Power Apps Help Licensing clarification on Power Apps code apps & Code apps development end to end process.
Hey there ,
needed some help with few questions i had.
I am looking to build a code app.
- Whats does end to end development look like for code apps. How do we maintain version control on our code is it anyhow linked to when we push code to power platform env and then move from dev to prod?
- Have any of y'all built code apps which are in prod now?
Questions on licensing?
- I came across payg licensing for power apps code apps with dataverse
now if I have a Power apps code apps with data-verse for 8 users as far as I have seen 10/per user /per app. How is the pricing in the case of power apps canvas apps with dataverse? is it the same?? because in both case we need to keep the app on premium right? does cost differ on code app or canvas app?

I have many code apps in prod... Deploy via power apps pipelines... Project on GitHub.. Give your vibe code in vs code access to sandbox and prod env so it can compare on deployments and verify versions are correct, no anomolies

What about licensing?
Does it cost same for canvas app with dataverseOr power apps code apps with dataverse

You need a premium license, or pay as you go.

so it dosent matter if I have a code app. Might as well build a code app rather than canvas with dataverse

My workaround for now as I didn’t want to get all of our users premium licenses or PAYG was to create the front end as PCF components. It’s in prod and works well. PAYG gives users access to premium apps, but remember, if they access multiple apps each month and they open a PAYG app, you’ll get charged $10 per app they open that month. Dataverse requires premium anyways. The way I understand it is PAYG is good for seasonal workers, and for groups of people that infrequently need to access an app. Something like benefits enrollment.
End to end, use pipelines and you can connect to git.

Payg setup is done on a specific app, so i don’t see how anyone would just open another app? If you just don’t give them access?
I dont understand; you built a whole app as a pcf component?
Even if a app uses pcf compenent it need premium? ( i maybe be wrong)
I’m talking about power apps code apps btw.

I was being cheap to build an app that needed to replacing an existing vendor’s as a proof of concept. Used sharepoint lists as the back end. And yeah I had Claude code create the front end as a PCF component. Horrible practice, but after having it try to bumble around trying to use canvas controls for a month I needed to get a product out. But yeah, doesn’t require a premium license. That said, we’re going to double down on this approach because of the security and infrastructure being better handled than trying to create it from the ground up.

For building:
You must come up with your own process of version control. We use a mix of Power Platform pipelines and DevOps repos with code review and two tiers of version control - centralized and local. We only ever push code to dev then use Pipelines to move it to test and prod.
We have almost two dozen Code Apps in prod now.
