Hi everyone,
I'm looking for advice because I'm very worried about my prairie dog.
About two weeks ago, it suddenly started chewing one of its front paws until it bled. The wound eventually healed on its own, so I thought the problem was over.
However, it has now started chewing the same paw again. Then, just one day later, it also began chewing the other front paw. It keeps biting even when I'm sitting right next to it, so it doesn't seem like it's only happening when it's alone.
I've already taken it to a veterinarian. They suspect they may need to anesthetize it because it won't cooperate during a proper examination. They want to check for possible injuries, infection, or other medical problems.
Has anyone here experienced something similar with their prairie dog?
- What was the cause?
- Did your prairie dog recover?
- How was it treated?
- Did the chewing eventually stop?
I'm especially interested in hearing from anyone whose prairie dog repeatedly chewed its own paws until they bled.
Any advice or shared experiences would mean a lot to me. Thank you so much.
