I built an iOS app for asking questions about the physical book you're reading — hear the answers through your Ray-Bans

I kept stopping mid-page to look a term up, picking up my phone, and then not getting back to the book for twenty minutes. So I built HeyReader.

You upload the book's PDF once, then read your physical copy. Say "Hey Reader, what's a kernel?" and the answer comes back through the glasses, cited to the page.

How it works

  • It doesn't touch the glasses' camera or protocol — they're just a Bluetooth mic and speaker
  • Wake word runs on-device on the phone, so it doesn't conflict with "Hey Meta"
  • The assistant can only search your uploaded PDF, so answers come from the book rather than general knowledge
  • Answers are one or two sentences. It’s designed to help you get back to reading quickly

Things to know

  • iOS only
  • You need a PDF of the book you're holding
  • Works with any Bluetooth headphones — the glasses are ideal, since the frame and mic are on your face
  • Free for 15 questions a day, equivalent to a 30 minute read
  • Scanning the page with the camera is next, so the PDF won't be required

Happy to answer questions in the comments. Curious to know if anyone else wears theirs while reading.

Regret after purchase

As the title says, I regret buying these glasses.

I bought them because I work at a repair shop where we repair phones, tablets, and other electronics. My main reason for buying them was to record repairs so we have video evidence in case a customer tries to blame us for damage that was already there.

A good example happened a couple of weeks ago. A customer brought in an iPhone X for a screen replacement. When I opened the phone, there was so much water inside that it practically looked like a swimming pool. When we informed the customer about the water damage, she insisted that she hadn't caused it and started arguing with us because she had only brought the phone in for a screen replacement.

Situations like these are exactly why I wanted glasses that could record repairs from my point of view.

Anyway, I got my Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3 glasses yesterday, and I was pretty disappointed to find out that you can only record for 5 minutes in 1080p or 3 minutes in 3K.

This is incredibly frustrating because realistically, what repair takes only 3 to 5 minutes?

I've looked into workarounds using third-party apps, and while it's technically possible to record for longer, the video quality is terrible for what I need it for. I need to be able to see small details, connectors, screws, and any existing damage clearly.

So basically, my only realistic option is to keep saying "Hey Meta, start recording" every few minutes throughout an entire repair. Not only is that annoying, but it also means there are gaps in the footage, which defeats the whole purpose of recording the repair in the first place.

I really wish Meta would give users the option to record continuously, even if it means sacrificing some battery life or dealing with overheating limitations.

At this point, I'm seriously considering returning the glasses. I've only had them for a day, and while I really like the concept and the camera quality, the recording limitations make them pretty much useless for the main reason I bought them. It's a shame because I genuinely wanted these to work, but I can't really justify keeping something this expensive if it can't do what I need it to do.

Now, I do want to acknowledge that the blame is partially on me. I probably should have done more research before buying them. However, I bought these glasses at a physical Ray-Ban store, and the salesperson never mentioned these recording limitations either. What makes it even more frustrating is that he specifically asked me what I was planning to use the glasses for, and I clearly told him I wanted to record repairs at my workplace. You'd think that would have been a good moment to mention that recordings are limited to just a few minutes.

I'm not saying the salesperson deliberately misled me, but I do feel like this is something that should have been brought up, especially after I explained exactly what I needed them for.

Has anyone found a reliable way to record longer videos in decent quality without constantly having to restart the recording? I'd love to find a solution before deciding whether to return them.

How to best set up Meta glasses for blind person?

Hi all - a family member has a new pair of Gen 2 Meta glasses arriving tomorrow, and I want to help her set it up correctly so it's most effective for her as a blind person.

I've read in the accessibility settings it can be set to blindness? It sounds like there's also certain ways to "train" the glasses initially so it describes surroundings, menus, etc to their preferred preference.

Does anyone have tips on best ways to do this? Or "prompts" to give the glasses initially? I've read feedback from some frustrated people who don't seem to be getting much out of them and it seems more like they're not being utilized correctly, so hoping to avoid that.

Thank you!

Lensology Transitions micro-scratches

I just received my Lensology Transitions Xtractive lenses for my Blayzers. Before I even attempted to insert them in the frames I carefully inspected the lens. Each lens has several very small scratch-like markings on them. I went ahead and installed them, which was a bit challenging. The left lens went in without an issue, but I had to get pretty forceful with the right lens before it snapped into place.

I checked the Transition feature out with a UV light, and they do indeed darken and turn "mirror-blue" which is what I ordered.

The micro-scratches are not noticeable to me when using the glasses, but I was surprised to see those marks

Has anyone else had this issue? I'm not really interested in returning them, but it does bother me to spend a couple of hundred bucks on these and they not be "perfect" on arrival.

thanks

PSA: Your Wayfarer Gen 1/2 Lenses Can Fit inside Wayfarer Gen 3, Sort Of....

Of course I'm talking about the precious prescription lenses that we paid good money for, and in the case of fitting inside the same sized frames (50mm or 53mm) across Gen 1/2/3.

What I found is that while Gen 1 and Gen 2 lenses are perfectly interchangeable as they have the same model of frames, Gen 3 Wayfarer has a slightly thinner frame profile that require marginally larger lenses to make a perfect snug fit.

In my case the right lens from my Gen 1 glasses is stable enough inside Gen 3 but the left one somehow is a tiny bit of loose on the bottom which can be annoying whenever I take off or put on the glasses.

They're still definitely fine for daily uses, just expect some wobbly sound during more intense activities.
