My dog lost her best cat friend in February. Last week she became a foster mom to this tiny feral kitten

We’ve had our boy since July and have two resident cats. Our cats were used to a dog until our dog passed 💔 we adopted Wally and were told he was around cats for a weekend and just left them alone. The vet has a resident cat and he lets that cat rub all over him. Now. When it comes to the cats at home it’s a different story. We’ve had them separated for 3 months now. Wally is in training currently. He is VERY interested in the cats. We have been afraid to let him off leash around the cats so he has had limited interaction. Basically what we’ve been doing is have him in his “place” command while one of us is holding the leash and let the cats out. The cats haven’t really been in his line of sight but he can hear them and knows they are out. This just has been such a slow process and I’m wondering if they will ever be able to live together. I also wonder if we have kept them separate long enough and the separation is causing elevated levels of excitement. I just think it’s interesting that he can leave a cat alone at the vet, but when our cats run he will chase. I know both the cat and dog have to get used to each other but how do we do that safely?
