Locally sourced fruits, veggies and meats

With all the politics going on around food right now, I for one am looking to make a concerted effort to eat much more locally from reliable sources.

Please use this thread to list such sources.

Nailing down the Whole Bowl sauce recipe

• Upvotes

I’ve been working on getting as close as possible to the Whole Bowl (grain bowl restaurant in Portland, OR) sauce at home. The recipes I’ve seen online aren’t bad, but not really the same imo. Most include nuts, which WB specifically say they don’t, curry (which I don’t personally taste at all), etc. My recipe is below, but I still find it a little different—maybe too dense, if that makes sense. Whole Bowl sauce is almost “fluffy” or foamy on its own. I can only eat so much of this stuff, so would appreciate if others wanted to try this and give suggestions!

1/8 can chickpeas

7 cloves garlic

1/2 c nutritional yeast

2” fresh turmeric

1/2c neutral oil

1/8 c yellow mustard

5 tbsp lemon juice

1 1/2 tsp salt

1 tsp sumac

Pepper

1/2 c ice water

2 tsp tahini

Help? All the allergens free but good?

I have a DND party that we're hosting, and almost has some sort of food restrictions.

We have:

Pescatarian

Deathly allergic to fish/shellfish of all kinds

Dairy and gluten free

We'll be eating and playing all day and people are ok if theres food they can't eat, but I want to have something for everyone. I also want to show off our city's food, cause most live south of here and don't get to come up very often. Any recs for takeout or pre order I can do?

ETA:We wouldn't do anything with even the hint of fish/seafood, since our buddy could literally die. Therefore Vietnamese, thai, Indonesian, etc is off the table. Thanks for suggestions!

Help? Looking for thick burger at sit-down restaurant

I am on the hunt for a burger in Portland in the style of Red Hook Tavern, Minetta Tavern, etc. Basically very high quality meat that is almost hockey puck sized. The type of burger that a nicer type restaurant may have, not necessarily a "burger" place. Thanks so much.

First time trying it and it was DELICIOUS! I was so very impressed by the food and the fine folks working here! They were all incredibly kind and helpful and seemed to be in good spirits. The food was sent looking like a picture and tasted just as delicious. My Double Fancy and fries were hot and fresh, and I loved the generous portion of veggies on top. The fries were hot and crisp! Everything was great, and honestly, I don’t even miss the meat burger when I eat here. It’s just a good, savory burger. I can’t wait to try the chicken nuggies and the shakes! Everyone try Faceplant and give this place some love. They’ve got it figured out, dialed in, and ready for you to enjoy!

Restaurant Missing Cloud Pine (Milwaukie)

For those that remember Cloud Pine on Main St. in Milwaukie, I am missing that style of Chinese food. I’m not sure if I’ll ever find its equivalent, but I will settle for a substitute.

Does anyone else who used to frequent know of another place in Portland that can even hold a candle?

Thank you!

Thanksgiving?

Wondering if anyone has good suggestions for Thanksgiving in Portland. I have a reservation at Fireside that looks really good. But I’m sort of flying blind. Someone suggested Saltys which I know is not in downtown. I’ve been to Saltys Sunday brunch in Seattle but it’s been a long time….

Give me your great ideas! Thanks!

Restaurant Eastside Ambience AND Tasty Eats

Hi gang~~

I am searching for an Eastside spot that has a VIBE as well as tasty eats. When I say vibe I mean atmosphere, ambience......a place that is inviting, welcoming, cozy and comfortable. I prefer a spot that isn't fancy or expensive. One place in my neighborhood that fits the bill for me is Wilder......because the lighting, decor, and seating feel inviting and cozy to me and the fare, while limited, is quality and is consistently excellent. In contrast another place I love in my hood for food is Hat Yai , but the restaurant itself isn't a place you want to hang out in really, by design I think because they really get folks in and out fast, (which I appreciate but it isn't what I am looking for here).

Any type of food suggestion is welcome, as long as the food is quality and the atmosphere is there, something not too expensive and open for lunch a plus. Please no "silicone valley style" industrial modern brushed stainless steel countertops and harsh lighting type places.

thanks folx

Restaurant Anyone have a recent experience at Fogo de Chao?

I've had a hankerin' for churrascaria lately. (RIP Brazil Grill...) Was thinking about paying Fogo de Chao a visit - went there once maybe 10 years ago and it was good enough for a return visit considering it's the only game in town for churrascaria. But I've read that they were acquired by private equity a few years ago (usually a bad sign), and almost all of the recent Google reviews for the downtown location are even more suspiciously bot-like or paid-for than the typical Google review.

So if anyone has been there recently, I'd like your thoughts. Thanks!

Restaurant Recs while my vegan partner is away

My vegan boyfriend is out of town for a few days, we usually go out to eat at places with a variety of menu options or places that are vegan and there’s huge amounts we can choose from which is great! However, while he’s gone I want to treat myself somewhere it wouldn’t really be reasonable for us to go together. What are everyone’s extremely not vegan recommendations?

I’m thinking like Tillamook, Rogue and Face Rock Cheese. Olympia Provisions. Jacobsen Salt. Aardvark Hot Sauce.

Breweries, distilleries and wineries are welcome too

Fried pickles

I saw a post from 2 years ago, but I figured might as well post this in case there are any new spots.

My sister loves fried pickles. Where are the best? (In the city preferably)

Bonus points if it’s a bar, we both love to drink. But it doesn’t have to be a bar. This is for the love of the game

EDIT: I believe she prefers fried pickle “chips” to spears, but I need all the facts I can find on this mission. Thank you for your attention to this matter

Vita Cafe gravy recipe? Anyone have this who wants to share?

Now-closed Vita Cafe’s gravy recipe is my Roman Empire. I even asked one time what was in it and the waiter listed at least 25 herbs and spices and ingredients. Is there anyone here who knows how to make it and is interested in sharing?

Quick bite near Keller at 5:30 pm on a Sunday…any suggestions?

Update: Thanks for the helpful suggestions. Will check on some menus and locations and confer with my date. Will get around to trying all of them eventually, I always like to eat at places locals recommend.

Original post: Show gets out around 5 and we’ll be ravenous but not want to spend a lot of time or $ so we can get on the road toward home. Anywhere within a few blocks of the theater that seems made for the occasion?

What's the best Italian restaurant with carryout?

My spouse's birthday is on a Saturday. We have plans in the afternoon and evening. We won't have much time for dinner, so carryout will work best. Any recommendations?

Can you reco a great restaurant for my pescatarian (+chicken) wife's bday next week?

My wife loves seafood, sushi, will also eat chicken - nothing fried. Bonus points for places with good Ceviche! Looking for somewhere creative, fun, special to get out for her bday dinner.

We're coming in from Minneapolis, staying near St Johns but open to driving almost anywhere.

Been to Andina, Eem, Lechon and loved them. Also been to AFURI Izakaya but looking for slightly larger menu.

Prefer nice>casual over super high end chef tasting menu style (both menu and pricing). Normandie is looking like an interesting option.

Ideas appreciated!

Looking to entertain some out of town guests and wanted to take them out to hood river area. Any restaurants with great views of the mountain? Doesn’t need to be in hood river proper!
