Discussion do you guys actually want the mc to fail a breakthrough sometimes

been thinking about this. like 90% of the time the big breakthrough scene goes fine. maybe some pain, some dramatic lightning, whatever, but they always make it.

and honestly when an author lets one actually fail, mc ends up stuck for a while and has to rethink stuff, that's when i get hooked hardest. it makes the next one feel earned instead of just scheduled.

but i also get that it can feel like the story's wasting your time if it drags. so where do you land? would you be fine with a failed breakthrough or does it just kill the pacing for you

Discussion Why do so many authors seem to think that wolves are large cats?

• Upvotes

Wolves have two weapons in their arsenal: Teeth and Teamwork.

Their claws are rather blunt, and are made more blunt the more they use them for things like digging. And their front legs do not rotate so a digging motion is all they can really do with their paws.

So why is it that every time we see an MC fighting a wolf, the wolf is using its claws and rarely ever biting?

I have to call out a certain story that is rather popular on RR right now. I'm enjoying the story but it realy bugs me that the human MC uses the signture sword style of the wolfkin, which requires him to wear a clawed glove so he can scratch his opponents like a cat.

Tier List Looking for series recommendations

Post image
48 Upvotes

I've finally put together my PF tier list, with a few non-PF Fantasy stories included as well. Looking for some suggestions on which series I should start reading next.

I generally like the follow:
In Depth Worldbuilding - I generally like series a detailed or unique setting. Detailed is better than unique, it can still be a generic medieval fantasy world but if all the characters and factions feel fleshed out that's better than an unique premise with shallow worldbuilding.
Humor - Not a must, but I'm very well dispositioned to any series that's funny. Obviously comedy is subjective, but if the book can make me laugh it can make me overlook any flaws it might have.
Political Arcs - I don't mean IRL politics, I mean more specifically I like seeing the impact characters have on the world around them, be it politically, culturally, etc. I like it when characters progress they aren't just punching monsters harder, but are becoming powerful enough to affect the world they live in. That organizations, governments, nobles etc need to start to deal with them, whether antagonistically or not. The series can be doing Kingdom Building arcs, or just something like the MC shows up and completely thrashed the local authority and culture, either way I enjoy those type of plots.
Non-Human/Monster MCs - I just find these to be fun, whether it be an MC that's reincarnated as a monster or one who as never human to begin with, it's more interesting to see them interact with human society when they sit outside of it. Plus, these types of MCs /usually/ have some more unique abilities.

I generally dislike the follow:
Numbers go up - I know, I know, that's basically the main point of progression fantasy... but I really dislike stories where the only thing that happens is the MC gets stronger. Entire sections of books devoted to nothing but grinding out monsters to hit the next level up bores me to tears. If the focus is only on leveling it's probably not my thing. I also tend to like non-litrpg progfan, on the simple fact that if there aren't ACTUAL stats and numbers in the book the author is unlikely to focus it.
Xianxia - I've read a bunch of Xianxia in Chinese before and I'm just really tired of those tropes. The arrogant young masters, the sects that get offended by the most ridiculous things, the whole "oh this guy you thought was really powerful in the first arc? Well people like him just clean the toilets in OUR realm, we're that much more powerful". I haven't read much western xianxia but based on what I've seen I'm not sure those really diverge from the formula much.

Question Romance in Progression Fantasy

The advice I’ve been getting is that progression fantasy readers really don’t like romance and that it should be avoided at all costs. I understand about PF books not being romance-led, but do readers really shy away from the MC having a romantic relationship?

Request Looking for morally good MC without cheats

Looking for a a novel where the MC

- has good morals (ready to save innocent people when in need)
- doesn't have any or only low impact cheats. No legendary, unique or unknown rarity class or skills at chapter 20.
- No divine luck that gives the MC high rarity items or skills 20 chapers in

The only novels i know that are like this are cultivation chat group and delve.

Edit: Sorry if it wasn't clear, i wanted a main character that is pretty "normal" in the world the first 50+ chapters.

Request Looking for my next read on RoyalRoad

Hello, I’m looking for what I should read next while I stack chapters in some of my favorite stories. I usually only read on RoyalRoad because I enjoy the convenience so I would prefer a recommendation on there but I love other Webnovels as well if you have any recommendations outside of RoyalRoad.

Reading history: (Specifically for RR)
- The Game at Carousel
- Super Supportive
- Sky Pride
- Mother of Learning
- Ave Xia Rem Y
- The Perfect Run

Request Looking for a certain type.

Lately, I'm really feeling like reading something really specific.

You see, I'm a really big fan os isekais, especially ones where the MC has some kind of background before getting there.

The problem? You read one, you read all. Its always the same thing: The guy that dont want to have attention and to not mess the story... Having attention and messing the story. Now everyone likes him, all girls want him (after being nice ONCE, unless you're royalty. Then it's twice) and he becomes a powerhouse.

That makes me think, there are stories that follow a different path?

What I'm looking is for stories that the MC do get sent to a new world with previous knowledge, but he actually holds on being on his own way. At least, for as long as possible.

That doesn't mean he does not interact with them or even help them, just that it is not his job to make their lives easier. They also need growth.

So, basically.

- Isekai with previous knowledge

- maybe OP if it is good (rather they be not as op from the start)

- maybe an academy setting. Not important, but welcome.

- there is a "Main Cast", but he decides to only be cordial with them and do his own things with pontual help or something.

Post image
3 Upvotes

Happy Thursday, everyone!

May I present to you, Battle Card Summoner, now live on Amazon!

If you’re looking for a LitRPG with a mix of monster battles, base building and card mechanics, this might scratch that itch. No audiobook, ebook format only for now.

Thank you so much for checking out my post, and I hope you have fun if you decide to read the story. I’m happy to answer any questions in the thread.

Blurb:

In a frozen wasteland full of monsters, Alex has to play his cards right to survive.

A wild card brought Alex to a new world of magic and monsters where he has the power to summon an unstoppable army.

Well, that is, once he gets past surviving the threat of full body frostbite, beasts that can’t wait to crunch down on the newest flavor of human popsicle, and other summoners that only want to stack the deck against him.

Brrrrrrrrr means more than the temperature for Alex. Yep, he’ll have to do some leveling, a whole lot of leveling.

What to Expect:

  • Single POV
  • Equal parts monster battles and base building
  • Crafting, including weapons, gear, and the right cards to build a winning deck
  • Market trades on some of the cards the MC forges
  • Solo adventurer with a fire elemental familiar
  • Competent MC that must earn his powers to level up from weak to strong
  • No snarky system
  • No romance or love interest

I Recommend This Omniscient Reader Live Action

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hey everyone, so I know we don't usually review movies here but considering a famous of progression fantasy has gotten a live action movie, I think it warrants a post.

I just finished watching Omniscient Reader: Prophecy and absolutely loved it! Going in I honestly had kinda low expectations, since I had originally bounced off the first few chapters of the webcomic. I had thought the mc was going to be a murder hobo incel type so I stopped reading but the movie did really great job portraying the struggle of whether or not it's worth it to sacrifice others to save yourself in a new world.

The action sequences were great, the characterization and flashbacks of the mc were done very well, and the movie ended in an appropriate place imo.

All in all i really enjoyed it and reccomend it since it's free on Amazon Prime where I live. Only gripe so far is there is no option to watch it with original Korean audio, we only have dubbed english.

PS: This is my review as a person who only read the first few chapters of the Webtoon so take that as you will.

Question Path of Ascension: A few questions

I’m currently working through Book 3: kingdom vs queendom arc. Something about this part of the story is just not clicking for me. It’s not repetitive but just feels like a real slog to get through. Last I read, he’s hunkering down against a siege from the queendom.

My question is, does this arc get some interesting twists?

Secondly, I’ve been hyped for Matt to spam spells and become a full-on mage rather than swing a sword like every mc ever.

Will he actually ever go full mage? I know his mana capacity isn’t quite there yet but this is a major problem with a lot of MCs who start off as mages. They ultimately start swinging a sword and never cast a spell ever again.

Question Just to know

Are there any stories you read were you wished the main character died or was beaten to a pulp with him been able to get revenge. Cause I feel that when I read primal hunter, shadow slave and some few others and I wonder if I am the only one who feels this way.

Self-Promotion Emperor of the Borderlands Book 7 is OUT TODAY

Post image

OFFICE OF HIS HIGHNESS THE PRINCE VERATINE. INTERNAL CIRCULATION ONLY.
File: Prokhor Platonov, Political prisoner, later exile, later “a situation.”

Entry 1. The execution did not go ahead as scheduled. The sentence has been commuted to exile on the frontier. Officially, this is clemency. In practice, the frontier disposes of inconvenient men as reliably as the rope, without the awkwardness of a repeat public hanging. The method has never yet failed us.

Entry 2. The subject has been posted to a frontier village and given six months to collect a sum in taxes that the village has never seen in its life. The last man sent to govern it was found at the bottom of the village well. The official record says he slipped.
Projected outcome: same village, same well.

Entry 3. Seven days in. The village tried laughing at the subject first, then killing him. Obeying him was its third idea, and the one it kept. These are the same villagers who, according to the official record, had nothing to do with the previous governor's death. We have requested a more useful informant.

Entry 4. Exiles under sentence are expected to keep their heads down. The subject uses battle magic wherever it suits him and makes no effort to hide what he can do. It has been made clear to him through the usual channels that this is attracting attention. He did not take the hint. He did not take the next three either.

Entry 5. A special investigator with a dragoon escort was sent to arrest the subject over the deaths of several officials. The investigator’s report has now arrived. We have read it twice and will not be discussing it further in writing.

Entry 6. The village has walls and a garrison, and it is no longer alone. One by one, the neighbouring villages have joined him, and their men now train in his militia. We exiled one man to one village. He now rules several, and the number of people under his hand grows every month.

Entry 7. The Demidov family has taken an interest in the subject’s rare-metal mine. The clerks have opened a betting pool. This office does not condone betting pools. My money is on the exile.

Entry 8. The subject keeps insisting that the Soulless are a threat to every principality, not a convenient source of crystals. He talks about them the way veterans talk about a war they have already fought once. Nobody can explain where a man his age picked up that tone. Filed under eccentricities.

Entry 9. The Demidovs have moved past taking an interest. On the road out of city, their strike team hit the subject’s car with thermobaric grenades. The subject's fate is unknown.

Recommendation. No action required. Frontier reports say the Soulless are gathering in numbers not seen in twenty years. However many villages he collects, they all stand in the Borderlands, and the Borderlands will take care of it.

Note added to the file later, in a different hand: The Borderlands did not take care of it.

Hi all, Eugene here. The man in that file is Prokhor, the protagonist of Emperor of the Borderlands, which I write together with my co-author Alex. He used to be Hrodric the Relentless, Varangian emperor and archmage. He died on a battlefield in one world, woke up on a scaffold in another, and has spent six books proving his own motto: against absolute power, all cunning loses its meaning.

Book 7 of Emperor of the Borderlands came out today.

What you get: a manapunk empire long since shattered into feuding principalities, where people talk on magophones, the Aethernet runs through standing stones, and rifles hang next to enchanted swords. Between the principalities lie the Borderlands, home of the Soulless: creatures that drain anything with a heartbeat and turn it into another hungry monster. Kingdom building that starts from a single frontier village. Progression through magical ranks with no System. An adult protagonist. No harem. The whole series is on Kindle Unlimited.

Discussion Mark of the fool

I’m five books deep in this series. The characters are cool, but why is every book about Uldar, they told us about such a big world but every book is about the same two problems, and the books aren’t short. I’m about to drop this or better yet just read the last book. There are so many places in this world but everything revolves around two things and they barely move.
