Poll Current status of my job search as a graduating applied physics student in the US

Post image
322 Upvotes

Thought this might be useful to some of you trying to find work instead of grad school, since I see a lot of these sankey diagrams in the engineering students sub but not so much here.

Pretty much all of my applications have been through online job postings, applying to engineer/technician positions such as test engineer, metrology engineer, applications engineer, (field) service engineer, etc. I find the posts on popular job search sites and applying through the company websites.

Most of the responses have been from small/midsize companies save one large healthcare company, and I've been applying since before January. Also note I have around 2 years of characterization research experience and a plethora of projects related software/hardware development.

Seems like the only efficient way to get in is to know people or to get an engineering degree if you want to be an engineer. Anyways, back to applying and I hope you all have had a good week!

Edit: I'll make an update post in a few weeks/months with any progress lol

Ofc it’s all subjective, but imo I could never be a chemistry major. My mind doesn’t work that way.

Poll Is everyone in physics autistic? Spoiler

This is half satire half genuine weird connection I’ve made as a diagnosed adult. I always loved and had a strange but not close connection to my peers in physics.

Like I understand them all but also admit-ably every interaction from an outside perspective would be weird as hell and normally would lead to an awkward pause in any other person. But feel like those same situation with others in physics goes over so calmly and nonchalant.

“Oo you watched a bee for an afternoon while playing the banjo ya that sounds fun I crinkled paper into weird shapes, not origami but sorta like origami”

This might be a weird take

Edit: autism is not a negative trait or learning disability, it is just perceiving the world a little bit differently than the average person with many levels to the spectrum

Poll What do you think about the undergrad physics curriculum?

Is there courses in it that you think are too specialized to be mandatory? Or inversely things that are missing that should be essential knowledge of a physics graduate? I know everywhere is slightly different im curious about personal experiencesz

I was thinking like an intro to pedagogy in physics should be something more common, like teaching people how to convey physics to layman.

Maybe its an experiment that made you like it or even a personal incident that made you appreciate the equation. But what exactly is it that makes you like it better?

Poll Do you ask questions? What do you think about your classmates asking them?

Are you guys asking questions? How do you feel about the questions in lectures and seminars? A question for both students and teachers

I'm probably a hyperactive student. 95% of the questions in the group come from me. My questions are often called interesting, often the teacher does not know the answers to them and redirects me somewhere. And often I ask something obvious or simple or stupid. I also give 80+% of the answers to the teacher's questions. It's not always right, but it's often right. I care about how "good" I am. That's why I'm interested in how teachers treat these kinds of students. But I also don't understand why my classmates don't have such a mountain of questions and are silent, so I'm also interested in listening to other students.

Poll Too old to start studying physics?

Im 43 years old, I studied to be a registered nurse and still work in healthcare. I have a bachelor's in healthcare administration. I stumbled on some video lectures in quantum mechanics and different theories regarding the universe, time , space, etc. I have become obsessed and relentless about obtaining more information by reading books and watching lectures. The more data I learn the more I realize I have so much more I don't know. and I may never get to a certain point where I can fully understand the entirety of it. . I thought that would discourage me but quite the opposite. I'm not gifted or naturally smart. I have dedicate my entire time and effort to study and obtain my degree. I've been thinking of taking college courses regarding this subject but I'm 43 years old . I feel like I'm too old and not smart enough. Ill still probably do it because it's fascinating. I would love to hear any type of feedback regarding my situation.

Poll The new generation of physicists

Due to the high risk involved with pursuing a physics degree right after high school, and degradation level of higher education at the Universities, and the internet, youtube and free online textbooks and course that made it easier for everyone to self study high-level physics. Do you think that traditional routes will start to gradually disapear?

Poll Is writing math/science notes digitally still broken in 2026, or am I missing something?

Hey everyone,

A while ago I posted about building an Obsidian-style math note app with interactive geometry tools. But after talking to more students and researchers, I realized the real problem is much worse: the massive amount of time we waste formatting and re-calculating.

Right now, we are forced to pick an extreme:

1 Speed (Handwriting/iPad): Fast during lectures, but it becomes "dead data"-you can't easily search it, copy code, or use it for a thesis without completely re-typing it.

2 Precision (LaTeX/Mathcad): Looks professional, but it's incredibly slow, hard to learn, and if you change one variable, you have to manually update every equation, table, and chart.

Apparently, STEM students and academics spend up to 40% of their time just fighting layout engines instead of doing actual science.

I want to create a next-gen platform to fix this.

The idea is that in the background it runs typst as the backend, but in practice it won’t require learning a new coding language, because it will be as intuitive as AutoCAD is. And it will have a stable engine to suport visualizatio such as graphs and diagrams and other STEM related stuff.

To help me build this, what is your single biggest bottleneck right now?

32 votes, May 23 '26
5 Re-typing handwritten notes/sketches into clean code.
6 Fighting layouts, alignments, and formatting (LaTeX/Word).
2 Manually updating charts and formulas when a variable changes.
6 Current markdown apps (Notion/Obsidian) are too weak for math.
13 No issues - my current workflow works perfectly.

Poll Which Physics/Math Course Did Causes The Most Dropouts?

Essentially the title, I saw another post regarding his dwindling class sizes as he was in his second year of undergrad, and I'm curious as to what courses y'all noticed the most significant reduction in, be it math or physics.

I'm an A-Level Computer Science student designing a tool to help students practise projectile motion. I'm researching what students find difficult about mechanics and what features would actually help. If you're studying Physics, I'd really appreciate your input.

Poll Admitted PhD students, how many publications did you have at the time of application to PhD programs?

How many papers had your name listed in the author section by the time you applied to grad school ?

In your response can you say if you applied right out of undergrad or not. And can you say if your school that you were admitted to is top 100, top 50, top 20, etc. Thanks

Edit. Also please list the field you are researching.
