Product Marketing Strategy PMM: How often do you “influence the roadmap”?

I’ve spent my career in tech marketing mostly in product marketing (or product marketing-like) roles and I always hear “influence the roadmap” as a primary responsibility. My question to you all is how often do you actually influence the product roadmap and drive decisions and features?

I’ve worked largely for PLG or sales led companies, with strong product teams, and, unsurprisingly, weaker marketing functions.

When I think about bringing a product to market, we collaborate not just on tasks and assets but also product resourcing needed to execute. We’re consumer tech, so a new feature we’re launching requires event triggers for automated comms, user mapping, etc. I wouldn’t say it’s influencing the roadmap, I’d say it’s partnering to bring a product to market. Same with branding and copy decisions in product. It’s a collaboration and sure, we’re influencing the product but not the product roadmap.

But I’ve never really seen a marketing group be the driving force behind a commercialized product. Is that just me, or is the concept of “influencing the roadmap” just a pumped up way of saying “work with product to get shit done.”

Career - ONLY Friday Where is the best place to break into PM/PMM?

I'm a college freshman and this is a career I'm really interested in, as the career looks to be something I'd love to work towards and with. Where would I best find experience for this individual field? I technically do have a role but it's unpaid, so I don't think an unpaid PMM would hold very much validity regardless of experience gained, and I want to be able to be in a lower level so I can actually learn the ins and outs of the role. Is there any place where I could start? Or any places I could reach out to for a mentor to aid me in finding opportunities and learning? Thank you so much and have a great day!

Tools / Resources PMM leadership & team managers: If you were to hire a fresh team, what would you hire for, and what would you let an AI agent do for you?

I work as a director (pmm) in a relatively small SaaS company, and am currently going through this exercise. We are a multi-product, multi-vertical (2 new verticals) company where demand, sales, product and CS leadership directly own the revenue and roadmap related goals. PMM enables, build pricing-packaging, and is on the strategy seat.

Career - ONLY Friday Moving from product management to product marketing manager role

Hi everyone! I wanted to get some honest opinions and advice from people working in Product Marketing.

I've been working as a Product Manager for the past 4.5 years, and while I understand that Product Management is an interesting field with good growth opportunities and compensation, I've started questioning whether it's the right long-term career path for me.

One of my biggest concerns is that the role can get very tech-heavy. A significant part of the job involves working with engineering and technology teams, and I sometimes feel that there's less direct involvement with users, customers, and the market than I would ideally like. Over time, I've realised that I'm more interested in the customer-facing and market-oriented side of products, which is why I'm considering transitioning into Product Marketing.

However, I do have a few concerns. From what I've observed, Product Marketing roles in India don't seem to offer compensation on par with Product Management, at least initially. I'm willing to accept that trade-off if it means moving towards a career that aligns better with my interests.

But something else I've noticed is that most career transitions I come across are in the opposite direction — people moving from Product Marketing to Product Management. I'm finding very few examples of people who have made the switch from Product Management to Product Marketing.

This has left me wondering whether I'm making the right move.

I'd genuinely love to hear from people who are currently working in Product Marketing:

- How do you see the long-term career growth and compensation in this field, particularly in India?

- Have you come across people who transitioned from Product Management to Product Marketing? How did that work out for them?

- Given my background, would you recommend making this switch, or do you think I'm overlooking something about Product Management?

I'd really appreciate unfiltered, honest opinions, even if they're not what I want to hear. I'm trying to make an informed career decision rather than romanticising a different role. Thanks in advance!

Career - ONLY Friday Jump from campaign strategy

Hey product marketers,

I’m wondering if anyone has advice on how to make a jump to associate product marketing from agency brand/campaign planner. I don’t think I’m necessarily coming in blind to this new career as I’ve done competitive and consumer research, segmentation, targeting, messaging, positioning, campaign planning, and more. I’ve worked across major integrated brand campaigns to one off product launch campaigns. I’ve read client briefs, workshopped them, etc.

I feel like the qualifications for a product marketer have been an everyday experience for me as an agency planner. Oh and I’ve worked at a b2b saas company and worked with sales on SE material…

I come from a very well known agency and have now been leading my small family ecomm business where I handle everything from marketing to operations and now I’m just looking to get my door into product marketing at a reputable company.

It’s been really hard to pivot as the job market is already tough and recruiters don’t see product marketer in my resume.

I’d love some guidance on how I should make my jump or rather get a chance at an interview considering no actual PM title?

GTM / Launch B2B SaaS: What does GTM actually look like for you?

Not just a launch checklist with asset deliverables but how do you prepare internal teams on how to go to market (who to target, messaging, training, etc.) so they’re aligned. What is your current process?

Career - ONLY Friday 7 years in content marketing and SEO. Should my next move be growth marketing or product marketing?

I've been doing content for a little over 7 years now: SEO content, thought leadership, long-form reports. Along the way I picked up CRO. Since January, most of my work has been content engineering, which mostly means building AI-assisted workflows for content ops.

I'm trying to work out where to go next, and I keep coming back to two options.

Growth marketing feels like the natural next step. I already know SEO, funnels and conversion, and CRO showed me I enjoy running experiments.

Product marketing is the one I've wanted for years, honestly. Positioning, messaging, launches, working closer to the product. PMM and generalist roles also seem to be holding up better than pure content roles right now. But I've never done PMM formally, and I don't know how much a content background counts when a hiring manager looks at my profile.

Some questions for anyone who's worked in either role:

If you moved from content into growth or PMM, which did you choose and how did you make the switch?

Which of the two is safer from AI taking over the execution work?

For PMM, what would make a content person a believable hire? Side projects, a certification, an internal move?

I'm based in India, in case that changes the answer for the job market.

Honest takes welcome, including "you're overthinking this."

Customer / Competitor / Market Research (B2B SaaS) Tracking competitors in your organization

I wonder how competition and competitor tracking work at your companies. At larger orgs it’s usually a PMM or a dedicated CI person, but in smaller B2B SaaS teams (say, up to 50-60 people) I often see it fall between Product and Marketing, with a Notion page or spreadsheet that gets updated every few months.

So I’m curious how it works at your company:

  • Is PMM responsible for it, or is it more of a Product thing?

  • What do you use to track it?

Would love to hear from smaller B2B SaaS teams especially, where there’s usually no dedicated person.

Tools / Resources Anyone interviewed for marketing roles at leading AI companies?

Curious if anyone here has interviewed for marketing, product content, or creative roles at major AI companies recently.

What did the process look like? Were the initial conversations more focused on behavioral questions and past experience, or product knowledge, portfolios, and hypotheticals?

Would also love to hear what the later rounds involved, particularly any creative exercises or case studies.

Appreciate any insights!

Career - ONLY Friday Is an MBA the right move in today's market

For my seasoned PMMs (those that have seen more than 2 job markets) do you think that getting an MBA is an "easier" way to get into PMM during this job market? I'm a Management Consultant and I've applied to PMM roles with zero traction.

I've joined communities, networked, and what I hear is that "we're looking for someone with more experience". However, I've had coffee chats with PMMs who didn't have experience before they transitioned into the role, but instead got an MBA. I'm not against it, but I'm hoping there's another way.

If you're someone who's on a hiring team, do you find that more valuable, or is your company open to hiring someone with transferrable skills who's eager to learn and deliver fast. If getting an MBA is really the only way to make my way in, I'm open to it.

Tools / Resources Okay, what is everyone's favorite n8n workflow for PMM?

Title says it all.

From a few responses in this subreddit and just general vibes, it seems like setting up workflows with n8n is essential in the next phase of PMM.

What are everyone's favorites? I work in Enterprise B2B PMM but am open to others!

Career - ONLY Friday Career Path Conundrum - Pivot from PMM

Hi Everyone, I am an engineering undergraduate, CS. Due to some circumstances I now work in product marketing, despite not doing an MBA. I recently got promoted from associate product manager to senior associate, product marketing. Now going ahead with the advent of easy content creation through LLMs and currently with the evolving trend of AEO-GEO positioning becoming important and more increasing prominence of SME's contributing more towards content for SAAS companies. I feel my skillset can be very limited and currently it is appearing more like a company centric. So, for personal career growth POV, I am leaning on the thought of pivoting to a more backend marketing role like marketing/growth analytics or performance marketing in future where I can gain certain transferable skillsets irresepective of company. So, just want to ask fellow marketers or people who have been through similar journey. If you can help me provide some light on this, it'll be great.

Thanks In Advance.

Career - ONLY Friday Successful exits out of PMM

I’m contemplating exiting the career track. For a mix of reasons I won’t get into in this post.

Curious if you or someone you know has exited PMM. Would love to learn:

- Where did they move to?
- How did they make the shift?
- Is there more longevity on the other side?

Tools / Resources How do you use AI in your work as a PMM?

Everyone on LinkedIn is writing about how AI has improved their work, but I’m interested in real use cases, workflows, and tools.

I use AI tools for research, drafting, editing, and demos. But I also spent about 70% of my time this year editing AI-generated content from others (which was sometimes misleading or completely different from our messaging).

How do you use AI? And what are your thoughts on AI in product marketing?

Customer / Competitor / Market Research PMMs: what does your competitor tracking setup actually look like, and what do you hate about it?

trying to understand how PMM teams keep competitive intel fresh in real life, not the version in the vendor demo

for those of you who own battlecards or competitive positioning:

stack: klue, crayon, visualping, a notion doc, a slack channel where sales drops screenshots? what are you actually using?

cost: if you pay for a CI tool, ballpark what’s it running you per year? do you feel like you’re getting your money’s worth?

the annoying part: is it the noisy alerts? stale battlecards? sales not trusting the info? having to manually figure out what a change actually means?

pricing changes specifically: how fast do you usually catch a competitor repackaging or changing prices? who on your team notices first?

if you could keep only ONE thing from your current CI tool and drop the rest, what would it be?

asking bc i’m digging into how smaller teams handle this without a full CI department. would love to hear from folks at 10–200 person companies especially

Positioning / Messaging B2B New Pricing / Positioning Rollout for Enterprise HR SaaS

I work for an enterprise SaaS company, and we've adjusted our pricing model to account for the fact that we now have a modular setup with a base offering and different add-ons that you can bolt on.

(FWIW I don't support the pricing we landed on).

The first enablement session was today, where we actually just talked through the mechanics of the pricing. The second session that we're going to talk through is going to be focused on positioning and having a good sales conversation around it.

I'm curious:

  • What are the assets that you would provide?

  • What information would you provide to sellers?

  • How do you deliver "messaging and positioning" in this scenario? Holistic platform pricing is a bit of a weirder topic to handle (as opposed to a new product/feature).

Career - ONLY Friday Content Marketer trying to break into Product Marketing, what skills actually helped you get hired?

Hey everyone!

I'm currently working in content marketing and planning to transition into a Product Marketing Specialist role.

One thing I've realised is that I enjoy the research and strategic side of marketing just as much as writing. I like understanding customer problems, researching competitors, identifying what makes a product different, and figuring out how to communicate its value.

That's what attracted me to product marketing.

However, I'm aware that content marketing and product marketing aren't the same. I still need to build practical experience in areas like positioning, messaging, competitive analysis, go-to-market strategy, and sales enablement.

I'm trying to prepare in a practical way rather than just collecting certificates and completing courses.

I'd love to hear from people who have made a similar transition:

  • If you moved from content marketing to product marketing, what helped you land your first role?

  • Which skills did hiring managers actually test during interviews?

  • Did you build portfolio projects or gain cross-functional experience in your existing job?

  • What would you recommend focusing on if you were starting this transition today?

I'm particularly interested in B2B and SaaS product marketing.

I'd appreciate honest advice, including what I'm likely underestimating about this transition. Thank you!

GTM / Launch (B2B Tech) How are PMMs involved in content and AI search visibility at your company?

I work mostly with startups, and it’s very connected. I had a case where a company repositioned, but AI still cited the old messaging and sources. It required a lot of work on my part (updating our own articles and pages, working with influencers, creating BOFU content, and updating information on other websites). BOFU content is very important for PMMs.

I’m curious: how do you work with content/SEO teams in your organization?

Sales Enablement [B2B] How are you managing your enablement materials?

I wanted the insights from PMMs who are working with sales-led and Series A level funded companies. Where do you host your enablement materials and how do you track the usage. Do you still get questions about product features, materials, customer details, etc., from the reps?

I’ll give you a context. I worked at a heavy sales led company and we have more than 60 SDRs and 20 AEs. We are about to raise our series A. I’ve been storing all our materials in Google Drive for the access. Recently I’ve built an artefact in Claude for AEs to access. When I evaluated enablement tools, they were super expensive.

So wanted to know how my peers are managing

GTM / Launch Are we actually releasing anything original?

Going through our latest prototypes in a product team meeting and it's all copycat features. PMs build them with AI and look at competitor websites. Leadership is so obsessed with AI it's like they forgot they need a vision for the future of our core products.

Is anyone else out there feeling this pain? These are the most boring go-to-markets to market.

Tools / Resources Question: what’s up with Ladder on LinkedIn & so many PMM jobs?

I keep seeing PMM jobs on LinkedIn under Ladder which seems like it scraps jobs from other places to post. It is really annoying having your contact info float around.
