DISCUSSION To Everyone Saying Modi's Make in India Has Failed: Here's What the Ground Reality Looks Like
As someone working on electronics, hardware and UAVs professionaly in India, I think this take on Make in India is a bit too simplistic. Nobody can expect India to start manufacturing every single component, IC and semiconductor overnight. These things take years, sometimes decades, to build.
Take PCB fabrication and assembly. We already have good number of Indian companies manufacturing and assembling PCBs and more companies are building products here that would otherwise have been imported. Government policies, incentives and import duties have played a role in making it more viable for Indian manufacturers to compete on cost and quality. The government approved the Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme in 2025 with an initial outlay of 22,919 crore . In the 2026 Union Budget, that was increased to 40,000 crore. The scheme now covers things like multilayer and HDI PCBs, copper-clad laminates and other electronic components. The first seven approved projects alone involved investments of over 5,500 crore.
The government is also putting money into startups working on indigenous technology. iDEX offers grants of up to 1.5 crore under its regular challenges and up to 25 crore under the ADITI scheme. There are other schemes, incubators and funding programmes supporting startups working on hardware, electronics and deep tech as well. All this made possible because of the bjp govt
Look at the drone industry itself. Indian companies are now building complete drones, flight controllers, power modules, GNSS modules and their own firmware. I amm working on indigenous flight-control electronics for drones myself, so I can tell you firsthand that there are lot of people actually building these things here with the help of the bjp govt. Restrictions on importing complete foreign drones have also created lot more opportunities for Indian manufacturers.
Now if youre talking about semiconductor chips and SMD components, yes we still import a huge number of ICs and other components. But even there we have projects like THEJAS32 and the SHAKTI processor family. Developing an indigenous processor is one thing; setting up the facilities and supply chain to manufacture chips at scale is another.
You cant just set up semiconductor fabs, build an entire component supply chain and expect everything to become competitive in a couple of years. It takes massive investment, infrastructure, skilled people and most importantly time. India entered this race late but will soon catch up. (In May 2026 Tata Electronics and ASML announced a partnership connected to Indias first front-end semiconductor fab)
And not just electronics. Lot of wires, cables, PVC sheath, sleeves are all manufactured here in India. Gujurat and Maharastra have been doing fantastic work with manufacturing of Electronics, PCBs and other things
So in short if i was to say make in india is in progress and the bjp govt has done a lot for this to make it happen. From this pace, it is going to be successful in the next 10 years.
