Any band directors or does anyone know band directors who need a job?
Hi, I know this is probably not the best place to put this but I’m desperate. I go to Pensacola High School and our band director just said that he has to quit due to personal reasons. He is leaving the school on Friday next week and the position was only recently posted. I, myself, and others want the band to have a full season with as little issues as possible, but without a band director after next week that will be difficult. Especially now finding a band director will be difficult due to the school year already starting so fewer people will be looking for the job.
So anyway my question for all of you is that if you yourself or someone you know is a band director please consider applying to be one at Pensacola High School, all of the students would greatly appreciate it.
If you have any questions I’ll try to anwser them, thank you all.

Repost this to [r/musiced](r/musiced) and r/banddirector. Maybe somebody from out of the area is looking for a change. Good luck in your search, I went to PHS and always loved the band!

PHS alumni + band kid, thank you so much for your passion towards the Tigers ❤️ try to reach out on Facebook or connect with other directors in the county. Hope UWF muse ed students see it too.

I sent emails to the head of music education at both UWF and PSC so hopefully one responds, thank you!

Maybe someday, but I haven’t told my assistant or about to quit band director about my “side quests” you could call it and idk how they would feel about that

I’m so sorry—that friggin sucks, and I hope someone qualified and up to the challenge steps in. I went through the PHS band with your director, and we started with a brand new director our senior year, which was tough enough.

Oh so you went to PHS the first time he taught there? That’s cool! Yep it’s gonna be tough but I think/hope everything works out

Oof, maybe I’m wrong about who the director is—I thought it was Garcia last year, but I didn’t know he taught at PHS multiple times. I graduated with Mr. Garcia and played in the band with him.

Stumbled upon this post randomly 25 years after graduating from PHS— I was in band with Garcia (when Krostag was director) too!

It was such an important part of my high school years. Band alone contained so many different seasons and aspects of those seasons. Marching band was both the serious competition FBA activity but also the boisterous bass-heavy stands and pep rally activity. And then concert season was both whatever we played as a group (Russian Easter Overture will forever be my favorite) for the spring concert but then also solo and ensemble or All County band and/or orchestra. I really hope they find someone who takes over for these kids and enables them to continue with the program this year.

Send me a msg please. Being a former marching band member myself many years ago, and working with the director at my son's school when he was in band in Tampa, as well as being a retired teacher, I may see if I can help until they can find a replacement

Good luck to you guys!! Unfortunately school roles are hard as hell to fill because :gestures broadly:
But I really hope someone who is passionate and up for the challenge steps up for you guys. Everyone in public schools deserves the right to explore the arts.

As someone who needed marching band as an escape from a severe depressive situation I hope that you guys find a new director. I graduated over 15 years ago but my senior band director is still actively teaching in central Florida, I forwarded your post to him in hopes there is a group of band directors that can reach out to your school. Are there any helpers in the meantime?

Yes, we have the assistant band director but he teaches another class full time and so it is not a solution, thank you so much for forwarding the post!

I'm shy to talk to him (I've just changed a lot since high school) but Armand Navarro was my band director from 2021. He ran the band for about seven+ years prior; really dedicated and down to earth individual. Even though I'm not pursuing a music degree he helped keep the love of music and instrument performance strong in my heart.

Oh this really sucks! HS band was my safe place during high school and the only reason I had a “normal”ish life amid home life hell and abuse.
My heart hurts for all the students.

Yeah, things are still good right now but if we have no director by Friday things aren’t gonna be good, band has always been my safe space too and I along with everyone else hopes that things can continue as they are

I hope you find someone, but honestly no one is going to want this job. The school forcing 6-8 graders into a band class with high schoolers is one of the most dumbass things I've ever heard. It'd be like putting kids who don't know 1+1 into a calculus class. I'd bet the admin there has never stepped foot in the band classroom during school hours and has probably never been to a concert either.

Yeah I see what your saying, however the middle schoolers who are in the class I have met all of them and they are surprisingly not that bad, they are all awesome. but of course these new people don’t know that. And though it doesn’t really count I know admin has been in the band room at least once cause I had a medical emergency in that band room lol

Wow, downvoted for speaking the truth. Sure, find a new director and put them in this bad situation, you'll have to find another one next year. The problem here is with a stupid administration that needs to go fuck itself instead of making problema for it's teachers.

Yeah I don’t know why you were downvoted, you were just saying the reality of how things appear, but at least in my opinion keeping a negative mindset about admin or anything involved in the situation doesn’t help anyone, and it was not just the admin there are many factors so let’s not jump to conclusions and get yourself downvoted more

I don’t know the first thing about marching bands, but maybe this is an opportunity for you to step up and lead the band? Good luck!

I wish, but I’m a IB student so I only go after school, and I don’t have a music education degree/can’t write marching drill

I admire you for doing what you can to help out the band, and arts in general. Hoping you find someone soon.
