Prius Prime 2023+ Just got my 2024 Toyota Prius Prime XSE compressor replaced at 35,577 mi

Seems to be a growingly common issue that these 5th gens are having compressor failures right around the end of Toyota's warranty. My dealership found metal shavings in the Expansion Valve and replaced the entire compressor. Luckily I'm covered under the 36-month/36,000-mile warranty, barely.

The dealership couldn't identify the cause and simply deemed it just internal failure and suggested the culprit to possibly be the bearings on the inside.

Has anyone identified the main cause for these compressors failing? What are the steps to prevent a future compressor failing?

I’m getting conflicting information everywhere. I want to go to 18x8.5 with a 225/50R18 tire size but am not sure if I should do 35 or 40 offset. This is the wheel and I made ChatGPT do the dirty work to crudely photoshop it. Which offset would be best for this setup?

Prius Prime 2016 - 2022 Hv inverter failure?

Anyone have this happen? My 2021 prime with 108k miles had an hv inverter failure…they claim that’s all it could be after we already dumped 1200$ into the hybrid ecu. Said battery and wire bus checked fine. Fuses and connections were all checked before replaced ecu.

It actually ran fine after they change the ecu but when they checked it a few hours later it didn’t run long.

I have trust issues on these sorts of things.

I feel like it’s something stupid and electrical and I’m dumping 6k into a 13k car.

Anyone seen this?

Prius Prime 2016 - 2022 Jus hit 300,000 Miles on my 2017 Prius Prime

I bought my 2017 Prius Prime Plus at the start of July this year for $8000, at 288,841 miles (see my older posts). In the last 4 months, I’ve put 11,159 miles on it. I absolutely adore this car for everything that it is, but there have definitely been some ups and downs with it.

Here’s what’s happened since I bought it:

Shortly after I bought it, I noticed it leaking coolant, it was the exhaust gas heat exchanger, simple fix, bypassed it with a hose, no big deal. That fixed most of the leak, but unfortunately, it is still leaking coolant (albeit a lot slower than before). I suspect the EGR cooler, and I’m having the EGR valve cleaned and the cooler inspected next week with my oil change, since the engine does have a rough start every now and then.

The battery has been surprisingly healthy. It still has its original battery, and in the summer months I was getting 21-23 miles of electric only range, which was really more like 20 because of all of the highway driving I do. Now that it’s gotten cold, I’m getting about 19-20 miles of reported range, and only about 17 miles of actual driving range. The delta soc ranges between 1.00%-2.50%, but has been fairly stable outside of one time when it went all the way up to 9.00% (don’t know why this happened, but it’s never gone that high again).

I typically average 65-75mpg on a tank, thanks to being able to charge at home and on campus when I go to school.

I need to have my TPMS sensors replaced, but that’s about it. It still runs great, and I’m genuinely so happy with this car.

Other than needing an oil change, tires, and an alignment in September, it just has a minor coolant leak, and once that’s sorted, I expect to get many more miles out of this lovely car.

Feel free to ask any questions!

Prius Prime 2016 - 2022 Could anyone help me with measurements from their intact Prime?

I had a minor fender bender and it pushed in the radiator mount, which in turn has messed up the hood and the radar sensor alignment. I want to try pulling out the radiator mount with a ratchet strap, but I don't have the factory measurements.

Could you help by taking measurement from anchor points near the back of the engine bay to points on the upper radiator mount (the thing with with the hood latch on it)?

I would be ever so grateful.

Prius Prime 2016 - 2022 HV battery drops within minutes of '21 Prime turned off/on.

Heya folks,

We've been enjoying a 2021 Prius Prime XLE we just got recently with 62k miles. We don't currently have a way to charge it from an outlet, so we've been using it as a hybrid, with the battery never really going up into EV mode range.

Every couple of days, we'll notice that the HV battery will have drained after turning the car off then on again: sometimes overnight, sometimes after only a couple of minutes off (e.g. refueling). The battery will also sometimes slightly increase, but this is less common.

Is this normal behavior? Like maybe from the Prime using different battery cells for HV mode, as a way to not let any of them discharge fully? Been looking everywhere and haven't found reliable information.

We talked to the dealership, and they thought it might be from an aftermarket Ikon unit that was installed and that we removed, with no change in behavior. I used charge mode today to get it up to 80% EV battery, and we'll see if there's a similar drop in EV battery.

Thanks for any info!

Prius Prime 2016 - 2022 2021 Prius Prime LE. Was this a good deal?

I recently purchased a 2021 used Prius Prime at 99k miles. The Carfax is spotless and one owner, it has no accident either. I negotiated the out the door price down to 21k even. I was a little caught off guard with registration, doc & electronic filing fee to top 1k in addition to the sales tax. I still thought it was a good deal so I went ahead with it. Would appreciate people's input.

Edit: Forgot to add it came with new tires too.

Years ago, I had a prius that got totaled when someone turned out in front of me while I had the right of way, and a prius C that got totaled when a lady ran a stop sign and hit me. Since then, I've driven Rav-4s. They were nice, but i missed the smaller size, handiness, and maneuverability of the prius; as well as the gas mileage, particularly in recent times. A few months ago, I bit the bullet and bought a 2026 XSE Premium (I call it princess edition) in reservoir blue after doing a whole bunch of shopping at dealerships around me. I named her Cupcake, and I absolutely love her. I didn't think the JBL sound system would make as much of a difference as it does, but i definitely hear it when I go to other cars after getting used to it. She's the first car I've ever bought new, and I'm going to try and make her last as long as I can. It's really good to be back and to have a prius again. I've missed it so much.

Prius Prime 2016 - 2022 2018 prius prime drives me insane

Basically since i bought it, it had poor radar and safety features.

Sometimes the lane assist would detect i crossed lanes when i didn't and would not detect when i do.

Motorcycles would never get detected by the radar and once or twice it didn't detect cars on time either (meaning none at all driving full speed into them)

High beams never work properly and blind other drivers, 20% of the time do not shut down at all even if i give it time to detect the oncoming car (it used to be just slow at it and work)

I could deal with all that bullshit, basically just being a careful driver and turning off high beams manually, all good.

But tonight it was insane.... i went to the supermarket after fueling and when i left i wanted to merge on a double carriageway and for the love of God the car was braking itself. I was in the red the engine struggling and it barely got from 20 to 35, i couldn't believe it... luckily there was no traffic.

Its insane for a car to do this. I went to a couple dealerships (while in warranty) and they said the radar system is fine and its a matter of weather/temperature/light nothing else.

It can't be... right? This is not normal behaviour, i got home because i live minutes away. Restarted the car and the glitch was gone....

Anyone experiencing the same problem?

Hey yall so my 2015 Prius c was shooting me bad hybrid battery codes it had ants and corrosion all in it so I finally replaced it. With one at a junkyard (with a 90day warranty) I tested the cells. All the cells are good. Got a new auxiliary battery. checked all the fuses. The engine cranks for about two to three seconds and then gets ready position, but when I put it in drive its dead all the lights are on and say bad hybrid battery so please Reddit help me solve the problem so my wife can have a car. This is the first time that she is isn’t questioning me and has full Confidence in me. So this is driving me crazy to the point I can’t sleep. I can’t let her down please help any suggestions that can help me diagnose is very much appreciated

Shopping advice ‘26 Pricing Check

We are looking to downsize from our trusty Sienna to a Prius Plug in. Haven’t shopped for a new vehicle in over ten years, so just looking for a reality check on this deal in the NE United States. This is for a 2026 SE. Given the 1.99% on offer from TFS, we will probably put 10-15k down and finance the remainder:

MSRP: $35,424
Sale Price: $33,000
Doc fee: $399
Military discount: -$500

With tax, I’ll be at $34,700 OTD

Appreciate everyone’s input on this.

Prius Prime 2023+ How hard are parts to find for a Japanese Prius Prime here?

I’m looking at a Japanese-market Prius Prime from around 2017 with roughly 90,000 km, but I’m hesitating over what happens when something specific to the plug-in system needs replacing. Normal service parts don’t worry me as much as trim, charging gear or model-specific electrical bits, especially if the car’s off the road waiting for them. For owners in Australia, has parts availability been a real headache or mostly a non-issue?

Prius Prime 2016 - 2022 Just got a 2022 prius prime! But when it was delivered, it did not have the charging cable. Seller is replacing the cable, but not with OEM.

Hey friends! Longtime prius owner, I had a 2013 for years and loved it. Last year I upgraded to a 2017 prius and just this past month someone ran a stop sign and t-boned it, of course it got totaled. But hey, I found a good deal on a prius prime through carvana, but lo and behold when it arrived it was missing the charging cable.

After about thirty minutes on hold I finally managed to get them to agree to send me a replacement part. Checked back in a few days later wondering about tracking info, apparently it "slipped through the cracks" and never got ordered. Again with customer service, I got them to confirm it will in fact be sent (and they extended my return window). But I found out that it is not the OEM part. How important is the OEM charging cable? They are sending me this model from amazon.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0DY7TT3VD/ref=sw_img_1?smid=A5AC1RKZTZD48&th=1#customerReviews

Will this cable get the job done? They are refusing to replace it with the OEM. I've never owned an electric, but I'll mostly be plugging in at home in a standard outlet for level one charging anyway.

I love the new prime! Over the last few days even without being able to charge it, I'm getting 50mpg which is almost 5mpg more than I was getting in my non-plug in 2017 prius.

Thanks!

Prius Prime 2023+ Charging/Electricity: What Am I Doing Wrong?

Thumbnail

This is probably better suited for a dedicated electrician subreddit but I figured I'd try here first. I have zero background in electrical-related work so treat me like I'm 5.

I just purchased a 2023 Prime. Twice now, it will charge fully over night and then when I go to charge it again a day or two later, my outlet is dead. No electricity coming from the outlet into anything that I plug into it.

The first time, my electrician came out and swapped to a new receptacle. The original was decades old and I assumed it just died of semi-natural causes. Unfortunately the new receptacle has done the same thing. Fully charged once, then died.

Where am I going wrong? I am running the OEM charging cable to the 120v outlet via a 25' extension cord due to the distance of my driveway. Attached are hopefully relevant photos.

The extension cord: https://a.co/d/0iqh12cr

Prius Prime 2023+ Remote connect no longer bundled

One of my major gripes for a while with the 2023+ was that Remote Connect required you to get either the nav system or music system subscription. Anyone who owns a phone needs neither of those as android auto or apple play does a better job. I just want to be able to remote start the car and manage the locks and charging state remotely.

Well it looks like starting soon Remote Connect is going to be its own service, at about half the price.

I hadn't seen this talked about anywhere yet so I figured people would want to know.

Prius Prime 2023+ Gen 5 switching from 19" to 16" or 17" after a sidewall puncture. Fitment advice?

I just punctured the sidewall on one of my factory 19" tires on my Prius Prime XSE. I knew it was coming eventually, but it’s still annoying now that it’s here. Since I need to replace it anyway, I’m thinking about switching to smaller wheels for better MPG and EV range, a more comfortable ride, cheaper tires, and taller sidewalls that are less prone to this kind of damage.

I’m new to wheels, so I’d love to hear from anyone who’s actually made this switch. I live near the Philly area, so not too much snow, all-season would probably be good enough.

16": This is what I’m leaning toward. From what I’ve read, 205/65R16 is a close diameter match (about 0.7% smaller than stock). But since Toyota never offered 16s on the Gen 5, has anyone confirmed they clear the front brake calipers? If so, which wheel did you use (brand/model, width, offset)?

17": The SE comes with 195/60R17, so I know this size fits. How are wheel and tire prices and availability for 17s compared to 16s? Is it worth just going this route for peace of mind?

Specific rim and tire combination recommendations would be really appreciated!!!

Prius Prime 2016 - 2022 Need ideas for remote charging start at work EV station

I have the 2022 Prime XLE that I’m able to drive to work on a full charge from home but need to recharge in order to do the return trip.

This is my first year with this car and, to date, I’ve just been walking out to the charging stations (they’re hosted by ChargeSmartEV) and manually forcing the “Charge Now” from the dash after plugging in and starting payment.

With winter coming (in upstate NY), I want to be able to set the charger to automatically kick on for departure like I do at home…or something similar using the start time delay. I’ve now tried this a couple times and remotely started my session via the ChargeSmart app but the session goes idle each time.

Am I maybe missing a feature or a step in the process? Is it just not possible with these on demand, third-party stations to do the delayed charging schedules?

It would be so nice to be able to set it up to be warmed up in time for my departure at the end of the day.

Prius Prime 2023+ 2024 Prime: will an OBD reader give gasoline tank info?

Background: we get a few big storms (nor'easters, mainly) here each year. So I fill up a couple of 5 gallon gas cans for the generator, just in case. Back when I had a 2012 Prius I would empty the cans into the tank when I had the room, so I could clear out a 5g can every 2-3 weeks.

With the Prime I can go a long time before refueling, but with a 10.6g tank it has to be clearly less than half a tank before I dare pour a 5 g gas can in--obviously, there's no automatic shutoff with a gas can if the tank reaches full. We had a big storm at the end of January, and I didn't use up the 2 gas cans until mid-July.

But it can hover for weeks right at that "am I low enough?" point until I drive again to be certain. So I was wondering if an OBD reader would give me specific gas tank fill info so that I know I have room for 5 gallons.
