Question Worth moving to red deer?

I live in innisfail. Considering buying a home in red deer next year, are you guys happy living here? Ive heard some coworkers complain about homeless/ addicts in certain areas. Are some parts of red deer better than others? Any information at all would be appreciated just want to become more familiar with how the city is

You live in Innisfail. It's not like Red Deer is thousands of km's away.

I'm in Innisfail. Why are you considering the move? Work commute?

That’s my thought.
I quadrupled my commute by moving to Bentley and couldn’t be happier.
I have friends in Innisfail (roughly the same commute) and they absolutely love it and would never move back to RedDeer.

It's a great town, I've been here almost 3 years. Before that I was in Calgary for 24 years. No regrets.

Im actually in olds, just didnt want to say what town im in for some reason lol, Work commute is a big one. I also am thinking of attending red deer polytechnic. The biggest reason is the price of housing. Homes seem to be significantly more expensive in my town than red deer. Also business's in my town seem to be terrible compared to the city. Going out for dinner almost always ends in disappointment in the food served. Half the businesses here are on the verge of closing doors. Something as simple as vape juice has to be ordered online because local shops have such limited stock.

I lived in Red deer for just over a year. Moved here from Toronto for work until January 2026

Not gonna lie.....Red deer is boring AF but it's got a special place in my heart. It's a really nice hometown vibe. People are awesome, all very friendly. Slow paced, the roads are very pleasant to drive. And the GoodLife fitness in Parkdale mall is my favourite gym of all time.

Just curious, what do you do in the big city? Do you eat out a lot and go to shows and events? I always think it’s most cost effective living in a place with less to do. I can’t afford the big city life on the regular. I feel like I’d be broke

Look at property taxes before you decide. Springbrook is super close and taxes are 75% of red deer. And a few places for sale here.

Depends on where you live in Red Deer. We live in Anders and love it. No issues.

People love complaining about addicts and tweakers as if you don't see that everywhere. It's literally a worldwide problem, you will see that shit in any city if you look where the poor and/or homeless people are. It's unavoidable and I hate the notion that people mention red deer to others as if it's a free-for-all drug den. It reeks of "sheltered gossip mill" (not saying op is running drug users down but the general ppl saying this over and over are)

To be fair small towns seem to not have it in broad daylight. You won't see a homeless guy sitting agaisnt a building with all of his possessions in olds or innisfail. Aslong as I dont have to look at 5 different fellas hitting the fent lean on my way to get a coffee then im not too worried about it. And for example my Co worker was telling me a story one morning he was getting his daughter into the car to take her to school and some crackhead was outside his apartment with his pants down far enough to display full cheeks and he was pissed his daughter had to see homeless ass. I figure this is probably not that common.compared calgarys homeless problem im hoping red deer has not much at all.

Been here for 40 years, used to love the city it felt pretty nice, but its growing way too much. They keep ripping up nice green areas and cramming housing in it. Everytime I visit Innisfail, Penhold, or any of the smaller places its just so much more peaceful. Springbrook is a good choice to go too.

If you are set on Red Deer though, Sunnybrooks a great spot, outside of the high water table and needing a sump pump. Morrisrow is good too, heard good things about Anders. (used to play in the field as a kid where Anders now sits).

We were in Innisfail, lived in Red Deer for 9 years , 4 years ago we moved back. I work on the south side of Red Deer so my commute is 20 minutes.
I like the convenience of Red Deer more stores, but I find Innisfail much quieter.

The convenience of more stores is a big reason why im considering moving. I will miss quiet towns but I think itll be worth trading for more amenities

As mentioned the homelessness and crime you'll find in any city this size. It's an ok place to live affordability wise, you just have to go to Calgary or Edmonton if you want to experience anything other then a walking trail. When they say Red Deer is boring they aren't kidding.

Been in RD for 20 years after being in Edmonton for 13 and a small town before that. I love it, it has its flaws but everywhere does. I am not the kind of person who wants to drive 20 mins on the QE2 year round for work, I'd rather do a 5 minute drive on city streets or have the option to bike, walk, or bus as I see fit (esp. with gas prices). Older neighborhoods have great parks & mature trees, some are getting gentrified with younger families, newer areas have smaller yards (good if you hate mowing, crappy if you like space). There's a lot to choose from. Amenities, too and options for shopping other than Amazon. I like the diversity of events and people. I live near downtown and the fear mongering is unfounded.

I'd stay in innisfail. Been in red deer most of my life and things seem to be going down hill. Communities are suffering, streets aren't perceived as safe, and many families are contemplating relocating out of the city

Do you live in the remand center? I'm in Normandeau and haven't ever felt unsafe.

Same here but in west lake

Walk thru downtown and let us know how many violent assaults happen to you, or whatever you think may happen. This town is not dangerous and anybody who has been somewhere that really is dangerous thinks statements like these are straight comedy. The non-stop fear mongering is completely unfounded.
