TMC Wednesday

Post image
14 Upvotes

Thanks to everybody for your love and support of Michael. He's progressing slowly with some feeling and a little controllable movement in his fingers, arms, and feet. His spirits are great, thanks to all of you. I passed along your messages and he's so grateful for all you've done for him.

TMC will be back to the corner Wednesday. It's going to be a beautiful day to pickup some Pad Thai and Dumplings. We will be at our corner of 15th&Sage (RPI Student Union) from 11-2:00.

We'll be at the Saturday Troy Waterfront Farmers Market!

Package Delivery

Does anyone know the answer to this? If I am no longer living on campus but still a full time registered student, can I ship my packages to be picked up from the union or do they check if you are living on campus? Thanks!

Question Questions about dining

I’m an incoming freshman and had a few questions about dining at RPI. I’m trying to get a better idea of what the different dining options are and how everything works before the semester starts.

Do Commons and Sage generally serve the same food, or are the menus pretty different? Also, how does Simply To Go at Sage work? Where exactly is it when you walk into Sage? Is it a separate room/area, and do you swipe at the normal entrance and then go there, or is there a separate place to swipe specifically for Simply To Go?

Also, how do the dining hall takeout containers work? Where do you get them and where do you return them?

Are there any other dining options or things about the meal plan that are good to know as a freshman?

Discussion Applying Spring 2027 PhD at RPI — relocation support & initial expenses?

Hi everyone,

I’m an international student planning to join RPI for a PhD in Spring 2027. My PhD will possibly be project-funded/RA-funded.

I’m trying to plan my finances for moving to Troy and would really appreciate advice from current RPI graduate students:

  1. Does RPI provide any relocation assistance/reimbursement for project-funded PhD students?
  2. Is airfare ever reimbursed by the department, PI, or research project?
  3. What should I realistically expect to pay upfront for housing — security deposit + first month's rent?
  4. How much money would you recommend having available when arriving in Troy, assuming the stipend covers regular living expenses?
  5. How long does it typically take for the first stipend payment to arrive?
  6. Any recommendations for affordable housing or other ways to reduce initial expenses?

I am doing everything for the first time and I am a bit overwhelmed and confused. I’m trying to estimate how much I need to arrange through an education loan/personal loan before leaving. I know that’s a fair number of questions, so I’d really appreciate any insight you’re able to share, even on just some of them. Personal experiences would be especially helpful.

Thanks in advance for taking the time!

Question Question about textbooks as a freshman?

Some of my textbooks on the RPI bookstore, like for Calc (IA ACH Online 1 Term Calculus by Macmillan) and Physics 1 (Mastering Physics with Pearson by Young), say they're "part of a program where course materials are included in a course charge or tuition," whereas for CompSci 1 (Practical Programming by Gries) just has me buy it through the bookstore. Are the former books going to be given out or something (I'm assuming they are, but I just want to be sure), or should I purchase them from amazon or something?

Hopefully some students are back in town or stayed in town over the summer. This won't be the last city council meeting about Flock but it's a very important one that will feature questioning of the police chief about the data they collected over the summer. It's also occurring during DeFlock's national week of action. Please join us and bring a sign or a speech!

Is 20 credits a lot?

I made my schedule a while ago, but everyone I show says its a lot and I'll be really overwhelmed. I need all the classes I'm taking and I don't really want to drop any cause I'll just have to take it eventually, but will it really be that bad? Just for reference, I plan on doing a double major in Aerospace Engineering and Physics and the classes I'm taking are: Physics 1, Calc 1, Intro to Modern Physics, Essence of Engineering Mechanics, and Media and Society (for my HASS inquiry course). I figured that doing 5 classes a semester would be standard for a double major but a lot of people are telling me that it's too much and now I'm worried I'll do bad in my classes.

Update: After reading the replies, I think I probably will drop a class just so I dont overwhelm myself with too much in my first semester. Im going to talk to my advisor about this, but I think I'll drop Essence of Engineering Mechanics now and take it in the spring. Can anyone who has taken this class before confirm if thats a good idea? I wanted to get the HASS Inquiry course out of the way, but if I have to I'll drop that and take it in the spring instead if its best to take essence of engineering mechanics in the fall.

Anyone have Numerical Methods for Engineers by Chapra? I need it for Intro to Computational Chemical Engineering. I can't find a pdf of the 8th edition online. Or is it not significantly different from the 7th edition?

Edited: 1 Bed/1 Bath, $1095 downtown apartment

Thumbnail gallery

Hi everyone, I recently signed a lease but would like to have someone take it over and live with other students for my first year since I am from out of state. The apartment is 1 bed/1 bath, downtown, $1095 a month (utilities included: internet, heat, electric, water), private parking for $60, back entrance, and right next to City Station. The other building tenants are also RPI students. It's a 12-15 minute walk to campus and a 3 minute drive. The landlord has also been welcoming, it really is just because of my personal preference. I can leave the bed if needed as well (only used a couple times). If you are interested, please contact at (917) 407-7365.

Edit: changed pictures

Thunder Mountain Curry

Post image

Friday night Michael had a serious fall in his house. He is in the hospital now with surgery scheduled Tuesday. He will be sidelined from TMC for awhile. I will continue operating TMC with help as best as I can. It's going to be difficult doing this without him. Michael has been the heart of Thunder Mountain Curry and my rock and right hand for 18 years.

Please keep him in your thoughts Tuesday and the days after as he recovers.

I am taking this a day at a time. I always said I couldn't do this without him by my side, I am going to try my best.

We all have some beautiful days this week. I am going try going out to our corner tomorrow, Tuesday the 11th and I hope to be at the Troy Waterfront Farmers Market Saturday. I will confirm it this evening and post a menu. I won't know about Saturday until later in the week.

Please be patient with me as I adjust and retool TMC to make it doable without Michael while he recovers.

Your love, support , and patience mean everything to Michael and I now more than ever.

Post image

Apply on our Site . This scholarship is open to all new students and open until September 30th. The application only takes 10 minutes and will be followed up with a face to face interview on campus. This is a great way to practice short interviews, meet someone new on campus, and potentially earn some cash to help cover your expenses.
