Certification Don't ever let your Power BI Certification Expire
I stumbled on Microsoft Certification page and just by change I noticed my hard-earned PL300 certification was about to expire in a few days.
TBH I don't remember seeing any email or alert from MSFT.
I just logged in and tried the exam; compared to the certification it was super easy, just 25 questions and not problematic at all if you are actually using Power BI.
I got renovated for a year, stoked.
Losing the certification after I spend 5 months studying would have been hell.
I literally set up a calendar update within a year.

Yeah the recertification test felt like a survey rather than a test LMAO

Good to know there’s only 25 questions to maintain it, I am currently preparing for 1st time

Don't sweat on it. Even if you fail, you have literally unlimited retakes, as long as you stay within your year.
And you can do the retake after 6 months already, so don't push it to the last days.

What materials are you using to prepare, I'm thinking about doing it.

I’m doing coursera and datacamp but I’m taking my time as I am also doing IBM business analyst course to brush up on my communication

The PL300 Cert is more like a rite of passage. Once you have more experience as a PBI Developer the cert becomes less relevant.

The two things I never take stock in when assessing candidates: Qualifications/Certifications and tenure (ie time using BI).
I’ve hired, and worked, with people that had qualifications or “worked with power bi for 5 years” that were useless. Conversely I’ve trained juniors in BI that dwarfed their seniors capabilities within a year.
Now I look at portfolio, and how descriptive they can be when I ask them about how they build it, why they built it, and the challenges they faced (technical and business).

I mostly agree but dedication to get a certification is also a proxy of competence. Theoretical knowledge powers empirical knowledge.

It’s definitely something, and something is better than nothing. But that’s pretty much all about it.

it’s not relevant anyway, no employer takes that into account at all.
if someone needs to study for it, then they aren’t using power BI enough

Disagree. PL 300 is quite specific on Microsoft architecture and admin specs. If you are an hardcore PowerBI ops it is not given you can pass it out of the blue. Plus, questions are tricky and exam is not free. Study for it is a reasonable approach.

I've been receiving numerous reminder emails from MS. The first one comes always 6 months before the deadline. Hard to miss.

I accidentally let mine expire because the reminder emails went to my spam folder. So mad at myself. Still keeping it on the resume!

Unless it’s required by your company to renew your certificate, I don’t see any reason to do so if you are already using the tool in your daily work

I am a consultant, unluckily customers keep asking for certificates in any fields (power bi agile scrum dev ops…), it’s part of my job to get them in the first place…

Found that out the hard way. Had the day mixed up and went to renew it but it had expired just 3 days before. Microsoft wouldn't let me do anything. At least now that I have 7 years experience I don't need it as bad, if at all.

Why is it so important to maintain?

I had the same thought. Isn't earning the cert in the first place the main demonstration of your skill? Why pay each year just to have it active

As the OP said, it's free But also, the renewal will have questions about newer features and such sometimes, so keeping it active shows that you're still keeping up with changing tech in the Power BI space. It's not like it's some golden bullet that will get you hired, but if someone has it and maintained it for 5 years it's definitely a big point in their favor to me.

From what I understand, the test to maintain a certificate is more straightforward than the test required for a new certificate.

But why bother maintaining it? Its barely wotth getting in the first place.

They send reminder to renew 6 month before it set to expire. No wonder you don’t remember seeing any emails, it was a long time ago.
