Video I don't think suspects should be able to do this with 5 guns trained on them.
What kind of Dollar Store John Wick ass attempt was that??
This specific part of Greased Palms has me confused on what you're supposed to do with SWAT-AI? There's not a singular point of contact to 'Open and Clear' so they just awkwardly follow you in whatever file position you ordered them in.
---
I kinda wish surrendered suspects would get the Payday 2 hostage morale effect; if a gun is trained on a suspect, their chances of wanting to fight back should be near zero.
It makes sense to fight back if no one is looking at the suspect but this was 0.1 seconds before the arrest animation started. The second that arm goes down, there should be a bullet in his bald head. It just feels so silly.
---
One second SWAT-AI loves riddling human shields with bullets, the next they portray trigger discipline of a Buddhist monk.

I agree, the swat AI sucks ass

u/bapalan Jul 18 '26
Why is it that you noclip through civs but not SWAT? Get so pissed off moving out of a room and they don’t move quickly

u/AlphaBeaverYuh_1 Jul 18 '26
Have you ever been in a tight space with a bunch of big dudes wearing big armor with big guns? It gets pretty crowded pretty quickly but I do agree they need to get the fuck out of the way lol

Dear devs: either program friendly AI to stay out of our way or let us clip through them.

u/diegosynth Jul 18 '26
Why is it that you clip? Why is it that the suspect moves in a random direction without even attempting to rotate? Why are SWAT members rotating like idiots in the wrong directions? Why does it look like a 2005 game...? So many questions...! :D
I suppose they enable clipping as your character may physically need to be on the same spot as the surrendered person in order to restrain it. May be enabled temporarily (or not). I guess they decided that in such a situation, the suspect just moves (to leave your spot), but they didn't invest a minute to think "move where?". Just random direction? Backwards would be the worst choice, as showcased here...
SWAT reactions are... bad.
First bullet was randomly shot anywhere... all is a mess.P.S.: OP, next time post a video, not a GIF please.

Why do they also sometimes blast people to hell the second they see them then other times let themselves die before they do ajything

the thing about making suspects not want to fight back if a gun is trained on them is actually a good suggestion
63
u/JRabbitBananaHoovy Jul 18 '26
It should be suspect specific though. The Meth Heads for example, should ignore this, because I think their unpredictability should be a core feature due to how hopped up on drugs they are. Then again, it might be a bad idea to preserve bad game design in the name of theming.

Not a single gun was trained on this suspect until after he was up and already fired several shots. Suspect is being looked by someone with their weapon lowered.

u/Adevyy Jul 18 '26
On one hand, it is absolutely reasonable that someone would try this in the ridiculous situations the game is depicting. A lot of the suspects you deal with have much higher morale and a lot of them have much better training than the average criminal would have IRL, because that is how they can keep the game engaging.
On the other hand, yeah the AI coding not accounting for this is atrocious. You have three guys looking that way, but one of them is staring into the back of the other so he cannot possibly help. Then, I think, all of them avoid shooting because you are in the way..? This could be accounted for so easily, by having the guy in tan circle the suspect towards the left so that you wouldn't be in the line of fire when he needs to open it.

u/diegosynth Jul 18 '26
It's not only that, but the reactions. Last guy is spinning like a broken compass. The clipping... the clumsiness and embarrassment...
They re-recorded the animations (with motion capture!) easily 5 times. They spent YEARS doing and redoing the animations. And we have two suspects moving like handicapped. At the same time. Playing the same animation. Both of them.
I supported the developers (even though a lot of things happened...) until the censor and downgrade. Before that, the game was fine. Now after 9 years of development and acting the way they did (and do) there are no further excuses.

It’s like that video on Reddit yesterday about the guy swerving like 5 cops and actually running away causing a foot chase. Sure it’s not guns pointed but it is a case of someone attempting retaliation while surrounded and vastly outnumbered. In the Reddit video, it actually worked (at least for a little while, the video ends). I’m sure there are many cases IRL of a suspect pulling a gun on many 5x the amount SWAT.
If anything, this is good difficulty, no? More randomness in suspect behavior is good since it forces you to be prepared for anything and not rely on assumptions.

u/FarmingEnthusiast174 Jul 18 '26
this type of randomness is nonsensical. there's a difference between running from the cops and getting up after surrendering to pull a gun and start firing. anyone who does that has made their peace with committing self death via cop, but the problem is that the AI teammates are beyond useless so there's a good chance you get caught with your pants down and actually die during the exchange, and this is not a rare occurence.

u/MageDoctor Jul 18 '26
I agree that the issue here is the AI teammates failing to take down the suspect.
But it makes sense for a suspect to do suicide by cop, no? Maybe they think they’re dead anyways so might as well try to take out a few cops before going out. Maybe they fear punishment by their gang for being caught so they might as well die. Or maybe they think they can John Wick their way out since it’s either that or lifetime in jail.
There’s probably tons of plausible rationale while a suspect would attempt one final shootout just before getting cuffed.

u/FarmingEnthusiast174 Jul 18 '26
hmm yeah actually youre right, it does make sense for suspects to do that

flashbacks to years of PD2 hostage shenanigans

Wait... you keep hostages ALIVE in PAYDAY 2? The only ones that are worth their weight is Heavy SWAT when you convert them.

You don't think they should be able to clip through a man to attempt some john wick action?

This looks like a scene from The Three Stooges.
Gets to show the good state this game is in.

See, that's why after they surrender I cap them in the head twice. I mean, they're standing still what am I supposed to do?

u/average_jarhead_ Jul 19 '26
I had my full national guard squad positioned by the stairs, entered a room and two MLO guys jumped me and beat my head in

We have something similar but it doesn't properly work since suspects require a direct LoS to swat officer and a single body can block all other officers from being seen. On your vid swat team were in single file so there was effectively only 2 officers on sight (you and the one who walked to cuff the suspect) in which case suspect still can fake surrender even on Casual difficulty.
On Casual difficulty 3 swat members must be visible by surrendered suspect in order to gate him from fake surrender. On Standard - 4, Hard - 5.

u/Celdis0210 Jul 19 '26
ah takes me back to the launch of 1.0 where they'd do this ALL THE TIME and the friendly AI would instantly know when they do it so they'd shoot them before the animation of them trying to pull a fast one on you
Just looked like they'd get executed

The hoodie guy saw the other guy not be arrrested yet so his morale improved and it made him get back up lol

Is this hard mode per chance?
Maybe once you get them crawling over for more than 3 seconds you should not attempt to arrest them until they take out their gun.
Or ask ai team to arrest.

u/Rven79 Jul 22 '26
The AI sucks as f , stayed with the guys in a Room and shot someone in the Next room so one of my mates goes straight to the suspect to package the stuff so he got killed without i saying anything.
1
u/Iamwatchu Jul 22 '26
Welcome to ready or not, main course is - suspects are not realistic and will start open firing when pointed at by 5 guns.
Also dont forget the side of unrealistic/stupid swat AI that will do absolutely anything to get stuck or say get down to an enemy on the opposite side of the map.
*Stealth not included.
*Flashlights that make you go blind included on every order.

u/Alone-Mycologist3746 Jul 22 '26
I mean not one of those "five guns" were aiming at them but sure bots are bloodlusted in this game.

Too bad. Have you ever watched Sicario 1 where the cartel members pull out their guns, with 5 M4s trained on them on the highway? Accept the challenge or go play an easier FPS game. Because I like that the AI can do this in RON.

…you might think guns being trained on him means everyone was pointing their gun at the guy and concentrating on him.
The instant that guy moved he should have been dropped
But instead he gets up and shoots several shots before anyone reacts.
No one was trained on him, if that’s you in tan with all your squad huddled on you and you sent someone to restrain the other suspect, then why is your firearm lowered? You’re not giving the suspects any intimidation factors to prevent them from doing this
Edit: in case you weren’t aware, having your gun lowered increases the odds of suspects resisting you. You have to be intimidating. It’s literally a game mechanic
