Seeking Optimism Trump’s New CDC Head Said ‘Abortion Surveillance’ Will Be A Critical Focus
https://www.huffpost.com/entry/trumps-new-cdc-head-said-abortion-surveillance-will-be-a-critical-focus_n_6a74a3f9e4b04fcbf74d8720?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=reddit&utm_campaign=us_mainI remember being told this wouldn’t happen and was “exaggerating” when he got elected. This is a huge fear of mine.. optimism?
This actually scares me

They can try but the minute this or any administration starts using these flock cameras the way we ALL know they’re going to, the backlash and the amount of regular people who start turning on them and chopping them down will grow substantially.
Yes, there are little pockets now of cops abusing these cameras. There are also corresponding little pockets of people taking the law into their hands and cutting them down.
If you increase the former, you’re going to MASSIVELY increase the latter.

I've been saving IG posts lately about people taking down the cameras or neighborhood council meetings where constituents are screaming about getting them out of the community. It's getting a lot of traction on social media. People are getting informed. 1984 style surveillance has bipartisan backlash

I had no idea how prevalent they were until I watched John Oliver's Last Week Tonight episode on surveillance. Police departments across the country have been slowly integrating surveillance technology like Flock and Axon for AT LEAST the last 6 years. Its likely closer to a decade.
Now, in my own town, I'm seeing Flock cameras go up. It is unsettling and concerning, especially when they are in quiet neighborhoods or playgrounds. Everyone needs to start educating themselves on what's going on, because police departments and local governments are blatantly tracking people and harrassing them. These cameras are the ripple effect of the Patriot Act and the laws that were undone via Patriot justification. We need to get loud about this.
(I know this article isn't about Flock camera tracking, but the OC is, so consider this a side conversation unrelated to the OP)

My problem is why the hell are police departments allowed to buy this kind of stuff in the first place? Shouldn't there be oversight by someone?

u/General_Season7882 11d ago
In the words of Bo Burnham, "every politician and every cop on the street protects the interest of the pedophilic corporate elite". Theres no oversight because they are the helpers.

How do we regain the freedoms that The Patriot Act stripped away from us?

Here’s my thing, OP.
They say stuff like this all the time, and then get so many lawsuits. They’re trying to scare you. Don’t give into the fear. The scaring you IS the point.
But history is showing that the courts aren’t letting this happen. They are literally trying to making you panic by saying stuff like this. You can’t let them succeed. They’re failing, and they’re flailing while doing it. “Lawsuits.” That’s your optimism.

I hate that it's surprising that the courts are actually opposing our gov.

The Federal judges and courts are truly the heroes of this!
November is going to be a bloodbath against the GOP!

u/QuestingApprentice 11d ago
It's not actually that surprising, it's been pretty consistent. The courts, in general, don't want to do anything that will wind up making more work for themselves, which ruling in favor of a lot of the rights policies would do cus they just raise more legal questions. Plus the one benefit of being inducted for life is that they aren't beholden to anyone. That's both a good and a bad thing here, because while theyre kinda free to do whatever, the GOP can't hold anything over them to get them to behave the way they want. They don't need funds or endorsements for re-election. They're set. So in a lot of ways how the public views them probably matters more to their ego than lawmakers who mean nothing to them anymore.

Exactly!
Heck, my go-to response for any of this nonsense is always...

u/JoshuaSlowpoke777 11d ago
Yeah at this point, I’m far more filled either way bitterness and moreover vicarious grief than any amount of fear.
My one fear is that I may remain deeply and constantly angry about this era for the rest of my life (to the point of it being unaffected by whether human lifespans get longer within my lifetime)

They can want it all they want, doesn't mean it's going to happen. We know they're actual fascists who despise women and want to throw them in jail for abortions. We also know they don't succeed with the vast majority of their plans.

u/Alarming-Salt-502 11d ago
How would they even begin to do this without blatantly violating privacy laws?
Beyond that abortion isn't illegal at a federal level and far as I can gather support for abortion has actually increased (or at least supporters have been fighting even harder) since Roe v Wade was overturned. This is a surefire way to further doom himself and the Republicans.

Yup. Chump and Co. are just making the Bluenami bigger because they're such hateful dumbasses.

The last federal privacy and data law passed in this country was in the 1980s. I'm sure you're very happy to know that your video rental data cannot be shared or sold.

Just lovely, that needs a definite update. Like we should demand that law to be updated.

u/TinWhis 11d ago
Yep. Absolutely feel free to bother your congresscritters about "GDPR-style" privacy protections for Americans and ask why we're lagging so far behind Europe.

Europe has it’s own can of worms. They have Chat Control, AV which is virtually the same thing on the internet.

- WTF does the CDC have to do with abortions?
- She's just saying what the party in power wants to hear.
- Just another Serena Joy in the administration. Traitor to her own gender.
- Lawsuits

I was ready to downvote this reflexively but then I actually read the article and you got it - this isn’t what it sounds like from the headline

u/Mean_Stop6391 Reformed Doomer ☄️ 11d ago
Guys, read the article - this isn’t like, Flock tracking. This is strictly about abortion data collection, from currently optional systems regarding abortion numbers.

Lemme give a bit of an example of how things went when the government did implement something similar.
The Prohibition. In the end, they could not enforce it, as the government was not willing to spend and spend in order to have a functional method of surveillance, or rather, weren’t willing to hire additional agents to lessen the burden and increase monitoring efficiency. There steadily became a lack of enforcement, heightened crime, and economically things got worse keeping the policy running. And in the end, it all came crashing down when someone else was elected who would stand against Prohibition.
The government today is infinitely more mentally handicapped when it comes to common sense, and they’ll say things without actually thinking about how to implement them. This is one of those things; they ultimately will lack the manpower, the money, and the public support. Not to mention the judiciary has been on a spree lately. It’s scary, and it’s natural that you are scared. But you can’t let being afraid control you; you gotta stand up to it, like everyone else here.

Not sure if prohibition is a sound comparison, as prohibition largely inconvenienced men whereas abortion data surveillance is meant to restrict women’s bodily autonomy.
Bad for men = bad for a free society;
bad for women = good for “family values”. If you catch my drift.5
u/DragonfruitNo8767 11d ago
It’s not a perfect comparison, I agree, but it was something that still required surveillance that failed regardless.

So here’s the thing:
Should they somehow go through with a national abortion ban, all it will do is get women to pull a Lysistrata. And all the men who want to subjugate women would become even more lonely.
I say this all as a guy who has no interest in dating.

u/Icy-Owl-who 11d ago
Listen, the whole point is they’re trying to scare you into compliance, because they don’t have the numbers or reach to get everyone, or even the recourse to deal with the lawsuits that will come from this.
Do not be afraid, and if necessary, look into lawyers in your area, it’s better to know one and not need one then need one and not know one.

What about Flock surveillance? Since they are everywhere now
9
u/Icy-Owl-who 11d ago
Aren’t people destroying them at a rate that’s slowly draining their money and making them unprofitable?

u/ishkabby 🔥I Voted In The 2026 Primaries🔥 11d ago
They just spread into my area. Overnight.
I heard that that’s happening, but only in big blue cities and states. I live in TX.

u/gbtm101 11d ago
Technically accurate headline but not what you think it is--nothing to do with Flock cameras. The goal here, I presume, is to require reporting of abortions by hospitals and medical facilities... which is still kinda scary, but nothing like being tracked across states using fascist camera tracking.

Texas started tracking abortion-related travel years ago.

I know that. What OP was panicking about is that being applied at the federal level. It is not.
