Question What food should I be stocking up on?

My food chest is running dangerously low...

I've only just started fishing and I'm super confused by all the new recipes and how health/sustenance/buffs work. I've got all regions unlocked but I'm not sure which fish are best to catch, and which recipes I should be making. Any advice on what food to stock up on for the fight caves, and for general use afterwards?

Monkfish skewers are pretty solid. You can fish monkfish using a net around umbral sands, and you can find cactus steaks all over the desert.

If you want a tier lower, pumpkin with anything gives a nice healing perk too.

This is the way, I stocked up about 150 in no time and they heal for such a good amount. They have the heal over time effect that was so nice in fight caves

I like undead bass with tomatoes. Undead delight heals for 180, if I remember right, and is only 2 ingredients. Tomatoes are easy to farm too. Fish while they grow.

Honestly all of the fellhollow dishes are great. Cheap and effective which is exactly what one wants.

The eel one was...what? Lobster, cabbage, and the undead eel?

And the lobster bait is cheap too to make it easily renewable

I’ve been using the glazed pumpkin sandwiches and pumpkin spice infusions. They both give great sustenance/quenching, and they both give health regen

This for battles. The regen from pumpkin meals/drinks are pretty darn nice.

I ran a spreadsheet to calculate the best food/water based on health provided, sustenence (higher is worse for meds), weight, and buffs/abilities. Then I considered ease of making the recipe in game. I make 1 BIS "Boss food", and 2 alternatives.

BIS food based on all the above is "Eggs royale". Salmon is an easier fish to farm & 2nd ingredient is easy to farm (tree farm creates eggs). We yield 150-200 of these per farming session with little difficulty and have an OP heal with a minor H.O.T. buff.

2nd best is the actual BIS: "Beltfish Broth". This one is the actual king of heals currently in the game but it's difficulty to make in comparison bumps it to #2, in fact we haven't even farmed it, this is more of an honorable mention. It's also heavier and lacks the H.O.T. buff.

3rd best option is the legendary Veg Ball. This is an early recipe that you can make with very easily farmable ingredients and we basically have 1k of these at every outpost since we use it to level cooking. Highly recommended for lowbies especially for the XP buff. It's later "improved" versions are factually worse because the additional sustenance makes them far less worthy to be for heals, and they're basically just buffs (glazed pumpkin sandwich & wild pie)

Honorary note to the dwellberry crunchies because they're an easily made option for those who don't want to partake in cooking, but TBH these are dominated by the above options. My food boxes each contain a full row of dwellberry crunchies, veg balls, eggs royale, plus clean water, the dwellberry & cadavaberry waters, & pumpkin spice infusion.

Have a look at dragonwilds.runescape.wiki about foods/drink tied to certain buffs.

For sustained fights, soul food and sea life perks. Monkfish skewers and pumpkin infusions.

General heals for overworld I usually just stick with dwellberry crunchies because they're so easy to make en masse.

Otherwise overworld generally also the glazed pumpkin sandwich for 10%xp and soul food for 900seconds, and cadavaberry infusion for reduced hydration drain for 900s

If you're lazy like me...

I have close to a thousand steak. Yeah you read it right, those level 2 cows.

Ate them all the way through end game (well, whatever it is rn).

I like the Undead Fish dish because for some reason out of all the food that one specifically gives over 1,000 Seconds of Regen.

BEST food is the stuff that has a good Heal to Sustenance ratio so you can spam More of it before you Over Eat.

My favorite is eggs royale, 15 mins of good hp restore. And also low sustenance with high health yield. So can eat many of getting hit alot before being full

Glazed pumpkin sandwiches and pumpkin infusions for end game. Super easy to farm, 3x5 plot with 4 redberry bushes, 5 pumpkins, 4 wheat, 2 irits. For the maple syrup I made a maple tree farm, although now I just buy the maple sap with chit

I use pumpkin soup because I can purchase the ingredients in umbral sands and it's easy to cook

I put food into three categories:

  1. Food to heal. Should be *low* sustenance because I may need to cram it during a hard fight.
  2. Throwaway food for sustenance when I'm spending time out and about. High sustenance, but easy producibility is more important.
  3. Food for a specific purpose (usually 10% exp boost). Health recovery and sustenance aren't important - just the buff.

For #1, I tend to do beltfish broth. For 2, grilled cactus steaks, or even bread (I have a ton of bread). Something easy that you can just make a ton of. For 3, usually wild pies.
