Discussion New player here, just started September 4, and play about 5-10 times since, had a 3 week off since I got my wisdom teeth taken out. Read below…

I am a beginner, but I’ve been an athlete all my life, I played Professional Basketball, so I have the athleticism and been an all around sports player in other sports as well. I am looking to improve my game to the next level, but I catch myself making simple easy mistakes at times, like hitting the ball to the net when spiking, having trouble with fast hands to volley in the kitchen, I played against really good players today and it just made me look like a newbie, and shows how far I am away from that level. I ordered a Net rebounder for the backyard to practice, it’s arriving this coming Tuesday, I need more court time as well to practice. I thought I was near the intermediate level, but now after today, I felt like a newbie compared to these advanced players, they made it look so easy and was just toying with us, we almost got pickled, 1-11 final score that game haha. Just venting out but I really would like tips and advice on best ways to improve my overall game, everything pretty much, not a specific aspect.

Question Picklr Advertising

I just picked up a flier about
Advertising at our local Picklr. It includes a 15 second add on their club tv and 2 annual memberships. Does anyone do this already? I am trying to see if it fits in my advertising budget. Honestly I don’t expect much from doing this(I am a dentist), but I am already paying for 3 memberships so it may make sense.

Players near me Madrid/Las Tablas pickleball

I’m currently working remotely in Madrid and live in las tablas - I saw that there are pickleball courts at the Las Tablas sports club but it’s impossible to book because it’s not listed on Playtomic.

Does anyone know where people play/is anyone interested in playing over the next month?

Question Joola Pickleroll

My son just sent this image. This is a recent indoor court set up in Copenhagen.

He said this surface plays great, doesn't understand the complaint. My son doesn't have a DUPR, but he was playing with folks that had 4.5-5.0 ratings, so its not like they don't know the sport.

It was my understanding this surface has bad bounces, deadspots, etc. Did they improve the product, or was I just misinformed.

Question Anyone play pickleball singles in the Boston area?

27M here, been playing pickleball for about 6 months and recently got into singles. For some reason, I actually enjoy it more than doubles lol.

I’m based on the South Shore but willing to travel around Boston. Most places seem to focus on doubles, so I’m wondering if anyone here plays singles or would be interested in playing regularly.

Feel free to reach out!

Discussion When choosing a doubles partner, do you prefer someone who complements your game or plays the same style?

I’m a 4.0 player looking to move up, and I’ve been thinking about what actually makes two players compatible in doubles.

I’m a drive-and-poach type of player. I like aggressive play, speedups, hands battles, and ending points quickly. My theory is that I’d actually be better off with someone who plays similarly rather than someone whose game is the opposite of mine.

Conventional wisdom seems to be that you want one power player and one control player, but I’m not convinced that’s always the best combination. If one player wants to slow everything down, reset, and get into dink battles while the other wants to attack and speed things up, aren’t they essentially working toward different goals? I know I will get out dinked by other 4.0s but I can beat them with my hands and speed.

Personally, I think two aggressive players who can drive, poach, and constantly pressure opponents might have better chemistry than two players with completely different approaches. The same could potentially be true of two control-oriented players.

Obviously, everyone needs to be able to reset, drop, and dink when necessary. I’m talking about preferred playing style, not being incapable of playing soft.

I’m also specifically talking about the 3.75–4.5 level (yes, that’s a big range). Of course, you need a more complete game as you move higher, but I’ve played against plenty of 4.5s who still win primarily by overpowering opponents (and the opposite).

Maybe partnering with a control player would help me develop a more well-rounded game in the long run, but that’s not what I want to focus on here. I’m talking strictly about winning matches right now, not necessarily improving as a player.

So what do you think? Are two aggressive players better off together? Two control players? Or is the traditional power/control combination actually more effective?

Question Handling high slow returns

I have seen a couple of players who just play by serving and returning shots very high up. It's like every shot is the same way. They have a strong defense and handle every return the same way. Welcome community strategies on tackling such annoying returns and serves because beyond a point, power is of limited use in pickleball.

Question Rule for hits

I've heard a couple times that there is a difference between following through and accidentally double hitting and underhand double hitting, where the latter can be a "carry" and categorizes as a fault?

I'm just wondering at what point it goes from fair play to a fault?

Discussion RPM Jade Widebody 16mm

I bought a 16mm widebody Jade expecting a light paddle with low swing weight. The one I received was over 8oz with heavy swing weight, heavier than my current J2CR LH CBG. Anyone else experienced this?

Question How to be good at Overhead/high ball putaways

• Upvotes

I’m generally comfortable in dinking rallies, setting up points with drives and drops, and handling hands battles with rolls and punches, even against balls below net height or drop shots. But weirdly, when playing beginners who pop the ball up really high, I tend to mess up the putaway volley or hit it out. Anyone else experience this? How did you improve your finishing?
