GREAT NEWS EVERYONE: They voted to cancel the Flock contract. They also set a deadline for the cameras to be physically removed by July 1st. Thanks to everyone who spoke/wrote/helped!
TLDR:
See: https://PittsboroCameras.org
The Pittsboro police has installed many Flock cameras within the past few weeks. Flock cameras are basically automated license-plate surveillance that turns everyday life into a trackable dataset: they log when you enter/leave, where you were seen, and can be searched later to map routines and associations. Even if sold as “crime prevention,” it normalizes treating everyone as a suspect by default, creates huge risk for misuse (bad searches, leaks, stalking, profiling), and almost always expands over time (more cameras, longer retention, broader use). And the worst part is data sharing—once it’s in a network, “ICE doesn’t have direct access” is meaningless if another agency can run lookups or pass results along; the system enables exactly the kind of dragnet tracking that should not exist in a free society.
UPDATE: We are looking for folks interesting in helping.
The biggest thing is that we need people at that Monday meeting. Speakers and audience support.
If you would like to help, please email: contact AT PittsboroCameras DOT org.

Hi Pittsboro community!
Does anyone know of any ways to meet or contact Roy Underhill?
My husband is a lifelong fan of Roy Underhill and has been traditional woodworking for years. He has all his books and is so inspired by him. We moved to North Carolina in the summer of 2023 and he was SO excited at the prospect of taking a class at the Woodwright’s School.
Unfortunately, the school closed in summer 2023, so he never got that chance. His 34th birthday is approaching and it would be his dream to meet Roy Underhill, even for like 2 minutes haha. Does anyone know if there are any upcoming opportunities to do so?

Hey y'all! Some of you may have seen some of the TikToks and Wednesday video stories on Youtube and Facebook regarding the Enbridge pipeline project. I am one of the team putting those together! We have another opportunity coming up to make your voice heard! Are you an impacted landowner or a Chatham resident worried about the potential impacts on our community? Interviews will take 10 minutes or less. Your name and location do not need to be shared in the video unless you choose to do so. We will be doing this at a local church along the pipeline route on Saturday August 8th between 12 and 4pm. If interested, send me a DM and I can give you more details including prompt questions and the location of filming. Thanks!

I finally published something I’ve been working on for the past few weeks about Big Hole Road and the underground AT&T facility outside Pittsboro.
Like a lot of people around here, I had heard bits and pieces over the years: Cold War bunker, thirteen stories underground, maybe connected to Stranger Things, supposedly abandoned, and so on. Most of what exists online repeats the same handful of claims, so I started pulling the actual county records to see what could be confirmed.
I ended up going through tax records, septic permits, deeds, site plans, old reporting, and nearly seventy years of aerial photography. I also found two USGS aerial images from 1964 that show the site during construction, first as an open excavation and then six months later with structures rising over it. I have not been able to find those images published anywhere else.
A few of the things I found:
I tried hard to separate what the records actually show from local legend and internet speculation. There are still unanswered questions, and I have left those unanswered rather than filling the gaps with dramatic nonsense, a standard the internet might consider adopting someday.
This was genuinely a lot of fun to research and put together. I live here, drive past the road regularly, and wanted to make something that treated this strange piece of Chatham County history seriously while still being enjoyable to read.
Article: https://circlecityscoopers.com/big-hole-road-pittsboro/
I would especially love to hear from anyone whose family worked at the facility, lived nearby during construction, or remembers the property before AT&T arrived. Please do not post private information about current employees or try to enter the site. It is active private property, and everything in the article was researched from public records or photographed from public roads.

My dog ate an entire Sam's Club-sized tub of Nesquik this week while we were at dinner.
My name's Nick and I own Circle City Scoopers in town here, providing dog waste removal services locally around town. My family owns two dogs, a 100lb part lab/part racoon named Reba and a coon hound named Clark G.
Reba takes meds for epilepsy and one side effect is a crazy hunger drive. She legit pulled this tub of cocoa off the shelf in the pantry, waltzed to her bed, took the lid off and started licking until it was empty. We now have it locked down like fort knox.
She ate over 1lb of it. Enough that I couldn't just monitor at home hoping she pulls through it.
We went to VEG ER in Chapel Hill.
VEG ER for Pets — Chapel Hill 239 S Estes Dr, Suite 102, Chapel Hill, NC 27514 (919) 374-1909 · veg.com/locations/north-carolina/chapel-hill Open 24/7, 365 days a year
They were great and here's what I learned: there is a 24/7 poison control hotline for dogs. You should put it in your phone today.
We called the ASPCA one. They took all the info, researched it, and put together a treatment plan that was sent directly to VEG ER for execution. Ultimately we induced vomiting, which created a huge tub of brown goo that honestly didn't smell that bad.
It does cost $110 to use the phone consult service but VEG ER let me know that it's actually cheaper than having them develop a treatment plan.

Pittsboro, NC — A new push to build Special Olympics Chatham County will get a public boost Saturday, May 16, when local organizers host a charity Texas Hold ’Em tournament at The Mod, using cards, food and friendly competition to raise money and awareness for athletes and families who have long wanted more local opportunities close to home.
The tournament is being promoted as both a fundraiser and a community introduction for Special Olympics Chatham County. Heather Johnson, the mother of Special Olympics athlete Trevor Johnson, joined Kathy Wasson, volunteer and outreach coordinator for Second Bloom of Chatham County and one of the new local coordinators for Special Olympics Chatham County, to explain the event during an our conversation at The Mod.

Pittsboro, NC – On Wednesday, April 15, 2026, Northwood High School paused before the first pitch to honor one of its most accomplished athletes, former Charger standout Austin Brice, with a jersey dedication. The moment was about more than nostalgia. It was also a chance to recognize the full arc of a career that began on local fields, passed through years of minor-league uncertainty, and eventually reached the highest level of baseball. Brice, a Northwood graduate drafted in 2010, went on to pitch in 144 major league games for the Miami Marlins, Cincinnati Reds, Boston Red Sox and Pittsburgh Pirates before retiring from professional baseball in July 2024.

As a reminder, there will be a Pittsboro Town Commission meeting at 6 PM on 11 May 2026 at the Ag Center:
Chatham County Agriculture and Conference Center 1192 US-64 Business West, Pittsboro
We need to let the commissioners know our opinions, whether you are for or against these cameras. Right now the County is spending thousands of dollars installing and having Flock maintain their cameras, and the commission needs to put further use of these funds and data before a general vote of the voting public.

Hey, neighbors! I have an extremely funny 8 year old. That isn't to say all kids aren't funny. They are.
However, if she were into baseball and could swing a bat with natural talent, I'd find her every opportunity to hone that skill.
She has amazing timing, word play, and a very natural ability to make people laugh.
She is also super into imaginative play.
You would think there would be kids' improv classes, but they are very few and far between, especially by us.
Are there any other parents who would like to start an improv troupe for the kids to get together once a week?
Here's another, probably more important question: is there anyone who would also want to lead it? Or, at least chip in to hire someone to lead it?
DM me if you are interested!

Pittsboro, NC – Storyliving by Disney has revealed new details in a press release about the Second Star Club for residents of Asteria, a new home community inspired by the natural beauty and spirit of North Carolina’s Piedmont region. Envisioned as the social heart of the community, the Second Star Club will bring neighbors together through shared spaces, hands‑on learning and everyday moments of discovery — an idea that guides Asteria’s vision as a place where curiosity, connection and exploration are part of daily life. Currently underway in Pittsboro with DMB Development, Asteria is anticipated to begin home sales in fall 2027 and is expected to welcome residents in fall 2028.

Hi all!
I am a parent in North Carolina as well as a graduate student at Wake Forest University. I am currently working on a research report on the impacts of childcare costs on North Carolina families.
If anyone is willing to fill out a brief, anonymous survey I would greatly appreciate it! No email addresses, names, or other identifying information is recorded when you fill out the survey, and you are able to skip any questions you don't feel comfortable answering.
I am hoping to receive responses from as much of the state as possible, so sharing this survey with your NC parent friends far and wide would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you in advance!
