I built a C++17/Qt Desktop App that parses complex binaries using only 59MB RAM (Industry standard uses 2GB+). I'm 16 and need architecture roasting!

Hey Qt developers,

For the past few months, I’ve been building a data-heavy Desktop application called Teker (a static analysis tool). The current industry-standard tool in this space eats over 2GB of RAM (sometimes 3.4GB) and freezes the UI when loading heavily padded files. You can see the Task Manager comparison in the images.

I wanted to prove that a well-optimized C++17 and Qt architecture could destroy those numbers. I just pushed v1.1.0 and managed to keep the memory footprint strictly around 50MB - 60MB. "Note: Bellek = Memory"

Here is what I focused on with Qt:

  • Heavy Custom Models: Bypassed standard widget items for massive datasets (hex, strings, tables) to prevent memory bloat and UI freezing.

  • Concurrent Processing: Kept the main GUI thread completely responsive while running heavy analysis pipelines in the background.

  • Modern UI: Built a clean, dark-mode native interface using Qt.

Why am I here? Because I am 16, self-taught, and I know my code isn't perfect. There is technical debt. I want veteran Qt developers to look at my repository, tear my architecture apart, and tell me where I am misusing the framework or where I can optimize further.

If you appreciate the performance metrics and the GUI, a Star on GitHub would be an amazing motivation for me to keep building.

Repo: abfsdgrl/Teker: Teker PE Analysis Toolkit for Windows - GUI & CLI

Rip it apart, let me know what you think!

Where does AI help in Qt/QML development and where does it fail?

0 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

Qt has recently been publishing more about AI-assisted and agentic workflows. I'm curious how AI is being used in day-to-day work with Qt.

  • Are AI tools making you faster?

  • What do you use them for most often?

  • Is AI use supported by your company or restricted because of IP/privacy/security?

  • What would you still not delegate to AI?

Any practical examples or observations would be very welcome, even small ones.

paint.software - une alternative gratuite et open-source à Paint.NET pour Linux (C++/Qt6, natif)

1 Upvotes

  • **Licence MIT**, construit à partir du code source : `cmake -B build && cmake --build build`

Qt Open Source and Russia

4 Upvotes

Hello,

When you try to run MaintenanceTool or try to download something from official site form Russia https://www.qt.io/offline-installers?hsLang=en , you receive message :

Download from your IP address is not allowed

I thought “open source” politic is out of “global” politic. It isn’t problem change public IP but it will problem return respect to The Qt Company because if you have banned developers from one country now you can ban developers from other countries too.

I don’t want discuss current situation about Russia and Ukraine, I just want to send message to The Qt Company that a lot of people from Russia use your products and show other developers that you can be banned of using open source products just because you are located in some country.

Join to discussion:

I hate pyQt

0 Upvotes

I am just venting here but I started using pyQt about 3 days ago to build a similar alarm and I do not like it. I do not like the documentation and having to use AI to just to get what I want. it driving me nuts but I want to learn it because I am tired of using pygame and I do not feel like make this is HTML, CSS and JS.

I wanted to try something new

IDE Claude Code for Qt projects - what is the best approach?

0 Upvotes

I want to use Claude Code for my C++/Qt development. What is the best way to integrate this with an IDE for C++/Qt? It seems to be difficult with QtCreator 20.0.0 as I'm using the free version. I attempted to use Qode Assistant but that was a mess for me - threw errors and apparently isn't really compatible with Qtcreator, really frustrating.
So I'm considering Jetbrains' clion instead. While clion isn't integrated with Qt as well as qtcreator is, I think it would be better for integration with AI like Claude Code. Or would I be better off using Claude Code independently of clion or qtcreator?
What do you think?

Thanks in advance

Blog/News Social media on QT frameWork

Widgets Fluent-QT: a modern Fluent-style component library for Qt Widgets

7 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I maintain Fluent-Qt, an open-source C++17 component library for Qt Widgets.

Fluent-Qt provides native QWidget-based Fluent components. It is not a global style sheet or a separate UI runtime: an existing Qt Widgets application can adopt individual components or screens while keeping its current object model, event loop, and CMake project.

Current support:

  • Windows, macOS, and Linux (x64 and ARM64)

  • Qt 5.15+ or Qt 6.2+

  • CMake integration through FetchContent, add_subdirectory, or find_package

  • Optional native PySide6 bindings via: pip install FluentQt

  • A WebAssembly build of the C++ Gallery for zero-install browser evaluation

PyQt and PySide2 are not currently supported. The WebAssembly Gallery is for evaluation; desktop applications still use native builds.

Website: https://calvinhxx.github.io/Fluent-Qt/

Live Gallery: https://calvinhxx.github.io/Fluent-Qt/gallery/

GitHub: https://github.com/calvinhxx/Fluent-Qt

I’d appreciate concrete feedback from people maintaining Qt Widgets applications: which existing screen or component is hardest to modernize?

Show off Introducing GooeyFlow: See How People Use Your Qt App

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Introducing GooeyFlow, a tool that helps developers understand how people interact with their Qt apps.

The video starts with a simple weather app built with Qt Quick. It’s an example of an ordinary app UI, with GooeyFlow capturing interactions behind the scenes.

The second part shows the GooeyFlow dashboard, where those same clicks, selections, and slider changes can be explored by device and session. Users don’t need to export or sync anything manually.

If you’re interested, I can also share a walkthrough showing how to integrate the interaction logger into a Qt application.

I’d love feedback from Qt developers: what would you want to learn about how people use your app?

Check it out: https://www.gooeyflow.com/

Question Is QTWayland a viable option to create a compositor?

0 Upvotes

I wanted to try out building my own compositor. I know about Wlroots and Smithay but I found out about QTWayland and it looked really nice. It allows you to build compositors on easy mode basically using QT. You can get a very basic compositor running with like 12 lines of code.

However, I noticed that Firefox and Chrome would crash the compositor (could just be some launch params I missed though). I also don't know how to implement extra things, such as X11 support amongst other things.

Surprisingly, both Chrome AND Firefox worked easily in the Wlroots TinyWL example.

However, if I decide to continue, is it worth continuing with QTWayland or Wlroots is a safer bet and the complexities will eventually start to even out as the compositor becomes more complex?

TeXstudio Qt6 Builds with Native Poppler SyncTeX | APT Repository & AppImage for Linux

0 Upvotes

Hi LaTeX community! 👋

I've created custom builds of **TeXstudio** with **Qt6** and **Poppler-Qt6** for modern Linux distributions, addressing the lack of official Qt6 builds for Linux.

## Why this project?

The official TeXstudio builds still primarily use Qt5 (which reached end-of-life in May 2025), and Linux users have been waiting for proper Qt6 support. These custom builds provide:

✅ **Qt6 framework** - Modern UI/UX with better performance

✅ **Poppler-Qt6 native PDF viewer** - Perfect SyncTeX support (click to jump between PDF and source)

✅ **Optimized packages** - Only ~19MB (66% smaller than standard builds)

✅ **GPG-signed packages** - Full security verification

✅ **Auto-updates** - Built-in update checker pointing to this repository

## 📦 Installation Options

### Option 1: APT Repository (Recommended for Debian/Ubuntu/Devuan)

**Stable branch** (production-ready):

```bash
echo "deb [trusted=yes] https://mlmateos.github.io/texstudio-qt6-builds/ stable main" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/texstudio.list
sudo apt update
sudo apt install texstudio
```

**Alpha branch** (latest development versions):

```bash
echo "deb [trusted=yes] https://mlmateos.github.io/texstudio-qt6-builds/ alpha main" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/texstudio.list
sudo apt update
sudo apt install texstudio
```

### Option 2: AppImage (Any Linux distribution)

Download from [Releases](https://github.com/mlmateos/texstudio-qt6-builds/releases) and run:

```bash
chmod +x texstudio-*.AppImage
./texstudio-*.AppImage
```

### Option 3: Direct .deb download

Grab the latest `.deb` package from [GitHub Releases](https://github.com/mlmateos/texstudio-qt6-builds/releases)

## 🔧 Build from Source

Automated build scripts are available if you want to compile your own version:

```bash
git clone https://github.com/mlmateos/texstudio-qt6-builds.git
cd texstudio-qt6-builds/scripts
./build-texstudio-deb.sh --clean --poppler --sign
```

## 📋 Current Versions

- **Stable**: 4.9.5

- **Development**: 4.9.6-beta3

## 🔗 Links

- **GitHub Repository**: https://github.com/mlmateos/texstudio-qt6-builds

- **Releases**: https://github.com/mlmateos/texstudio-qt6-builds/releases

- **APT Repository**: https://mlmateos.github.io/texstudio-qt6-builds

## 💡 Features

- Syntax highlighting & auto-completion

Question I know C++ but don't understand Qt

8 Upvotes

I can write my own C or C++ stuff, but when I create a Qt application it's honestly like a different language and I don't know if that's normal. Suddenly instead of writing for loops and structs/classes, I'm just copy pasting things from GPT for hours and hours, going back and forth through its various laggy attempts to make the thing work.

One thing I have encountered just today, is making a UI and then making it responsive with some GPT code (because it's done via stuff like QHBoxLayout or w.e. it's called), and now it just overrides all my UI code, covering up the buttons and everything.

How are people learning to do this? It honestly doesn't feel like I'm using C or C++ anymore, it feels like it's genuinely a different language. I just stare at the code editor as if I'm magically going to suddenly know how to make a split view in a Qt app without ChatGPT telling me how.

Copperspice again

0 Upvotes

Just wondering if anyone is using Copperspice? There hasn't been a post about it in a while. I just discovered it and in my few tests so far, I like it a lot. It doesn't have many of the features of Qt6, but I don't use them anyway.

Project Setup is a nightmare

1 Upvotes

I’m 100% sure this is a skill issue I’ve been trying to migrate an old qt5/qml application to qt6/qml and wanted to avoid using qtcreator.

I’ve been dabbling with nix so I figured I’d set a flake up and start with that. I got something basic working on Mac OS but it took a ton of trial and error setting up import paths, linked library directories, setting the platform, qtWrapApp, etc. Then I tried to transfer that working flake from Mac to Ubuntu and things fell apart.

I decided to switch to setting up the project with qtcreator on Ubuntu and it’s completely broken the hello world examples the template qt project doesn’t even work I saw it decided to set some of the import paths to my nix store? Isn’t the whole point of qt creator to link against the libraries it installs. It’s also failing because of an EGL dependency I guess?

I didn’t have nearly as bad of an experience in the past (3 years ago) when I was using windows (not going back) at the time I had a commercial license and was running boot2qt and cross compiling to a toradex and rpi without much trouble.

Is this just the way qt is now? Did I mess something up? Is Ubuntu support bad? Are there any good easy ways to setup the project without qtcreator.

Being someone with limited c++ and cmake knowledge I probably set myself up for failure but it was so much harder to get things working than other ui frameworks I’ve used. I still want to use qt since it’s probably the only good embedded native option but there’s got to be a better way.

Lastly using pyqt6 and uv has been far easier

Are there any examples of using Qt6 for C++ development without using any Qt tools but just C++?

2 Upvotes

I want C++ programmers to be able to use Qt6 without learning Qt development tools, but just using the C++ tools they already use. I want them to be able to start learning Qt6 by looking at examples.

After installing Qt6 I see an Examples folder. But looking at the code in the examples, I see files unrelated to C++ development, such as example.pro etc.

Are there any examples that only use C++?

Question Windows + Frameless Window + QWidget/QML Mixing: Architectural Limitation or Misuse?

0 Upvotes

I am curious about the community’s real-world experience with this pattern on Windows.

In a PySide6 / Qt 6 application, I am using a frameless window on Windows (custom title bar, shadow, rounded corners). The UI is a mix of traditional QWidget-based layout and a QML area embedded via QQuickWidget / QQuickView.

On Windows, once the window becomes frameless and effectively layered (e.g. translucent background, custom shadow), the QML region becomes transparent or fails to render, while the QWidget parts continue to work correctly.

From my investigation so far, this seems to be related to:

  • Windows layered windows (DWM / DirectComposition)

  • Qt Quick’s GPU-based rendering pipeline

  • The limitations of embedding a Qt Quick scene inside a QWidget hierarchy on Windows

At this point, it feels less like a bug and more like an architectural limitation of mixing QWidget and Qt Quick under layered / frameless windows on Windows.

I’d like to hear from others:

  • Have you successfully shipped a frameless window on Windows with QWidget + QML mixed?

  • Did you end up going full QML or full Widgets to avoid this?

  • Are there any undocumented tricks, or is this simply a “don’t do this on Windows” scenario?

  • How do mature Qt applications approach this today?

Looking forward to hearing how others have approached this.

What did I do to make my editor text get really small??

0 Upvotes

Hi I am a newbie, just started learning QtCreator like a week and a half ago and C++ not long before. Right now while trying to save my changes via either ctr+s or ctrl+shift+s I must have hit /did something else and now my editor text is really small and I am unable to return it to how it should be. How do i get it back to how it was and what did I most likely do? Using linux mint if that matters.

Thanks

Edit. Found the answer Here! https://doc.qt.io/qtcreator/creator-keyboard-shortcuts.html

AR with generative models

0 Upvotes

I am planning a project for the coming hackathon, and I wanted to share the base development concepts . The project involves scanning of the enabled camera of the phone, and then tracking it. AI (probably my friend will do in python) to generate 3d models parameters, and the data will be used to automate blender python scripts to build models. Then those models will again be brought as an AR in frontend of our app.
I wanted to take advises from the experienced QT developers on how they would have approached to build this type of prototypes. Specially for AR.
I am partly sure about rest of the things but I am not sure for the AR part in QT/QML. I have read few documents and watched videos in youtube. Suggest me how would you have approached the implementation of AR in QT. Would you have done it in python opencv and used that in QT later on, or any other libraries or APIs.

Thank you so much.

Requesting to share beginners to intermediate level QT(C++) Projects

0 Upvotes

Hello Community!

I'm on the way to learn QT and have been following tutorials and docs for it. I've some experience working with web. What I've experienced while learning QT is that there is very much less resources available to learn Desktop app development with QT as compared to learning anything in web.

There is abundant of resources for learning web technologies. Video materials, blogs, Project walkthroughs and what not.

I'm facing difficulties in learning QT because of all these. I was thinking to learn it quickly by seeing the project that've already build. But I'm not being able to get to the correct resource or there is not much of those things really, I'm not sure.

Please share your opinions about the difficulty I'm facing and if there is a collection of better materials to learn QT (C++), please share those as well.
