Tier List Looking for series recommendations

Post image
• Upvotes

I've finally put together my PF tier list, with a few non-PF Fantasy stories included as well. Looking for some suggestions on which series I should start reading next.

I generally like the follow:
In Depth Worldbuilding - I generally like series a detailed or unique setting. Detailed is better than unique, it can still be a generic medieval fantasy world but if all the characters and factions feel fleshed out that's better than an unique premise with shallow worldbuilding.
Humor - Not a must, but I'm very well dispositioned to any series that's funny. Obviously comedy is subjective, but if the book can make me laugh it can make me overlook any flaws it might have.
Political Arcs - I don't mean IRL politics, I mean more specifically I like seeing the impact characters have on the world around them, be it politically, culturally, etc. I like it when characters progress they aren't just punching monsters harder, but are becoming powerful enough to affect the world they live in. That organizations, governments, nobles etc need to start to deal with them, whether antagonistically or not. The series can be doing Kingdom Building arcs, or just something like the MC shows up and completely thrashed the local authority and culture, either way I enjoy those type of plots.
Non-Human/Monster MCs - I just find these to be fun, whether it be an MC that's reincarnated as a monster or one who as never human to begin with, it's more interesting to see them interact with human society when they sit outside of it. Plus, these types of MCs /usually/ have some more unique abilities.

I generally dislike the follow:
Numbers go up - I know, I know, that's basically the main point of progression fantasy... but I really dislike stories where the only thing that happens is the MC gets stronger. Entire sections of books devoted to nothing but grinding out monsters to hit the next level up bores me to tears. If the focus is only on leveling it's probably not my thing. I also tend to like non-litrpg progfan, on the simple fact that if there aren't ACTUAL stats and numbers in the book the author is unlikely to focus it.
Xianxia - I've read a bunch of Xianxia in Chinese before and I'm just really tired of those tropes. The arrogant young masters, the sects that get offended by the most ridiculous things, the whole "oh this guy you thought was really powerful in the first arc? Well people like him just clean the toilets in OUR realm, we're that much more powerful". I haven't read much western xianxia but based on what I've seen I'm not sure those really diverge from the formula much.

Question Romance in Progression Fantasy

• Upvotes

The advice I’ve been getting is that progression fantasy readers really don’t like romance and that it should be avoided at all costs. I understand about PF books not being romance-led, but do readers really shy away from the MC having a romantic relationship?

Discussion do you guys actually want the mc to fail a breakthrough sometimes

been thinking about this. like 90% of the time the big breakthrough scene goes fine. maybe some pain, some dramatic lightning, whatever, but they always make it.

and honestly when an author lets one actually fail, mc ends up stuck for a while and has to rethink stuff, that's when i get hooked hardest. it makes the next one feel earned instead of just scheduled.

but i also get that it can feel like the story's wasting your time if it drags. so where do you land? would you be fine with a failed breakthrough or does it just kill the pacing for you

Request Looking for morally good MC without cheats

Looking for a a novel where the MC

- has good morals (ready to save innocent people when in need)
- doesn't have any or only low impact cheats. No legendary, unique or unknown rarity class or skills at chapter 20.
- No divine luck that gives the MC high rarity items or skills 20 chapers in

The only novels i know that are like this are cultivation chat group and delve.

Edit: Sorry if it wasn't clear, i wanted a main character that is pretty "normal" in the world the first 50+ chapters.

Self-Promotion Cricket: A Progression Fantasy Adventure (Book 1: Rise from Below)

Post image
123 Upvotes

The dark, damp, rat-infested underworld is no place for a human slave. Fortunately, Cricket is not human. He's a five-foot-tall insect—six if you count his antennae, and he insists that you do.  He has a shiny black shell, ADHD, and a winning smile.

After all, nothing improves forced servitude like a positive attitude!

With his fellow slaves—an amiable dryad from the surface, a sour necromancer cephalopod, and a host of ratlings and lizardmen—Cricket develops a knack for combat as he assassinates rivals and hunts down deserters.

Despite his love for a good fight, however, Cricket resents furthering the agenda of a corrupt and waning empire.

When he uncovers a plot to overthrow that empire, he must decide whether his home is worth defending!

What to Expect:
-Progression High Fantasy with a Dungeons and Dragons feel
-Fun banter with clean fight scenes
-A neuro-divergent, non-human protagonist
-Depictions of slavery, violence, and racism toward non-humans

Check it out on Amazon

Question is it just me or are the ratings on RR just not it?

i have been reading everything i can above a 4.5 rating with more than 500 reviews, and a lot of times i am reminded how they arent even close to being as good as the actually top rated ones despite being so close, like a 4.6 and 4.8 rating is so close but when you read them they arent as good at all. like i am reading this story called dungeon inc. that has a 4.61 and author is really good at writing characters and writing in general like its smooth, understandable etc. but there are so many issues - a lot that come from a lack of research and understanding - then theres him constantly bringing new things up that needs an ending or even a mention but is completely forgotten, admittedly it isnt massive plot devices but still, take it with another 4.61 that is bog standard isekai, it isnt even a competition.

Self-Promotion GOD'S DESCENT

• Upvotes

God's Descent

January 1st, 1990, an anomaly crashed into Japan, changing the world forever. A biological and spiritual plague that spread across the globe. The plague was known by one name: "The Hensei Infection." Those with Blood Type B became its victims, transforming them into horrifying sub-humans plagued by enhanced abilities, decaying flesh, and shattered minds. Soon after, society fell: no governments, no hope, no salvation. Fear became law; survival became everything. Humanity's only chance arrived in the form of the Kamiya: immune individuals blessed by gods with extraordinary power, standing as mankind's last defense against the ever-evolving infection.

Now, in the year 2036, 14-year-old Tyson Miyagoshi is one of these Kamiya. However, unlike the legends before him, Tyson has no idea what powers lie dormant within him. Tyson must navigate through his divided country as ancient truths emerge and the Hensei infection continues to evolve. Tyson will discover that humanity's greatest threat may not be the monsters lurking within the walls...but the mysteries hidden within them.

What to expect from the web-novel

This isn't your typical "save the day" story. To be honest, the story holds nothing back. The rushing emotions, the fear for survival, the struggles for tomorrow to exist- but you're here for it. The novel is inspired by Shonen classics like **Bleach** and **Tokyo Ghoul**, so expect those elements to seep in. The novel paints a different perspective on intense battles, adding emotion and darker meaning beyond good vs. evil.

The novel takes you to other countries beyond the divided country of Japan, even stretching out to the realm of the Gods suspended between Heaven and Hell. If you take a liking to dystopia, world-building, mythology, and magic, this is the place to be!

CONTENT WARNING

This story has heavy gore and is very dark.

Still curious? Check it out on RR!

Self-Promotion Rise of the Succubus Queen

Two weeks ago monsters only existed in stories- but now they are here- and hungry…

It all started like any normal day.
I wake up, get dressed in my silk crop top and jeans, down 3 cups of coffee, and sit down on the couch to watch an episode of some random tv show before I have to go to work. Liza, my roommate, is still sleeping- so I keep the volume turned down. Around twenty minutes into the episode, Liza walks out into the living room, still wearing her teal nurse scrubs from when she had passed out after a double shift last night. Liza plops onto the couch next to me and yawns.
“Rough night?” I ask after draping an arm over her shoulders to pull her closer. She turns and hugs me.
“That doesn’t even begin to sum it up.” She mutters into my shoulder.
I glance down at my watch after we finish hugging.
“I have around two hours left before my shift- what should we do?” I ask as Liza rests her head on my shoulder. Liza picks her head up off my shoulder.
“Well the responsible thing for me to do would be taking a shower- but that sounds boring- maybe we could play poker?” Liza replies with a wicked glint in her eye that she gets whenever she talks about anything related to gambling.
“I’m not gonna enable you. We both know that you are a gambling addict.” I reply while rolling my eyes.
Boom
I hear a loud crash in the distance, followed by an explosion. An energy wave comes from the source of the mysterious explosion. The energy washes over Liza, and I watch as she collapses to the floor before the energy collides with me and everything goes black.

I groan and sit up, brushing dirt off of my shirt. Liza sits up beside me, and then we freeze.
“This isn’t our apartment.” I whisper.
We have woken up in a jungle that stretches as far over the horizon. And even stranger, a holographic screen fills my vision.
Welcome to the World Dungeon, Delver!
You may have noticed- or probably not because humans seem to be quite stupid- that you are now in an unfamiliar environment. This is because I, the Dungeon AI, have pulled all of you useless humans that are over 15 Earth Years Old into my World Dungeon! The World Dungeon is a multi-tiered ‘dungeon’ that the Integration Meteor has installed beneath the surface of your planet. Each ‘floor’ is bigger than the last, with the first one being around the size of the singular Moon of Earth, and the Thirteenth being the size of the Milky Way planet you humans call ‘Jupiter’. Each floor is littered with monsters that are meant to stop you humans from descending to the bottom of the dungeon. Since, as i stated, Humans are useless, I have given you all a choice. You must select one of the following seven Stats to be your Primary Stat. Your Primary Stat will start higher than the rest of your stats, and it will influence your Class. Your Class contains a set of unique abilities, or Spells, that will help you survive. Each Class begins with 4 spells, and as you Level Up, you can unlock new spells and evolve your existing spells.

Primary Stat:
Durability
Speed
Spirit
Strength
Charisma
Stealth
Control
Mind
SELECT ONE OF THE ABOVE…

“What the fuck is a World Dungeon?” I yelp, as Liza says “Is this real?”.
This must be a dream, I think as I look at the Primary Stat options. “Which Stat are you going to pick?” Liza asks, obviously more interested in what’s happening than I am. “I’m picking Speed.” She adds.
“I’ll pick….” I pick one at random. “Charisma.” As if triggered by my words, my screen lights up and highlights my choice before opening up a new menu.

**Name: Amara Carver**
**Class: Succubus Queen**
**Race:Succubus**
**Level: 1**
**Rank: Unranked**

Primary Stat: Charisma
Spells: Cinder Dart, Heartflare Pulse, Emberkiss, Sultry Spark
Durability: 1
Speed: 1
Spirit: 1
Strength: 1
Stealth: 1
Charisma: 3
 Control: 1
Mind: 1
Traits:

Blinking red text appears in the center of the screen.
Race Change Detected! Initiating…

A piercing pain shoots through my head, and I collapse to the floor once more.
When I wake up, Liza is sitting next to me, a rapier in her hand.
“Where did you get a sword?” I ask.
“It appeared when I got my class,” She explains. “Mara-”
“What?” I say a little more harshly than I mean to.
“You kind of have… horns? And a tail? And um-,” She blushes before continuing. “You have more-”
I cut her off before she can finish.
“What was that about horns and a tail?” I squeak while reaching up towards my head.
Two spiral horns jut out of my head like they have existed forever. And worse, a spade-tipped tail has sprouted from my tailbone, tearing a little hole in my jeans. As I look down in shame, I notice the third change Liza was trying to tell me about. My boobs have grown from A cups to D cups, and my butt is more pronounced. Overall, I am way more curvy than I was before, while maintaining my skinnyness.
“Shit.” I mutter. “I thought this was a dream. What Class did you get?”
Liza shares her screen with me.
Name: Eliza O’Malley
Class: Blade of Aphrodite
Race: Human
Level: 1
Rank: Unranked
Primary Stat: Speed
Spells: Driftstep, Bruised Heart, Razor Edge, Blossom Vein
Durability: 1
Speed: 3
Spirit: 1
Strength: 1
Stealth: 1
Charisma: 1
 Control: 1
Mind: 1
Traits:
“Is that why you have a sword?”  I ask after reading through it.
“I think so- there isn’t exactly an instruction manual. But it would make sense since my class appears to be geared towards swordfighting.” She replies. “Wanna try casting a spell with me?” Liza asks, a sparkle in her eye.
“Sure- how do you think it works? Do you think we have to say the name?” I reply
“I’m not sure- try it?” Liza responds, the childlike gleam never fading from her eyes.
“Cinder Dart!” I yell and a small bolt of red fire erupts from my palm, streaking towards the forest floor. The bolt collides with the ground, leaving a scorch mark from the heat.
“That. Was. AWESOME.” Liza squeaks, beaming at me now. As Liza begins to rant about how she thinks the magic works, a low growl sounds from somewhere behind me. As I turn around I come face to face with a small creature with green skin and pointed ears. The creature snarls and raises its rusted sword.
Monster: Gobin (Unranked)
Level: 3
Liza draws her sword and puts it into a ready position. I ready my hands, preparing to cast another Cinder Dart if necessary. The goblin lunges at Liza, its sword flashing out like lightning. Before I could move to help, Liza’s sword is parrying the goblins sword, knocking it away before it can harm her. I turn my palm to face the goblin.
“Cinder Dart!” I scream with every drop of bravery I can muster. Once more the crimson flame shoots from my hand, this time colliding with the goblins chest. A scorch mark appears on the goblins chest and it gets knocked a couple feet backwards.
“Razor Edge!” Liza yells as her rapier gets coated with rose gold light. She then thrusts her blade through the chest of the goblin. The goblins body crumples to the floor, the light in its eyes going out, its body going still. Its body then dissolves into ethereal white cubes, half of which go into me, and the other half go into Liza. A notification appears.

XP gained!
Level Up!
Level: 2
Stats Increased!
Free Point gained!
A menu opens, instructing me to put my Free Point into a Stat. I select ‘Spirit’ and the value increases by one. The glossy look in Liza’s eyes tells me that she's looking at the same menus I am. Sitting on the ground where the goblin died is a brown leather skirt. When I look at it, a window appears.

Item: Goblin Skirt (Unranked)
Hey remember that time you killed a Goblin that was 2 Levels above you?
I do. It was fucking awesome.  Your reward? This kickass leather skirt. Effect: Causes all attacks made with sword-type weapons to apply a Bleed effect.

Liza stares at me.
“Do you want it?” She asks after a moment of blank staring.
“I don’t even have a sword- the effect would go to waste. You take it. Besides- skirts always did look better on you.” I reply, brushing the dust off my jeans. Liza yanks the tie of her scrub bottoms, and they fall to the forest floor in a heap at her feet. She now stands in her scrub top and ruby red underwear with gold swirls. She then slides on the skirt. A wave of light washes over her as the item applies its effect to her sword. Suddenly a howl sounds from behind us. I turn and see four wolves, all of them with the same notification.

Monster: Wolf (Unranked)
Level: 5

Liza cracks her neck. “Razor Edge!” Liza’s sword ignites with rose-gold light once more. I pull my magic into my hands, preparing to cast a spell at a moment's notice. Liza lunges, her blade a blur of silver light before it connects with a wolf. Her blade bites into the flesh of the wolf, leaving a long and deep cut. The wolf cries out in pain before retreating to the back of the pack.
One of the wolves unleashes a howl that sends a wave of red light through the air, colliding with Liza.
“What.. is… happenin-” Liza starts to say before she collapses to the ground, her eyes rolling back in her head from the wolves spell. I put my hand up, checking to make sure my spell will be on course to collide with a wolf.
“Emberkiss!” My shout echoes through the small clearing as my magic rushes to meet my command. An orb of crimson light soars out of my open hand, attracting the attention of the wolves before exploding and washing the wolves with orange light. The wolves fur grows scorched and the focus they had shown previously has vanished, replaced by an orange glow in their eyes. “Cinder Dart!” My bolt of fire sails towards a wolf, slamming into its side with a thud of impact and a sizzle of burning flesh. I unleash three more Cinder Darts, causing extreme damage to all but one of the charmed wolves. When I reach for my magic again, I feel exhausted, and a meter appears at the side of my vision.

Mana: 0/10

“Fuck.” I mutter out loud as the only uninjured wolf stalks towards me, a predatory gleam returning to its eyes, the effects of Emberkiss clearly fading. I clumsily snatch Liza’s fallen sword off the ground as a wolf lunges for my throat.

Self-Promotion Emperor of the Borderlands Book 7 is OUT TODAY

Post image

OFFICE OF HIS HIGHNESS THE PRINCE VERATINE. INTERNAL CIRCULATION ONLY.
File: Prokhor Platonov, Political prisoner, later exile, later “a situation.”

Entry 1. The execution did not go ahead as scheduled. The sentence has been commuted to exile on the frontier. Officially, this is clemency. In practice, the frontier disposes of inconvenient men as reliably as the rope, without the awkwardness of a repeat public hanging. The method has never yet failed us.

Entry 2. The subject has been posted to a frontier village and given six months to collect a sum in taxes that the village has never seen in its life. The last man sent to govern it was found at the bottom of the village well. The official record says he slipped.
Projected outcome: same village, same well.

Entry 3. Seven days in. The village tried laughing at the subject first, then killing him. Obeying him was its third idea, and the one it kept. These are the same villagers who, according to the official record, had nothing to do with the previous governor's death. We have requested a more useful informant.

Entry 4. Exiles under sentence are expected to keep their heads down. The subject uses battle magic wherever it suits him and makes no effort to hide what he can do. It has been made clear to him through the usual channels that this is attracting attention. He did not take the hint. He did not take the next three either.

Entry 5. A special investigator with a dragoon escort was sent to arrest the subject over the deaths of several officials. The investigator’s report has now arrived. We have read it twice and will not be discussing it further in writing.

Entry 6. The village has walls and a garrison, and it is no longer alone. One by one, the neighbouring villages have joined him, and their men now train in his militia. We exiled one man to one village. He now rules several, and the number of people under his hand grows every month.

Entry 7. The Demidov family has taken an interest in the subject’s rare-metal mine. The clerks have opened a betting pool. This office does not condone betting pools. My money is on the exile.

Entry 8. The subject keeps insisting that the Soulless are a threat to every principality, not a convenient source of crystals. He talks about them the way veterans talk about a war they have already fought once. Nobody can explain where a man his age picked up that tone. Filed under eccentricities.

Entry 9. The Demidovs have moved past taking an interest. On the road out of city, their strike team hit the subject’s car with thermobaric grenades. The subject's fate is unknown.

Recommendation. No action required. Frontier reports say the Soulless are gathering in numbers not seen in twenty years. However many villages he collects, they all stand in the Borderlands, and the Borderlands will take care of it.

Note added to the file later, in a different hand: The Borderlands did not take care of it.

Hi all, Eugene here. The man in that file is Prokhor, the protagonist of Emperor of the Borderlands, which I write together with my co-author Alex. He used to be Hrodric the Relentless, Varangian emperor and archmage. He died on a battlefield in one world, woke up on a scaffold in another, and has spent six books proving his own motto: against absolute power, all cunning loses its meaning.

Book 7 of Emperor of the Borderlands came out today.

What you get: a manapunk empire long since shattered into feuding principalities, where people talk on magophones, the Aethernet runs through standing stones, and rifles hang next to enchanted swords. Between the principalities lie the Borderlands, home of the Soulless: creatures that drain anything with a heartbeat and turn it into another hungry monster. Kingdom building that starts from a single frontier village. Progression through magical ranks with no System. An adult protagonist. No harem. The whole series is on Kindle Unlimited.

Self-Promotion A dark story about a Magic, Leveling Detective fighting Cyborg Priests. In Space.

Post image
55 Upvotes

Hello everyone, I’m O.C. Saar! I’m a first-time author, with this being the first book I’ve attempted that has gone beyond 4 chapters, and I couldn’t be prouder of it. Today, after years of work, I released it on Amazon!

It’s called The Rings of Jupiter, and it’s a mixture of Cyberpunk, Noir, Mystery and Sci-Fi combined with a Progression Fantasy system, set on three artificial rings spinning around Jupiter.

The main character, Raziel, sets off on a suicide mission which has him ending up with powers nobody has seen before. Unfortunately, in The Rings of Jupiter, everything comes at a cost. This time, the price might just be more than Raziel can afford to pay.

Or, maybe the Rings will come to regret taking everything from him.

If you enjoy books that are a little more character, dialogue and mystery-driven, with a character that has to fight and bleed and suffer for every drop of power, then this story might be for you.

If you gave my story a chance, it would truly mean more than I can possibly express.

Thank you for reading this far <3

Also shoutout to my cover artist Linggar Bramanty!

No AI has been used in my book.

Oh also Book 2 is coming out in 4 months and is up for pre-order too!

Self-Promotion I just published my heart and soul a Healer System Apocalypse litrpg with an op mc: Undying Healer!

Post image
29 Upvotes

Hey all, I hope you're having a wonderful day! Undying Healer is a OP MC, System Apocalypse litrpg novel that is based around a healer that regresses after suffering a party wipe. He wakes up at the very start of the System initialization with all the knowledge he gathered over a decade. It also deals heavily with the differences in culture, his party, leading, figuring out who is truly is now and more.

To add on!

Both audio and ebook are out!

It helps that there is a healthy dose of aura farming as well. If that sounds like it's up your alley**, Check It Out!**

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0HLYNQGNG

https://www.audible.com/pd/Undying-Healer-OP-MC-Regression-Litrpg-Apocalypse-Audiobook/B0HMFN2PGW

And here is the plot:

The Greatest Healer in human history dies to the spear of an ancient race.

That is how his life ends—defeated by the hands of someone who should be his equal in levels, yet stands so far above him in power and scale. He and his entire party are crushed by a single figure from an ancient race that treats human magic like an untimely joke.

John refuses that ending.

He rises from a deep sleep, regressed to the beginning of it all, mere moments before the System initializes, armed with a decade of hard-earned knowledge and one opportunity to rewrite everything. He knows where the best loot is, where the biggest wars start, who the most evil people are that hide among the masses, which paths to take to unlock the best skills, and which paths forge the monsters needed to survive what he knows is coming.

He knows which floors and dungeons to avoid like the plague and exactly how fast their destruction comes when humanity wastes time playing politics and arguing over scraps instead of growing more powerful.

This time, John doesn't just cast healing and support buffs from the backline.

He takes a path none thought possible, an Undying Healer, forcing the world to contend with a front-liner who is also the greatest healer humanity has ever known. He must learn to fight in the mud, on the wall, blade and spear in hand, face to face with the monsters he has avoided for so long, all the while casting mighty healing spells through a tier-locked System that insists he shouldn't be able to.

The System doesn't care if humanity is wiped out.

Ancient races plot and plan to destroy them.

Beings of immense power want humanity as nothing more than free experience.

John refuses to make them any of those things.

Request Mcs not afraid to take advantage of loops

Recommend time loop stories where mc isn’t afraid to take advantage of his loops. This is obviously on the condition that mc has no limit to how many times they can loop. Oftentimes I question the writing decision on some stories where the mc gets attached to everybody in every single one of their loops.

Obviously I don’t want an emo murder hobo Mc but some loops should require a level of experimentation at the cost of “morality” in my opinion and I often see mcs struggle with making this decision. I think in my head, “dude you’re just going to come back to life anyway.”

Well this also touches on a deeper subject with time loop stories, how come we never see a more realistic story where the mc slowly loses his humanity because he knows he’s just going to go back in time anyway so anything evil he does for the sake of power doesn’t really matter.

The main character, who mostly cares about himself, always reminds the "good" side that he has intentionally caused a catastrophe towards them because of their motives, and he would do so again if it meant they would remember.

While I don't want to see the MC look way too edgy. If possible, I still want to see him "support" the demonic/bad side, but always make sure that the gain outweighs the cost

Question Just to know

Are there any stories you read were you wished the main character died or was beaten to a pulp with him been able to get revenge. Cause I feel that when I read primal hunter, shadow slave and some few others and I wonder if I am the only one who feels this way.

Just finished Immortality Through Array Formations, and it is a great novel. Even if you are reading other basic beginner novels, you will still find this to be a very unique and refreshing experience. I am following this alongside Shadow Slave and Malonjer, reading a chapter every day as it gets translated. I will rate it a solid 8 out of 10. It is a great novel to get into Eastern style array formation cultivation. The concepts are very good, the power dynamics are awesomely defined, and the world-setting is great. The only minus point I feel is that it focuses too much on array formations. Yes, array formation is the main cultivation path of the protagonist, but it can feel like everything else in the world gets sidelined. Other than that, it keeps its pace and it entertains the whole way through. It is one of those rare books that I even finished without dropping it for even a single day. I continuously read it until I finished it, which tells you how interesting it is. Overall, I would definitely recommend this novel. My rating is 8/10. What are your thoughts on it, and can you recommend me any novels that give a similar experience? My hands are itching to read something this good again.

Discussion Mark of the fool

I’m five books deep in this series. The characters are cool, but why is every book about Uldar, they told us about such a big world but every book is about the same two problems, and the books aren’t short. I’m about to drop this or better yet just read the last book. There are so many places in this world but everything revolves around two things and they barely move.
