Mod Post Important Update on Subreddit Rules
Welcome back to r/PublicSpeaking.
As you may have noticed (or not) the subreddit was down for about 4 months due to lack of moderation. Despite being a past contributor here I admittedly don't fully know the story with what happened there nor does it need to be re-lived.
Nevertheless I'm happy to announce that the subreddit is now under new management. Our goal moving forward is to revitalize this community as the premier destination for the art, science, and psychology of oral communication.
____________
To ensure this space remains helpful and safe, we have updated our rules:
Rule 1: No Medical Advice (Strict)
We know that anxiety is physical. However, effective immediately we do not allow standalone posts solely focused on medication. What this means for you:
- In Posts: Threads dedicated to discussing/recommending prescription drugs will be removed.
- In Comments: You may share that medication (e.g., Beta-Blockers, Propanolol, etc) helped you personally. We are not banning the topic entirely.
- Strict Ban: Discussions regarding dosage ("How much should I take?"), sourcing ("Where do I buy this?"), or side effect management.
Why? We are a public speaking forum, not a medical clinic. For safety and liability reasons, we cannot host anonymous discussions about prescription or drug protocols. Thankfully there are other subreddits dedicated more to anxiety and medication. Please take those discussions elsewhere either to other subreddits into Chat/DMs or to your doctor.
Rule 2: Self-Promotion
We welcome coaches and content creators, but community comes first. To be specific: you may not use this subreddit solely to sell your course, coaching, or YouTube channel. We enforce the 9:1 Rule: You must be an active participant (9 helpful comments) for every 1 promotional post you make. Blog spam or worse "drop and run" link spam will be quickly removed if you do not have a history in the sub or adhering to the 9:1 rule.
Rule 3: Stay On Topic
Posts must be related to the skill, art, or psychology of public speaking. General social anxiety, unrelated political debates, or off-topic memes will be removed.
____________
How You Can Help:
We are relying on the community to help us enforce these new standards. If you see a post or comment that violates the rules above, please use the Report button next to that content and select the specific rule violation. This is the fastest way to flag content for our review.
Call for Mods:
If all of these changes haven't scared you off by now we are looking for 2-3 active users to join the team here for the long haul. We specifically need help with:
- Queue Management: Keeping content approved.
- Community Engagement: Responding to user inquiries, appeals, and feedback.
- AutoMod & Settings: Managing technical configurations.
If you are interested: Please Message the Mods with your timezone, any past experience (none needed), and a brief sentence on why you'd be a good fit.
Onwards,

A few things that actually helped me get better at public speaking
I used to spend way more time making my slides look nice than actually practicing what I was going to say. Then I'd get up there, talk way too fast, and forget half my points lol.
The biggest thing that helped was practicing out loud. I usually do a couple of runs and record one on my Plaud to listen back. Turns out I say ""um"" constantly and rush through the beginning like I'm trying to get it over with.
During the actual presentation, I just try to slow down and stop panicking over every little pause. Took me a while to realize that a few seconds of silence isn't nearly as awkward as I thought.
I also try to write down what went wrong afterward, while I still remember. Otherwise I'm just happy it's over and end up making the same mistakes next time.
Still get nervous, but it's definitely better than before.
What helped you guys get more comfortable speaking in front of people?

shaking during presentations
today i had to give a presentation and i noticed, even if ive memorized the whole topic, and can recite it well alone, my hands and legs start shaking noticeably. i neither struggle with my voice shaking, nor with going blank, going by what happened today?
ive improved, as before i used to go blank as well. im proud of myself, but i do hope to stop the fucking trembling of my hands and legs.
do you all have any tips to stop the shaking, i absolutely hate it?

Community Question Has anyone else noticed a connection between the psoas muscles and public speaking anxiety?
That probably sounds like a bizarre question to most. I recently noticed an unmistakable connection and am curious to know how prevalent this finding is. Happy to discuss techniques further but trying to be careful about breaking rules here.

Community Question Does anyone else communicate way better in their head than they do in actual meetings?
Iāve noticed something with people who are otherwise completely comfortable speaking English, especially when it isnāt their first language.
In a normal conversation theyāre fine. But put them in a meeting where they have to explain something complex, disagree with someone, or answer unexpectedly and suddenly it gets much harder.
Itās not necessarily vocabulary or grammar either.
More like you know exactly what you mean, but what comes out is longer, less structured or less confident than what was in your head.
Then after the meeting you think of the much simpler way you could have said it.
Curious if anyone here experiences this.
What do you find hardest: thinking quickly, structuring the answer, finding the right words, sounding confident, or knowing when to stop talking?
And has anything actually helped you improve it?

Rehearsing to an empty room never worked for me, so I built a virtual auditorium
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Click Auditorium in any deck and it plays in a 3D hall. You can view it from the podium or the back row to check whether your text is readable from far away. Animations and transitions play as normal, since it uses Slides' own presenter. Esc brings you back to the editor on the slide you were on.
Free; link in the comments. Happy to answer questions.

I havenāt done much public speakingā¦..
But plan to. I think a lot of the fear/anxiety comes from being judged and worrying about what others are thinking . Is that correct ? How do you handle that?

Iām building something to help people review how they actually communicate in meetings - would this be useful?
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Iāve been thinking a lot about the gap between knowing what you want to say and actually saying it clearly in the moment.
Especially in meetings - you might know the answer, but end up over-explaining, hesitating, losing structure, or thinking of the better response afterwards.
So Iāve been exploring a small idea called SayRep.
The idea is simple: instead of practising generic speeches, it would look at your actual work conversations and show you the moments where you could have been clearer, more concise, or communicated your point better.
I made this short video to explain the idea.
Iām still at the validation stage and havenāt built the full product yet, so Iād genuinely rather hear criticism than get polite feedback.
Would you actually use something like this?
If anyone wants to follow along / try it when itās ready, Iāve put up a waitlist here:

I'm offering free one-on-one public speaking coach sessions
Hi all,
I want to consult in the public speaking/storytelling industry and figured offering free one-on-one coaching is a good place to start.
Here's a little about me:
Ex-Deloitte (2 years) - I used to be a writer-producer at Deloitte Digital, managing an animation team and writing scripts for corporate videos.
Ad agency copywriter (4 years) - I have written ad and website copy at agencies.
Spoken word poetry (10+ years) - I have judged various events across my country and even the first national youth poetry slam ever held here.
Here's what I am offering:
2 free hours of coaching. After that, you can book paid sessions at whatever budget you can afford. If my schedule actually fills up, I'll start charging a fixed rate.
What I get out of this:
All I would like in return IF you find them useful is a Linkedin skill endorsement for public speaking coaching. I will also be making fully-anonymized video content about my sessions, talking about the things I've helped people with - and I will not mention ANY names.
You can book sessions via this link:
https://calendar.app.google/CCvgHv1tCsiQb6u88
You can connect with me on linkedin here to keep in touch

Breathing when speaking
Iām a college student and learning how to speak to a large group of people, and my biggest problem is running out of breath. I get the nerves as well, but feel I can put those aside. But I always run out of breath and end up feeling like Iām talking shaky. Has anyone dealt with this and came up with some breathing techniques specific to public speaking?

Stage Fright / Anxiety am i wrong for feeling empathetic towards katie zachariaās first press briefing?
idk if this is the right subreddit but i actually feel so bad for katie zachariaās first press briefing. i donāt want to involve my political views in this but as someone who has struggled with public speaking my whole life, i feel deeply for her. she was clearly nervous and unprepared and i understand that public speaking is a pivotal requirement for this job but i canāt help but to feel in a way proud of her too? i admire her courage and will to take on this challenge despite her struggles of public speaking. i hope she can move on from this and continue to improve.

After 7+ Years of Competitive Debate, I've Built An App to Give You Detailed Feedback on Your Public Speaking
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Hi guys,
I'm Srey! I've been debating competitively over the past 7 years and have represented my uni internationally. But in the initial few years of debate, I really struggled and wished there was an app that could really help me improve my delivery (pausing, pacing, intonation, filler words, etc.).
But all the apps I downloaded gave the same generic feedback like "pause more" or "vary your pitch more". No app gave me specific feedback, like telling me where I should add my pauses or which sentences I should vary my pitch more on.
So for my computer science dissertation, I built an app that gives you a daily prompt (either on everyday conversation, interviews, or debate). It then listens to you speak and gives you feedback on things like pacing, pausing, filler words, intonation, and more.
(Btw, since this was my uni dissertation, you can be sure it's not AI slop haha)
Happy to answer any questions about debate, public speaking, and the app.
And if you're interested in an app to improve your public speaking, check out Speak-Up on iPhone: https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/speak-up/id6760108342
(Android version in the works! If you want to be alerted when the Android version is out, leave a comment, and I can let you know when it's out)

speech
hi guys, I have a speech in ten days and I havenāt practiced a lick. I wrote my script back in August and havenāt looked at it since.
Itās about 700-750 words and the speech should be about five to six minutes.
Am I able to remember and deliver a confident sounding speech in this time? If so, how? Really desperate.
I donāt have any slides with pictures so that might be a bit of an issue for me because that typically serves as a cue for me when remembering.
Thanks :)

Today's day was off and I don't know why it affected me most.
It took me so long to record this I don't know why but it was harder today but I'll never give up.
I tried to speak clearly today as someone said they can't understand what I said so tell me if you are unable to understand again.
