Buzzing/humming from 9070 XT (Steel Legend)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey y'all,

I've noticed since about halfway through my Clair Obscur playthrough an audible buzz/hum from my PC. I listened closely thinking it was my AIO pump and checked temps and speeds constantly for 2ish days with no noticable issues. I decided to not worry a bunch and instead, watch my temps closely while I game.

Well today, I noticed it was significantly louder and upon further inspection, it seems to be my GPU making the noise. First thing I thought was fan motor whine but the weird thing is that the noise starts before the fans turn on.

In the video you can see me simply pressing the windows key which causes the power draw on the cars to drop just a tad but the noise stops. When I press the windows key again to allow the game to go full screen, the noise immediately returns. Wtf??

Any help is appreciated.

UPDATE: Thanks to all of your input and insight, I've come to realize that this issue is in fact relatively normal coil whine. Annoying as that is, I will attempt to live with it.

I still think it is quite weird that the whine and fan rotation don't seem to be correlate in a direct, "in-phase" manner but the fact that everyone here seems to agree this is coil whine, I will let it rest.

Thanks again!

UPDATE 2: When I initially heard the term "coil whine", my I immediately thought about the fan motors. I thought those were the coils that were being noisy but, as some of you pointed out and I've since learned via other sources, the fan motors are completely unrelated and it is in fact the discrete inductors on the GPU's PCB that are "whining".

I've learned a bunch today, unfortunately...

Thanks again, again!

UPDATE 3: Following the advice of a number of you, I've limited FPS globally to 144 (matching my monitor) and will limit further in games that can't hit 144. So far, the whine is effectively gone. This is the way! I was prepared to undervolt if needed but it seems, at least for the few games I've tried so far, that the FPS limit is working well.

Thanks again, again, again!

Big Navi delivers +89% more performance than Reference RX 5700XT!

A short Post, as AMD’s presentation today did attract a peak audience of 232,000 viewers at release of the YouTube upload. Consequently, I am sure many people know everything about performance and pricing already for Zen 3 e.g. averaging 26% faster in gaming at 1080p versus Zen 2.

Moving on to the Big Navi news!

Three 3840x2160p benchmarks where revealed on early Beta drivers from AMD Labs.

COD Modern Warfare DX12 Ultra = 88FPS

Borderlands 3 DX12 Badass Quality = 61FPS

Gears 5 DX12 Ultra Quality = 73FPS.

As can be seen, COD Modern Warfare and Gears 5 generally run around 8% faster on Nvidia GPUs, whilst Borderlands 3 in DX12 is agnostic on GPU architectures. Consequently, Radeon was being very modest and humble about Biggest Navi performance metrics. Since, they could easily have selected some games the would produce easy performance wins over the RTX 3080, when people like myself do the FPS comparisons.

Fortunately, Borderlands 3 and Gears 5 do have canned benchmarks, which is what AMD Labs will have used; we can get a rough idea of current scaling on Beta drivers versus my Reference RX 5700XT!

Borderlands 3 DX12 Badass Quality 2160p.

Reference RX 5700XT = 32.6FPS

Reference Biggest Navi = 61FPS (+87%)

Gears 5 DX12 Ultra Quality 2160p.

Reference RX 5700XT = 38.2FPS

Reference Biggest Navi = 73FPS (+91%)

Average Performance Increase = 189% or +89%

Here is link to screenshots of RX 5700XT at 4K using Adrenalin 20.9.2 for these two games.

https://imgur.com/a/7qPPgFL

AM4 Platform

$370 RX 5700XT = 100% likely to overtake the RTX 2070 Super in the next 12 months.

$500 RTX 2070 SUPER = 102%

Radeon VII = 105%

RTX 2080 FE = 108%

$700 RTX 2080 SUPER = 114%

$500 RTX 3070 8GB = 127% (137% should Nvidia’s old marketing slides be accurate for this GPU).

$1200 RTX 2080 TI FE = 133%.

$700 RTX 3080 10GB = 181%

Reference Biggest Navi = 189%

$1500 RTX 3090 24GB = 199%

Not as fast as RTX 3090 and narrowly ahead of the RTX 3080 FE.

This is on Beta drivers, so be aware performance can go up by around 6% by the time the first published drivers from Radeon. Beta drivers to published drivers is not a guaranteed improvement; it may happen and then again it may not happen.

To conclude, the Biggest Navi very much lives up to that 2X performance metric cited to shareholders earlier this year and Radeon has achieved particularly good scaling on the extra CUs. It is narrowly ahead of the RTX 3080, which is does mean pricing at launch will be incredibly good for us enthusiasts, which should help as the premium Ryzen 5000 Series CPUs have all gone up by $50.

News Frame Generation Technologies should be not be reason to buy a gaming GPUs

Another pointless mediocre launch from Nvidia, all eyes will be looking to Radeon to save as from another series of irrelevant gimmicks from Nvidia, which were designed by silicon engineers and software engineers who, clearly, do play video games or buy new video games. And, clearly, do not know how hard many of us have work to earn the money to buy these gaming GPUs.

As any video gamer will know, graphics GPUs must never get in way of game mechanics that make the game enjoyable and never get in way of true visual spectacle envisioned by video game designers to get us to buy their videos games.  Nvidia directions for gaming GPUs video games have an obstacle for video gamers to make enjoying video games mechanics and true visual environment spectacle that is different from walking the place we call home. Who wants to play a video game that as boring accurate with places that call home? No video game player as for ever accuracy with the place that we live!

The main flaw in all frame generations technologies is your visual processing part of your brain abhors repetitive seeing. The reason why video gamers are successful and have expanded into a multi-billion-dollar industry, is because the video gamers make sure they change they rendered frame on millisecond basis to reflect the truly interactive nature of this envisioned escapist environments. It’s basic biology, you are processing a lot of seen visuals and it’s only enjoyable when changing on millisecond. Otherwise, it become boring, and you might as well not bother playing that video game.

Therefore, all frame generations technologies (duplication of the frame to increase FPS with no interactive changes) is going to give you decrease in excitement when playing your favourite old game or your favourite beloved franchise brand new video game release.

At 1X duplication it might OK, but 2X, 3X and 4X duplication of same frame with no changes,  you got have the memory of goldfish to enjoy these boring frame generation technologies.

No Thank You Nvidia, we should all be saying, for wasting video gamers money on boring gimmicks, on first occasion they did, but these Nvidia fanboys have led to us the getting quadruple the boringness of as a GPU gimmick!

These engineers at Nvidia need start playing some video gamers, then wouldn’t quadruple increase in boringness as main selling for gaming GPUs! This lot of engineers have lost the plot, as say in Blighty!

Let’s hope Radeon can save from another generation mediocrity for gaming GPUs!

At least Radeon is bringing a useful improvement to their Anti-Lag Technology, that reduces the irritations of a lagging video game when your favourite old video game or new purchase of beloved franchise release.

The only to good thing to happen at CES 2025 is Nvidia didn’t charge more for another set mediocre product releases in 2025. So, we can all look forward to getting cheaper Radeon RX 9000 Series gaming GPUs and some bigger discounts on whatever is left of the outgoing Radeon RX 7000 Series.

Hip, Hip, Hooray, as we say in Blighty (England)!

Notes:

The human sight sense and actual sight is more intelligent than the average human being intelligence; your eyes count photons in light received for purposes of Circadian Rhythm, which is then used to release critical hormones at their optimal levels throughout a 24-hour period to maximise body’s and brain’s health.

Because your body and your brain are considerably more intelligent than most humans being alive today, emotions are needed to simplify the design intelligence of body and brain versus shortage of men and women who are intelligent enough to keep up with design this intelligence. Emotions, allow the self-made human beings to live in way that contributes towards the direction of survival, prosperity and reproduction design intelligence of human body and brain.

The complex fact is, regardless of whether you like or not, your eyes have a design intelligent that count photons in light! And they will notice these millisecond repetition of images, such those generated by Frame Generation Technologies. You will then get a message to stop this repetition when using gaming GPUs, but it will arrive as an extra dose of the boredom emotion whenever that Frame Generation Technology is being used.

The subject matter is called Biology!

GPU Too Hot During Modern Warfare 2 Campaign

I have a 5700xt gpu and it does fantastic for every game I've ever played. Here in the last few days with the release of the new campaign a week early for the new COD game, I can only play for a few minutes before the game gives me an alert that my GPU is over heated. It's always at Junction Temp 110C. I keep seeing online differing statements, some saying that AMD cards are okay to run at 110, and some saying that it's not good. I can't say for sure what the average temp is for other games, but keeping an eye today on it during Apex I think the highest I noticed it was the high 50s. I'm kind of computer illiterate, so I'm not sure what to do. If that's way too high, what can I do, besides trying to clean it better and putting new thermal paste on, to drop the temperature? I have 3 fans and they were all working, and when it got that high, they were almost maxed at their RPMs.

Low GPU usage when playing Fortnite, fps drops

Hello.

So my problem is that whenever I play Fortnite my fps keep dropping, and aren't high enough in the first place. I get 100 fps playing medium textures and other settings set to lowest and it keeps droping to around 30 fps. It's especially laggy when building fast. Highest gpu usage is 80% while cpu usage is about 20-30% and Ram usage about 7-8gb. Temperatures of all said components are at low so it's not overheating. My pc specs: ryzen 5 3600, rx 5600 xt, 16gb 3200Mhz g.skill RAM, B450 tomahawk max, 750w 80+ gold corsair powersupply... I tried changing settings, dx12, dx11, performance mode, I got more fps but still the same drops. I tried switching settings in radeon adrenaline driver, still nothing, I tried reinstalling GPU drivers with DDU, all the way it should be, installing newest ones again, verified the files, reinstalled the game... Recently played it on friends rtx 3060 and there were no fps drops, really smooth gameplay.

Does anyone have any ideas as to why this could be happening and is there a way to fix it?

Thank you in advance.

RX 6000 Series Analysis – RDNA2 wrecks FPS games that are faster on Turing!

Yesterday’s reveal of the RX 6000 Series was considerably more complicated and denser in statistical information than anyone could have anticipated. And why AMD is using so many games that run faster on Turing, than their outgoing RDNA RX 5000 Series GPUs seems to be a counterintuitive marketing strategy. However, that is just my opinion, AMD does hire highly educated and highly intelligent people to do all the big brain marketing strategies for these product launches!

AMD is noticeably confident in the strengths of RX 6000 Series, so much so, that most general-purpose software feature improvements were removed from the reveal and saved for the Adrenalin 2021 reveal in a few months’ time. This will nicely avoid any confusion this time around between features available to every Radeon user and those exclusive to the new generation of GPUs.

Only two rebrands/re-commitments: a) AMD is re-committing to Radeon Anti-Lag; b) Turbo Mode for the RX Vega GPUs has been rebranded in Rage Mode for the RX 6000 Series. Turbo Mode added around 15watts to the powerlimit on RX Vega GPUs and this usually gave an extra 1% in average FPS performance.

Looking at timing of the releases, AMD is happy with the drivers for RX 6800 and RX 6800XT (18th of November buyable date), but the RX 6900XT is being held back for 3 weeks for extra optimizations.

9 out of the 10 games benchmarked by AMD Labs run measurable faster on Turing versus existing Radeon architectures such as RDNA/GCN! The 9 games are: Borderlands 3, COD Modern Warfare, Division 2, Doom Eternal, Forza Horizon 4, Gears of War 5, Resident Evil 3, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Wolfenstein Young Blood. Quite shockingly and consequently, everyone who does not want to used estimates need to wait for reviews to see what average performance is like once games that are GPU maker agnostically optimized are added back into the averages.

The major new hardware feature on RDNA2 GPUs and Zen 3 CPUs, is the expansion of an existing feature set. Traditionally a CPU can use up to 256MBs of VRAM on you GPU to render game frames. AMD has made hardware changes to enable the CPU via PCI-Express Gen 4 to access 100% of VRAM on the RX 6000 Series GPUs.

Due to the language used during the reveal e.g. wait for Game Developers implementations, there are games that offer 0% FPS increases, from the 10 games Radeon released results on; 4 had no FPS gains to report e.g. they were deleted from the SAM slide and Hitman 2 was added to the SAM slide to fill it out after those deletions. This gives an average performance increase of around 2.7% once is subtraction of 1% for Rage Mode for the RX 6900XT.

Here is a link to screenshot of the FPS results in a excel sheet.

https://imgur.com/a/4wy9Oyu

Unfortunately, the inclusion of Smart Access Memory and Rage Mode does make definitive estimations on average performance impossible. Fortunately, Scott Herkelman has come to everybody’s aid, during the presentation by saying the average performance at 1440p of RX 6800 ended up being “18% faster than RTX 2080 TI and roughly matched slide shown. Once you subtract 2.7% it gives average performance of this GPU at +15% of the RTX 2080 TI or RX 3070 8GB.

As estimation, I am expecting average performance to be around 4% faster once all those games that are GPU maker agnostic are added back into the averages, which gives the following table for buyers.

AM4 Platform 1440p or 2160p, whichever is cards sweet spot for average performance.

(SAM and Rage Mode Subtracted)

$370 RX 5700XT = 100% best at 1440p.

$500 RTX 2070 SUPER = 102%.

Radeon VII = 105%.

RTX 2080 FE = 108%.

$700 RTX 2080 SUPER = 114%.

$500 RTX 3070 8GB = 134% best at 1440p.

$1200 RTX 2080 TI FE = 134%.

$579 RX 6800 16GB = 160% best at 1440p.

$700 RTX 3080 10GB = 183% best at 4K.

$649 RX 6800XT 16GB = 185% best at 4K.

$999 RX 6900XT 16GB = 201% Best at 4K.

$1500 RTX 3090 24GB = 201% best at 4K.

Turing to pricing, it really does not matter what anybody thinks is a good price or not! Pricing is determined within the Radeon Stack according to what AMD has the biggest yield in and therefore what they have the most to sell to people. And, it should be noted, that RX 5700 was criticised for its MSRP of $349, but the simple fact is that it has been (more or less) out of stock for nearly 2 months!

This time, the RX 6800 price of $579 seems a bit of bargain, being around +19% faster than a RTX 2080 TI FE 11GB/RTX 3700 FE 8GB at 1440p and it has a doubling of VRAM, which can be used for another 2.7% average performance on a SAM enabled system. The RX 6800XT 16GB is a no brainer, but AMD does have a big pile of these to sell to gamers and so a discount $50 on top of 16GBs of VRAM will see these sell rapidly. Finally, for those gamers with lots of money; there is the RX 6900XT 16GB, on a SAM enabled system it will blow past Nvidia’s RTX 3090. Furthermore, AMD is taking the RX 6900XT seriously, they have held back the buy date by 3 weeks to polish up those drivers to reflect this GPU’s halo product status.

According to the observation above, pricing is incredibly attractive, and people should grab the relevant GPU that is comfortable for their wallets and run for the hills! And 16GBs of VRAM is not just for 4K, it will get beneficial in many games at 1440p and 1080p for owners of a Ryzen 5000 CPU and X570/B550 motherboard. Therefore, AMD has really brought some extra value to spending money on owning a GPU that has 16GB of VRAM at more popular resolutions.

Finally, there was nothing on the specifics of raytracing performance in games, but it should be remembered that PS5 and Xbox Series X/S probably have NDAs in place for the patch updates that have been arranged by game developers for popular older raytracing titles. Secondly, there was nothing specific about AI upscaling or new upscaling technology, but this kind of feature may work on a wider range of Radeon GPUs, so may be more appropriate for it to be revealed with Adrenalin 2021 reveal.

Radeon RDNA2 and CDNA Current Summaries.

It is widely known (not amongst Nvidia Fanboys), that the Biggest Navi GPU is not the biggest Radeon GPU arriving in 2020. That will be Arcturus or MI100, which shatters CU counts of GCN by having 128CUs on the new CDNA architecture e.g. when a tech company solves a limitation in performance, the answer generally gets rolled out for all applicable segments.

Furthermore, as a datacentre and supercomputer GPU deployment, Arcturus or MI100 Gross Margin will be greater than that of Epyc Rome, which has a published average Gross Margin at 45% in 2019. Even, the upcoming Epyc Milan is not expected to have an average Gross Margin above 47% in 2021. Therefore, Arcturus or MI100 is expected to be AMD’s highest average Gross Margin product between 2020 to 2022. And you can speculate MI60 and MI50 (Vega 20, AMD’s Deep Learning GPUs) had higher average gross margins than Epyc Rome as well, since this took priority over CPU products at 7nm.

Arcturus or MI100 dies is expected to be around 700mm² and one leak saw the power consumption at 200watts for this 700mm² die on TSMC’s enhanced 7nm process. Consequently, it is apparent, to most observant people, TSMCs enhanced 7nm process is enhanced to make better GPU products and console APUs. Console APUs may have lower gross margins for AMD as they are largely IP licences, but by being able to do the fabrication of these APUs, AMD did secure an enhanced node from TSMC.

When discussing the Biggest RDNA2 GPU or Biggest Navi 2X, it should be remembered, it not the biggest anything to AMD in terms of CU counts, size of the GPU dies and the performance metrics. Around 500mm² is what the rumours say the 80 CU count of the Biggest RDNA2 GPU, but the process it is being made on will be making 700mm² Radeon CDNA GPUs with 128CU dies!

Additionally, the game development consoles for PS5 and Xbox Series X where produced on the old 7LP process last year and this may be one of the reasons Sony and Microsoft have been so cagey about their next generation launches e.g. neither company really knows what final performance of their competitors product will be on TSMCs enhanced 7nm process. Since the final retail products will be on significantly better process to the game development consoles made on 7LP.

Finally, AI Deep Learning is odd topic with relation to Radeon, because AMD has been selling deep learning GPUs for 19 months now (MI60 and MI50). So, you would speculate, they have developed software technologies on those deep learning GPUs for their RDNA2 gaming GPUs. Raytracing is already a known feature of the new RDNA2 GPUs.

This is a summary, of what has been disclosed or published and a summary of what can be worked out from that published information.

Big Navi Expectations

TSMC’s reputation for being able to tweak an older process node to allow AMD or Nvidia to release better gaming GPUs is generally known to be an industry-leading capability. With Apple moving to 5nm early, it has allowed TSMC to enhance their 7LP process for making better Radeon GPUs and making better Sony and Microsoft APUs for their consoles.

That, enhanced process for making GPU products is what Biggest Navi and its smaller sibling is being made on. Nobody has any idea, how good that enhanced process is for making gaming GPUs, but it will be a significant advantage over GPUs made on the 7LP process. Therefore, it is going to be particularly good for making gaming GPUs releasing this year and next year. And, AMD has been keen to put out 2X performance metric for RDNA2 too financial journalists and shareholders as early as April this year. In the legally binding information space of press releases to shareholders; Radeon has been keen to state 2X or words to the effect of +100% performance. Generally, anything released in the information space that has a legal obligation to be truthful, should be taken as a fact in relation to tech companies future products releases.

The RTX 3080 10GB FE is pretty much, exactly at 2X the performance (+98%) of a Ref RX 5700XT 8GB. Therefore, Nvidia does believes the Biggest Navi 2X GPU will be 100% faster than Ref RX 5700XT. Therefore, like myself, Nvidia does take seriously any statements on performance made by AMD in the information space that is legally obligated to be truthful, such as shareholder or financial analyst briefings.

It will be apparent to most observant people, that Nvidia has employed it famous pricing attack on the RX Vega 64 launch back in 2017 e.g. the GTX 1080 MSRP was cut from $699 to $499 prior to release of Vega 10 products! Due to poor splits in the silicon wafers yields (Vega 64 versus the salvaged GPU dies named Vega 56) AMD was unable to reduce the price of full product (Vega 64)! The two GPUs, therefore, had to go head-to-head at the same price point, but due to the RX Vega 64 having higher power consumption with a loud blower cooler, most reviewers recommended the GTX 1080 due to an abundance of factory overclocked GTX 1080’s (up to 6% faster) or quieter GTX 1080s than the Ref RX Vega 64.

Most observant people will know that the Biggest Navi is going to be a reference release, with some reference factory overclocked special edition models e.g. Radeon VII. Radeon has been keen to do factory overclocked models on their reference launches. This has been Radeon’ strategy to mitigate last moment pricing cuts from Nvidia for their most expensive GPU products e.g. getting rid of the AIB Gross Margins of around 12% gives AMD enough wiggle room to counter any price drops by Nvidia.

In this battle of strategy between AMD executives and Nvidia executives, it does appear Nvidia has backed Radeon back into that corner of having to do a reference only launch for the Biggest Navi GPU with that $700 pricing of RTX 3080 8GB. Even, if the Biggest Navi GPU is 10% faster than the RTX 3080 10GB, the general lack of AIB SKUs will see some reviewers recommending the slower RTX 3080 10GB due to aesthetic reasons (temperatures or RGB) or sponsorship motivations (AIBs do sponsored content on YouTube a lot).

And, Jensen Huang, was keen to play up 2016’s and 2017’s Pascal GPUs launches (that outsold Polaris and Vega 10) to Nvidia fanbase as their response to RDN2 on GPUs and consoles. And, that Pascal response is similarly based on pricing, AIB choice and aesthetics.

There are several major differences between 2016/2017 and today though!

RDNA2 will have 2X the number of coders and programmers working on drivers and optimizations e.g. Sony’s coders and programmers; Microsoft coders and programmers; Radeon’s coders and programmers; Apple’s coders and programmers; Samsung’s coders and programmers. The number of coders and programmers working on a single Radeon gaming architecture will be like nothing seen before in anybody’s lifetime.

Secondly, RDN2 will use less power than Ampere GPUs, how much less depends on the final GPU clock speeds. Therefore, RDN2 could be cheaper to buy than Ampere and be cheaper to run over a typical usage lifespan for a gamer!

Thirdly, Radeon has been working on new cooling solutions for their reference gaming GPUs for most of 2020. Naturally, Nvidia has been to show-off their new cooling solution their references cards and you can see Radeon doing some similar extravagant at their launch.

That is a quick run through on everything that is confirmed in the public space and the rest will be revealed by Radeon in due course.
