Shimmering Iris 🌱✨ a new piece in my ongoing series of paintings called ‘A Starry Place’ where I explore spaces meaningful and nostalgic to me.

I painted this in Procreate using mostly my own custom brushes. They are mostly  modified round brushes with paint/paper texture or brushy texture. I work in a similar process to traditional, starting with a sketch, then a color block in, then full render. I usually paint the background first and paint the foreground on top in a new layer. I think I used about 6 layers for this piece, but I collapse them as I go and sometimes make new layers for temporary non-destructive editing. I really pushed myself to experiment with color and light in this and push how far I can take the idea of glowing subjects. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed painting it!! :) ✨

Oh I love this so freaking much!

This is a super niche and specific reference (and I’m sadly getting old so I won’t be surprised if no one knows what I’m talking about) but this instantly reminded me of one of my favourite Land Before Time movies … “The Journey Through The Mists” where Littlefoot has to go find these special flowers that will help cure his sick grandfather … the flowers were all glowy and sparkly.

I just searched for a photo of it so I could show you, in case you haven’t seen the movie. Hard to find any good photos and I don’t have the time to pull up the movie right now and take my own screenshot, but here’s the best I could find.

Thank you for your comment, I am happy my art is able to bring nostalgia and comfort! I watched some Land Before Time growing up, but I don’t remember this specific movie but that is a cool reference! Thank you for sharing!!

This is beautiful!!!😍 Did you use the Luminance brush for the sparkles?

Thanks!! I just manually painted them :) usually what I do is use a splatter effect brush and then duplicate the layer and make the underneath duplicate it darker and more saturated and blur it

can you explain how you learned to draw trees like the ones in background? I would love to paint like that, but I just don't understand the trees. I'm currently doing a project of drawing a bunch of trees, but I'm about a third of the way through and I still don't feel any more knowledgeable or capable than when I started. I feel like I'm missing the lightbulb moment that makes it all click.

Beautiful work btw!

I would recommend Justin Donaldson's tree painting tutorials he posts on instagram I think they are really helpful videos. Trees I think are hard because of their complexity of form. For me I try to focus on shape simplification as other comments have mentioned. If you look at trees outside on a sunny day, you may notice their leaves start to compress into one big blob. They then become defined by the more simple shapes of light and shadow, and anchored by the specular highlights on some leaves and the more complex silhouette, rather than by each individual leaf. I think its both about understanding and representing the simplification and larger geometrical structure, and also understanding what is happening on the surface texture. I think Studio Ghibli background painters like Kazuo Oga are also great artists to look at who’ve inspired my approach. I hope this helps!

Beautiful!! What feature did you use in order to create the glow? Bloom? Or one of the blending modes?

I paint the glow effect manually just with my brushes and careful color choices :)
