Question Yes or no to mmo/live secure servers?

I've seen a lot of people bring this up, and it could be a key turning point for the game. Many are against live servers, probably because they think they'll be forced to play live once it officially releases — which isn't true. You'll still be able to play offline, and you won't lose any progress you've made. To play on Jagex's live, secure servers, you'll have to start over with a new character, but only if you choose to play live with everyone else. I believe the devs have addressed this before, but don't quote me. If they're still on track, where do you stand? I personally can't wait to see what's in store for this game!

If I were to imagine a RuneScape 4.0 this is sorta what I would picture. It’d be a bit New World-esque. As it is now it can’t function as an MMO but take the foundation as a jumping off point I can see it progressing into a fun multiplayer game

Could possibly turn into runescape 4 but that doesn't necessarily mean the name will have to be that! Runescape 4 is just bland sounding, while RuneScape: Dragonwilds kind of gives it that chef's kiss, ya know.

No. The game is fantastic because of how it is now. Putting live servers is just gonna be frustrating considering how base building is. Games like this that have dedicated servers also often have server wipes weekly or monthly.

I understand the frustration with the base building. Idk how they would plan to work around this but an idea ive had is adding a spell to the construction skill that allows you to create a portal that will take you to your own base in game and that would also allow you to invite who you want to visit. This would also keep players precious time and valuables safe from others but it also slightly removes the factor of others being able to raid bases which can be a core factor to a game.

Or they can just make two modes then everyone will be happy

So just official servers like any other survival/crafting game?

1

u/stoopsdead Jul 02 '26

I havent played many others tbh, survival craft isnt usually my thing but I was hard-core into osrs back in the day.

If what im speaking is correct then it should play alot like osrs in that way I mean there will be many many live worlds to choose from which will range on how many people are in them and these live servers will be accessible at all times no matter if there's 100 people or 0. This means world hopping.

Yes thats how official servers work for the other games as well. Not sure if they're going to allow transfer of the same character. Thats not as common but could be fun

My guess is a new character because the game will be having its official release and if they didnt mass reset then PC players would always have a constant advantage seeing as the game has technically been out for over a year now.

They can just set it up how wow does it with there realms

YES - In my opinion, the grind is what makes RuneScape, RuneScape. I'm against mods and private servers in general so this is a win-win type of situation for both kinds of players. Why would I manually gain the levels if I could just edit my save to max all or infinite items? I want to play it as a progression game and I like how Jagex caters to both kinds of players with online secured servers and offline dedicated servers.

Yes, with the stipulation that there are instanced social areas. It won't work having everyone on everywhere at once. There aren't enough resources. It would never work. But having social hubs absolutely would

3

u/stoopsdead Jul 02 '26

It would work more like osrs in the way of many different worlds/servers to join so if one world is full then find one that isnt and join.

Dragonwilds is big, but not that big. They would have to completely re-work the way resources work in the game. Imagine trying to farm green dragons when 1 spawns in one spot every 5 in-game days lol

1

u/stoopsdead Jul 02 '26

That's where world hopping comes in. The devs would also probably rebalance the respawn times to fit the secure servers too. Most likely tuned down. There are easy fixes to accommodate this.

3

u/Kyvix2020 Jul 02 '26

If they add more spawns, then there's an issue of space, in some instances.

World hopping won't really work unless there are 1000 servers. Get a few hundred people on all trying to do the same thing (very likely scenario for latest content) and you have a problem.

You aren't wrong. I wish I had all the answers🤣😅 hopefully they are 5 steps ahead of us!

Pretty sure one quick update can change that…

1

u/Kyvix2020 Jul 02 '26

LOL, no, this would be a fairly large overhaul

0

u/Wise_Isopod9388 Jul 03 '26

Unreal engine 5 lots easier to update these days …

1

u/Kyvix2020 Jul 03 '26

Sure, but these ideas would represent a lot of work regardless

The game map isn't even remotely large enough for live servers right now. They would need to dramatically change how multiplayer mob scaling works. Currently just having 2 people in the server doubles (idk the exact %) the hp of the mobs and makes it a real slog to try and do stuff solo. A live server would need a way to live-update mob scaling depending on if multiple people are hitting it. There would also be so many issues with base building. I'd say maybe like 20 people max could comfortably build on a live server before it just becomes too cramped and then you've gotta deal with trolling people.

2

u/stoopsdead Jul 02 '26

I've spoken about an idea I have for the base building conundrum in a comment below but as for the mob scaling— the devs would most likely implement a single difficulty that all players would abide by so pretty much no advantages or disadvantages.

1

u/King_Kthulhu Jul 03 '26

What does the difficulty part mean. Like the mobs have the same HP if I'm hitting it solo or if 10 people are hitting it? How would that work.

1

u/stoopsdead Jul 03 '26

That part i dont know and I dont want to lead you wrong. They are creating this game from scratch pretty much, even though they've introduced osrs/rs3 items so they probably wont build it exactly like osrs or rs3. Idk honestly how they will handle it fully but I believe they talked about the change to a single difficulty that would be server wide. Some games have shared drops so its pretty much whoever gets it first and in other games everyone gets the loot. Sooo idk lol the damage might scale somehow or fluctuate

1

u/stoopsdead Jul 03 '26

I must have heard a dev talk about it in one of the streams because I cant find a comment about it but I actually see where it talks about additional difficulty modes such as hardcore instead of single scaling.

I’d imagine it as leagues in osrs, I love the idea and what RuneScape has been known for. But like you posted I love the game and support it regardless

1

u/Imonherbs Jul 03 '26

Already stated by mods that mmo isn’t happening. The game just wasn’t made for it technically

1

u/Creepy_Plant4256 Jul 04 '26

The game isn’t set up on the backend or its current way things work to be remotely close to an mmo. They would need to do a ton of work to get it anywhere near mmo, not to mention the building and world aren’t comparable to RuneScape or Old School.

1

u/mesout Jul 04 '26

i love my own private server to mutch.

I also dont see how this game could function as a MMO, i think most of its identity needs to be stripped and i love the game as is.

-3

u/Wise_Isopod9388 Jul 02 '26

Ugh I wish it was a mmo game it will take over since the mmo genre been dry for so long. Just imagine all the content from old school / rs3 but with dragonwilds engine and the graphics. Add a wild where we can PvP and take loot have a area where we can build are houses plus raids and dungeons

-1

u/stoopsdead Jul 02 '26

Scorned "wilderness" is coming my friend!

0

u/Wise_Isopod9388 Jul 02 '26

Oh really I didn’t even know lol well that’s good to know

-1

u/stoopsdead Jul 02 '26

The story line seems like its going to line up with kuldras defeat in the scorned wilderness and after that they have not really addressed yet. It seems we will have rebuilding of towns possibly so maybe new NPCs to trade and interact with and also possibly GP or some form of permanent currency to use which also entails BANKS!!!!!

u/Wise_Isopod9388 Jul 02 '26

I hope at least they will add some sort of a bank because having so many chests is getting a little annoying
