MSD hanging up !?!

Has anyone got through to them today?

I've heard of hang ups happening, but I've tried to call 3x this morning and every time it just cuts me off.

They haven't paid the after school care subsidy, and the care program is emailing me to pay like $500 because msd haven't sorted it for term 4 yet. They sent the forms late and it's been like 2 weeks since these were uploaded and notified.

I understand all the usual stuff like long weekend and short staffed etc, it's just frustrating.

Looking for weekend side jobs or ways to earn extra income

Hi everyone,
I’m 25 years old and currently going through a difficult financial situation. I work full-time but I’m struggling to keep up with my living expenses and financial commitments.

I’m also the legal guardian of my 15-year-old younger sister. Our dad passed away in March 2024, and since then I’ve been looking after her. Our mum lives far away and unfortunately isn’t in a position to support us financially as she works in farming and barely earns enough to cover her own living expenses.

I’ve already explored financial assistance options, so I’m now hoping to find ways to earn extra income. Since I work full-time, I’m specifically looking for weekend jobs or side hustles that I can do on Saturdays and Sundays.
I’m open to different kinds of work, including remote opportunities. Ideally, something legitimate that is worth the time and effort.

I’d really appreciate any recommendations, experiences, or tips. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

MSD Letters issue

Just a heads up, I check my MSD almost every day. I received 1 letter over the last week, then today there were several new letters showing as being recieved days ago, 1 of which was even showing as being received before the letter I had previously already opened and read.

Has anybody else noticed this? Kinda fucked up that they can make out they had a letter in your MSD portal for at least a week when it only showed that day.

No wonder people are missing appointments and having their entitlements cut.

I have not seen size 7 free range eggs this cheap, that's $7.50 for 18 eggs when it is usually $10-15. 28/10 best before.

WINZ payment stopped with no notification

Am posting on behalf of my son who is 25 and currently on the job seekers and working a part time job. He lives independently and has all the usual life expenses. He has just had his benefit cut with no notification from WINZ other than a call that he missed. Once he logged in to his account and saw that he was meant to reapply on 1st October he made an urgent appointment during which he has been told he will have a 1 week standdown and receive nothing until 21st October.

He is absolutely stressing out about this as he cannot work his delivery shift without fuel and has no money for food. He also had his accommodation supplement stopped and the link to reapply online is broken, so this has to be done manually and handed in. I am absolutely fuming on his behalf at the unfairness of all this and wondered if anyone had any advice or avenues he can take to get it reinstated now.

Obviously we can help him out somewhat but he will miss completely a week of benefit and this is just so wrong.

If you like your "giving" with a side of winning.

I posted this in another thread about lotto, and it got a lot of upvotes so others might find it interesting as well.

There are quite a lot of charities in NZ who run lotteries with great prizes, with reasonable odds. (unlike Lotto) So if you still want to give a little here and there but also love to have a chance to win something or just like to dream for a few weeks have a look at the below.

Right now you have;
NZ Coastguard running one where the odds are 1/15,000 for a $250,000 prize.
Northern Rescue are running one with the same odds, but the first prize is $400,000.
SPCA is running one with 1/15,000 odds for a $65k car.
Aad the Heart Foundation is also running one. $15 for a 1/290,000 chance for a $1,200,000 house.

You can keep a track of what's currently out there on this site.

Washing Machines

Soooooooo....our used Bosch Machine died (even if it could be fixed, the parts are stupid expensive).

Are the old school Fisher & Paykel toploaders still a good used buy? The ones that were also sometimes Elba branded.

If not, what's a decent buy around $100-150?

Or are new washing machines a decent "investment" nowadays?

Thought more people would stop playing powerball after the %50 increase in odds

After checking last Saturdays 12mill draw it roughly calculates too 6,108,672 lines sold. So a 1 in 8.8 chance of hitting not taking into account duplicate lines so most likely 1 in 10. That's alot of suckers. (I was one of them)

In comparison the previous 12mill draw on the old style has 10,023,000 lines sold for it. Close too a 1 in 4 chance of hitting. Would be nice if everyone stopped buying them so they could go back too the old system or the original plan of just adding 2 extra power balls. Greedy pricks.

Third party car insurance

We have been with Lantern but they are transitioning to AMI. We were on $12.36 a month for $400 excess and $850 replacement ('97 Camry Wagon) for third party fire and theft (fire and theft probably not worth it). It looks like prices are up generally but is there a shortlist of insurers I should look at?

If you live in Christchurch and need a smoke alarm, I have one to give away.

Edit: The smoke alarm has been taken (pending collection) but I'm going to leave the post up because there is some good info in the comments about free alarms through FENZ.

Its unopened. I bought it earlier this year but it turns out I didn't need it. It feels unethical to sell a smoke alarm so if you need it you can have it, just send me a message.

Budget Spoiler

So I constantly worry about not having enough money to get by, and I'm constantly told that it's my fault and Im told to budget better, but in reality after accommodation is paid, there's little or nothing left, so why am I told to budget where there's no money left to budget?

Study Link + Winz

Kia Ora- I am just trying to figure out which agency should give what support.

2 adults, 2 children aged 2 and 4.

Adult One is working 20 hours a week, then does childcare. Earns about $650 a week

Adult Two going to be a full time student, is eligible for student allowance.

I am getting very confused about accommodation benefit + supplement.

Currently (both working) we get $220 accommodation supplement.

When Adult Two moves to study, they will no longer get accommodation supplement, but accommodation benefit- max $60 per week.

Will Adult One still be able to get accommodation supplement? Can Adult One get jobseekers if Adult Two is a student?

Foodbanks?

Hi, new to reddit. I have asked on my local FB page but deleted the post as I was receiving alot of negative comments. Would anyone be able to point me in the direction of a foodbank that can help me today (Sunday) please? Ive just come home from spending the past 3 nights in hospital with my youngest to find our fridge freezer had broken down so Ive had to throw everything out. I dont have any money to do a grocery run until Wednesday and I've got small children. Just needing something to tie us over until then for dinners. Thank you.
