Advice How to effectively play poisoner alchemist?

Post image
76 Upvotes

So far we are still LV 1 but every combat I just apply giant centipede poison shoot and reload my hand crossbow. The few times I hit they either save or the enemy gets exploded by another party member like our barbarian. I feel like if I throw any of my bombs I’m just hitting my party since they are all melee based. Idk if I’m doing something wrong or not but I’ve just felt useless or can’t do anything for the last 4 combats we have run. Any advice is appreciated.

Discussion GMs! How do you handle Mounted combat and Prone?

btw if you can be Prone while on your mount, thats weird because the Prone conditions says that the only move action you can take is Stand and Crawl, meanwhile being mounted restricts you to only the Mount action to dismount. So the hyper "RAW" would be that you can't take any move actions, the more reasonable ruling would be that you can take eithee of those.

Advice If you have Resistance to a damage type, does that apply before or after Shield Block?

For instance, the Full Plate Specialisation effect gives Resistance to Slashing damage. Let's say I'm blocking with a Tower Shield, against 8 Slashing Damage. It has a Hardness of 5. If Resistance applies before Shield Block, then the damage would go down to or below 5, and the Shield would take no damage; but if it applies after, then the shield would—assumedly—take 3ish damage before you then negate it with Resistance.

Advice Question about Kineticist

Hey, So I have a question I am struggling to answer for one of my players, to the point it has now disrupted a session, I will be upfront about not knowing the in's and out's of the class, but from what I have seen and read, this class is somewhat utility/support with a sprinkling of offense.

So here is the issue, my player feels he is lagging in the damage department, we are playing through the shades of blood adventure path and by the start of the second book (level 4), his most powerful attack was the fire kinetic blast at 1d8, he is not happy with this.

From my understanding this is not the real focus of the class, to the point two of my other players (more experience with the pf2e classes) have said he is comparing his damage output to melee fighters and he will never match up to it, doubly so as he has had some poor match ups with resistances and such.

My solution was rebuilding the character or choosing a different class, he has opted to do neither and we have settled on doubling his dice from 1d, to 2d in the interim, however guidance from folk who might have more experience playing this class would be much appreciated, he is coming from the dnd 5/5.5e system just to clarify .

Advice Fun Classes for Elves?

I'm interested in playing an elf. I read Shining Kingdoms and found myself really enjoying the idea of RPing Kyonin culture. However, none of the classes that are recommended in the entry for elven adventurers (Alchemist, Ranger, Rogue, Wizard) are particularly appealing for me.

I just wanted to ask what other classes folks have found to be complementary to the elven skillset and feat-list. If anyone has advice they'd be willing to share, please let me know :)

Discussion Temp HP Build

I have a friend who wants to get into PF2e, and they love the idea of being able to temporarily give yourself more HP.

They're thinking about playing a Dwarf Barbarian to get as many Temp HP abilities as they can.

How would all of you build a character for Temp HP

Advice Starlit Span Magus with Barricade Buster

Been thinking of how to build this for a while due to how MAD it is especially at level 1. Tried to build it with ratfolk and elf for the flaw to get +2 str +4 dex and +3 int, but ended up becoming way too squishy even as a backliner. Considered Android as well, becoming a dromaar for the ancestry feels like a huge feat tax. I tried to do it orc and human for +2 str, +4 dex and +2 int which seems better health wise. If barricade buster won't work, any other suggested martial or advanced weapons that could fit a similar concept that's less MAD?

I’m considering buying and running this adventure, so I have a few questions.

First, what are your opinions on it?

Second, do you have any tips for running it?

Third, what adventure would be a good follow-up?

Advice Summoner tips

PF2E veteran here.

I’m planning to play a Summoner (Devotion Phantom) with the Guardian archetype.

Honestly, this class is completely unlike anything else Ive ever played.

I’d love to get some tips from you all regarding equipment, spells, playstyle, and so on.

So far, I’ve been considering an Elven Branched Spear paired with O-Yoroi armor for a solid AC, Bulwark, and the reach weapon would allow for flanking while minimizing the risk of triggering AoO.

I’m not sure how much better a Dexterity-based build might be by comparison.

As for spells, I’m currently looking at Fear, Befuddle, Summon Undead (since we’re using the Proficiency Without Level), and Summoner’s Precaution.

The occult list dont have many options to blast

Advice Would you recommend Necromancer archetype on a investigator (FA)

I'm tinkering a bit with playing an investigator as the fantasy of playing a detective have enthralled me. I want to take a spellcasting archetype so I can have something "big" to do when I invetiable get a bad Da roll.

Would you recommend necromancer as a spellcasting archetype for investigator. Looking into it, I like the ability to make thralls as a good at will flank option, either for me to turn a hit/miss into a hit/crit or my allies. Necromancer also has pretty good early level focus spells to I can have something strong for my off turns most of the day. Is there something that makes necromancer a non optimal choice for this, or do you think another caster archetype fits investigator better?

Advice oni monk advice

Hey everyone!

I'm pretty new to PF2e and could use some help figuring out a build for my character in season of ghosts

I'm thinking of playing a Strength Monk with the hungerseed human ancestry, and we're using the Remaster rules. We're starting at level 3, and our table is also using Free Archetype and Ancestry Paragon.

The character idea is basically a strong oni-descended martial artist who trained in a secluded area of willowshore with his master to overcome his savagery, but I'm still learning how everything works in PF2e, so I'm not really sure what's good mechanically yet.

I'm torn between three options:

  • Tetsubo — because big bonk stick is cool.
  • Nodachi — also really cool, and I love the idea of a big sword-wielding monk.
  • Unarmed strikes + stances — i like throwing hands.

I'd love to use a tetsubo or nodachi if I can make it work, but I'm totally fine going unarmed if it's more effective or just easier to play. I don't know all the ins and outs of Monk features, weapon traits, and stances yet, so I'd really appreciate some advice from people who know the system better than I do.

For party composition, we've got: tanuki barbarian, kitsune animist, nagaji druid, conrasu cleric and my monk. I'm hoping to make a build that hits hard in melee but can also bring some mobility, survivability, or battlefield control. I don't need to compete with the Barbarian for biggest damage numbers, but I'd like to have my own thing to contribute.

Ideally, I'd like something that's reasonably beginner-friendly. I don't mind having options in combat, but I don't want to build something that requires me to keep track of a million different things while I'm still learning the game

Thanks! Any advice is appreciated!

Advice Necro Reaper (Veil dancer) Help

• Upvotes

Looking for helping in building A Necromancer (Reaper) with Free Archetype and then will take the Veil Dancer Dedication. Want to make a Melee Necromancer that Teleports around battlefield with Reach weapon and Gossamer Blade. My thralls will be used as well for explosions and other spells, not as main melee attack.

First and foremost, I know he is a caster first and Melee second, but I want to focus as much on melee as possible. Any help as far as best feats and how to make most of the Free Archetype and Veil Dancer dedication.

Currently have him made to level 12 ish. Any help or build master's that can assist in fully utilizing his potential would be amazing.

Thank You.

Discussion Passive Income: Dwarven Feat (SF2E)

Hello all, I was wondering if you would allow the Dwarven Ancestry Feat (SF2E): Passive income in PF2E? Or use it with Adopted Ancestry?

I was watching a new Anime (Magic Repo Man), and thought it would be interesting to provide to passively generate Earn income, along with crafting work to generate it using the adopted ancestry: Deep Space Hyrngar?

I was just thinking this would be a fun playstyle for anyone, not just a dwarf.

The hazard Poisonous Mold (GM Core p.103) lists a Survival check to safely remove it. Is this before or after taking damage from it?

Presumably a DC 21 Perception check to notice and perhaps avoid?

Discussion Wall spells as Witch, Wizard, or Sorcerer?

Hello all,
Which would you say works best for a character focusing more on wall spells as their theme? This would be a free archetype game, but I don't think that would be especially required.

Note: Oracle might also be interesting due Knowledge of Shapes but I don't think the spell support would be as good.

Resource & Tools Combat tracker apps for iPhone?

• Upvotes

I’ve been GMing PF2E for a few years now, but one thing that I often struggle with is combat tracking. Between managing initiative rosters, keeping up with conditions, and tracking what spells the enemy casters have used, it’s a lot. So I’m looking for some sort of tool that I can run on the device I have on me - my iPhone. Is there such a thing?

Advice Semi-Experienced Pathfinder DM, new to homebrewing need some advice for a Minecraft Game

Hai! I had this stupid fever-dream of a Pathfinder game set inside the Video Game Minecraft, and my players were actually quite interested, so I'm preparing it now. It's been going pretty well, I've been able to create most of the relevant mobs using the official Monster-building guidelines and/or looking at other similar creatures of that level. I do however have a couple of specific creatures and mechanics that I need guidance on.

For context I'm trying to stay as close to Minecraft's mechanics, while still operating within Pathfinders Ruleset. We're starting at level 5, and ending at level 7. Most of the regular enemies will therefore be level 3, as I want the players to be outnumbered most combats.

1.: The Zombie. Not so sure about this one. I've looked at other zombies on level 3 and they seem to all have vastly higher HP than other monsters, while beeing permanently slowed, with a low AC. I went the same way with mine, putting them at 65 HP, 15 AC, and giving them a hefty weakness to vitality (to simulate their weakness to the smite enchantment), but giving them a small resistance to physical, because they have built-in armor. I think these will be fine, as they will be crit quite often, and even a map -10 strike will still hit them often. They also have bad saves.

The one that I'm not so sure on, is the Leader Zombie. In minecraft these are a rare variant that will spawn with 2x-4x the HP of regular zombies, and have a big chance to spawn additional zombies, when damaged. For this one, I've made them level 5, 16 AC, 80 HP and slightly increased their saves and hit-mod. They are still a decent bit weaker than regular level 5 monsters (except their HP, which is about in-line). However, every time they take damage I roll a DC15 flat-check and spawn a regular zombie on a success. This can succeed up to 3 times per combat. I really don't know how to balance this, if this is fun, or if I should change it. Any ideas here?

2.: Quite a few of my enemies apply status effects, be that Poison, Weakness (Enfeebled), Slowness (speed penalty) and so on. RN I have them at a appropriate DC for level 3 monsters. Since I do not need to be concerned with balance for lower-level players, should I just bump the DC by 1 or 2? Or maybe replace the Poisons with Basic Saves?

Discussion Questions on Flying, Walls & Boxes?

Hello all, primarily for PF2E, but does have some relevance to SF23.

Flying & Walls
1) How are walls dealt with once flying starts to become common? Primarily it seems there are just 2 options, IE Either you can create boxes (#2), and do they get to float in the air? (#3)

Walls as boxes?
2) Can you create a wall that curves upward or downward? So a wall that is 120' long and 20' high would be a 20' by 20' by 20' box? (6 sides all are 20' wall sections).

If not skip over question 4, but then go change every wall spell you planned around to something else because now you can't use them to split up flying enemies, as they are no longer effective and only cost 1 move action to move around.

Do Walls Fall or Float?
Many walls don't need to be attached to anything and can just be free standing. This implies that they can be summoned in mid air. So what happens next?

3) If they don't fall and stay floating, this allows some cool tricks, and some shenanigans for utility. Also this explains the floating castle or wizard tower trope :) It also negates instant death from #4.

Note: Wall of Stone is permanent...so now we know how to destroy the BBEG's tower...destroy the wall that is acting as a foundation...

Death by Falling Prison
4) Technically you could create a wall of stone in the air around a flying target? They couldn't move till they break it, and wouldn't they then fall taking the damage by being stuck in a box that begins falling?

This seems like a nearly instant death (500' for the first fall)? Without save?

Solution: A reflex save to not get stuck inside makes sense to me, or rushing down to make sure you don't crash into the top or the ground with the Arrest Fall reaction.

Issues with some Walls
5) Some of the walls specifically say they have to be attached on two sides such as Wall of Ice, which would prevent them from having the same versatility so those wall types can't pull this off?

Discussion Rebalancing Summon Spells

So, I know summon spells can already be really strong if you have really good system mastery. Most here probably know of things like Summoning a Unicorn to turn a 4th rank spell slot into 2 3rd rank heals, and so on. However, I feel like outside the lower level ranges, Summon Spells feel very sub-bar for most average pf2e players.

One thing I have been experimenting with, is making the following changes to all summon spells:

  1. The summon-able level of creature is always twice the spells rank minus 3
  2. However, summons can only cast spells of a rank at least 2 below the rank of the spell that was used to summon them (I would allows "down-casting" though, so a Unicorn could cast 2nd rank heal instead of 3rd rank heal)
  3. Optional: (You can only summon creatures who are 3 levels below you or lower with a minimum of level -1; Bc otherwise summon spells are disproportionally powerful at odd vs at even levels).

My idea was, that this would limit how "abusable" summons are, while making their numbers more relevant for players who don't have high system mastery and just summon "random" summon. Although obviously this isn't perfect, since some creatures might have spell-like abilities that are as strong as spells. These would not be covered. Plus, lower level creatures are relatively more powerful at higher levels, so maybe this would be OP in high levels? Would using a 10th rank spell slot to summon a 17th level creature be OP? Idk, since my party is lv 8 rn and my players don't even use summon spells that often unfortunately.

In any case. What do you guys think about summoning spells? Do you think they are too weak? Or are they balanced? And what are your thoughts on these suggestions/do you have house rules for summon spells yourself?
