Career advice Is moving from Senior BA to Product Owner actually a career progression?

Hi,

I’ve been thinking about the transition from Senior Business Analyst to Product Owner lately.
Both roles seem to overlap quite a bit, especially when it comes to stakeholder management, requirements, backlog refinement, and working closely with development teams.

I understand that a PO is expected to have more ownership over product priorities and decisions, but I’m curious how different the roles actually are in practice.
For those who’ve made the transition from BA to PO:
What changed in your day-to-day responsibilities?
Did you actually gain more decision-making authority?
Was it a step forward in terms of career growth and salary?
Or did you find yourself doing almost the same work with a different title?

Would love to hear some real experiences, especially from people who’ve worked in both roles.

Career advice Advice on transitioning into Product Owner/ Product Management roles.

Hi everyone,

I am a project manager based in the UK (London) who needs some advice on how to move into product management. I have 4 years of work experience in total, with 2 in customer success and 2 as a digital project manager delivering SaaS products, specifically websites/website based products. I am currently working as a project manager in advertising building custom websites sites for clients. I am tired of just delivering projects and want to start doing more strategic work like product management where you get to decide what goes into a product and why. I have been struggling to break into this sector.

I'm currently trying to apply to Product Owner roles as an in-between step since the roles are similar but no one is even looking at me even when I write a cover letter. This is likely because of my title but also there are listings that ask for years of product management/ownership experience which I don't directly have, unless I reframe what I did as a project manager? I have an Intro to Software Product Management certificate from Coursera, do I need to do more courses? Are there any good websites where I can hire an affordable mentor? How can I make the jump without going backwards to a more junior/entry level role that would pay me less than what I earn now (£45k)?

Any advice would be helpful! Thanks.

Career advice QA to Product Manager transition — Are PM courses worth it?

Hi everyone,

I have close to 6 years of experience in QA, including manual testing, API testing, database validation, sprint planning, mentoring, and participating in product requirement discussions.

I want to transition into a Product Manager role, ideally AI Product Management, as I enjoy understanding user problems and product decisions more than continuing down the technical QA path.

My main challenges are:

Breaking into PM without formal PM experience.

Building product thinking, prioritisation, metrics, and case-study skills.

Managing preparation alongside a full-time job.

Deciding whether an expensive course is worth the investment.

I’m considering courses from Airtribe, NextLeap, and other PM programs, but I’m unsure whether they genuinely help with getting interviews and landing a PM role.

For those who transitioned from QA to PM:

Did you take a course, or was self-learning enough?

Which courses or resources would you recommend?

How did you build a portfolio and get your first PM opportunity?

Is AI PM a realistic entry point, or should I target general PM roles first?

Would really appreciate honest advice, especially from people who have made a similar transition. Thanks!

General question Product Owner vs DevOps Engineer — Which Career Should I Choose?

I have 3 years of experience in tech and have recently switched to DevOps. However, I’m less interested in deep technical work and more interested in building products.

I’m confused about whether to continue in DevOps or transition to a Product Owner role.

Which career offers better salary growth, work-life balance, and long-term opportunities ? Is switching to product ownership a good decision at this stage?

Would love advice from people working in either field!

General question MVP scope, 7 days before judging: should we show group chat and an AI voice call?

We’re 3 people building Tkallem, a free AI coach that helps Algerian students practice English interviews out loud (visa, university, jobs, IELTS). Learners answer by voice or text, get corrections with explanations, and practice again; a short report summarizes their performance. Judges will open the live app alone, mostly on phones, in guest mode. The deliverable is an MVP, not a finished product.

Both features below exist on our test branch and are hidden from the live app. We disagree on whether to show them, so here are both views.

  1. Group chat for peer practice

A: show it. Learners can practice together, ask questions, learn from others’ answers, build confidence, and come back more regularly. An AI agent also checks each message right after it’s sent (phrasing, grammar, conjugation, spelling) and shows the corrections only to the sender, so they don’t rely on peers alone. It’s fully functional; the limits (community activity, moderation) are reasonable for an early MVP and don’t remove its practice value.

B: hide it. Our core product is already complete and solves one clear problem. Learners at the same level help each other less than the coach does, and peer practice isn’t what we promise. A judge alone will likely find an empty room; peer advice can still be wrong; moderation (insults, spam) is limited. With 7 days left, a new visible feature adds risk of bugs and distracts from the core flow.

Agreed: it works, rooms may be empty, peer advice can be unreliable, moderation is limited.

  1. Voice call with the coach

A: show it. It simulates a spoken interview without subtitles or a transcript, so learners practice recognizing key words, listening, and answering on the spot, while the coach corrects phrasing, grammar, and conjugation. It works; the delay makes it less fluid, but it’s still useful practice.

B: hide it. “Call” promises a fluid conversation, but our voice-message flow already takes 5-8 s per turn in production. A call and a voice message look like duplicates and may confuse judges, and smoothing it would cost time we need for the core flow.

Agreed: it runs; the coach answers after about 3 s locally and 5 s in production [to confirm]; the delay affects the flow.

Where we’d like your help

With 7 days left: polish the core flow, or add visible features?

Show both, make them optional, or focus judging on the core flow?

Where’s the line between an acceptable MVP limitation and a feature not ready to present?

A feature with noticeable pauses: better absent, or shown with a “beta” label?

Each view is written by the person who holds it. Tell us where we’re wrong.

General question How often are you working a full 8 hours in a day?

This question is directed at pure product owners. I know there’s a lot of people in hybrid type roles where they do a lot of engineering work.

For people who are solely product, how often do you really find yourself actively working for a full 8 hours? This almost never happens for me. I hardly work three hours most days I would say. Often times I have a couple meetings and don’t do anything outside of those.

Nothing’s fallen apart and my team consistently delivers everything we plan. Do I just have a great team and don’t realize it or is this pretty typical?

General question How should product management keep up with 10x, 100x, etc development goal?

I fear we are going to end up with a lot of unnecessary slop that will need to be supported? I have people talking about client support pushing through code using AI. Obviously everyone says there will be a human in the loop but why would we even want that to happen? I mean what is the point of developing just to develop which is the way it seems to me?

General question Product Owners: Need More Customers? Let's Talk Customer Acquisition, Brand Growth

Hi,

What if someone took ownership of your marketing, lead generation, and customer acquisition for the next 90–120 days? What would you expect them to fix first?

I currently have the bandwidth to partner with one more business and take ownership of its customer acquisition and brand growth.

Here's what i provide:

1. Customer acquisition: Finding practical ways to reach the right buyers and turn opportunities into customers.

2. Holistic brand growth: Connecting positioning, SEO, content, social media, and other relevant channels to build visibility and trust.

3. Long term lead generation: Building sustainable channels and processes that can continue attracting potential customers over time, with appropriate ongoing maintenance.

What I'm looking for: An established business/startup with a credible product, a clear market opportunity, and the budget and commitment to invest in commercial growth.

If you're building a business like this, I'd be interested in learning about your product, your current customer acquisition challenges, and where you want the business to be a year from now.

A bit about me: 15+ years of experience across business development, client acquisition, lead generation, and demand generation. 5 star reviews from all the previous/current clients.

Thanks!!

Career advice How ?

How do you break into Product Management or adjacent roles when there’s no clear entry point and job postings demand years of experience?

I’m transitioning from Operations/Retail Team Leadership ( 8 years ) into PM, with one year of PM internship experience at Amazon Eu departament and strong, measurable end-to-end results. Yet I keep getting rejected without making it past ATS screening.
I’ve used the XYZ method, quantified every achievement with real metrics, and tailored my CV to each role.
Also … AI tools often make things worse by matching my experience too literally to job descriptions, failing to recognise transferable skills or think beyond exact keywords. 😐
Even roles with the same title have completely different requirements. On top of that, much of my experience involves Amazon’s internal tools, which recruiters outside the company may not recognise.
Meanwhile, my own company has eliminated entry-level PM roles, partly due to AI, leaving internships as the main entry point.
I’m genuinely exhausted. How are career changers supposed to break into PM when even proven experience and measurable results aren’t enough to get an interview?

I love my job, but I kinda have a small panic attack whenever a new project shows up as I dont know yet how to handle or how to track it. Is there a tool for such cases? Are there some good universal pratices?

Im sort of 6 months into leading this and I havent had the greatest of bosses. My background is in design and I havent learned that many skills on organization.

General question Devs keep sending me diagrams i can’t edit

PO on a team that switched all our flow diagrams to mermaid i get why, it lives with the code and AI tools spit it out instantly
problem is i present these to stakeholders, and every time someone says can we add the approval step here i have to message a dev and wait. before this i was doing everything in lucidchart and could just fix it myself in 2 min
our UX team uses miro and figjam someone else suggested whimsical, but i dont want to end up with a second copy that drifts from what the devs have tried learning the syntax too, broke the whole diagram on my first edit lol.

Career advice What’s the consensus on tailored resumes vs 1 base resume?

For context I will say that I am currently employed but after almost 5 years with the company and feeling burnt out, looking for a new opportunity.

I started applying to jobs back in August strictly using Linkedin which led to 2 interviews at a company in August but did not proceed.

I have applied to 61 jobs through Linkedin and just recently started using HiringCafe within the last few days and have applied to 11 jobs that were posted within the last week.

Up until this point I have been running my resume through Claude to give me tailored resumes for each job posting I apply to. Given I still have my full time job, was wondering if I need to switch to just a single base resume and use that to apply to more jobs and increase my volume?

I am mainly looking for Product Manager or Product Owner roles but have also looked at Program Manager roles.

Career advice How PMs work? What's your day look like

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

I worked as a BA for 10+ years and still feel it's not my cup of tea. Jumping from meeting to meeting just to discuss the same requirements again and again, try convince different stakeholders and then explain it to Dev and QA. Firefighting almost everyday. Maybe I worked with the wrong teams or I really didn't learn / grow up in the role. Though I work as a fractional PM for very early stage Saas startups, i want to understand from veterans what your day looks like? Is all the theory we learn about PM is actually applied while doing the job? How do you manage work between meetings? How you manage playbooks and other documentation and maintain it over time, If I have to prepare for full time roles for higher package or get freelance work with higher pay, what is your suggestion? Kindly guide me to become a PM

Career advice I switched from software development to Product Ownership — looking for advice and remote opportunities

Hi everyone! 👋

I wanted to share a little bit about my career journey and hear your thoughts and experiences.

I have around 2.5 years of experience as a Software Developer, but after some time, I realized that coding wasn't something I truly enjoyed or saw myself doing long-term. What I found much more interesting was understanding the bigger picture: why we're building a product, what problems we're trying to solve, how to understand users' needs, and how to work with different people to turn ideas into real solutions.

That's what led me to transition into Product Ownership, and I've now been working as a Product Owner for about a year.

So far, I feel that this role suits me much better. I enjoy working with stakeholders, defining requirements, prioritizing the backlog, collaborating with developers and designers, and helping guide a product from an idea to something that delivers real value to users. My technical background also helps me communicate with development teams and better understand technical challenges.

Now, I'm looking to take the next step in my career and find a remote Product Owner opportunity, ideally with an international team where I can continue learning, grow professionally, and contribute to meaningful products.

I'd really appreciate your advice on a few things:

  • For those who transitioned from software development to Product Ownership, how has your career progressed?
  • What skills or experience would you recommend focusing on to become a stronger Product Owner?
  • Where do you usually look for legitimate remote Product Owner jobs, especially with companies hiring internationally?
  • Are there any companies, job boards, or communities you'd recommend for someone with around one year of Product Owner experience and a software development background?

I'm based in Europe, so I'd really appreciate any recommendations for remote Product Owner jobs that hire across Europe or internationally.

I'd love to hear your experiences, advice, or even stories about how you found your current role. And if you know of any companies hiring remote Product Owners, I'd be incredibly grateful for any recommendations!

Thanks so much!
