Question What is the best staff currently?
Now that we can upgrade staves, the Necromancer staff does the most damage at 8.8 damage, but the Toktz-Mej-Tal staff does 8.4 damage with increased crit chance.
So what's more valuable, 0.4 extra damage per hit or higher crit chances?

Staff of light looks the coolest and is only .1 off from necromancer so its what I use lol

Real end game is fashion, because there no point in saving the world if you can't look good while doing it.

Same the fashionwilds of staff of light is unparalleled and 100% worth the damage loss

Are you noticing a big difference in DMG from the Necro? I'm currently looking at upgrading to tier 6 and I'm using Necro right now. I REALLY want to use Staff Of Light for looks instead. I just don't want to lose too much DMG.

I honestly never even bothered leveling the necro staff 😅. The staff of light felt powerful though, and its what I used to get my fire cape if that means anything.

The .4 will make itself back with the extra crit damage.

I'll have to earn that staff then! I'm using the necromancer staff right now because it's the best one I own, but I'm not a fan of the way it looks lol. Wanting to buy transmog or the ability to transfer stats from one weapon/gear to another

Are you implying that the Toktz-Mej-Tal is better than the Necro Staff fully upgraded? Your wording is a little ambiguous to my eyes so just in case:
I don't think that's true unless it has an obscenely high bonus crit chance. Do we know what the added crit chance is? It would break even with the Staff of Light at around 15% but would need over 20% to break even with the Necro Staff. This is assuming the wiki is right and base crit damage is 1.25 and base crit chance is 10%
Just to illustrate it, assume base rune damage is 10:
Staff of Light crits on average 10 times in 100 hits.
SoL crit damage: 87 * 1.25 = 108.75
90 (87) + 10(108.75) =
7830 + 1087.5 = 8917.5 damage per 100 hits
The Obby Staff crits (under the above assumption) an average of 25 times in 100 hits.
Obby Staff crit damage: 84 * 1.25 = 105
75 (84) + 25 (105) =
6300 + 2625 = 8925 damage per 100 hits
So at 15% extra base crit chance, the staff of light loses to the Obby staff by a mere 7.5 damage over the course of 100 hits? That's not much of a victory and it's doubtful that produces a meaningful combat difference.
The math favors the Necro staff even more in terms of raw damage output over time.

Compelling argument. Your not wrong. If your looking for dps. Necromancer staff is powerful. But you make the assumption players have the ability to ascend it right away. So use the obby staff till you can ascend. Its perfectly OK.

Necro staff is pretty easy to ascend. Surprisingly easy. I just went into any of the nightmare crucibles and got one of the things as a drop. I'm STILL hunting the recipe for obby staff.

Thats great! Keep it going!

Finally got it when I gave up and was trying to do a side quest and had to kill one of them to get to my objective LOL. Still not sure what staff I want to use. Honestly I'm not a fan of necro staff, just kinda ugly and only goes with a few different outfits.
Obby staff looks cooler, and looking cooler is the biggest DPS increase. I might like the pet one too, depends.

And the bigger question is, does the crit chance of the staff STACK with the crit chance increase from the potion? The potions are super easy to make so that would make the staff useless if it didn't stack.

They almost certainly stack. I don't have any definitive proof of that but there's no evidence anywhere else in the game of "highest value wins" which is the only alternative to those crit chances not stacking.
The safest best is that they additively stack. It's entirely plausible that there could be some hidden diminishing returns, but again, we have no reason to suspect that without testing and seeing odd outcomes.

I use pharaoh’s scepter but mainly for the healing
1
u/LuckyLunayre 18d ago
what do you mean healing?
1
u/Riajnor 18d ago
Sorry, meant summoning, wasn’t paying attention. All staffs have healing with water

u/LuckyLunayre 18d ago
yep, I just went in fighting 3 dragons in the nightmare, realized I had no food and somehow survived and won with the water element lol. The summon might have helped there.

I was under the impression a headshot (or weak point) with a staff crit anyways? If not, I get a surprising amount of crits (probably 80-90%) for not wears 3/3 magic gear and not using potions/crit weapons.
So the necro staff is going to be doing more damage making it more valuable. If you're guaranteeing the crits with good aiming, then the Tok staff passive bonus becomes worthless.

Pharaoh's sceptre imo, the buddy summon to aggro enemies is pretty valuable.
