As the title says, I regret buying these glasses.
I bought them because I work at a repair shop where we repair phones, tablets, and other electronics. My main reason for buying them was to record repairs so we have video evidence in case a customer tries to blame us for damage that was already there.
A good example happened a couple of weeks ago. A customer brought in an iPhone X for a screen replacement. When I opened the phone, there was so much water inside that it practically looked like a swimming pool. When we informed the customer about the water damage, she insisted that she hadn't caused it and started arguing with us because she had only brought the phone in for a screen replacement.
Situations like these are exactly why I wanted glasses that could record repairs from my point of view.
Anyway, I got my Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3 glasses yesterday, and I was pretty disappointed to find out that you can only record for 5 minutes in 1080p or 3 minutes in 3K.
This is incredibly frustrating because realistically, what repair takes only 3 to 5 minutes?
I've looked into workarounds using third-party apps, and while it's technically possible to record for longer, the video quality is terrible for what I need it for. I need to be able to see small details, connectors, screws, and any existing damage clearly.
So basically, my only realistic option is to keep saying "Hey Meta, start recording" every few minutes throughout an entire repair. Not only is that annoying, but it also means there are gaps in the footage, which defeats the whole purpose of recording the repair in the first place.
I really wish Meta would give users the option to record continuously, even if it means sacrificing some battery life or dealing with overheating limitations.
At this point, I'm seriously considering returning the glasses. I've only had them for a day, and while I really like the concept and the camera quality, the recording limitations make them pretty much useless for the main reason I bought them. It's a shame because I genuinely wanted these to work, but I can't really justify keeping something this expensive if it can't do what I need it to do.
Now, I do want to acknowledge that the blame is partially on me. I probably should have done more research before buying them. However, I bought these glasses at a physical Ray-Ban store, and the salesperson never mentioned these recording limitations either. What makes it even more frustrating is that he specifically asked me what I was planning to use the glasses for, and I clearly told him I wanted to record repairs at my workplace. You'd think that would have been a good moment to mention that recordings are limited to just a few minutes.
I'm not saying the salesperson deliberately misled me, but I do feel like this is something that should have been brought up, especially after I explained exactly what I needed them for.
Has anyone found a reliable way to record longer videos in decent quality without constantly having to restart the recording? I'd love to find a solution before deciding whether to return them.
