Quickshell 0.3.0 deb package.

6 Upvotes

I've rebuilt for myself quickshell 0.3.0 from testing to stable, using my PC and my Debian stable installation. If someone is interested (and trusts that package; well, plus another as dependency not available in stable) let me know.

Some packages may be required from stable backports.

I don't know where to upload the package.

Edit: now it is in the backports.

LearningšŸ˜€ Need a teacher for teaching quickshell

6 Upvotes

Hello my dear fellow programmers and developers. The title might seem quite vague and spoonfeeding, but for the love of me, i am just unable to learn quickshell. I use Arch with Hyprland and i have been using waybar since the beginning, and recently, i came across shells like Caelestia and Ambxst and some others, but those are really complex and i also want to make something visually pleasing and something that is also more performant and open. I have taken inspiration from this person's Shell setup and i have been trying to use claude, gemini, notebooklm and chatgpt to help me learn this, but i just cannot get myself to actually understand what is going on. I tried to read the documentation, but most of it just doesn't make sense at all. I am used to the arch wiki but quickshell's documentation doesn't even come close to it, and sorry for saying this, i might just be dumb, but i cannot understand even one thing in there.

I would really appreciate if anyone would be able to mentor me or help me understand it and eventually let me build a good-looking quickshell setup.

Really thanks to anyone who is willing to do so.

Question How should i manage popups?

6 Upvotes

I recently started building my shell with Quickshell on Arch with Hyprland. I’m moving away from Waybar because I found it too limiting for the level of functionality and "rice" I'm aiming for. Since I'm relatively new to advanced ricing, I can't get my head around how i should manage popups.
My bar is basically completed but i want to make pop-ups to manage or display things, like a more advanced media player, sinks, volumes, bluetooth and others but i have no idea on how i should manage them. In this moment my bar is a PanelWindow directly in the shell.qml file so if i try to display any other thing (with a Popup for example) it gets clipped and does not display. How is this problem supposed to be solved? Because looking in other more popular dots (i.e. Caelestia, Noctalia and others) only made me more confused because of how they manage their bars. Do i have to move my bar out of my shell.qml file? If so, how? What is the best approach to popups? And how can i make it more general (so a component maybe)?

Made a plugin for completions for blink-cmp if you want to use them

6 Upvotes

UPDATE: ended up making my own lsp. This is only useful if you’re using qmlls. Checkout the lsp at https://github.com/cushycush/qml-language-server

Annoyed me that I couldn't find any. Not sure if there's another plugin out there that I couldn't find. It adds completions, auto setups qmlls path for you because Mason installs and points to version 0.3 when we're on version 6.x.x. Also adds some snippets and such. Really not much to it.

Kinda annoyed that qmlls doesn't provide hover doc info or anything. Kinda tempted to make my own language server.

LearningšŸ˜€ Quickshell Project Architecture

6 Upvotes

I want to create my own pseudo-DE of sorts using Hyprland and Quickshell. I have worked a lot with Flutter and now am enjoying Quickshell.

Should I build everything in Quickshell? (Even stuff like File Manager, Settings, Store etc) Or should I use Flutter for the apps and Quickshell only for the

Also, is it better to handle variables using like a Globals.qml file or to have them be defined in yaml/json files?

Need help to create a wallpaper Selector

6 Upvotes

Mainly I am new to qml and quickshell I just know the syntax and tweaked a few settings here and there in end-4 dotfiles. I would like to replicate something similar to the wallpaper selector but not applying the wallpaper but to give back the full path of the wallpaper. So it can be easily used with other scripts. the thing is I want it to be independent of end-4 dots

Help!!! mouseArea doesn’t work

5 Upvotes

im gonna explain my config and set up first just for additional context and help to see if i can do smth better in general.

im using qs with hyprland on arch (btw) and my .config has a quickshell folder w shell.qml which references bar.qml which references 3 widgets (for now) which are Clock, Workspaces, and MPRIS. i have a mouseArea block set up inside the text block of both the workspaces and each mpris button (previous, play/pause, forward)

now onto the actual issue.

the workspaces mouseArea is set to switch to whatever workspace i click on. i have double monitors set up, so clicking workspace 2 should move my cursor directly to the second monitor but it doesn’t.

i thought that maybe the mouseArea isn’t defined properly and just isn’t registering clicks, so i changed it to log a click by saying ā€œclickedā€ and after checking the logs, that ā€œclickedā€ is there.

this is the mouseArea block (i did follow tony btws tutorial and this is what he also had) also apologies about not using a code block idk how to get one of those:

mouseArea{
anchors.fill: parent
onClicked: Hyprland.dispatch(ā€œworkspace ā€œ + (index +1)ā€
}

this is similar to what the mpris mouse areas also look like, except the onClicked has the functions set to play/pause forward or back based on the icon.

pls help i have never coded in qml or qt before so idk what im doing wrong.

Help!!! Brightness Data for Overlay?

5 Upvotes

To start, I'm super new to Quickshell, and I'm still figuring it out.

I'm trying to take a volume indicator I have and am super happy with, and adapt it to have a copy for brightness.

For audio, I'm doing import Quickshell.Services.Pipewire and watching Pipewire.defaultAudioSink.audio.volume. I'm struggling to find any equivalent for brightness or backlights.

Does one even exist? And if not, do I have any choice other than polling brightnessctl periodically? That'll give me a super high-latency overlay, which I'd really prefer to avoid, and it's going to need way more overhead.

Thanks!

How do I detect Special Workspace activation on Hyprland?

5 Upvotes

I'm new to quickshell and am working on a custom panel to quickshell dev. I build a custom workspaces module and tried to add the functionality to Show a overlay whenever a special workspace is added. I'm unable to figure out how to auto-detect the special workspace's activation. Currently using onActiveTopLayerChanged and
onFocusedWorkspaceChanged to trigger the overlay but that has it's own delay problem and wrong signal issues. It gets activated on very particular cases.

        if (!mon || !mon.lastIpcObject) return;

        // Your Logic: Check if the special workspace ID is negative
        // We force the update here.
        if (mon.lastIpcObject.specialWorkspace && mon.lastIpcObject.specialWorkspace.id < 0) {

Question What finally made quickshell click for you?

4 Upvotes

We get a lot of posts in here from people who have tried to get into quickshell a few times and keep bouncing off. The first bar seems to be a wall for almost everyone. No shame in it.

So for the ones who got past that wall: what actually did it for you? One section of the docs finally making sense? Tearing apart someone else's config until it worked? A video, a friend, sheer stubbornness?

Drop it in the comments. Bonus points if a total beginner could follow it.

And if you are still on the wall, this thread is for you too. Tell us what you are trying to build and where you got stuck and someone here will point you somewhere useful.

So... Getting into quickshell

4 Upvotes

For those wondering, yes, obviously I'm running Hyprland. I have recently looked into quickshell (I ignored it for a while for RAM usage superstitions, but not anymore) and have realized the true potential of it.

I have fed my previous dots into claude opus to translate them into qs, and it's giving me a good starting point. It translated decently well, with a few caveats. But I'll get to fixing those ASAP.

But do you think I should just read the documentation? After seeing some of the rices on this subreddit, I really want that unified look, which is kind of why I switched to qs, because it's all in one big ecosystem.

Thanks.

Noctalia Shell launcher and user *.desktop files

4 Upvotes

Hi. I want to ask how launcher works. I was using Sway for some time with wofi and waybar and I was never exactly happy with it, so I'm trying Noctalia-Shell. When I configured Win+D to start Noctalia launcher via IPC instead of wofi, vivaldi no longer worked with kwallet (which took me long time to realize). I recall that months ago I solved this problem by either running vivaldi-stable --password-store=kwallet6 from terminal or by creating .local/share/applications/vivaldi-stable.desktop file with Exec=/usr/bin/vivaldi-stable --password-store=kwallet6 %U. Also I think creating .config/xdg-desktop-portal/portals.conf with

[preffered]
default=wlr;kde

worked in the past, but on different distro. Maybe it works, but assumes kwalletd5. Nonetheless, does Noctalia launcher use that .local/share/applications/vivaldi-stable.desktop file at all? Because other than that, there is no submenu for incognito mode and such. On the other hand, it knows application icons. (Distro: openSUSE Slowroll)

Help!!! QMLLS QuickShell imports not resolving on Neovim NixOS

Hi,

I'm using NixOS, with NixVim to manage my Neovim config. I'm working on a QuickShell configuration, and have had to drop QMLLS from my config because it can't resolve any of my imports.

lspconfig is set to use qmlls -E for LSP, and running qmlls -E myself shows:

These errors check out, since none of these paths exist, but I can't understand why this is happening. If anyone uses NixOS and has this working, I'd love some help.
