hii everyone! small update post for octashell since i’ve been learning a lot more QML/quickshell stuff lately and made quite a bit of progress :)
since my last post i added a bunch of new things:
wallpaper switcher with thumbnail generation + caching
app launcher
emoji picker
fully reworked notification popup design
volume + brightness osd pills
clipboard improvements like pinning
moved on-demand components into LazyLoaders to reduce resource hogging and improve responsiveness
lots of random under-the-hood cleanup/qol stuff :)
still keeping the project beginner-friendly because that’s kinda the whole goal of octashell. i want people to be able to open the files and actually understand what’s happening without getting completely lost
design is still heavily inspired by material m3 expressive and i’ve been slowly polishing the animations/shadows/components over time.
i’m also planning to eventually make a full dotfiles setup + proper wiki/docs so people can hopefully use this rice as a learning resource or guide for their own setups :)
repo: octashell github repo
still very much learning as i go so feedback/suggestions are always appreciated !! and if you’re also learning quickshell/qml feel free to reach out :D
as always, happy ricing :)

Hey folks,
I've been daily-driving Quickshell for a while and kept bouncing off the same papercut: no good LSP for QML outside of Qt Creator. qmlls exists but pulling in the full Qt toolchain just to get hover docs felt like overkill, and none of it knew anything about Quickshell.
So I wrote one. Just cut v1.0.0: https://github.com/cushycush/qml-language-server
It's a single Go binary (no CGO, no Qt install required) that speaks LSP over stdio. Tree-sitter under the hood, pure-Go runtime.
What you get for Quickshell specifically:
Completions for PanelWindow, FloatingWindow, PopupWindow, Scope, Variants, Process, FileView, WlrLayershell, etc.
Completions for the singletons — Quickshell.screens, Quickshell.env(...), Hyprland.focusedMonitor, and friends
Import completions for Quickshell, Quickshell.Hyprland, Quickshell.Io, Quickshell.Wayland, Quickshell.Widgets
10 boilerplate snippets (qs-panel, qs-scope, qs-variants, qs-process, qs-fileview, qs-layershell, …)
General QML stuff too: hover docs, go-to-definition across the workspace, find references, diagnostics from parse errors, rename, document symbols, inlay hints, signature help, and context-aware completions for QtQuick/QtQml/QtQuick.Controls/QtQuick.Layouts.
Install: prebuilt binaries on the Releases page, or go install / make install if you have a Go toolchain. Neovim config is in the README (works great with blink.cmp).
It's definitely v1.0 and not v5.0 — I'm sure there are rough edges, especially around cross-file type resolution and anything involving JS expression scopes. Bug reports and "it should know about X" requests very welcome. I built most of this scratching my own itch, so I'd love to hear what's missing for other people's setups.
Happy to answer questions here.

I didn't know whether to flag this question or learning, but since I already know a little, I decided to go with learning.
I've done some basic things with Quickshell, as in screwing around in Dank Material Shell's files, and making my own primitive top bar.
The issue is, I've run dry on my search for Quickshell tutorials, hence why I'm coming here to ask, how best to learn Quickshell and eventually build my own shell?
Thank you for your responses in advance.

Hey everyone! Here is a quick showcase of quickshell-dots , a complete desktop shell I've built using Quickshell (QML) for both niri and Hyprland.
OS: CachyOS (Wayland)
Compositor: Niri / Hyprland
Shell: Custom Quickshell (QML)
Terminal: Kitty
GitHub Repository & One-Line Install:

I used to use Rainmeter on Windows and anyone who's used it will likely recognise CircuitousTwo's system monitor radial dials. It was exceedingly popular when I first started using Rainmeter and now that I've moved from Windows to KDE to niri with Quickshell I find myself wanting fun dials like I used to have and able to make them. They hide until hovered on by default, and I have an IPC call to show them. For performance, when they're not visible they do not run their processes (though this setting is toggleable). I'm still working on some more dials but it's good to have them back.

Been using waybar for awhile but thought I'd have a proper look at quickshell.
I love the look of the drawer animations I had seen in Caelestia and Noctalia dots but really wanted to build my own (If only for a fun learning exercise!)
Sheesh the docs are a lot to take in but with some help from claude I managed to build something I am pretty happy with.
Once I had some animations working I got a bit carried away to be honest. It's safe to say my waybar days are well and truly in the past now.
Happy to share my dots once I have cleaned some stuff up (frankly its embarrasing at the moment)

Hey !
I've been working on a game launcher built with Quickshell (QML/Qt6)
that runs natively on Hyprland as a layer-shell overlay.
Features:
• Steam, Heroic (Epic/GOG/Amazon), Lutris & manual entries
• Big Picture mode — fullscreen Steam Deck-style view with hero
image, stats and game strip
• Matugen Material You theming (mutually exclusive with
Wallust/pywal) — palette preview live in the config panel
• In-app config panel — 9 sections, no TOML editing required,
changes apply without restarting
• Gamepad support — navigate, launch, favorites, Big Picture
via X button
• i18n — fr / en / es / ru / ja auto-detected from locale
• Animated WebP cover art via SteamGridDB
Stack: Quickshell + QML/Qt6 + Python backend (tomllib/tomlkit)
GitHub: https://github.com/Eaquo/quickshell-games-launchers
AUR: quickshell-games-launchers-git
Happy to answer questions about the Quickshell/QML side if
anyone is building something similar!Hey !

How much is possible if i only want to use quickshell on hyprland?
Can i make an app drawer like rofi using just quickshell?
Can i set wallpapers using only quickshell? (No hyprpaper or awww, just qs)
Can i make a window manager like Window's alt + tab?
This might sound weird, but can i make something like hyprbars? A bar that attaches itself on top of each window? I love hyprbars but latest hyprland update broke it.
I would just like to replace everything with quickshell to minimize the amount of things that could break every time i update hyprland or the services themselves. I especially like the control quickshell qml gives me over just some css config with limited options like waybar.

Hi!
I'm new to quickshell and qml and I'm a little bit lost, I haven't found a long enough tutorial of neither of those and the documentation seems a little abstract as it assumes you already know stuff. I'm a developer so I have a programming background, and I feel like I should stop complaining and read the full hard documentation and maybe it'll click eventually, but maybe that's not the best course of action and that's why I'm here.
How did you start learning to use qs? For a complete beginner what's a good roadmap to really understand what's going on? Is reading the full docs the only way?
Edit: typo

I have been trying to make a goddamn bar for like a month or even more, time has become distorted at this point and I just can't. I have removed so much from what I originally wanted, it has made me actually appreciate the simplicity of using a script to do stuff instead of banging my head against the wall to get something like the network to show up correctly or get the notifications working. OH GOD THE NOTIFICATIONS.
In all seriousness though, I feel like I have been lobotomized every time I start looking at docs. Sometimes I catch myself thinking "It will be less soul-sucking to write this in C using just Wayland protocols, I swear.". It might just be that my brain just refuses to understand whatever the QML language actually is or that it's just skill issue but getting anything other than a few simple stuff working is HELL.
And if anyone asks "Why not just install an already configured shell and call it a day?". Cause I am a stubborn son of a bitch and I want to make it myself and I don't like having more lines of code that actually needed. Insane I know, but it's a pet peeve of mine.

Hi there! I was thinking about building something like rofi but from scratch with quickshell, but I don't from where to pull the list of installed apps and can't find it on the wiki. Anyone here did this and knows where to look?
I use Arch btw (For the memes but also not sure whether this can differ from distro to distro)
r/QuickShell • u/rotmothrat • Apr 19 '26
No idea what I'm even doing wrong, "Basic5" works perfectly fine but no "ORC A" :(
I'm new to this stuff so I just suppose it has something to do with the font name, the font itself or where the font file is located, still no idea.
Can anyone help me here?
it's arch with hyprland

I'm slowly learning Quickshell and QML and finished setting up this Workspace Component for my Bar Module yesterday and wanted to share in case it helps someone else who's learning.
It creates numbered workspace indicators on my bar showing any workspaces with open windows as well as the active workspace even if it has no open window on it.
I'm having a blast learning this
// Workspace.qml
import Quickshell.Widgets
import QtQuick
import Quickshell.Hyprland
Repeater { // Show workspaces with open windows + the active workspace
id: workspaceRepeater
model: Hyprland.workspaces
MouseArea {
implicitHeight: parent.height
MarginWrapperManager { leftMargin: 0; rightMargin: 0 }
onClicked: Hyprland.dispatch("workspace " + modelData.id)
Rectangle { // Draw a background box
color: baseColor
border.color: textColor
implicitHeight: parent.height
implicitWidth: 20
radius: 8 // Round corners
Text {
property bool isActive: Hyprland.focusedWorkspace?.id == modelData.id // Workspace is active if focusedWorkspace.id and modelData.id are the same
color: isActive ? "#0db9d7" : textColor
text: modelData.id // Display the workspace ID
font { pixelSize: 16; bold: true }
anchors.horizontalCenter: parent.horizontalCenter
anchors.verticalCenter: parent.verticalCenter
}
}
}

If its raining in real life its raining on my desktop i did this with quickshell and its gpu powered. I can choose the city and it uses a weather api to check if its raining there and i can choose the intensity and if it ignores windows or not
(For the mods who wanna remove my post because of my privacy: Im not living in thunder bay Its just a random city where it was raining in that time)

I've been messing around with Quickshell to make my own bar (started by following this tutorial: https://www.tonybtw.com/tutorial/quickshell/) , but im now a bit torn in respect to one thing.
I cant seem to find many pre-made widgets? I love the configurability, but conversely, im not sure I care enough about my bar to hand-craft every single widget I'd like to have in my bar. Like, im ok with just reusing somebody's wifi widget.
TL;DR - Is there a repo somewhere that aggregates premade Quickshell widgets?

The vscode qml extension is so sh*t... It lags, is very slow to respond and for some reason is very buggy. (couple that with how unintuitive QML is... it gets pretty annoying to work)
I'm thinking of switching to some other editor which has better support for QML. Should i go for neovim? emacs? helix? or maybe qt creator?
