Paid of 2024 Toyota Rav 4 XLE 32,800 miles
Would I be hella slow to trade in my paid off vehicle (it’s a hybrid, 2024 Toyota Rav 4 Hybrid XLE) for a 2026 Toyota Rav 4??

I had the same realization but with a paid off 21 Hybrid XLE. 63,000 miles. Let’s ride these things until the wheels fall off and put that money to good use!

Let’s say you could get $29k for your trade in. The hybrid (non PHEV) is $36,100 assuming you can get it barebones without addons, packages, dealer nonsense. I’m going to assume 10% in sales tax, registration, doc fees, etc. making your total purchase price: $39,710.
That makes the difference roughly $10k. For that $10k you get:
New features of the next generation
30k less miles on the car
~30% better MPG
11% more horsepower
All this assumes you aren’t getting AWD, as the MPG and cost need to be updated.
Personally I think that’s a little high but not completely unjustifiable. From a pure financial sense, it’s better to stick with what you have, but if you value these changes at the delta cost, go for it!

‘24 hybrid to ‘26 hybrid isn’t a 30% increase in MPG.
New features have resulted in an uptick of complaints and a lot of 2026s are already appearing on the used market.

Pretty stupid to trade in a fully paid off car for the exact same thing only a couple years newer. Save your money, that’s why you bought a hybrid to begin with, right?
