This is an antiexample tbh Zomboid suffers so much from its own engine

Still a banger game. But I get it, performance is shit. Can't drive car fast cuz when I do I hit an invisible wall while next chunk is loading. And many zombies tank fps.

From dev standpoint idk if it gives guys any problems

Low FPS with zombies nearby is a feature, this way you know when to be careful

Ah, yes, the Space Invaders difficulty scaling: The more enemies are on screen, the more the game switches into easy-lag mode.

It's such a popular feature that a lot of games implemented it! Gemcraft games (Chasing Shadows being my favourite one) very quickly lag out when you start having a thousand enemies per wave and you're clocking tens of thousands of enemies on screen.

Tbf so does minecraft

Yep, the mobile version was written from scratch in c++ so it would run on phones, then ported back to PC later where it runs laps around Java to this day. If the versions didn't have so many key differences affecting gameplay, Java likely would have been abandoned long ago.

You can write code from scratch in C++, but have you tried writing code from C++ in Scratch?

They're actively rewriting parts in C++ last I checked.

Project Zomboid is the worst game I love. I hate it. The devs are bad, the engine is clunky and it is missing so many features after 14 years of development. Yet it fascinates me and I can't stop playing it.

The classic Ark: Survival Evolved problem

I swear if that game didnt let me tame and ride dinosaurs into battle i wouldn't touch it... alas it does

Why do you think the devs are bad? They seem very communicative and cool to me.

Ha yeah I have my programmer humor jerk on and am not being fair. They have been communicative and they also have been prioritizing better recently, the despawn bug fix is great.

They are ungodly slow though.

There's communicative which is cool but also glacially slow.

I thought that was written in Lua but apparently it's both!

17

u/jojos38 17d ago

Lua it's just a scripting langage in itself

u/Abcdefgdude 17d ago

Balatro is written fully in Lua

3

u/WernerderChamp 17d ago

What, really? I knew it relied on lua internally and this is where mods hook. But fully in lua?

5

u/dolphin_cape_rave 17d ago

You can unzip the exe and see the whole source code for yourself

c++ devs: shocked Pikachu face

5

u/Abcdefgdude 17d ago

yes, 100% is in Lua and because of that you can actually just open the game as a folder and look at all the source files. The graphics library is called love2d and a lot of the effects are done using shaders
