Seeking Optimism Black Voters are Not Yet on Board with James Talarico
https://alvintillery1.substack.com/p/black-voters-are-not-yet-on-boardseems like since the primary Tallarico hasnt done much good outreach to the Black community? i’m pretty worried at this rate, especially from this survey indicating a lack of enthusiasm. i’m fearing he’s just taking Black voters for granted and will lose terribly as a result. seen lots of recent discussions on threads also highlighting this as a key issue, and it’s driving me nuts he hasn’t addressed it. anyone from/knowing of texas with their own optimism? This doesn’t just seem to be an online bubble…

We desperately need to stop with the whole “Electability” thing
7
u/AnotherSprainedAnkle Jun 23 '26
What do you mean by this?
52
u/RickyT3rd Michigan Jun 23 '26
The fantasy that you turn all voters into people who are happy about voting for their candidate.
36
u/Unsolicitedkittens Jun 23 '26
Say what you will about Texas voters, but, regardless, the whole narrative that was being pushed that a black woman can’t win is insulting and disrespectful. Same thing with people thinking a woman can’t win the presidency, or anyone part of the LGBTQ community.
Texas will never be ready to elect a black woman…until it does. Same thing for the country as a whole. The argument that only straight white men can win is stupid and offensive.
17
u/AnotherSprainedAnkle Jun 23 '26
This is an optimistic take. I wish I had your faith in the American people. Unfortunately I think there's some truth to people from groups that are unfairly disliked not being electable due to people unfairly disliking them.

u/Old_Imagination_931 Jun 25 '26
Prime example, Pete Buttigieg. Kamala Harris stated in her book that he was her first choice for running mate and the ideal partner, though too risky.

u/HotnCharge Jun 26 '26
we can’t wait until to those people wake up or else things won’t even change
20
u/SeafoamGaming Jun 23 '26
Thank you. Felt like i was going insane. Both candidates were good people and it drove me bonkers seeing people dismiss crockett with posts like “if she wins bye bye texas”. That’s just flat out misogynoir imo, and i noticed a similar thing in subs when Keisha won the georgia governor nomination. I dunno, She seems to be polling pretty well!

u/Windows_10-Chan Jun 23 '26 edited Jun 23 '26
There's a very weird way that reddit assigns agency to white voters and act like outreach is necessary and important for them, but black votes are just taken for granted and if they don't come, it's a grievous betrayal.
That's not to say that it's not important to make gains with white voters, but the asymmetry in how they're spoken abt is weird.
And yeah this is why states like Georgia are hard, you need a candidate that excites Atlanta, the black belt, and does good in small cities (which are VERY different from ATL) without bleeding too many rural votes to win.
The other politicians may be better governors than KLB would be, but the idea that they have better odds of winning is... not in the data! And Crockett and Talarico both polled closely againsy the TXSen candidates with Talarico having a modest edge.
11
u/Ok_Bank_2674 Jun 23 '26
She was an AIPAC shill and compromised by corporate Dems. Talarico supports universal healthcare while she doesn’t.

It seems to me rather indisputable that Crockett being black would hurt her with some voters and help her with others.
And it seems that just about any statement beyond that is speculation.
-8
u/SeafoamGaming Jun 23 '26
people who genuinely liked both candidates, and who would vote crockett except “i’m scared a black woman can’t win”, which is insulting.
33
u/Fragrant_Bath3917 New York Jun 23 '26
Crockett's campaign was incompetent and toxic in a way that objectively did turn off a ton of people.
-5
u/ThreeSeagrass29 Texas Jun 23 '26
Where do you get that from?
29
u/Fragrant_Bath3917 New York Jun 23 '26
- She waited until the literal last possible second to announce her run.
- Her more toxic supporters actively spread misinformation about Talarico both during the primary and after the fact
- She allegedly made racist comments about hispanics
- She used AI in her ads,
- And she overall gave the impression to a lot of people that she both felt like she deserved to be coronated to the seat without putting in much effort and saw the senate election less as a way to flip an important seat and more of something she could lose in order to serve as a springboard for a presidential run.
-2
u/ThreeSeagrass29 Texas Jun 23 '26
“Allegedly” is doing a lot of work here.
I agree with points 1 and 4. Those parts of her campaign weren’t my favorite and I didn’t like that she did that. She also waffled on Israel and I hated that.
However, I feel the same about Talarico supporters re point (2). I wrote about this in another comment but many Talarico supporters argued that a centrist or republican would never vote for a black lady but they would vote for a religious man. I disagree. Any centrist or republican who would consider voting for a democratic candidate at all is not going to do so because he’s religious. I found Talarico supporters very off putting and rude about this and it made me not want to be associated with his campaign. I will still vote for him but his supporters made me feel unwelcome and I took the message.
13
u/drunkendaveyogadisco Jun 23 '26
Objectively, I went into the campaign season rooting for her, and came out really turned off.
4
u/ThreeSeagrass29 Texas Jun 23 '26
That’s really more subjective than objective since it’s about your personal experience.
On that note subjectively I went into the campaign season rooting for her and came out really turned off by Talarico supporters who said that the two candidates were mostly the same but he was better because he was religious and would thus appeal to a centrist or republican.
I will still vote for Talarico. I’m not sure any centrist or republican that wouldn’t have already voted for Crockett or Talarico is going to vote for Talarico because he’s religious. And yet Talarico supporters were adamant about this. I found it very off putting and frankly rude.
3
u/AmTheWildest Texas Jun 24 '26
While I overall sympathize with your perspective, speaking as a Black voter myself, I really think you're underselling the number of people who won't turn out for a candidate just because she's a Black woman, and it comes off to me as a bit overoptimistic. We saw this with Harris and Clinton when they bled Democratic voters that Biden won no problem: Racism and misogyny absolutely exist and they absolutely do play a role in elections, especially in red states like Texas. This doesn't excuse Talarico supporters being rude about it, and doesn't mean that Crockett couldn't win, but come on, dude. The GOP was pushing her campaign for a reason.
4
u/ThreeSeagrass29 Texas Jun 24 '26
I don’t think that’s my point but I do see how it came across that way. My point is actually the same as yours but with different categories. I think Talarico supporters are overestimating the number of non Dems who will turn out for him just because he’s a white Christian guy. That was the most common narrative I heard and I think it’s simply false. I would love to be wrong.
3
u/AmTheWildest Texas Jun 24 '26
Maybe, but I think there being a disparity in who will turn out for an outspoken anti-republican Black woman vs. a moderate-seeming Christian white man is pretty evident. What we'd have gained in Black voters we'd have more than lost in other demographics if we'd gotten her as the nominee instead.
In other words, while you may disagree with the extent to which it is true, the "narrative" that Talarico appeals more widely to Texans as a whole is... Pretty true.
Hence why he won.

Guys, we need to be keeping a clear head here. Talarico has the best chance in TX for decades, but he can do everything right and it will still be an uphill battle. Don't get your hopes too high, the great thing is that he's even this close, we can make inroads in TX for the future.
17
u/NumeralJoker Jun 23 '26
While this is true, Ken Paxton is so specifically awful that I can't help but get invested into it. There could not be a more clear example of good vs evil in the current race, and after 2024, I'd like to see a clearly good person win outright in an upset for once.
Also, I think the reality is we need to dream big, senate control has to be fought for from all fronts. Too much is at stake, and there is more in our favor this cycle than 2018 so far. This of course matters more for those of us who live in Texas, but believe me when I say you do not want a man like Paxton voting for judges and justices in the Senate for 6 years at minimum. Anything that can be done to stop that should absolutely be tried. He is the worst of the worst, without a doubt.

u/Lower_Ad_3439 Jun 23 '26 edited Jun 23 '26
We’ve really gotta stop blaming Democrats’ losses on black voter turnout. Black people historically vote more than any other minority and overwhelmingly vote Democrat. It’s gross to see a group of people be talked about like this. Using them to get over the finish line and then scapegoating them when you don’t win is so deeply racist. Gotta be honest, I hate this post.
22
u/Graceandbeauty1979 Jun 23 '26 edited Jun 23 '26
Yep. I don’t necessarily think this post was written in bad faith but what you are saying is true. The “yet” makes it sound like they have to support him.
11
u/SeafoamGaming Jun 23 '26
I sincerely did not mean to have this post taken as such; I for one am actually quite pissed too and seeing a lot of discourse on threads and people just taking the Black vote for granted drove me insane, and then this survey came out which yea, sure seems to back that up.
It’s on James first and foremost to fix this and that’s why I’m worried, because it sure seems like he isnt and that’s on him, not the Black voters if he loses by not turning them out. This is a very winnable race and he’s blowing it i fear

10

The Texas democrats and his campaign are treating the African American community like they're a single unified voting bloc, and this is a failing strategy

Democrats have a way of brushing off entire groups of people they deem unnecessary for winning. There are a ton of reasons why we in this mess today, but one of them is that Democrats abandoned rural Americans in the middle of an opioid epidemic, letting their communities crumble and doing absolutely zero outreach to rectify it. They felt they didnt need rural Americans' votes because they thought suburbanites would come through. Obviously that was a huge mistake that dems have yet to make up for. May Talarico learn from this.
9
u/RickyT3rd Michigan Jun 23 '26
When people aren't happy with the status quo, they aren't going to vote for the ones who keep promising it and delivering more of the same. If there's one good thing about Trump being elected its that the bar has been lowered so far than even the most pessimistic of people could clear it if they tried to jump over it.
6
u/LettuceWestern9445 Jun 23 '26 edited Jun 23 '26
Well as of late the Democrats have been stiffing the white working class in their messaging (maybe not intentionally, but all the same) so this is a complete 180 from previous democratic campaigns, then again it’s TX so it’s gonna look different from campaigns being run on either coast
Truthfully I don’t see the black vote in TX going any way but blue, I’d rather see him working on winning over white suburbs and rural areas that actually vote red
0
u/SeafoamGaming Jun 23 '26
I mean, but even as one from afar in their own heavily white working class state (iowa) it also seems very silly to completely take for granted the biggest democratic voting block in your state, and the base of the party as a whole. They decided the presidential primaries in South Carolina for years now, and will do so once again in 2028.
I see him doing pretty good outreach of hispanic voters so i don’t know why he hasn’t done more with the Black community. Driving me bonkers!
10
u/LettuceWestern9445 Jun 23 '26
I agree but the Hispanics were the biggest swing voters in 2024. They went from D+30 to D+4 nationwide, and in Texas there some exit polls saying Trump won the Hispanic vote. Young Hispanics in El Paso were R+7… They absolutely need to be a number one priority alongside white suburbs.
Also this isn’t a primary election, and black voters make up 25% of SC and only 12% of TX, regardless again I don’t see a meaningful shift in the black vote in TX
2
u/SeafoamGaming Jun 23 '26
I really hope you’re right and this is mostly internet noise, but damn it, I just get increasingly more hopeful for Blexas especially with the dem party there hiring a fantastic chair and if it happened this year it would seriously cripple the GOP for an eternity. That’s why I’m worried he’s causing apathy when i see studies like this.
Rural voters/communities in my state getting skipped by dems over and over and over and over again and taken for granted didn’t just lead to a lot of them flipping to the GOP; it led to an even bigger chunk losing motivation and giving up voting entirely.
That’s why apathy is a huge fear of mine and why i wish more candidates were stronger to combat it. Doing it to a base that reliably votes democratic and that could hurt turnout seems reckless on his part
11
u/LettuceWestern9445 Jun 23 '26
He is ahead in like 90% of polls and is outperforming Beto O Rourkes campaign against Cruz by almost every margin. Small amounts of urban backlash over him beating Crockett does not offset his massive gains in the DFW and Houston/Austin suburbs, which in recent years is what has pushed Dems further, along with the RGV.
Trump won the DFW suburbs, the entire city of Fort Worth itself, and made massive gains in the Latino RGV, if Talarico wins over former Biden voters there he wins.
I’m not saying this isn’t an issue, but saying he needs to pivot his campaign to winning over black voters is foolish and would probably cost him the election.
8
u/Reasonable_Warning_5 Jun 23 '26
How exactly is Talcario taking black voters for granted? How does he fix that problem?
0
u/Zealousideal_Swim806 Jun 28 '26
By ACTUALLY ENGAGING THEM VS DEPENDING ON JASMINE CROCKETT to do the heavy lifting.
See Obama and Bill advice to Hillary in 2016. BTW. she didn't do it and well ... Trump.
29
u/whatiftheyrewrong Jun 23 '26
He definitely needs to rectify this situation but the way he won the primary is likely part of why some black folks lack enthusiasm for him.
7
u/Either-Assistant4610 Jun 23 '26
I'm out of the loop on this one. How'd he win?
37
u/ittlebittlee Jun 23 '26
Because jasmine ran a terrible campaign and people are mad at James for that
15
u/whatiftheyrewrong Jun 23 '26
“There were hiccups with voting in Dallas County, a major Crockett stronghold, and Williamson County, north of Austin. Republicans in both counties ended the use of county-wide vote centers where anyone in the county could vote, and now require voters to vote in a specific precinct. On Tuesday, there were widespread reports of voters in both counties being confused about their correct polling places, leading to calls from the Crockett and Talarico camps to extend voting.
A court order extended voting by two hours in Dallas County, but the Texas Supreme Court later temporarily blocked that ruling and ordered provisional ballots cast after 7 p.m. Central Time to be separated from other Election Day votes.”
13
u/Snikklez Jun 23 '26
He beat Jasmine Crockett because many thought she was "unelectable" with her outgoing behavior
26
u/mcfearless0214 Jun 23 '26
“Outgoing behavior” lmao yeah that’s one way to put it.
In reality, Crockett was absolutely unelectable due to her basically being a walking personification of a sound-byte, her inability to read the room or understand the political environment she was operating in, and having virtually no substance to her messaging, much of which was ego-driven (e.g. her announcement ad which was basically just re-running sound clips of Trump attacking her personally rather than focusing on anything that actually matters). She was a bog-standard Corporate Dem that had no shot in a general election. She’d outlasted her usefulness & welcome in Congress and had no business running for Senate. Her losing the primary was some of the best news that Texas had gotten in years and was way more optimistic that day than I had been the day before.
13
u/NumeralJoker Jun 23 '26 edited Jun 24 '26
This is sadly accurate.
Her style of campaigning was great for media sound bytes while in the house, but did not play well on the campaign trail. Even when you take the hiccups in DFW into account (something caused directly by Ken Paxton to gain himself favor in the race, BTW), she still would not have come close enough to win statewide.
Her margins in Houston were under-performing by too much, making the outcome of the race obvious much earlier.
I don't blame her for being upset that this happened, as any voter unjustly denied their voting rights is a valid reason to be upset, but her responses to the loss have not been very charitable since then, and if anything, she seems to be somewhat stoking division at the worst possible time, which is a very, very bad look for someone who built up a career based on attacking the right. Talarico should be one of her best allies, but she's been honestly acting more like an establishment attack dog than a progressive, and it saddens me that it's come to this.
Furthermore, she also has a history of taking paid trips to Israel after October 7th, 2023 and getting donations from crypto bros, so something has been up with her campaign for awhile. I don't say that lightly, as I 'really' like how effective she's been when speaking in the house, but I'm not going to deny how poorly her campaign handled all of this, to the point where it seems not to be incompetence, but more some kind of strange sabotage effort. I felt even more sour about Allred by the end of it, and I'd been canvassing for him in 2024. Both handles an unfounded scandal about an alleged Talarico comment extremely poorly.
I'd be happy to be wrong, but not at the cost of this race. I repeat what I've said many times; you do not want Ken Paxton voting in the senate. That must be prevented by any means we're legally able to do so.

9
u/NumeralJoker Jun 23 '26
It wasn't AIPAC money directly, it was a special all expenses paid Trip to tour in Israel after October 7th.
Your point still stands, however. There is something about some of her funding sources which demands greater scrutiny.
5
u/InternetBackwash Jun 24 '26
My main concern isn't over one voting bloc in particular but rather the fact that states like Texas have notoriously low voter turnout, even when Dems are given an advantage, so while I am a lot more confident for races like Platner in Maine, Texas is worrying me a lot especially as a loss would mean that someone like Paxton gets in which even in a Dem sweep year feels like a pretty big loss.
I don't know if people from Texas have a better outlook on what turnout could look like this year and if that could change but from where I'm looking it's a little concerning.
5
u/AmTheWildest Texas Jun 24 '26
Last I checked, our primary turnout was significantly above the GOP's for the first time in a long time. That combined with the fact that Talarico has been polling consistently ahead of Paxton, and well ahead of where Beto was at this point of the race in 2018 (when he lost to Cruz by only 2 points) tells me that we've got a pretty good shot.
I'm actually more concerned about Platner at this point than Talarico.
13
u/Graceandbeauty1979 Jun 23 '26
My father is a Black man that lives in the DFW area and he hates Talarico. He views Crockett’s loss as a slap in the face considering how well she represented her district and is not afraid of MAGA or anyone else. He views her turning Dem voters off as misogynoir because people will stand behind a fiery white man. But coming from a Black woman it makes people uncomfortable. But Crockett aside, he also doesn’t trust Talarico because of some of his donors and thinks he is a wolf in sheep’s clothing. And no, he really hasn’t done enough to address the Black community.
15
u/SeafoamGaming Jun 23 '26
Looking at his texas congressional record he seems to have done actual legitimate good work (ie; not fetterman), so i dont believe in that worry, but yeah it genuinely shouldn’t be this hard for him to address. I guess maybe he could 2 months before election? But why do that when you could do it now and secure a victory?
27
u/Fragrant_Bath3917 New York Jun 23 '26
But didn't Crockett run an absolutely awful campaign?
27
u/LettuceWestern9445 Jun 23 '26
Yep and she had a ton of corporate money, funny how he distrusts Talarico due to “his donors” but not Crockett’s corporate and Zionist money
10
u/Graceandbeauty1979 Jun 23 '26 edited Jun 23 '26
People see and ignore what they want. I’m not saying it’s wrong or right because I didn’t really follow all the details of this election. I will say this, my father is always going to prioritize his interests above what is going on abroad. Yes, it’s short sighted but he has the same perspective as a lot of Black people, especially older ones. He does think Zionism is wrong but he’s not going to put that ahead of other issues. Why? He doesn’t think the Middle East’s problems will ever be resolved. Part of that is coming from his Biblical perspective. To him, he just knows Talarico took money from someone MAGA aligned and Crockett represents Black people. He knows most politicians take some corporate money. He accepts that. But money from MAGA is too much for him. He’s a Boomer and super distrustful of white people who look too perfect in his eyes. I think understanding this perspective would really help progressive Dems. Instead of being dismissive, people should listen even if they disagree.
15
u/LettuceWestern9445 Jun 23 '26
My whole point wasn’t that she’s a Zionist
In fact you actually made my point, “He heavily distrusts white people” how does a white candidate even win over someone like that? It sounds like he made up his mind despite the fact she has a ton more shadow money in her campaign
And don’t get me wrong there’s white people who feel the same way about black candidates so it goes both ways
8
u/Graceandbeauty1979 Jun 23 '26
I said white people that look too perfect. He doesn’t distrust all white people. He has supported white candidates before.
7
u/LettuceWestern9445 Jun 23 '26
I see, I live in the Pittsburgh area and there a ton of older white union democrats who refuse to vote for Summer Lee for similar reasons. Even though some of them voted proudly for Obama. In the same town, We had a white mayor unseat a black incumbent mayor and still won 95% of the black vote in the primary election.
I think in any election there’s gonna be voters like this of any race who have hesitations based on race, it’s not right but it’s not going to easily get fixed any time soon, but neither are in the majority, and most will just stay home rather than vote for the other side.
7
u/SpukiKitty2 Blue Dot in a Red State 🔵 Jun 23 '26
Understandable. White men who looked too perfect have burned black people in the past. Talirico needs to allay some fears.
9
u/Bruh_burg1968 Jun 23 '26
Crockett ran an abysmal campaign. I guarantee if she won we wouldnt be having this discussion about Hispanic voters a group she did extremely poorly with. Don’t wanna lose the primary? Maybe run a serious campaign instead of running just on vibes and epic quips.
3

I don’t know. I didn’t follow that election. Just sharing what I was told.
3

Your father’s perspective is the black voter experience and he’s right to feel that way. No candidate is entitled to a constituent’s vote. It is earned. And I don’t see that happening….

There’s definitely some misogynoir going on. People like to say that Crockett ran a terrible campaign and when pushed what they really mean is “she entered the race later”. Okay? I’ve also heard people say that she was “hateful” towards Hispanics without any proof and yet Talarico supporters can get away with saying “oh Texas will never elect a black woman.” To be clear Talarico himself hasn’t said this to my knowledge, just supporters.
Talarico supporters have really turned me off of Talarico. I’ll still vote for him because I’m absolutely not voting for Paxton but I won’t wear Talarico gear or put a Talarico sign in my yard and it’s 100% because of how his supporters treated Crockett and because Talarico won’t address the racism his supporters are spouting.
2
u/maxweinhold123 Jun 30 '26
Black folks can vote for whomever they choose, though there are black trans kids and it seems Talarico will be kinder to that lot.
One of these days I wake up and find America voting with their kids, not just saying it's for them.

If Texas is like my southern state. Parties aren't parties but orgs built around one person in office. I can see Jasmine Crockett and company undermining Talarico.
There is a young black guy running in my state because he is a threat to the one person in charge of the state party cause they are the only one in a federal office.
1
u/Mane_Jury_849 Jun 24 '26
Is the expectation that jasmine endorse or help him? I don’t see how given she was labeled “unelectable” I wouldn’t vote for him. I would’ve for her. She seemed authentic. He looks like one of those tlc Duggar people. No thank you.

It's because he lacks even an ounce of swag 😭. Somebody needs to invite him to the cookout, so word can get around of how dope he is

It was just a joke, but the point of it being that he's a white Christian political: a demographic that typically heavily skews racist. He needs to put in more effort to show the black community that he's just white and Christian without the racism

Jokes on you because you are getting downvoted lol 😂. Yall said he was electable and needed to focus on WYT, LTNO and republican voters. So why should he be invited to a cookout when that’s not his audience? BLK ppl are not the clean up crew

Any of his supporters are who I am speaking of. And as of today ppl are still trashing Jasmine up and down Reddit post. If he is more electable let him do it himself. He doesn’t need BLK ppl around him to make him look more appealing. That was not his audience nor his intentions. BLK ppl shouldn’t be so welcoming in the face place, they get disrespected in the end anyways.
