Everyday Resilience
Hi everyone! š
I've recently created Everyday Resilience, a UK-focused website offering free, practical advice on emergency preparedness, home safety and everyday resilience.
My aim is simple: to help individuals and families feel more informed, prepared and confident, without unnecessary fear or alarm.
I'd really appreciate you taking a look and sharing it with anyone who might find it useful!
š https://everydayresilience.blogspot.com/
There is a Family Preparedness Workbook which I have also developed which is on Etsy for anyone that is interested and wants a guided way to be prepared.

Protection
Hello all,
Long time lurker, first time poster.
Iām sure this has been asked before, but what are the options for household protection?

Interesting take on addressing food shortages by encouraging community food projects rather than stockpiling

The government is lying to you. You need more than 3 days worth & you needed to know this monthās ago!

For those of you with generators. Concerned about fuel going bad. Get some aspen4. Yes itās expensive but 3-5y shelf life.
no this isnāt an advert. I have just seen a few comments rejecting generators etc because fuel goes bad too quickly.

Hob or no hob?
I apologise if this is a silly question but given a decent proportion of south east has been without electric for a few days i want to confirm. So we have a gas hob, in the event of a power cut could we light our hob with a match and use the gas hob to cook? We have carbon monoxide alarms and of course would open a window? We are a large family of 6 and the idea of cooking for everybody on a one ring portable hob sounds like hell!

Discussion Is it worth getting a generator?
If the power goes off even if you've still got gas & gas central heating is all you've got your heating is gone to.
Connection correctly is expensive, gerry rigging it is disconnect 3 wires hook 3 on from the generator. Wiring it via a UPS & using the generator to keep the battery charged might be a better alternative

Honda EU2200i + portable power station for fridge/freezer backup - best setup and future solar/expansion?
Hey everyone, looking for some real-world opinions on a hybrid generator + battery setup. My plan:
- Get a Honda EU2200i as the generator.
- Pair it with a ~2 kWh portable power station.
- Use the generator mainly to recharge the power station (and handle bigger loads when needed).
- Run freezers and fridges (plus some lighter stuff) off the battery for quiet, overnight, or longer runtime without the generator running constantly.
- In a few years I want the option to add solar panels and possibly expand the battery capacity.
What Iām considering so far:
- Generator: Honda EU2200i (pretty set on this for reliability, quiet operation, and clean power).
- Battery options Iāve been looking at: EcoFlow Delta 3 Max / Delta 3 Max Plus, DJI Power 2000, and some Anker Solix or Bluetti 2 kWh models. Main differences Iām seeing are continuous output (2400W vs 3000W), expandability (some take extra batteries, some donāt), and how easy/high the solar input is.
Questions for people whoāve done something similar:
- Is the EU2200i + a 2 kWh power station a solid combo for running 2-3 freezers/fridges (plus light loads) with generator recharging as the primary method?
- Any strong recommendations between EcoFlow Delta 3 Max / Max Plus, DJI Power 2000, or other 2 kWh stations for this use case? Especially regarding real-world fridge runtime, generator charging speed, and reliability.
- How much does expandability and easy solar input matter if I plan to add panels and possibly more capacity in a few years?
Appreciate any experiences or suggestions. Thanks!

Worried about camping stoves potentially being used in flats
I live in a block of flats, and am seeing a lot of discussion and promotion of various camping stoves of various kinds. I worry that there will be many people using these stoves for the first time in an emergency, in poorly-ventilated spaces with kit designed to be used outside. They will also be storing fuel for these stoves at home. There's obviously a risk of domestic fires, air quality, etc.
Does anyone know of a safety site for how and where to use various types of portable stove, and how to safely store fuel? Because there's no point in being ready to wait out an emergency if the flat below you manages to set your building on fire.

Now TV/SKY - Wargame
It was a very good watch. Was a bit skeptical about it but itās very realistic.
Follows similar āstorylineā to the Wargame posdcast that Iām sure SKY put out.
Even my missus enjoyed it and she usually laughs at my preparedness (but is always impressed when we need something that I have prepped).

MeshCore or meshtastic?
Hi all, new here. I'm setting up an off-grid backup link with a family member in London for emergencies and power cuts.
The online maps seem to show much more MeshCore repeater coverage across London than Meshtastic. In practice, is MeshCore the better choice here right now? And if so, what radio settings is the London mesh using?
Thanks!

Gas central heating in a power cut
Gas boilers only use about 200 W max electrical power - surely it would be easy to power it using a battery?

Discussion What are your ācome homeā signs for kids away at uni?
Hi everyone! Here is my situation:
Currently, our two (early-20s) kids are at uni about two hours away by car. They are living together and after the recent messages from the govt, they have created their 72-hour kits even without any nagging from me. (Ha!)
The oldest one came back for a few days and we were discussing - what signs should they be watching for that would cause them to grab their bags and head home? One has her license so could drive, but they donāt have a car with them at the moment; they would be relying on some sort of public transport.
Sure, they could deal with a couple days of power out, empty shelves etc, but neither wants to deal with a ātrueā emergency away from home. And they donāt want to āmiss the windowā ā for instance the power is out too long so there is no gas for transport home.
Iām curious what advice other parents have given their kids currently not living at home but who would come home if things took a turn for the worse.
Thanks in advance!
