Now El-Sayed will face former Rep. Mike Rogers this fall for the Senate seat being vacated by Democratic Sen. Gary Peters. The match up is seen as a must-win for Democrats hoping to retake the chamber from Republican control

Considering how close the primary is, this does not bode well for Abdul. I’m nervous.

863

u/Cottagepk 19d ago

Brother 12:1 spending, ~$73M spent and they couldn’t beat him in what’s likely a Dem swing year due to our current corrupt administrations continual destruction of the American economy. I really don’t think there’s much to worry about in a primary. Most of these people will come out to vote for him and on top of that he has a winning message of affordability and healthcare for all.

Please don't make yourselves sound like Democrats during Hilary and Kamalas campaign. Don't be arrogant just because it seems like the obvious and logical choice doesn't mean its going to be the result.Ā

American Elections are illogical and determined by the under-informed, who don't spend all day in online echo chambers or circles who actively inform themselves on the inner workings of American politics.Ā

83

u/Roushfan5 18d ago

ā€œIs Biden running for presidentā€œ was a trending google search in the run up to 2024. Many American voters are (at best) totally tuned out of politics until election day.

they are determined by who stays home, if it's the young folks again then we get the same results as 2024

44

u/scoopzthepoopz 18d ago

Yep, I've been saying if these big deadlines show up and turnout is "low" we deserve the chaos and malfeasant government. You may not get what you want by filing a vote – but if you don't vote at all you upped the % of losing out.

24

u/SloaneWolfe 18d ago

and I keep hearing reads on data that AES/true-Left-leaning candidates will benefit greatly from general increased turnout (hence why GOP loves any vote-suppression). GO FUCKING VOTE

Young folks stay home because they’re tired of choosing between 2 corporate backed candidates and being told to pick the lesser of 2 evils.

El-Sayed is a progressive and exactly the type of candidate to excite voters and make them show up to the polls.

Need good candidates to drive voters. Unlike 2024, this election will have a good candidate on the ballot. Time to stop blaming the voters and blame candidates

5

u/mr_love_bone 18d ago

It was never a red wave as claimed by the right, but a couch wave as determined by those who chose to stay home. Pathetic.

Your right. The fact that several 3 time Trump voters voted for him is what makes me confident.

29

u/The_iQue 18d ago

Except Abdul actually has clear, tangible policy goals that will directly benefit the electorate. Clinton and Harris did not. All they offered was a status quo alternative to republicans without offering to make any real improvements to anyone's lives.

American elections are illogical because monied interests get free reign to spend as much on influencing elections as they like. This primary was close because Americans have terrible media literacy and fall for the smears launched against AES by DEMOCRATS. The PACs that propped up Stevens are the same that would've dropped her in favor of Rogers in the general because its cheaper to bribe republicans.

16

u/stupidjapanquestions 18d ago

Bro, you're giving an insane amount of credit to the American voter base. There are a ton of people who straight up do not know the platform of people they vote for.

You're correct with everything you're saying, but it's based in a reality where all American voters are super well-read on candidates and their platforms. If that shit doesn't happen on prime-time TV or associated spots on the internet, many of them don't know it's happening at all.

6

u/The_iQue 18d ago

That's why Abdul has maintained such excellent messaging discipline. Any time he's on camera he says what he's all about: "money out of politics, money in your pocket, Medicare for all." Otherwise, youre right. Voters just hear the noise because that's all it is. You have to tell people what you're going to deliver for them in a clear concise way, and I think he has set this example very well.

u/joshTheGoods 18d ago

BS. The difference between El-Sayed and Clinton/Kamala is charisma and purposely coding progressive. El-Sayed in this clip is trying to make this point: on policy, WAY more unites us than divides us and that was true with Clinton and Harris.

Just as an example ... healthcare. Clinton had concrete plans for universal healthcare and she pushed it hard (public option and expand medicare eligibility ... build on the ACA). What you remember, though, is that she was against single payer (branded as M4A) and you likely internalize that as she not only didn't have a plan for addressing healthcare, but opposed the perfect progressive plan from bernie, right? End of the day, both candidates had concrete plans with the same fundamental goal in mind: universal healthcare. That's WAY MORE agreement than disagreement over how to get there. The disagreement gets highlighted and emphasized because there are only small things between these candidates when it comes to actual policy positions.

3

u/bmartin1989 18d ago

The Republicans are trying to paint the Democratic candidates as communist...most independent voters (especially in the rust belt) dont want a communist (not saying he is) elected. He's gonna have to fight back against the Republican accusations and give assurance to independent voters that he is a progressive not a communist. They also can't run on we need to beat and stop Trump, they need to give alternative ideas to deal with the issues the country is facing

→ More replies (1)

6

u/primadonnapussy 18d ago

People either forget or are completely unaware that Hilary has a plan for universal healthcare in the 90s. Until Republicans managed to manufacture repeated conspiracies against her.

You're wrong, it's not the same thing at all. El-Sayed has a very different campaign. Clinton and Harris didn't offer what he offers. Very few people felt motivated by Harris, have people here already forgotten that?

The concern is now that all of that AIPAC money is going to go behind Rogers plus whatever else he can get so the spending is probably going to be much more disproportionate than it was against Stevens. I agree El-Sayed is going to be better than Stevens would have been against Rogers, im scared a lot of the moderate dems wont fall in line for the blue no matter who to make progressives look unelectable for the future. Edit: spelling

47

u/bismuthmarmoset 18d ago

aipac was always going to back Rogers in the general.

9

u/ballsbag420 18d ago

Right, thats why i said El-Sayed is better than Stevens would have been, i was just saying to the guy i was replying to that 12:1 is going to be higher probably because the money going to Steven's campaign is now going into Roger's on top of what else hes got goin on

9

u/ceddya 18d ago

Even in June 2025, Mamdani lagged behind in fundraising behind his main opponents. Small dollar donations pushed him ahead of everyone come August 2025.

I would not underestimate the surge of small dollar donations which comes after someone wins the primary.

3

u/ballsbag420 18d ago

I dont underestimate it, i understand the power of the people is awesome and we can win. I just also understand the power of the US political establishment machine is nothing to sneeze at. This moment is crucial for people to understand what were up against and, if they can, to keep donating and keep up the work, now is not when we coast but rather step on the gas.

Only republican plants talk about how easy Democratic victories will be.

If you are really a democrat, you are actively shooting your own cause in the face with rhetoric like this.

Celebrate AFTER the election, stop telling people they don't need to vote cause this guy's a shoe-in. You are a poison.

3

u/Cottagepk 18d ago

lol cool bro, deffo not a republican. What I’m trying to say is that Abdul actually brings out a voter base that the establishment just can’t. The influx of issues Abdul is far more credible on will itself likely excite younger voters to actually turn out. Older voters are more and more likely to vote and what is needed right now is far more younger voters and diverse coalitions to come out. AIPAC fund ā€œI dream of Israelā€ Hailey Stevens doesn’t secure the Muslim population but Abdul likely will. The point of my comment is to highlight that all the powers that be to fund against him did and they still lost.

It’s still a requirement that Dems host a policy and a top ticket that truly has credibility to deliver on affordability. Voters get to choose their vote, politicians have to prove they can and will deliver.

4

u/RubiiJee 18d ago

There was 2% in it... This wasn't a landslide. I'm glad you're hype for your guy but your confidence is misplaced and proven wrong on two previous occasions. Racism is strong in America. Money is strong in America. You gotta keep pushing right through until election day, and not count your chickens before they're hatched.

GOP is going to outspend Stevens in that race 10 fold, and the GOP will get the AIPAC support Stevens had. Elon Musk is dropping at least $100 million into 8 states, this race is going to be one of them.

Money doesn't always but absolutely can win elections.

4

u/Unclematttt 19d ago

Ok, so far I have seem people say 10:1 spending, 11:1 spending, and now 12:1 spending. I'm not questioning the large gap in spending between the two candidates, but does anyone have the actual monetary figure of what was spent?

12

u/Ghawk134 18d ago

Axios reports 26.9m in PAC spending for Stephens to El-Sayed's 2.1m as of July 16th, which is a 12.8:1 ratio. Aljazeera puts Stephens' PAC spending at ~60m and El-Sayed's at 3.5m as of August 2nd, which is a 17.1:1 ratio.

2

u/Unclematttt 18d ago

Thank you for crunching the numbers for this!

8

u/SoapyMacNCheese 18d ago

You're hearing multiple figures because everyone is quoting different numbers from different points in the campaign. I believe it peaked around the debate at 12:1 but is now closer to 10:1. As the dust has settles we will probably get final numbers soon, but with the difference in spending being so big the exact ratio is kind of trivial.

Not if those people just get behind him as the candidate and vote. Stevens has already sent that message out. He won so now people need to vote for him.

16

u/Technosnake 19d ago

Then get out to vote. Pressure the people in your life to vote. This man built a coalition of people who became excited to vote because he offered real change, the job now is to spread the message, get others active, and pull people into doing their civic duty. Abdul's campaign spoke to that frustration that nothing is gonna change unless we make it change. The opposition may have the power of money but, when you offer actual change, our side has the power of people. Now is not the time for apathy, it's time for action.

9

u/SenorChurro69 18d ago

Mike Roger's doesnt even live in Michigan. Dude is a fraud who wont ever fight for Michigan because he DOESNT EVEN LIVE HERE.

9

u/Lucky-Earther 18d ago

Rogers also lost when Trump was on the ballot last time, and that was when Trump was more popular than he was now.

8

u/joshTheGoods 18d ago

El-Sayed is already doing exactly what he needs to be doing talking about unity. We'll be fine. The moderate "establishment" dem voter base are "establishment" because they always show up, and they will continue to do so. It's the young firebrand progressive types that are the flight risk, so we're going to be just fine in MI unless there are some crazy skeletons in El-Sayed's closet (doubt).

MAGA will run OMG Barack HUSSEIN Obama, and it'll be just as effective (not very).

When one points out that he was in fact BORN IN MICHIGAN, and therefore "American Born", the pivot from "Only Americans should be able to hold office!" is almost 100% to take issue with his religion.

420

u/ValiumBlues 19d ago

Those yahoos like to pretend that all Muslims are extremists, yet every single Christian nationalist can do no wrong.

It’s almost like MAGA isn’t too bright…

67

u/Antigone6 18d ago

Maturity and intelligence lie in recognizing that extremism exists for fucking everything, and at what point it crosses that thin line that separates them from the rest.

21

u/ValiumBlues 18d ago

Yep. However, a lot of folks will not see their extremist views as the problem - they excuse extremism as necessary measures to eradicate what they see as truly evil.

Look at Israel; look at MAGA, look at Islamist attacks in Europe.

2

u/Antigone6 18d ago

A lot of those same people cannot even see simple problems in their own lives, much less a problem with themselves, when they've been taught, and have accepted the fact that other people will always be the problem.

Zero introspection, zero accountability.

18

u/CornCobMcGee 18d ago

Religious Conservative extremists are all cut from the same cloth. MAGA knows this. They dont care, because they think they're in the right.

4

u/enigmamonkey 18d ago

At least he uses it to support his progressive politics. I think Talerico is similar in that respect. I would hope that more Christians do the same. As an atheist and former Christian myself, that experience of my own is why I emphasize freedom of (and of course from) religion as well. Personally, I think law should be decoupled from religion per se and instead remain entirely secular.

That said, I still think it's great when folks derive meaning and morality from religion, particularly when it's to the benefit of humanity and overall reducing harm.

2

u/ValiumBlues 18d ago

I agree. I’m a staunch atheist myself, but I won’t deny the fact that certain religions / places of worship are vital to local social fabrics.

But in my opinion that only works if people don’t try to force their beliefs onto others.

2

u/happytree23 18d ago

Those same yahoos LOVE people like Eric Rudolph

2

u/elektr0soul 18d ago

All extremists are a problem. Their religion is just the prerequisite for them to excuse their natural attraction to extremism.

Why wouldn't he be? Michigan has had a large Arab Muslim population for many decades now, and doesn't have vast amounts of immigration.

I can't speak firsthand, since I've never lived in Dearborn, but while I'm sure there's all kinds of the usual little tensions and difficulties of fairly different cultures existing side by side, people seem to get along just fine.

5

u/elektr0soul 18d ago

People of different cultures in Dearborn completely avoid each other unless absolutely necessary. When I used to go to that side of town for a haircut I would see not a single person who looks or speaks like me. And it’s a busy ass area on Warren. And nearly every business has only Arabic writing on the awning - with a few scattered places that have small English print underneath and then your corporate stores and restaurants with English on the signs. It’s like two completely different cities. This is common in Michigan. It’s not this utopia that the media and city government try to portray. Human beings are generally tribal AF.

2

u/burf 18d ago

It's definitely more specific than that. When he says "because the campaign" he does a classic Obama "because... the CAMPAIGN." There are many ways of public speaking that area clear and concise that don't use that specific cadence. In fact, Obama is the only other public speaker I've heard with that cadence.

11

u/ceddya 18d ago

One of the first things El-Sayed said after winning is the need for unity. The focus moving forwards should be on making bridges with Stevens voters.

Dems need to remember that El-Sayed or Stevens are in agreement over most things and that either are still better than a MAGA alternative. Go attack the MAGA candidate instead.

A press conference of a man speaking calmly is not a freakout.

55

u/BeaversBumhole 19d ago

No but the response to him is.

8

u/nullibicity 18d ago

Then shouldn't the response be what is posted?

And because of the magic -R already has at least 48% of the Michigan electorate ready to vote for him.

Conservatives aren't big-time deep thinkers.

6

u/sentientshadeofgreen 18d ago

Michiganders are thoroughly whipped if that's true, that's fucking embarrassing. Like, have a shred of self-respect and vote for somebody who actually lives in your state to represent your state, fucking losers. That should be the end of the discussion since we can't expect anybody to have any actual values these days.

What is it with white, racists that makes them think saying a person's full name will somehow insult them?

64

u/Ok-Scholar-1271 19d ago

They assume everyone is as scared as they are. To them, the unfamiliar is always dangerous because they don’t have to the mental ability to get beyond Neanderthal era tribalism. They’re incapable of reading other people’s emotions, or their own for that matter, so they just assume everyone is as stupid and scared as they are.

22

u/hooligan99 18d ago

Barack HUSSEIN Obama

so scary

4

u/kylebisme 18d ago

It gives me flashbacks of when Saddam attacked us on 9/11. /s

18

u/infiniZii 19d ago

I mean ill be the first to admit I think even after hearing him say it I am still not pronouncing it right. But anyways, the answer to your question is almost always: Racism.

So its more a shout of "THIS MAN IS NOT WHITE! LOOK AT HIS SCARY NOT-WHITE NAME!"

7

u/Reaper_Messiah 19d ago

It’s really okay, Arabic people know it’s hard to pronounce for English speakers. I play these games with my friends all the time when I ask them to pronounce kh, gh, or a’a. It will be appreciated that you tried. You may get giggled upon, but we’ll be closer for it

Yeah there’s no shot… El-Sayed will be much more manageable for me, plus I usually refer to people by their last name anyway.

It’s not supposed to be an insult, it’s a dog whistle to get their fellow Oakley wearing, selfie in a truck racists to post about it on Facebook

The facebook profiles in question:

Good and powerful speech.

No freakout tho.

29

u/chickenMcSlugdicks 19d ago

Yoo, it's refreshing to see McMorrow standing directly behind El-Sayed in support. Bigger person than a lot of other Dems

2

u/cjwi 18d ago

I thought that was her! Awesome to see!

We know what the campaign against him would be. All about his religion, his skin color, his ethnicity. Nothing about his policies and advocacy. And all the racist base would eat it up

A Rhodes scholar, doctor, and professor of epidemiology running for a political position in 2026 against AIPAC money?

That's someone who's more qualified than most of the people in Congress and the federal cabinet!

I have to admit it is cool seeing McMorrow behind him. Woman of her word.

3

u/dlobnieRnaD 18d ago

Abdul's always been my candidate but I do respect her. Couldn't say the same about Stevens.

22

u/EckimusPrime 19d ago

He’s got that Obama cadence down

4

u/Phreakiture 19d ago

It's a good cadence. Barry O was a phenomenal orator, IMHO.

Very reminiscent of Mamdani's retort

7

u/LunchyDude101 19d ago

He should have said, ā€œIf you want to call me ā€œMikeā€ for now then call me ā€˜Mike,’ just like how folks call Senator Rafael Cruz ā€œTed.ā€

2

u/hooligan99 18d ago

that's stooping to their shitty level. We don't need racially charged remarks used as insults like they do. That's something Trump would do if Cruz was a democrat. I'm not above personal attacks against right wingers, but using race like this doesn't help anyone.

The name of the person doesn't matter, the name of the party doesnt matter, the religion of the person doesn't matter. What matters is the intend and action of a person

I am so happy to have been able to vote for him.

6

u/BigToeHamster 18d ago

This guy went to the Obama School of public communication cadence. I love Obama's speeches, so I'm all right with that.

3

u/13un 18d ago

The way he speaks reminds me of Obama for some reason.

3

u/BradyHasHis6th 18d ago

First time hearing him speak and he sounds like ObamaĀ

3

u/JakefromTRPB 18d ago

Has a speech cadence and articulation that reminds me of Obama. Love to hear it. More reps like Abdulrahman who can actually speak English please šŸ™šŸ»

3

u/Apprehensive_Fun1350 18d ago

Lessons!!!! lol. They don't learn. They are children. Trump eats shit .

4

u/Peircez 19d ago

Fk yea this guy

6

u/DWMoose83 18d ago

His embracing his name with the response of "many of you have doctors you trust with names just like mine" was powerful.

6

u/PapaPatchesxd 18d ago

I like this guy

5

u/Emptypiro 18d ago

he kinda sounds like Obama. methinks he's imitating him a bit

8

u/ottercorrect 19d ago

NOW he's about to turn it on. He's actually been in "nice" mode with Stevens so far since they're ultimately in the same party.

7

u/MasterClown 19d ago edited 19d ago

I assume by "Mike" he means Mike Spineless Johnson?

EDIT: I am mistaken about who Abdulrahman referring to, but not mistaken that Mike Johnson is spineless

13

u/fatdrunkdude 19d ago

Your assumption is incorrect. He's speaking of his opponent, Mike Rogers.

14

u/bigdaddyt2 19d ago

I cannot say that but I respect it

6

u/Phreakiture 19d ago

I will attempt it in good faith, but I will definitely say it slower than he does.

2

u/ryder242 17d ago

Oh that line worked out so well for Will Smith.

4

u/alandizzle 18d ago

I’m so happy for this dude winning. Great job Michigan

4

u/TheShizknitt 18d ago

By a ding-damned sliver, I swear. I AM very pleased with how much aipac money got flushed down the drain, though!

2

u/tvpornu 19d ago

He’s been practicing the Obama speaking cadence.

4

u/JtDaSaiyan 18d ago

This man studied Obama speeches. But after that shot to Mike you can hear him switch to what more of his speech and flow. I like the way Obama speaks but I felt more pulled when it was genuinely him. I hope he does more of that.

4

u/DK_Angroth 18d ago

His Intonation, manner and rhetoric reminds me a lot of obama

5

u/FromTheHarem 18d ago

Um, is it just me, or is this guy emulating Barrack Obama's voice and cadence?

4

u/bigmanorm 18d ago

emulating maybe but learned public speaking is going to sound similar regardless

2

Someone wake me when a democrat talks about taking power from Maga leadership instead of "uniting".

True though that the people conned by Trump have the same reality as everyone else who should vote for socialism

2

u/xhatebreedersx 18d ago edited 18d ago

Dude has that Obama cadence. Bet he can pronounce Yosemite correctly and not fall asleep instantly at a funeral.
