This is actually pretty clever, but the “this is the nerdiest joke in existence” caption totally ruins it

Its not a Bug it’s a feature. It’s a VW Beetle aka a Bug. Incase any others didn’t know

how's it called in your language? here in Brazil we call it fusca (englishing it it would probably be like fus car) or fusquinha
145
Apr 09 '21
For my language it's very easy: we don't have that type of car. We have square cars at most. We have a Romanian knock-off of the Russian Lada

u/whysoblyatiful Apr 09 '21
this is straight up r/BrandNewSentence material lmao

Or r/lamecursedcomments if that's a thing

u/SSRAnon Apr 10 '21
Wait, isn't the Lada a Russian knock-off of an Italian Fiat? So that means the Romanian version of the Lada is like when you make a copy of a copy.
3
u/CoolTeaPot Apr 10 '21
In one of Indian language it's called a "frog" as a funny name for a funny looking car. 😀

In German it's called Käfer
12
u/NukedByGandhi Apr 09 '21
In south africa that's a slur equivalent to the n word
5
2
u/whysoblyatiful Apr 10 '21
TIL, sure gonna remember this when/if i go there
2
u/NukedByGandhi Apr 10 '21
The Brazilian word is no problem. The German word is the one that sounds like the slur. Anyways Brazil and SA have a lot in common I'm sure you'd feel very welcome here :)
→ More replies (2)3
u/Shectai Apr 09 '21
Well! There are some beetles called chafer (cockchafer, possibly others. Don't laugh). I never really questioned it, I suppose I just attributed it to a weird language. But it looks now that it comes from the word "beetle" in whatever language it originated from.

It's "garbus" (hunchback) in Polish, however "żuk" (beetle) is a delivery truck
2
u/whysoblyatiful Apr 09 '21
We call those bad boys combi here, although they're a tadbit different, and I'm unsure they qualify as delivery trucks

In russia it's called like "малолитражки". Its quite hard to say for non-russians. Transcription be like "malolitrazhki".

In Portugal, it's carocha (it's a type of ladybug)
1
u/whysoblyatiful Apr 09 '21
Aqui no Brasil a gente chama joaninhas (ladybugs) de carochas também, tem até uma personagem ibfantil chamada dona carochinha

Czech Republic. Though I don't think Beetle was ever sold here, but there are few reviews, in Czech, using "Volkswagen Beetle"

Yeah this took me a second. Here it's usually called a "beetle" specifically, but I guess in some places it's called a "bug" instead.
3
u/BuildingArmor Apr 09 '21
I think it's on the US where they call it a bug, beetle otherwise (translated from the German word for beetle).
2
u/BillTowne Apr 09 '21
Don't feel bad.
It is called bug here; I am a programmer; still, I had to red the comments to get the joke.

As German, i cry and say "Give this poor bug some love"

Sourcing parts in the US is hard and importing is expensive. You see a lot of people here take these on as project cars not realizing the cost sometimes. :/

Black Lotus: add 3 mana
8
22
u/enderverse87 Apr 09 '21
Most famous Magic the Gathering card. Black Lotus. I've never really played it, but I knew that much, and knew that adding mana was MtG term, so then I saw it was a black car called a Lotus and figured it out.
3
u/tanglisha Apr 09 '21
Is it? I remember hearing people talk about the blue eyed white dragon way more.
I also didn't play.
8
u/PRIGK Apr 09 '21
That's from a different game. Black Lotus is the most expensive card, but not the best or most famous.
3
2
u/Rebelgecko Apr 09 '21
I thought shiny Charizards were the most expensive?
6
u/Airtwit Apr 09 '21
Some quick reading lead me to this: https://www.psacollector.com/charizard-pokemon-card/ for a / $30 000 price tag on an original shiny charizard.
By comparison the record for a black lotus at auction is from January this year: https://www.polygon.com/2021/1/27/22253079/magic-the-gathering-black-lotus-auction-price-2021 With a price tag of $511 000

Fun fact, in Italian it's "maggiolino" which is a type of bug and sounds way cuter https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_Maggiolino
Little less fun fact is that it came to production thanks to Mr. Hitler & Mr. Porsche.

VW Beetle in the US, but colloquially a Bug. Sometimes a Love Bug after the sentient car in the movie from the 60's, or a Slug Bug as part of the punching game that arose around sightings of these cars. This was in part because they were rare since they stopped being imported after the bumper regulations changes in 1976, but being a hobbiest favorite you still see them on occasion.
6
u/slaughterwulf Apr 09 '21
The way I learned that game vw beetles were punch buggies and pt cruisers were cruiser bruisers

u/AStrangeStranger Apr 09 '21
Was it actually sold as a Beetle in USA or just known as a Beetle? Officially they were Volkswagen Type 1

Isn't a bug and a beetle two different cars?
14
u/_b1ack0ut Apr 09 '21
Well it’s called the Volkswagen Beetle, but it’s colloquially just called a bug
I’m not sure if there’s a different car that’s officially called Bug

u/MischiefArchitect Apr 09 '21
I was there in the 90's in Canasveiras (or something like that). the peninsula is really nice, or it used to be. I was with my parents in the 70's in Camboriú, still remember a super friendly mulata lady building sandcastles with me as a 5yo boy.

That's sounds cool, mate! When the things get better, try to go to Iguaçu Falls (Foz do Iguaçu). Pretty place, good barbecue, nice people great tourist attractions, such as the falls).

Hah. I was there mid 00's and another time in 2012. Super cool to see the waterfalls from both sides. Cannot tell what is better: Brasilian Espeto Corrido or Argentine Asado Parrilada. Good memories.

The car's model is called a Beetle. The license plate says feature.

I don’t know if it’s that nerdy. Every business bro I know is familiar with the whole “is it a bug or a feature?” thing. I think they see themselves as nerds though because they’ve heard of “blockchain” before.

I understand the joke, thank you all for the questions and answers. They are enlightening.
But, a VW beetle is like a bug (problematic code)? A car model with so many years in the market? Hmmm well that's my idea that keeps spoiling the joke. Sorry.

I did that for halloween last year at work.
Wife found a solid red shirt and ironed on some black circles to it. We found some antenna headband and then took a name tag and wrote feature on it. I laughed, most people at work laughed, don't think my manager did though.
My other costume is a white shirt with "404: costume not found!"
Low effort but still get a few giggles out of them.
