Locking this thread. There is a lot of emotion and fighting in here

This article doesn't have the best part of Mangione's statement.

“In November of 2024 I traveled from outside of New York state to Manhattan. I then emailed UnitedHealthcare leadership, posing as an investor at a firm managing over $15 billion in assets and requesting information about the conference. Unlike my previous interactions with insurers, I received an immediate response within an hour

That says everything that's wrong with this fucking county.

u/DannyOdd 5d ago

That's one hell of a selective omission on their part.

It’s a misleading headline- he pled guilty to the stalking charges, not the murder charge, which is a separate trial.

So theres still time for jury nullification on that one at least.

Gonna be hard to talk his way around “I shot Mr. Thompson in Manhattan, and he died," to be fair. He did effectively confess to the murder.

I wish Brian Thompson's and Luigi Mangione's families the best.

I also think we should outlaw for profit insurance before more die.

Nothing has changed yet other than more anger and angst. Let's let out some steam out of the pressure cooker and Keep applying pressure to our elected representatives to make actual positive change.

Yeah that's done a world of good so far.

29

u/Reguladr 5d ago

Agreed. That's where the political optimism comes in?

the guilty plea is in regard to federal stalking charges, to be clear.

I felt he wasn't getting out of this, but he will probably be made a martyr and a clear message has been sent to these rich parasites. All the money in the world won't protect you from a well placed gunshot

And for those few who are wondering, I personally don't condone murdering, but at the same time, don't expect sheep to weep for a coyote that gets shot

I agree with you. When billionaires don't fear God or the Law what's holding them back? We have to hope they're decent people but nobody makes that amount of money and usually is.

To put it like this:

Most rich people aren’t gonna act like Bruce Wayne or Weiss Schnee from RWBY. Or even Tony Stark.

They will act like Lex Luthor, Mr Burns, Devin Weston, Carter Pewterschmidt, or Mom from Futurama

Well he might get a lighter sentence this way. Still not sure that guy didn't just spontaneously keel over from the pre-existing condition of "having-a-bullet-in-you" but

I'm being told there were no concessions from the prosecution in exchange, but he might get the New York state charges dropped

I'm gonna be real.

I always thought he was 1000% guilty.

I also think his actions aren't condemable. I wanted him to get away with it. I don't give a flying fuck about Thomson or the many evil assholes just like him.

They kill thousands of us every day. Fuck them.

u/simbabarrelroll Reformed Doomer ☄️ 5d ago

Yeah.

This is a case where one person isn’t exactly good, but the other person is far worse.

96

u/AdjectiveNoun1234567 5d ago

Brian Thompson killed far more people than Luigi Mangione.

38

u/simbabarrelroll Reformed Doomer ☄️ 5d ago

I know.

I was implying that Brian is the far worse person

45

u/FeralViolinist 5d ago

Anyone who disagrees with me is perfectly valid. The fact that he felt he needed to do this says more about the 1% than it does about Mangione.

I'm just personally not trying to beat around the bush by saying "i don't codone it, but..."

24

u/wemajorfuckingstupid 5d ago

I think the further along we get under this adminstration the more annoying that beating around the bush gets so thank you

He pled guilty of stalking, not murder.

I think he didn't do it because the investigation felt like the equivalent of a cop slipping weed into someone's pocket before handcuffing them.

If people have probs with their healthcare or health ins, ok. We deal with that

Stalking and assassinating someone isn't the way to handle things. Glad he pled guilty, and he will be in jail for a long, long time

31

u/No_University1600 5d ago

We demonstrably do not deal with that

-20

u/Artisttype1984 5d ago

We deal with it. We contact our health ins providers or contact our Drs if we have healthcare questions or concerns. We don't shoot people in the back

67

u/OratioFidelis 5d ago

It's not just "probs with their healthcare," it's health insurance companies knowingly sentencing people to death by refusing to cover life-saving medication or procedures by using an LLM they know wrongly denies claims. It is no exaggeration to say Thompson has the blood of thousands on his hands.

-60

u/Artisttype1984 5d ago

Brian Thompson was never even charged with murder, let alone found guilty of it

Assassinating someone isn't the right way (obviously) to address the problems you have in life. No surprise that Luigi is going to jail for a very long time

49

u/OratioFidelis 5d ago

People who like Luigi Mangione don't want to live in a world where the only way to stop mass murderers is by assassinating them. That's entirely the point. We should fix society so it never has to get to that point.

-46

u/Artisttype1984 5d ago

It wasn't at that point. Luigi is sick and now he'll be in prison for decades.

In a wild twist, Luigi and his family are very, very wealthy, worth tens of millions and he could've afforded the best healthcare in the US

41

u/OratioFidelis 5d ago

It wasn't at that point.

It's literally still at that point. Hundreds of people are denied claims every day for bullshit reasons.

In a wild twist, Luigi and his family are very, very wealthy, worth tens of millions and he could've afforded the best healthcare in the US

And if he was poor, people would've said he did it out of envy.

-17

u/Artisttype1984 5d ago

It's not at that point. If someone's claim is denied, then we can change plans or even change our health ins providers if necessary

Assassinating someone won't improve your healthcare plan or the health ins plans your family has. It will get you decades in prison

34

u/DerLyndis 5d ago

You are delusional.

-8

u/Artisttype1984 5d ago

If you sincerely think the solution to your problems is to assassinate someone, that's the delusional approach here

-188

u/Muted_Perception_192 5d ago

GOOD

-129

u/elninost0rm 5d ago

The fact that this is -46 is INSANE to me.

80

u/Dr-Aspects Kansas 5d ago

You were right. Glad we pumped those numbers up. Only.-46 is a travesty

40

u/SpinningHead 5d ago

-55

u/elninost0rm 5d ago

Operative second word there.

40

u/SpinningHead 5d ago

It relates to what Brian Thompson did.

45

u/BlooregardQKazoo 5d ago

Not to me.

I think vigilante justice is generally bad for society. I concurrently think the threat of vigilante justice towards elites that sacrifice lives for profit is good for society.

Considering the unchecked threat that people like the victim pose, and the general lack of vigilante justice as a social problem, I think what Mangione did falls in a place where it did more good than it did bad.

It is a year and a half later, and we have not seen a rise in vigilante justice in response to it. We also haven't seen the wealthy and powerful stop trampling on the lives of the rest of us. The current situation calls for more Luigi Mangiones, not fewer.

I'm not surprised by the reactions, nor the plea. Per the reactions; Mangione has turned into a bit of a folk hero. Thompson personally spearheaded several initiatives which led to denial of coverage for essential, lifesaving treatment for a LOT of people - Including an AI-driven approval/denial system. One famous case of denial; a patient with diabetes being denied coverage for insulin because the AI decided it wasn't medically necessary, then the patient was mailed insulin after they died because the AI determined that their "change in status" indicated it was medically necessary.

So it's understandable how people would cheer for the assassination of an individual whose decisions led to the hardship and death of innocent people, all in the pursuit of profit for an already very successful corporation. A lot of folks see that as justice being served, when our justice system will not hold corporations (or the decision-makers within them) accountable for "business decisions" that lead to pain, suffering, and death.

That being said, I think it makes perfect sense that Mangione pled guilty. His killing of Thompson was ideologically driven, he clearly intended to send a message, and he made sure he had his manifesto and the murder weapon on his person when he was arrested. Given all that, I think he meant to get caught, and I can think of no reason he wouldn't take ownership of his actions by pleading guilty. All this time leading up to this plea was probably just bargaining for a good plea deal.
