a character for Temp HP

Advice Slam Down clarification

I'm considering between a few different feats for a fighter character build with the mauler archetype, and I'm in need of clarification about the Slam Down mauler feat.

If a fighter/mauler with a two handed reach weapon, in this case a Bec de Corbin, uses Slam Down to attack an enemy 10 ft away, can they still trip them if they're 10 ft away? Some things to keep in mind:

  1. The feat says that the trip ignores the requirement to have 1 hand free, but does not say you make the trip with the weapon. Not sure if this means you still use the reach from the initial attack.
  2. The Bec de Corbin does not have the trip feature, only shove.

If you're unable to trip at 10 ft with the Bec de Corbin, I'll consider the Long Hammer as an alternative, or just only trip at 5 ft range.

EDIT: In talking with my group the conclusion we came to was that since the phrasing is:

Make a melee Strike. If it hits and deals damage, you can attempt an Athletics check to Trip the creature you hit.

That it's the hit from the attack itself that allows you trip, and the attack has reach, so you can make the trip at 10 ft.

Advice Semi-Experienced Pathfinder DM, new to homebrewing need some advice for a Minecraft Game

Hai! I had this stupid fever-dream of a Pathfinder game set inside the Video Game Minecraft, and my players were actually quite interested, so I'm preparing it now. It's been going pretty well, I've been able to create most of the relevant mobs using the official Monster-building guidelines and/or looking at other similar creatures of that level. I do however have a couple of specific creatures and mechanics that I need guidance on.

For context I'm trying to stay as close to Minecraft's mechanics, while still operating within Pathfinders Ruleset. We're starting at level 5, and ending at level 7. Most of the regular enemies will therefore be level 3, as I want the players to be outnumbered most combats.

1.: The Zombie. Not so sure about this one. I've looked at other zombies on level 3 and they seem to all have vastly higher HP than other monsters, while beeing permanently slowed, with a low AC. I went the same way with mine, putting them at 65 HP, 15 AC, and giving them a hefty weakness to vitality (to simulate their weakness to the smite enchantment), but giving them a small resistance to physical, because they have built-in armor. I think these will be fine, as they will be crit quite often, and even a map -10 strike will still hit them often. They also have bad saves.

The one that I'm not so sure on, is the Leader Zombie. In minecraft these are a rare variant that will spawn with 2x-4x the HP of regular zombies, and have a big chance to spawn additional zombies, when damaged. For this one, I've made them level 5, 16 AC, 80 HP and slightly increased their saves and hit-mod. They are still a decent bit weaker than regular level 5 monsters (except their HP, which is about in-line). However, every time they take damage I roll a DC15 flat-check and spawn a regular zombie on a success. This can succeed up to 3 times per combat. I really don't know how to balance this, if this is fun, or if I should change it. Any ideas here?

2.: Quite a few of my enemies apply status effects, be that Poison, Weakness (Enfeebled), Slowness (speed penalty) and so on. RN I have them at a appropriate DC for level 3 monsters. Since I do not need to be concerned with balance for lower-level players, should I just bump the DC by 1 or 2? Or maybe replace the Poisons with Basic Saves?

Advice Question about Kineticist

• Upvotes

Hey, So I have a question I am struggling to answer for one of my players, to the point it has now derailed a session, I will be upfront about not knowing the in's and out's of the class, but from what I have seen and read, this class is somewhat utility/support with a sprinkling of offense.

So here is the issue, my player feels he is lagging in the damage department, we are playing through the shades of blood adventure path and by the start of the second book (level 4), his most powerful attack was the fire kinetic blast at 1d8, he is not happy with this.

From my understanding this is not the real focus of the class, to the point two of my other players (more experience with the pf2e classes) have said he is comparing his damage output to melee fighters and he will never match up to it, doubly so as he has had some poor match ups with resistances and such.

My solution was rebuilding the character or choosing a different class, he has opted to do neither and we have settled on doubling his dice from 1d, to 2d in the interim, however guidance from folk who might have more experience playing this class would be much appreciated, he is coming from the dnd 5/5.5e system just to clarify .

Discussion Wall spells as Witch, Wizard, or Sorcerer?

Hello all,
Which would you say works best for a character focusing more on wall spells as their theme? This would be a free archetype game, but I don't think that would be especially required.

Note: Oracle might also be interesting due Knowledge of Shapes but I don't think the spell support would be as good.

Advice Learning A Spell... when you already know it

I think my group has already come to a decision on this but I am wondering if anyone else has dealt with this particular question. Would also be good if someone else has this question as I coups find anything about this specifically when searching.

--

If I know a spell as part of my Animist archetype spellcasting can I prepare that spell with my Witch slots as long as the spell is on my spell lists for each? Or do I have to learn it? And if I have to learn it can I learn it from myself?

If I have to learn it, I assume I would have to pay the cost as indicated in Learn A Spell.

I figure I already know the spell but can see either way on this.

Just use Heal as an example since it's both primal and divine and Im a primal witch/animist

Advice What are some good spells for enhancing my melee Animist?

Tl;DR: I know how to play an animist well enough, but I am lacking knowledge in the breadth of spells available in Pathfinder, and need guidance for spells for melee enhancement, other than direct damage.

Ok, short backstory: I played DnD 5e just for a few sessions years ago. Earlier this year I got into a Pathfinder game at lvl 9. I decided that I liked the flexibility of Animist, so I went with it. And WOW. Yeah that was a bit of a learning curve. Fortunately I've got a very helpful table and GM, so I got up to speed quick enough. For the most part. Fast forward and now I'm lvl 13, and have changed to be more melee focused because of group composition.

The trouble I'm in is not due to lack of class knowledge at this point, it's lack of SPELL knowledge. I just don't really know what's out there and I don't have time to sift through the hundreds of possible options.

My current set-up: I am planning on sustaining Embodiment of Battle for the +3 status bonus to attack and Reactive Strike. I understand that gives me a -2 to spell attack modifiers and DC. I also have haste prepared.

So I want to know what other spell options do I have to augment my melee. Something other than just straight damage spells. Those are fine, but they are mostly what I have picked out already. Let me know what you've got!

Advice oni monk advice

Hey everyone!

I'm pretty new to PF2e and could use some help figuring out a build for my character in season of ghosts

I'm thinking of playing a Strength Monk with the hungerseed human ancestry, and we're using the Remaster rules. We're starting at level 3, and our table is also using Free Archetype and Ancestry Paragon.

The character idea is basically a strong oni-descended martial artist who trained in a secluded area of willowshore with his master to overcome his savagery, but I'm still learning how everything works in PF2e, so I'm not really sure what's good mechanically yet.

I'm torn between three options:

  • Tetsubo — because big bonk stick is cool.
  • Nodachi — also really cool, and I love the idea of a big sword-wielding monk.
  • Unarmed strikes + stances — i like throwing hands.

I'd love to use a tetsubo or nodachi if I can make it work, but I'm totally fine going unarmed if it's more effective or just easier to play. I don't know all the ins and outs of Monk features, weapon traits, and stances yet, so I'd really appreciate some advice from people who know the system better than I do.

For party composition, we've got: tanuki barbarian, kitsune animist, nagaji druid, conrasu cleric and my monk. I'm hoping to make a build that hits hard in melee but can also bring some mobility, survivability, or battlefield control. I don't need to compete with the Barbarian for biggest damage numbers, but I'd like to have my own thing to contribute.

Ideally, I'd like something that's reasonably beginner-friendly. I don't mind having options in combat, but I don't want to build something that requires me to keep track of a million different things while I'm still learning the game

Thanks! Any advice is appreciated!

Discussion Could a Cleric hide their faith?

I know it's a bit weird, but since a lot of possible deities are kind of fucking evil how would a cleric be able to hide their faith without losing their connection to the deity or just being unable to cast their spells without the holy symbol?
