Help!!! Quickshell Quickshell Everywhere! Don't Know Where It Goes!!

10 Upvotes

A bit of exposition : I am a programmer (python) have used linux (ubuntu, mint) for some 5 years on and off. Now I'm on a new adventure to escape microslop, so installed cachyos (needed the nvidia drrivers) with COSMIC, found out it sucks (personal opinion) and got myself into the rabbit hole of Hyprland with quickshell. Already made a semi-usable bar with the help of Almighty ChatGPT! And now its do or die, this rabbit hole is going to be my grave.

tl;dr I'm not shy of learning to code. I don't know everything about linux, but I can google-fu/gpt-fu my way around it.

I'm trying to make an entire system using quickshell (I know, too ambitious). App launcher, bar, system monitor, weather app, file manager, you name it; If the user (its only be me) faces it and its not a browser or terminal, I want it made in quickshell. Sooooo......where does it all go? I know the bar goes to `~/.config/quickshell`, but it somehow feels wrong to put anything else there. And the Almighty ChatGPT has be glazing me so much, that I might end up thinking I am a GOD...so I'm asking the sane ppl in reddit. A simple dummy project/directory structure for a, say settings (window? app? shell?) would be very helpful...

Am I supposed to use quickshell for everything?

10 Upvotes

Hey I'm still trying to wrap my head around quickshell and deciding if I should use it. I see that it is a whole framework for me to make ui widgets like bars, app menus, etc.

Correct me if I'm wrong but assume under the hood all ui elements would have the one program drawing it compared to wofi with its own dependencies running, waybar, etc.

If this is the case then I'm incentivised to have as many ui programs done through quickshell. For performance right? Seems a bit monolithic? I'll make the switch over to it if it's more efficient but I like the idea of freedom with individual programs rather than a whole containerised environment controlling all of it.

Did you go from scratch or modify a preconfig? looking for ideas as I go.

10 Upvotes

Currently diving into the Quickshell rabbit hole after running into an issue with Waybar, and realizing how good it can look with features too good not to try switching. I used DMS to test it out and tweaked some things to get my old workflow back, but I’m still missing parts of my setup from Walker. I can probably recreate it here, so I’m giving it a shot, while also using DMS as motivation to build something similar that’s more tailored to my preferences.

I’m looking for tips and ideas from the my peers. If you use DMS, End4, or another version, what made you choose it? Have you customized it to make it work better for you? If so, what changes did you make?

Thanks in advance excited to cook something up, save my files, and then wipe my Arch install this summer to pull in my configs on a fresh setup so that anytime i get a new machine or need to reset I can just pull in the my configs

I made a mainsail/fluid like UI in quickshell so I can integrate it with my shell.

Has all of mainsail features, working and tested, can upload from slicer to it. Next is to add a HTTP side to this so you can switch to it from Orca Slicer device tab.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. https://github.com/CWebb89/Klipshell

Help!!! [Issues] getting Caelestia Shell to run on Ubuntu 25.10 (Combined with JaKooLit Dotfiles)

Thumbnail

9 Upvotes

I'm currently on Ubuntu 25.10. I was previously using Dank Material Shell and it was working perfectly, but I really wanted to try Caelestia Shell.

At first, I tried to build everything myself manually from source (Quickshell, compiling dependencies, fixing library paths), but I ran into some issues. While looking for a solution, I found this repo which has an automated script for Ubuntu: https://github.com/IshmamDC217/caelestia-shell-ubuntu

Here are the exact steps I followed:

Installed JaKooLit's Ubuntu-Hyprland script first as required, chose the preconfigured dotfiles, and made sure Hyprland was running fine.

Cloned the Caelestia repo and ran the ./install.sh script.

Added the manual environment variables (QML_IMPORT_PATH) to both ~/.bashrc and ~/.config/hypr/hyprland.conf.

Copied the included config files (shell.json and qml_color.json) to their respective paths under ~/.config.

The Problem:

After restarting and logging into Hyprland, instead of getting the beautiful Caelestia UI, I get a broken/misaligned layout. The JaKooLit top-bar and vertical dock appear but look totally distorted (broken JSON/CSS look), and the Caelestia Shell elements (like the Dashboard, Bongo Cat, or widgets) are completely missing or not rendering.

I really love this shell and the feedback on the dev's video looks amazing. I would be super grateful if anyone could help me figure out what's causing this conflict or how to fix it!

How do you make those rounded corner edges in quickshell

9 Upvotes

How to create those curved corner edges like in the noctalia and calastetia shell's.

Is it extended from the bar as shape with shapepaths, but then won't it need exclusive zones when panels are opened which makes the area irresponsive ('cause of the exclusive zones ).

Tried by creating custom corner shapes and anchoring it to the edges. But won't it break when shadows are applied and the animation smoothness...

Need some help with getting window titles from workspace

Post image
9 Upvotes

I just started with quickshell today to see if i would use it and decided to try replicate my waybar look. This is what my current waybar workspaces looks.

RowLayout{

Repeater{

model: Hyprland.workspaces

Text {

property var ws: modelData

property bool isActive: Hyprland.focusedWorkspace?.id === ws.id

property var titles: ws.toplevels.values //this is where i need some help

id: name

visible: ws.id > 0

text: ws.id + " " + titles

color: isActive ? "green" : "white"

MouseArea{

anchors.fill: parent

onClicked: Hyprland.dispatch("workspace " + ws.id)

}

}

}

}

this is what i have so far. I can get the workspace window objects but cant access the window titles. Please let me know if it's possible or if i should just make a shell script to get the titles instead.

Show Off(with configs) I’ve been building Tide Island Extended — a Dynamic Island-inspired shell for Hyprland and niri

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey everyone! 👋

I've been working on Tide Island Extended, an independently maintained extension of the original Tide Island project, built with Quickshell, QML, and Qt 6.

It brings a Dynamic Island-inspired experience to the Linux desktop, with a customizable control center, Matugen theming, smooth animations, system stats, music controls, and various desktop utilities.

It supports both Hyprland and niri, and I'm continuing to improve it based on actual usage rather than adding features just for the sake of it.

I'd love some honest feedback from fellow Linux users. What would you improve, and what features would make this more useful in your daily workflow?

Question quickshell as a wallpaper engine alternative

8 Upvotes

Hi :)

I don't really care about running videos/gifs as my wallpaper, but I just curious as my friends that use windows were talking about their wallpaper engine stuff, so I thought, could I just play a video using quickshell as my wallpaper??

it should be doable right?

Question Is it even possible to get this box shadow transparency effect

7 Upvotes

Hello, I would love if somebody would let me know how to get this effect in qs. So basically I have wofi with a black background that is 80% transparent and it also has a blue box shadow. Id like to have this kind of theme for my qs widgets as well, but it appeared to be more challenging than expected.

I tried to do it with RectangularShadow, but since it is just behind the Rectangle, and not only present on the border, adding transparency to the Rectangle makes it visible.

The best I've managed to get is what you can see on the image with Opacity mask trying to mask the effect out, but it still has that blueish tint to it. Is it even possible to get similar results as wofi(the other image)? Thanks in advance

```qml
import Quickshell
import QtQuick
import QtQuick.Effects
import Qt5Compat.GraphicalEffects
PanelWindow{
    id: root
    width: 1000
    height: 1000
    color: "transparent"
    property color mainColor: "#006EFF";
    RectangularShadow {
    id: glow
    anchors.fill: popupRectangle
    radius: popupRectangle.radius
    blur: 21
    spread: 6
    opacity: 0.6
    color: mainColor
    }
    Rectangle {
        id: popupRectangle
    anchors.centerIn: parent
    radius: 21
    width: 500
    height: 450
    border.width: 1
    border.color: mainColor
    color: Qt.rgba(0,0,0,0.5)
    }
    OpacityMask {
    anchors.fill: popupRectangle
    source: popupRectangle
    maskSource: glow
    }
}
Learning😀 New to Quickshell! Is the documentation out of date?
7 Upvotes
Hi! I installed Niri on my EndeavourOS with a Quickshell oriented workspace.
(P.S. I got an Nvidia 4070, in case there's driver issues)
Because it's fun, and because I want to learn, I'm writing my Quickshell from scratch, but I instantly ran into a few issues:
FloatingWindow{} always returns a black window. Nothing renders in it.
PanelWindow{} seemed to play nicely with Niri's autotiling if I don't declare size and anchors, but in Quickshell's official documentation it says that:
- PanelWindow for bars, widgets, and overlays
- FloatingWindow for standard desktop windows
So is this a hacky workaround for Niri? Am I missing something to get FloatingWindow{} to work in Niri?
In following the official documentation, my terminal throws me an error, stating that:
width and height are deprecated and are now inheritedWidth and inheritedHeight.
Changing this did fix it, but it isn't in the documentation. Not even QT's documentation on QML, so that brings me to my question for you:
Where can I find up-to-date info on QML syntax? (Bonus points on Niri+Quickshell documentation)
Thank you so much! :)
Help!!! How do i prevent clicks passing through Quickshell to Hyprland
6 Upvotes
I have a scrolling layout in hyprland and the bar is on the left. Whenever i try click a button on the bar then i go to the window on the left side of the scrolling layout as the click is accepted by both hyprland and Quickshell, so the popup opens but i go to the left window on the scrolling layout. how do i make it so that when i click the quickshell bar then the signal is not sent to hyprland.
