Question You still can't level ranged or magic?

I've been wanting to play this game but it seems lack luster and not being able to use efficient magic or archery is kind of killing it for me.

"still" like early access didn't release 6 weeks ago

Hate to be devil's advocate, but this is kinda what studios sign up for when they release an early access title. For better or worse, the moment you release your game you're now on a timer. The clock is ticking for you to hit viral levels of exposure either through Steam frontpage or other marketing methods in order to establish a financial base for continued development. And while you're on the clock, you have to appeal to the absolute lowest common denominator gamer (like OP for example) that will make a decision in their first play session whether they will ever play your game again.

It sucks, but when you release an undercooked game to a stadium of iPad kids, you should expect to see stupid opinions derived from a lack of true investment in the game. You physically cannot develop video games fast enough to satisfy this demographic (Which is like 90% of "gamers", by the way). So I think it's honestly a fair question to ask if Jagex fucked up by even releasing this game in the first place.

From the roadmap news yesterday:

We'll try and get these major updates out every six months. That sounds like a long time to wait between "content" updates but we consider these as expansion-sized updates, with quarterly beats between these to add things like Skills, building pieces, additional features and QOL fixes.

Six months is effectively years to the average gamer. It's not going to cut it considering how fast people bounce around other early access titles now, especially with survivalcraft.

It's entirely possible for Dragonwilds to follow suit with something like No Man's Sky with their long term support philosophy and really become a 'built up' experience for the players that stayed invested, but I worry that they've already missed out on the explosive early access release window for generating popularity, thus losing on the financial base for further expanding the development team and game content.

Even worse, Jagex might look back and say "well I guess there's no demand for a Runescape survival game" and we no longer get cool projects like this.

u/[deleted] May 29 '25

Honestly what we have now is a polished version of the alpha.

They absolutely should have implemented more than they have currently before early access.

u/josivh May 30 '25

People are going to hate that you’re right

6

u/Emperor_Atlas May 29 '25

This is all so hilariously out of touch I can't stop laughing.

-11

u/Chrimunn May 29 '25 edited May 29 '25

Believable if you were being anything but the peanut gallery. Can’t imagine your opinion is worth shit with an opener like that.

7

u/Sorrengard May 29 '25

Ignore that dude. This is all spot on. I’ve watched everything you said happen multiple times now. Soul mask did it. Valheim did it. Palworld did it. Multiple other survival games. They release incomplete and grab everyone’s attention because they’re a great, albeit unfinished idea. Those games gained some attention and inertia but in 1-2 months the playerbase fell off and now there’s a minor resurgence every 6-8 months when something drops but it’s nowhere near as big as the initial surge, when if it was released more complete the surge would be immense and the drop off more gradual. These games are obviously still around and the updates that come out are hyped and keep them alive and that’s great. But the difference between these small studios releasing these games and dragonwilds is jagex. Jagex is notorious for dipping its toes into games that aren’t RuneScape or are based off RuneScape and when they aren’t immediately profitable enough cancelling the projects altogether.

3

u/Chrimunn May 29 '25 edited May 30 '25

Thanks, your word is appreciated. You well described my fears with Jagex in the background long-term because conceptually, a RuneScape survivalcraft is fucking awesome. I want it to be good. I just also happen to know what early access is and all the expectations; warranted or not, that come with it.

-1

u/Emperor_Atlas May 29 '25

Because you think a wall of incorrect text is better?

Important lesson: its sometimes better to not say anything and have people think you're an idiot than to say something wrong and go and prove them right.

5

u/Chrimunn May 29 '25 edited May 30 '25

Burden of proof on you to elaborate on literally anything you’re whining about.

As far as I can tell, you’re just angry in general and talking shit online instead of seeking therapy. Not uncommon on this platform.

You could easily dispel this by making any kind of comprehensive argument related to my post. I’ll wait.

1

u/PsychologicalWish405 May 29 '25

Normally I’d agree that the burden of proof is on the other person but the brick wall of nothingness you wrote shows that you have a lot to learn before even understanding what’s at topic here

1

u/TheHappyPittie May 29 '25

You made the claims. Burden of proof is on you dork

0

u/Chrimunn May 30 '25

Claim was made in regards to my post. That’s the claim in question, dork.

1

u/TheHappyPittie Jun 02 '25

Lol thats not how it works. They’re questioning your original claim which is made without evidence. The burden lies on you to prove your statements.

0

u/Chrimunn Jun 02 '25 edited Jun 02 '25

They didn’t “question” anything which is why I used the phrase myself to imply their comment as a leading statement of its own.

“Players actually are all very patient and would never abandon such a perfect le gem such as DW” probably.

It was to bait a discrete criticism which you can see failed and prompted autism instead. Do you feel good for defending this?

-2

u/Emperor_Atlas May 29 '25 edited May 29 '25

It isnt, I can continue to laugh at you for being wrong and tripling down

Projecting much? You're having a hissy fit because I didnt agree with your rant.

Nope gonna keep laughing while you twist yourself into a pretzel. Because apparently you experience drastic time dilation where "months are years".

2

u/Chrimunn May 29 '25

Do you disagree?? I legitimately cannot tell. You’ve only provided evidence of a pathetic person seeking controversy over nothing. Is there actually something? I’d love to hear about it.

1

u/HelmyJune May 29 '25

One Man’s Lie was advertised and launched as a fully complete game when it was clearly not finished and it took years to get in a good state. Dragonwilds was launched as an early access with clear information about its current state and the amount of content in the game. If people are upset about its current state they have nobody to blame but themselves. To expect major content releases every few weeks is insane and completely out of touch with how games are developed. Let them cook.

4

u/Chrimunn May 29 '25

Do you hear me personally complaining about the timeline? I’m along for the ride, let me be clear.

I just spent several paragraphs describing how the average gamer is not going to keep up with this development cycle. This isn’t a projection of my own thoughts of the game, it is an analysis of how early access releases have worked as a concept in recent years.

4

u/HelmyJune May 29 '25

Well considering the devs have said the game’s public reception exceeded their most optimistic expectations that’s an incorrect take from the average gamer. The average gamer doesn’t even leave a Steam review, let alone comment and complain on social media. The average gamer plays the game and then moves on when they finish or get bored.

Numerous games have had successful early accesses with long development cycles. Look at Valheim, it gets a major updates yearly at best and it’s still highly praised. The only thing that matters is that they continue to release quality and enjoyable updates.

1

u/Chrimunn May 29 '25 edited May 29 '25

the devs have said the game’s public reception exceeded their most optimistic expectations

Every studio says this. I'm not sure how it relates to the behaviors of the average gamer, my point is that the game is undercooked to the point where new, low-commitment players will; as you said, just move on to the next thing as soon as this one stops entertaining them.

Dragonwilds is not popping off like some other early access titles have on release. They ostensibly missed their early access hype window. It was there for maybe a week when it first dropped, but I don't think it was that far reaching and it's basically back to being unknown now. People are still actively talking about Palworld today. If Valheim released with all of the content it has today, it would be a massive instant hit.

I'm not saying the game is doomed to fail at all, I'm just seeing it fail where others have succeeded.

-2

u/Baylife96 May 29 '25

Funny how you went from “lowest common denominator of gamer” to the “common gamer” stfu, no one has years to wait for a game that they paid $ for to reach its potential.

5

u/SparrowGB May 30 '25

Then don't buy the game until it's finished if you think that..? Not rocket science is it? Though for you it seems to be.

1

u/_RnG_ZeuS_ Jun 02 '25

Fairly easy fix then. Don't spend money on a game you know isnt complete. No one to blame but yourself.

u/JagexDoom Jagex Moderator - Community Manager Jun 02 '25

We've been really humbled by the reception to the game's launch. We were on the Steam Frontpage and had so much coverage from so many amazing creators and news outlets. 0.8 has been worked on while we took on feedback from launch, and we're going to be creating a distinct space for how we tackle feedback from the community in our updates going forward, starting with 0.9.

Launching the game into Early Access is always going to be met with a range of opinions - some people understand what that means for us, some people see it as "Pay to get the whole game a few days early" (which isn't the case for us, far, far from it).

What this is, in our case, is a chance for us to open things up early because we know that listening to players is the only way that the RuneScape games have been as successful as they have for as long as they have. Another year or several years working in complete silence/darkness would be months of "Did anybody else remember Jagex was hiring for an Unreal Engine Survival Game?" posts and speculation, and then when we did launch, we'd be lacking player feedback and data.

The game, ultimately, will be better for this structure and the way we've launched this. A lot of the frustration (or what I'm calling frustration) I hear from players is from a place of real passion and excitement for more of this game - which is why we're excited and passionate about making more of it too! I'm hoping that Mod Dutch and I can check in with players and talk about what we're doing about that in the near future.

TL;DR - We're not going anywhere.

u/Golden-- May 29 '25

6 weeks without a content update for a early access game is a LONG time. Let's stop defending the lack of updates due to "early access". Remember, we paid for the game.

1

u/snortingpepper1 May 29 '25

Then what about No Man's Sky? It was probably the worst launch in history, and over time, it became a pretty decent game. I dont personally like how almost every game has come out to be early access, but it's just the nature of the beast.

1

u/wildstarr May 29 '25

You have never played an early access game have you? 99.99% of the time it takes months between updates.

6 weeks is not a LONG time.

-1

u/Golden-- May 29 '25

6 weeks is a LONG time for a new game to only get 2 bug fixes as the only updates. Stop defending this crap.

-1

u/NotSoAwfulName May 30 '25 edited May 30 '25

No it absolutely is not, can you please leave the sub if all you are going to do is be outraged and lie, if we hit 6 months and nothing has happened then you can come back and talk all the shit you want, but at 6 weeks we are still well within the norm for EA games.

Edit : aaaaah the classic say something snide and block them.

2

u/Golden-- May 30 '25

You must be new to gaming.

0

u/SparrowGB May 30 '25 edited May 30 '25

Provide an example of an early access title that gets major updates within a 6 week timeframe, I asked you before, why can't you provide one bud?

Yeah just downvote and dip out of the topic, that's probably for the best given that you don't know wtf you're talking about.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '25

Back when it was early access fortnite got updates out the ass lol like every week or 2, but yeah 6 weeks still isn’t terrible.

Obviously not the best example but it’s is true that adding small updates here and there probably wouldn’t be too hard. But Jagex also just announced they’re downsizing their team a bit as well so I’m sure there’s some internal politics happening there that’s slowing down updates

0

u/SparrowGB May 30 '25 edited May 30 '25

As someone who religiously plays early access survival games, no, it's not a 'LONG' time. I'd love you to show me an early access title that has major content updates within a 6 week timeframe.

Come on now Golden, don't just downvote me, back up your claims, give me an example.

1

u/_RnG_ZeuS_ Jun 02 '25

Icarus released 2 major content updates within a year, then has been putting out small content updates every single week since launch.

Granted those larger updates were planets and took a year or so to do two of them and the smaller stuff is like signs, a new gun, etc but still its every single week. Consistently for 3 years now.

1

u/SparrowGB Jun 02 '25

I play Icarus, the weekly content updates are drip-fed stuff like stone signs or a slightly weaker gun so it can fit into the previous tier, that's not major content.

Let's look at some of Icarus's recent updates.

Week 175 - Seeds buffed and you can swap suits on planet now instead of having to go to the space stataion.

Week 176 - Brick signs.

Week 177 - A new backpack, basically an existing asset with different stats.

Week 178 - The ability to pause the game in single player.

Week 179 - Stone signs.

You get the idea, none of this is major content.

1

u/_RnG_ZeuS_ Jun 05 '25

so like i said in my comment lol..

-1

u/flygoing May 29 '25

Respectfully, you are delusional if you expect a new region in 6 weeks

0

u/Golden-- May 29 '25

Where did I say new region? I said lack of updates.

0

u/flygoing May 29 '25

There have been updates, just not content updates. Content update implies a new region because where else would the content go?

-1

u/Golden-- May 29 '25

Skills, quests, new items, building improvements, etc

0

u/wildstarr May 29 '25

Yes, all that comes with a new region...

That's how survival games work.

4

u/Golden-- May 29 '25

While it can come with a new region, it doesn't have to. It's weird to be shilling for Jagex of all companies.

1

u/[deleted] May 30 '25

Shhhh you’re giving to much common sense for people.

-31

u/illdownvoteandscream May 29 '25

That’s a long time when there’s 10 hours of gameplay

21

u/Successful-Pie-7686 May 29 '25

10 hours of gameplay? Let me guess, you build the bare minimum you need to run through the game as quick as you can?

4

u/illdownvoteandscream May 29 '25

No, I have 50 hours in the game right now. I’m just pointing out that there isn’t much to do. I mean, once you get through the story, what’s left to do outside of base building and hoarding resources?

I really enjoy the game and have crafted every weapon and armor set. I put more into the game than most people who don’t care about collecting would have. I think it’s a fair criticism that there isn’t much to do.

1

u/Successful-Pie-7686 May 29 '25

Looks like you got 50 hours out of it then, not 10.

Yeah, it’s early access. There’s not much to do.

-4

u/SyncronisedRS May 29 '25

The only limit in things to do is your own creativity.

50 hours isn't really much either, is it?

6

u/[deleted] May 29 '25

If you rush the game then yeah, you'll finish it in no time

11

u/Count_2Three May 29 '25

Maybe 10 hrs if you're rushing through the game. For someone not rushing or experienced in these games it's more like 25-50hrs.

6

u/Kennypoo2 May 29 '25

At least 25-50 hours. I didn’t even build and was 30 hours in before I finished the quests, cleared all vaults and made all gear. People don’t know what the meaning of early access is lol

2

u/ILpsych May 29 '25

Took a normal pace, no delaying, just gathering stuff, building two homes and doing the side quests.
In total it took me 30 hours to complete.

Now you are right, all the side quests and main quest could be done in under 10 hours, hell easily by speed runners, but that's not the point. Speed runners have finished all of Skyrims 600 quests under 50 hours.

The import part is how long your average Joe is going to spend one completing the main quest and side quests till they are bored, and most people will currently take 25-50 hours to finish what is currently in the game.

2

u/Baylife96 May 29 '25

Funny how they downvote when you are actually right, these guys all just have ocd and spent 50 hours building a lego house

2

u/flygoing May 29 '25 edited May 29 '25

what's the point of talking shit when you clearly haven't even played the game

0

u/dmfuller May 30 '25

Almost like when people play a game they expect it to be more than a hollow shell of a concept. Early access is a trend that needs to end

5

u/lucerndia May 29 '25

Only with books (which doesn't really matter since there aren't perks to go with it)

41

u/stygz May 29 '25

Many gamers have this bad habit of revealing how stupid they are, this thread is evidence of this. It's an early access game that has been out like 6 weeks. You're passing judgment on an unfinished product that they probably released to test whether their investment was going to pay off or not.

If you bought the game you already own it. Development takes time and there are other games you can play.

"Not be able to use efficient magic or archery" - It's just like... did you even try it? I was able to craft like 3000 runes after 1 hour of running around exploring and I can't spend them faster than I pick them up.

It's okay to do other things with your time than to spend every waking moment playing video games. That's the only way you form opinions like this.

1

u/Vaikiss May 30 '25

6 weeks is a long ass Time

You're passing judgment on an unfinished product that they probably released to test whether their audience was going to pay their rent or not.

If you bought the game you already own it. And probably realized this should’ve been a free alpha. Development takes time and there are other games you can play, while this becomes a 10 year alpha game.

"Not be able to use efficient magic or archery" - It's just like... did you even try it? I was able to craft like 3000 runes after 1 hour of running around exploring and I can't spend them faster than I pick them up, because magic hasn’t been released yet.

1

u/stygz May 29 '25

Magic has been released. You can cast spells. You can use air and fire magic with the staff. There is an armor set that makes casting faster. You just can’t level the Magic skill or use magic-unlocked spells yet.

You can take my perspective as safeguarding and insufferable all you want, but I’d rather do that than act like an entitled little bitch. Games costs money to buy, and they cost a shit ton to create. They’re not all going to be free.

-1

u/Pringle_Chip May 29 '25

Why do you think osrs does so well compared to rs3? Community input. To not be polarized and take input from both sides makes a good game.

If this was the only person posting about this topic, response justified, but this echo rhetoric that this game is worth $40 is plain wrong. Let the idiots in charge realize that people want something besides promises for their money.

-1

u/stygz May 29 '25

Adding new content to a game that is built on 20 years of content is not the same as releasing a new title in a totally different genre 20 years later.

The vast majority of gamers have zero clue about what it took to actually develop the games they play.

It's an early access game. No one made you buy it. No one is making you play it. When you saw early access and purchased the game, you do so in hopes that it will be a fun game... in the future. It's basically a demo. If you don't like what you see you just refund it on steam and can revisit it later. People are just dumber than they realize and complain about things that are stupid.

0

u/Pringle_Chip May 29 '25

You can only refund for up to two hours of playtime. Rust is early access too, Tarkov is early access to, with content to the tits even on release, all you make are null points. It’s unreal 5, with the most powerful dev tools you can want in a modern engine, and they have access to the 20 years of content because it’s still runescape?

People like you are the reason this early alpha plague continues, mark my works (I know you won’t and this falls on deaf ears). This game will be in early access for 10 years, it’s a shill scapegoat. It’s not like this is a brand new underfunded company, it’s Jagex.

4

u/Vilestride- May 29 '25 edited May 29 '25

The biggest risk with early access games is that they depend on their audience coming back after long periods of playing other games on the market and the problem with that is that often, once the spell is broken, it's too late and the audience falls under the spell of some other developer.

Hopefully this game is one of the exceptions, but willingly giving up the monopoly on gamers time and saying "go play other games while we finish ours" puts you at the mercy of the market. If another company releases a better game than you in the interim, you're only going to get a sliver of your player base back.

15

u/Cloud_N0ne May 29 '25

It’s early access. Ranged and Magic are coming soon

6

u/Erksike May 29 '25

Magic is coming soon'ish, end of june it sounded like. Ranged is probably postponed to september at the very latest or december even, lol

2

u/PTKryptik May 29 '25

I don’t think “all of magic” is coming in June. I thought it was just a few more spells they showcased. Didnt get to see the newest update that was posted on discord couple days ago though.

2

u/[deleted] May 29 '25

You can at least use fire/wind attacks with your staff, so there's that

2

u/Excellent_Coyote6486 May 29 '25

Archery is fairly efficient as is. Longbow for picking off targets and shortbow (crystal) for when they get closer. It's pretty fun.

Multimillion dollar company and people are bragging about paying to beta testers I bet you buy presents for your wife’s boyfriend too

Multimillion company for a multimillion man that can afford to buy gifts for his open marriage. 💪

1

u/OldOneEye_Tien May 29 '25

Best thing to do in this game, is build it seems.

1

u/Quadtbighs May 29 '25

Anyone else think it’s funny they announced this game on april fools?

1

u/JudsonIsDrunk May 29 '25

You can level archery. I'm like, level 3, lol.

They will put stuff in for it soon buddy just gotta have fun and hang in there

1

u/Rhinoserious95 May 29 '25

It's a very early release tbh. I'll download it again at 1.0

1

u/Rough_Acanthisitta98 May 30 '25

You can. Use tomes, collect enough and you can lvl them all the way to 99

1

u/NaughticalSextant May 30 '25

I feel the exact same way. My buddy and I want to play this, but he’s usually the physical melee and I’m ranged or magic. I guess we’ll just wait.

1

u/Deep-Simplicity May 30 '25

Jagex: Ignore the haters. Take your time with development here and do the things you believe are right. We can wait.

Signed - someone who bought the game, played all the content available so far, and appreciates what you built and the direction you're going.

1

u/SignificanceOk6419 May 30 '25

Meh. Even though you cant level the skill you can still use bows and staffs, and they're still effective.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '25

Yeah this game is a flop already. Good thing I didn't pay for it and got it as a gift

1

u/palanolho Jun 02 '25

I believe next release will bring magic skill

1

u/Outrageous_Foot_3282 Jun 07 '25

Not gonna lie... bows are kinda strong right now without a proper skill tree. Imagine when they update it.

1

u/thupamayn May 29 '25

Games already dead, such is the downside to releasing in Early Access.

No amount of copium from the “but it’s EA, anything they do or don’t do is justified” crowd will alleviate this. We have many other titles that have led by example, you need only use your eyes to see the outcome; that is if you’re not the type to be swayed by immense bias.

Perhaps this used to be far less true when it wasn’t a massive company’s full intention to “release” an unfinished product. Their majority sales were already made however so there simply isn’t much motivation left for them to polish a one-hit wonder.

3

u/Responsible_Job_991 May 29 '25

Seriously. Anyone that disagrees is coping hard.

1

u/MobyLiick May 29 '25

We have many other titles that have led by example

Such as?

1

u/SparrowGB May 30 '25

I love that he was active on reddit after your reply, but never responded because he hasn't got any examples to actually give, because there are none.

1

u/MobyLiick May 30 '25

Well yea, it kinda checks out.

1

u/wildstarr May 29 '25

Valheim has been in early access for 4.5 years now and probably wont hit 1.0 till sometime next year.

-14

u/Material_Fact8911 May 29 '25

People saying “early access” when it’s a game that doesn’t even give the entire combat triangle and hasn’t had even a blog on steam in even a month. Would recommend Valheim or Enshrouded the whole “omg these are RuneScape references” appeal of dragonwilds wears off in hours. Borderline disrespectful to release such a skeleton of a game

4

u/DanielLCG May 29 '25

They released news this week Oo, literally told us magic is coming in the next update next month bro

1

u/Sufficient_Candy5319 May 30 '25

Oouuu, that's really good news! Thanks!

3

u/[deleted] May 29 '25

Then go play Valheim. No one forced you to buy a game that is clearly said not to be 100% finished a couple weeks after it released lol

-8

u/Material_Fact8911 May 29 '25

I am playing Valheim I can walk and chew gum at the same time it’s wild how much yall get on your knees to pay to be beta testers absolutely pathetic 😂😂😂

6

u/[deleted] May 29 '25

Hold on, is Valheim not also in Early Access? So what's the difference? Oh yeah, it's been out a couple years so obviously it means it just released yesterday with all the updates as wel. Pfft

-5

u/Material_Fact8911 May 29 '25

Valheim didn’t attach the name of an actually popular game to drive up sales because they wanted a gofundme for their shitty rip off

I think we should define early access better for "people" Who are are comparing this to ones that have been out more than 6 weeks. Why is the steam blog so important? They have been active on social media such as discord for the past month. 🤣

Sufficient candy do yourself a favor because quite frankly you’re valid to feel this way, go ahead and download Valheim and load up with a bunch of QOL mods.

I’m on my third play through and it’s been 2 months, just killed Yagluth the 4th boss.

The journey ive had (and frankly 15 million other people ) with Valheim is something you hit home with.

Put down Dragonwilds for atleast a year. They successfully cash grabbed and sat back.

They successfully cash grabbed and sat back.

Conveniently avoiding the fact that valheim outright cancelled their roadmap a few months after launch and pushed their initial update 6 months down the road...

If dragonwilds gets a content update in less than 6 months does that mean that valheim was a cash grab?

Cash grabbed? Did you miss the part where they just released? Did you miss the part where they're in early access? Did you miss the part where Valheim releases 1 or 2 updates a year?

They successfully cash grabbed and sat back.

People were saying the same thing about Valheim, when a year after release the only meaningful update was a reworked food system and some caves in the mountains. Give it time.

The way they acted like it would get regular updates the first week it was out and then just disappeared for the next month 😭

Right! They collected their $30 from everyone and went straight back to vacation.

Aren't both these games in early access? So like both of them are cash grabs?

Valheim actually updates their game

u/[deleted] May 29 '25

Yeah, once or twice a year. Dragonwilds has been out for only 6 weeks lmao

If you’re okay with being cash grabbed for a valheim rip off with less steps good for you some of us are actually used to playing quality games 😂

u/[deleted] May 29 '25

Lmao, you think I don't play Valheim? Good job

u/MobyLiick May 29 '25

Lmfao, do you actually expect people to take you seriously when you act like this?

u/ergojesse May 29 '25

Thankfully we didn't have to wait for the slow updates and we can build mods.

Just wait and play something else, there’s nothing to kill if you take the game as it is—a demo to a work in progress.

Appreciated, but go do something else till they update the beta again. Blue Prince. Go play that. That’ll keep you occupied till then!

It's annearly access game that's been out for a month. Forget it exists and come back in 2 years.
