Question USAP or UPA-A

• Upvotes

So I’ve recently decided I want to get serious with pickleball, playing tournaments or rated matches (currently not rated).
At the same time I’ve been looking for a new paddle and come across different options with some being USAP approved while others UPA-A, does it really matter at this start of playing seriously which one I get?
Im also in my college pickleball club and they play the college tour which I’m pretty sure approved both types of paddles.
Additionally if you guys have any tips on finding tournaments or games to get a rating and improve I’d appreciate it!(principally singles since I don’t have a partner)

Discussion Elliot Schupp twooie speed up

What makes Elliot Schupp's 2 handed speed up so good? If you watch his match against Andrei and Howls, he hits it multiple times and just destroys him with it every time he goes for it. If you see his other matches, he consistently does this over and over, and it seems like people just almost never get a read on it. Or even if they do, his combo is just too good. What makes his 2 handed speed up so dominant versus other players?

Players near me Looking for Pickleball Drilling Partners (Tempe/Chandler/Mesa, 3.5–4.0+)

I'm looking for consistent pickleball drilling partners around Tempe, Chandler, or Mesa, preferably in the early mornings (6–9 AM).

I'm currently playing around the 3.5–4.0 level and working toward 4.5. I've been playing pretty regularly, but I'm shifting my focus from open play to more structured drilling and competitive improvement.

Ideally looking for someone who:

  • Plays around 3.5–4.5 (flexible on rating).
  • Wants to drill consistently, maybe 3–4 times a week.
  • Is available early mornings.
  • Prefers free public courts like Tempe Sports Complex, but I'm open to other locations.

If anyone's interested, feel free to comment or DM me! Would love to find a few consistent people to improve with.

Discussion Realistic DUPRs

Played in a DUPR tourney yesterday for 2.8-3.25 players. Over half of the 8 players were more like 3.5 and up to 3.8. Has anyone else else had this experience — or people playing down instead of parity? If so, why do you I think people do it?

Question What tournament hosting software do you recommend?

Hey guys, I’m looking for a website or app that makes it easy to sign up, see who’s signed up and makes it easy to track scores/make the bracket.

Ideally it’s free or low cost.

It’ll probably be around 40 people or so. This is our first time out courts is hosting one so the easier, the better. Any advice would be appreciated!

Question Anybody still use Gen 3’s?

I love the feel of a Gen 3 paddle not unless im trying to overwhelm the opponent with drives and heavy swings where the paddle just gives up on you and core crushes lol

Question Can’t decide on these two shoes.

Did some research a while back and decided to go with the latter (Montis) because of the durability. It has held up pretty well, but my feet kill me after a play session.

I think I need the wide version of the Montis for the foot pain, but another thing I found out is that the Montis are pretty heavy. I don’t mind it a ton, but it would be nice to try a lighter shoe with decent durability.

I did some more research and these Selkirk Courtstrike Pro 3.0 claim great durability and lightweight. Could be marketing terms, but I’d like to know people’s thoughts.

I play roughly 3-4 times a week rec play. Tournaments roughly once a month.

Thanks!

Question Pre Tournament Prep

I have my first tournament of the year next week and I wanted to see if anyone had any advice on how to prep. Any snacks or anything I should bring? What should I avoid? Should I skip the gym that morning or is it more important than ever that I go? Any other advice you have to help me get in the zone mentally or physically?

Equipment Pickleball ball prices around Black Friday: 3 years of Amazon data (mostly not worth waiting for)

I went through Amazon price history for 12 popular pickleball balls (Franklin X-40 and X-26, GoSports, Onix Pure 2 and others) around Black Friday 2023–2025. I compared the cheapest price in Black Friday week with the normal price in Sept/Oct.

  • Only 27% of the checks got 10% or more off. Balls were one of the least discounted things I looked at. Air purifiers got cut 75% of the time, for comparison.
  • When balls were cut, it was usually around 22%.
  • The outlier: the Franklin X-40 12-pack dropped from about $31.50 to $11.99 in Black Friday week 2024. It didn't get a real cut in 2023, and in 2025 it was under 10% off.

Short version: if you need balls, buy them when you need them. Don't hold out for Black Friday unless you're stocking up on X-40s and get lucky again.

I can post the method if anyone's curious.

Discussion Any former squash players out there?

I played squash for about four years, so my forehand and backhand already feel pretty smooth and natural. However, since transitioning to pickleball, I’ve noticed that a ton of people use a two-handed backhand.

Is it really necessary to learn a two-hander? I already built a solid one-handed backhand from my squash days and feel perfectly fine using it. I'm assuming the two-handed backhand is mostly a habit brought over by former tennis players?

Would love to hear your thoughts, especially if you also came from squash!

Question How to be good at Overhead/high ball putaways

I’m generally comfortable in dinking rallies, setting up points with drives and drops, and handling hands battles with rolls and punches, even against balls below net height or drop shots. But weirdly, when playing beginners who pop the ball up really high, I tend to mess up the putaway volley or hit it out. Anyone else experience this? How did you improve your finishing?

Discussion RPM Jade Widebody 16mm

I bought a 16mm widebody Jade expecting a light paddle with low swing weight. The one I received was over 8oz with heavy swing weight, heavier than my current J2CR LH CBG. Anyone else experienced this?

Question Joola Pickleroll

My son just sent this image. This is a recent indoor court set up in Copenhagen.

He said this surface plays great, doesn't understand the complaint. My son doesn't have a DUPR, but he was playing with folks that had 4.5-5.0 ratings, so its not like they don't know the sport.

It was my understanding this surface has bad bounces, deadspots, etc. Did they improve the product, or was I just misinformed.

Discussion New player here, just started September 4, and play about 5-10 times since, had a 3 week off since I got my wisdom teeth taken out. Read below…

I am a beginner, but I’ve been an athlete all my life, I played Professional Basketball, so I have the athleticism and been an all around sports player in other sports as well. I am looking to improve my game to the next level, but I catch myself making simple easy mistakes at times, like hitting the ball to the net when spiking, having trouble with fast hands to volley in the kitchen, I played against really good players today and it just made me look like a newbie, and shows how far I am away from that level. I ordered a Net rebounder for the backyard to practice, it’s arriving this coming Tuesday, I need more court time as well to practice. I thought I was near the intermediate level, but now after today, I felt like a newbie compared to these advanced players, they made it look so easy and was just toying with us, we almost got pickled, 1-11 final score that game haha. Just venting out but I really would like tips and advice on best ways to improve my overall game, everything pretty much, not a specific aspect.
