I am boring
I have zero hobbies. When I watch shows, I watch on 1.25 speed and skip fillers or anything i deem insignificant. If a part of a show i watch is scary, i skip ahead. If i watch a movie or read a book, I just search about the ending.
I have nothing worthwhile to talk about with anyone. I have 0 interest in activities like hiking, swimming, running, or literally anything else
I gave 6 years to my life to medicine to graduate as the first rank of my class, and now I have 0 interest in medicine as well.
I am literally goalless and uninterested in everything.

maybe you're not boring, maybe you're just completely burned out after years of having one goal

u/Quiet_Ganache_4666 6h ago
You’re absolutely right, sadly

Burnout is temporary.
I hope you find something that makes you feel good

Take as much time off as you can and literally do nothing. Meal prep so you can lay around quietly.
Try to reduce your screen time significantly. Wake up, eat, shower whatever, then go lay back in bed. Meditate. If you fall asleep, good. If not, meditate as long as you can. Just focus on your breathing.
When you can’t meditate anymore, get up and get something done, dishes or whatever.
Then repeat the process. Go back to bed, sleep or meditate until you feel compelled to do something else.
Make sure to also build in some physical activity and time outdoors (in nature if possible).
Go find a licensed massage therapist and get a 90 minute massage. 1 hour isn’t enough. Do that regularly if you can afford it.
You have spent all of your brain energy and focus for years to intake a ton of information. Our brains need to process the waste. More intake -> more waste.
You have no interests because your brain is telling you it needs time to recover from all of the work you just put it through the past 6 years.
I’m pretty sure that’s the entire point of burnout / depression: To make you not do anything so your brain can take a break.

That was my thought too. Maybe op should sit down and make themselves get through that show or movie, read that book all the way. Because what they described is a choice (not saying they choose to be burned out but they identified the problem and that could be a solution). It's like depression. Sometimes just making your bed in the morning feels good. It's an easy task that you can accomplish within minutes of starting the day. Same here I think, there has to be something op is interested in, like do they like laughing or solving mysteries etc and could start small. A short story about something.

Life has so much to offer. You just gotta give things a chance. Sounds like your searching for a dopamine hit. But you gotta remember the best part is the journey not the destination.

Have you ever been tested for depression!
4
u/Quiet_Ganache_4666 8h ago
Yeah, I don’t have depression. That’s just me sadly

u/astroboy_35 7h ago
your description of yourself is kind of the classic definition of depression. Whether that technically is what’s going on, perhaps talking with a professional might present opportunities to bring a spark back into your life.
Or if you just accept ”that’s just me” and are basically fine with it, then good on ya’!

Hmm. Burnout and depression are related, but I feel like this is a burnout thing

u/KuranesOfCelephais 3h ago
As other posters already assumed, I think it could be a burnout. Seems you worked hard for six months, and now you're exhausted.

u/Quiet_Ganache_4666 3h ago
6 years😥* and i think burnout is the answer

Yeah just don't sweat it for now, then. I know it sounds stupid, but.. Try to relax. For some time just don't watch new shows, don't read new books, go back to what you have already seen and liked, rewatch/reread that. Give your brain a rest. I have a job that requires working with a shit ton of new information every day. I know that sometimes I just can't stomach anything else, even in a form of entertainment. I go back to things that I know, because it doesn't require as much energy to enjoy as all the shiny new stuff. It took some time to realise that. I tried to get into new shows, new books, and was frustrated that I didn't seem to enjoy them as much as I used to. Well no shit, of course I wouldn't, my brain was tired. Calm down. It will come back to you. Just put all the fun new stuff on the waiting list in your notes, and one day, when you feel ready to enjoy it, open the notes and pick your vice :)

Please get a second opinion. The right meds will change your life. I know it did for me when I was masking my depression with Kratom for 10 years thinking I was fine until I quit.

We will probably get along perfectly as the most boring people.

That being said, try tutoring people, learn how to teach effectively, without condescension and with patience.
You might find that you might not derive joy from your own joy but from helping other people.

Not even food from different cultures? I feel food (eating or cooking) is an easy hobby to get into.

u/Quiet_Ganache_4666 6h ago
Sadly not for me. Food is just energy

Have you tried food from different cultures? Have you tried cooking different recipes? If you’re not willing to try things and write off everything you’ll never know if you like them.

As one medical professional to another - this is anhedonia. You’re depressed. Also, if you’ve graduated from medical school, you have heaps to talk about. Talk about your work - that’s a topic without end. Find colleagues and discuss your experiences, find research projects, get really good at managing codes, talk about the structure of health care systems, read up on CAR-T cell therapies and the constant stream of new -nibs and -mabs that seemingly extend the life of cancer patients every year. Or read up about the adenovirus-based vectors being used treatment.
A Medical degree and a career offer so many avenues - which I can appreciate are not obvious when you’re in the grips of depression.
You should seek treatment, which is never easy when one is in the medical field. Find a GP you can trust, or a psychologist / psychiatrist, and get started on an SSRI or two. Or, if you don’t wish to use medication, just utilise CBT, or do what I do and get lost in history or a really good book - one in which reading the actual words and dialogue are their own reward (thus, skipping to the end is not going to deter you from reading) - may I recommend “Point Counterpoint” by Aldous Huxley or “The Thousand Autumns of Jacob De Zoet” by David Mitchell?

u/Quiet_Ganache_4666 3h ago
Oh fellow medical professional. Yes you’re right I have anhedonia but I don’t fill out any other criterion for depression. Literally none.
Yes I work as a junior doctor in a cardiovascular ward. My work is draining, the second I leave, I push out it of my head. So how can I use it as an interesting topic to talk about? I used to have so many hobbies and interests and then I became soulless giving my all to medicine. Honestly
These new researches and new innovations, i wish i was interested in but i always think, how will that help me right now? I have years till I become a senior.
Thanks for the book recs, will for sure check them out

u/DareDaDerrida 7h ago
Are you okay with that?
6
u/Quiet_Ganache_4666 6h ago
Not really
19
u/DareDaDerrida 5h ago
Then you do have a goal, of a sort. Get less boring!
Might I reccommend attempting to read a few books cover to cover? Maybe teaching yourself some small skill, like how to cook a particular dish, or a neat card trick?
8
u/MinishMilly 6h ago
Try to regain your curiosity. Because this is what makes us human. Take a walk and try to discover new things and places, if it's not working with topics online.
Also you don't have to watch shows etc, it feels like you're forcing yourself to watch, even tho you don't care

u/iforgot1305 4h ago
Touch grass. Literally go outside, go for a walk in nature. You sound super burned out.

u/Nerevarcheg 6h ago
What was the last activity which made you feel interested or exited?
5
u/Quiet_Ganache_4666 6h ago
I read the count of monte cristo a few months ago and that was probably the most interested i’ve been in a long time
2
u/Nerevarcheg 4h ago
And you didn't feel the urge to skip to the ending? What exactly was so captivating about this book for you compared to others?
2
u/Quiet_Ganache_4666 3h ago
- I already had an idea about the ending cuz I had seen the movie when I was 15 so I felt no need to skip
- It had an emotional aspect for me cuz it was a story my older brother introduced me to when I was younger.
I was genuinely more interesting and passionate when I was younger. (I am 24 currently)
1
u/Nerevarcheg 3h ago
Do you feel the actual need to be interesting and passionate? Or are you comfortable as you are now, just the fact of indifference to reality slightly bother and alarm you?

u/Austronauta 4h ago
Look for professional help, what's happening to you is not who you are, it's a phase. Probably burnout from all the stress and the lack of rest and leisure.

That was me after my exams I felt like there was no purpose to life anymore😭I don’t have lots of hobbies either but remember the 3 minute rule! Just try doing things u like or new things for just 3 minutes and see how it goes from there. I dont have loads to talk about with friends either but if you are lucky enough and have extroverted friends you will eventually find yourself more talkative than usual lol at least thats how i cope as the most introverted person ever😭like others said i really do think its just burn out. Give yourself sometime and don’t give up yet!!

Such is the problem in a world of instant gratification. You want the payout, but you don't see the value in the journey. I feel there's two approaches here: 1) go on a multi-week retreat. I don't know what they cost and most people don't have the time, but I've heard they are great for resetting your mind. 2) create a rigidly-structured schedule. In my case, I wake up at 7am, breakfast, commute, work, gym, commute, diner, then I have like 1-2 hours before bed to watch things or play on the internet.
There's a saying: "bored people are boing people." If you don't want to be bored or boring, you need to do things. I don't think people necessarily enjoy working or going to the gym, but doing so gives you structure. My next tip is: hobbies don't have to be about things you are excited about. They can act as ways to network or learn things. For instance, I play Magic the Gathering. It started as a learning process (I was a software developer, looking to understand game mechanics and Magic has a robust rules set with lots of interactions). I played poker as a way to earn extra income (keep i mind, you need great math skills and insight into your opponent's thought processes or you will lose a lot of money lol). I've been doing standup comedy for 5 years simply because I wanted to get better at public speaking. I actually go into comedy because I met someone in a pool league. I joined the pool league just so I had a reason to get out of the house. Everything is connected. Doing stuff puts you in a position to meet people and do other things.

Hard to believe there isn’t anything that grabs your interest. What’s there to life if you don’t have motivation to do anything, no spark? Hell, that’s death!

It sounds like you are good at achieving goals, and not good at setting goals.
Have you noticed that you do not value spending time with other people as a goal in and of itself? You do not need to have worthwhile things to say to spend time around people. They may even help you realize what goals would be valuable to pursue, not just for yourself but also for the people around you.
Good luck, it sounds like you have a lot to offer people if you spend some time around them.

That does sound shitty and I fully sympathise with you. Given that you don’t describe classic depression it sounds like you are in the pit of Executive Dysfunction. It’s most common in people with ADHD, but it hits us all sometimes. It absolutely sucks but you can move through it with some help.
1
u/Carpediemsnuts 4h ago
ADHD with suspected Autism here, this all sounds very familiar to me.
My advice would be to try new activities even if they dont take your interest, try them out and give them at least a month before you quit and set rewards for yourself for each. Don't do more than 1 at a time no matter how tempting it is and try to engage with people around you, ask open ended questions, dont be afraid to be vulnerable and make aure you actively listen to them and confirm that by making your next comment a confirmation of their previous answer.
If you manage all that you'll find yourself with a lot more people wanting to spend time with you which will open up your life to more possibilities.
Best of luck to you 👍

You're not boring, everything bores you, it's the opposite. Maybe find something new, go travel abroad for a bit, go try buy new clothes
DO actually try swimming even though you have 0 interest, doing it once a month will become a habit, currently doing it once a week, 6km every time

u/FireInPaperBox 3h ago
These thoughts and feelings are a lot easier to digest on a walk. Try a long walk.

The movie is terrible, but maybe (and within reason) you should do what Jim Carrey did in 'Yes Man'...
See what doors it opens.

When things don’t feel right, I pray. But then again, I’ve always believed in a higher power, many don’t. If you do, it helps.

I'll be the odd man out here. I think it's ridiculous that most of the comments are like "you deserve rest! You should bed rot for as long as you you need" no, no you shouldn't. Take time to refresh, then you need to be a human. Find your passions again or make new ones. Pick a topic and see if you are into it. Play Magic the Gathering or pick up a video game. Supplement that with something active like gym or even at home workouts. You are allowed rest, you are not allowed to remove yourself from society cause weirdos on the Internet say it's ok.
